Best Beauty Products | May 2019 Report

Here’s a look at the top 25 products reviewed in the month of May, plus a summary of how many products and brands were reviewed and a break out of ratings! 🙂

I think it’d be fun to go through what we used, purchased, resisted, and so forth each month, here are some questions:

  1. What were your favorites from the last month?
  2. What didn’t impress you?
  3. Did you return anything you purchase?
  4. Or successfully resist temptation?

Please help us streamline the comments' section and be more efficient: double-check the post above for more basic information like pricing, availability, and so on to make sure your question wasn't answered already. We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! Thank you for understanding!

Empowered lip lacquer from Sephora was one of my favourite recent purchases, as were Lannister Gold and The Night King 24/7 liners from UD’s GoT collection. I also found the Sin version of UD’s Afterglow highlighters steeply discounted so I grabbed it with all due haste!

What didn’t impress me – I found a YSL Urban Escape e/s palette steeply discounted at Winners and was going to grab it but when I looked it up to see the colours (it was locked in an “anti theft” plastic box), I was it was surprised to see it was unappealing blues from icy to deep (I was hoping it would be “urban neutral”).

I neither resisted temptation nor did I return anything I purchased.

Discounted UD Sin must be in. I found it first at a TJ MAXX close to me and bought it. Then forgot that I’d purchased it and found it again at another TJ MAXX and bought it again. Life’s been like that lately….I have a very deeply discounted Sin in a sealed box if anyone wants it.

What were your favourites from the last month? Lipsticks – Maybellline’s Spice for Me and Colour Pop’s Foolish, not exactly last month’s, but new for me.

What didn’t impress you? Lots of eyeshadow palettes that contain pinks, oranges and reds.

Did you return anything you purchase? No.

Or successfully resist temptation? I do love the Chanel’s latest neutral offering, but at $139 plus shipping, it is way too expensive.

I got Smoke Sessions too, and I really like it. Also got the eyeliner called Baked, and it’s the most amazing color eyeliner for my blue eyes, and light (yellow) skin and hair. I hope they never discontinue it.

Favorites for May: Emme Cosmetics Spring Garden palette, ColourPop Blur Lux Alchemist lipstick, Buxom blushes in Seychelles and Mykonos, Algenist Genius Anti Aging BiPhase Peel and Fresh Deep Hydration Sleeping Mask.

What didn’t impress: I don’t think I used anything that I wasn’t happy with. The Huda powder works great under my eyes but not so well on the rest of my face but that is okay since the Becca Hydra Mist powder only works on my face and not under my eyes, LOL!!

Returns: None

Resist temptation: Well, until this week I could have said the Coy palette but since I just picked it up I can’t say I resisted anything. I will be picking up a few things over the next week or so as new things that I like are rolling out.

May favorites: I hauled more beauty items this May than I’ve ever hauled in single month previously, thanks to Sephora giving 20% off for Rouge. I bought so many items I absolutely love, making it difficult to choose favorites. Here are the ones that really rocked my world.

Giorgio Armani Power Fabric Concealer in 5. I have had such a hard time finding a concealer that works for me. All of them do something strange under my eyes, separating into a patchy mess on contact. I followed multiple youtube tutorials, buying the recommended concealerss, powders, and application tools, and applying them exactly as directed, and more than half the time I had to remove the disaster before I could finish my makeup. I allowed beauty counter consultants to try their luck with me, and they got equally hideous results. Then I started watching tutorials by Andrea Ali, and purchasing the Sephora 57 brush was the first part of the equation. Using the Becca Anti Fatigue under eye primer as suggested by Mel Thompson was the second. Third was Power Fabric
Concealer, and the final product that made all the difference was the Huda Easy Bake Powder pressed under my eyes with a damp beauty blender. I’ve been wearing concealer every work day for the past five weeks and I finally understand why women consider concealer an essential part of their beauty routine.

Huda Easy Bake Powder in Pound cake. For setting under eyes only. See above.

Marc Jacobs Velvet Mascara Primer and Velvet Nior Mascara. Unbelievable. I’ve used so many mascaras and primers, but these outperform all, including Lancome mascaras and primers.

Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat Liner in Supersize Me. I have a medium skin tone and many nude liners are either lighter than my lips or turn grey on my lips. This is my first ever holy grail lipliner. I wear it with all my neutral, coral, and pink lipsticks. I keep it in my purse at all times and have to sharpen it a couple times a week.

Viseart Coy and Editorial Brights palettes. The colorful palettes of my dreams and so complimentary to one another!

Pat McGrath Lust Lip Gloss in Earth Angel. Sigh. So pretty.

What didn’t impress me: Wander Beauty Nude Illusion Foundation. Awful.

Returned: Wander Beauty Nude Illusion Foundation.

Resisted: Tom Ford White Suede (fragrance) and Hermes In Jardin Sur la Toit (also fragrance). Also many of the new Chanel eyeshadow palettes that were released in May were really tempting.

What were your favorites from the last month? Missha M Perfect Cover BB Cream, Beauty Bakerie Cotton Candy Champagne Blushlighter palette, ND Safari palette, ND Cranberry Palette, Nars Skin Deep palette, Tom Ford Casablanca paired with any of my less pigmented glosses.

What didn’t impress you? I’ve liked everything new that I’ve tried over the month of May.

Did you return anything you purchase? Nope!

Or successfully resist temptation? I feel like I’ve successfully resisted temptation on a lot of things.
