Urban Decay Vice Lipstick
Urban Decay Rapture Vice Lipstick ($17.00 for 0.11 oz.) is described as a “dusty rose [with a Cream finish].” It’s a soft, medium-dark rosy plum with neutral-to-warm undertones and a creamy finish. It had nearly opaque color payoff with a smooth, creamy texture that glided on without tugging but sat well on the lips and didn’t slide around too much. The formula is forgiving and seems to minimize the appearance of lip lines. On me, it wore well for four and a half hours and was nicely hydrating. It had opaque pigmentation with a very creamy, smooth texture that applied easily and seemed to develop a dewier finish as it sat on the lips (after a minute). The texture was comfortable to wear and lightly hydrating. over the four hours it lasted, but some of the color separates into lip lines as it wears away. Urban Decay Peyote Vice Lipstick ($17.00 for 0.11 oz.) is described as a “metallic dusty mauve-rose [with a Metallized finish].” It’s a muted, medium-dark rosy brown with warm undertones and fine gold and rose pearl. The texture was soft, lightly pliable and applied without dragging or skipping; it didn’t seem to need time to “melt” in order to apply well, though the texture seems to soften even more as it is applied. It had semi-opaque color coverage, where the natural lip color will still come through and can influence how the color looks overall. It was lightly hydrating and lasted for three hours on me. FORMULA OVERVIEW | Urban Decay Vice Lipstick ($17.00 for 0.11 oz.) is available in six finishes, which are primarily distinguished by level of sheen, shimmer content, and coverage. Mega Mattes are the thinnest and have the most “cling” as they are drier and more matte (but most are semi-matte and not a totally flat matte) and can be drying, though they are longer-wearing. Comfort Mattes are creamier, a little denser, with richer color payoff on average (they are the most pigmented out of the finishes), and have a satin finish that is fairly comfortable to wear, usually lightly hydrating, and longer-wearing. Creams are usually softer and creamier, though not too soft (they don’t mush or break from the base easily), with some being tackier and stiffer in the tube until they warm up against the lips; they have good color payoff, are hydrating, and are comfortable to wear but have more typical wear (four to six hours–six hours for deeper/richer shades like a red). Sheers and Sheer Shimmers have a more balm-like consistency that feels a little thinner but is wetter/more emollient than Mega Mattes, so ultimately, they feel quite different applied; they have sheerer coverage, though more semi-sheer to semi-opaque than very sheer, and have the shortest wear time at two to fours with light hydration. Metallized is the most shimmery of the finishes, though some of the other finishes have shades that are actually as shimmery (to me), but the Metallized formula has a thinner, more emollient base that isn’t as dense or as cream-like as the Creams; they feel more like the Sheers but a bit heavier and more pigmented (but seem to run semi-opaque to opaque, not always fully opaque) with average wear (four to five hours), light hydration. The Revolution formula–generally–felt a little more hydrating and pigmented on the lips, but these seem to wear a little longer; some of the shades that were in Revolution and are now in Vice (particularly the Creams, Sheers, and Sheer Shimmers) feel virtually the same on to me. The Comfort Mattes are the only ones that felt largely different–more satiny than matte, less dense compared to Matte Revolution.
A note on packaging: an average Revolution lipstick weighed 1.0 oz. in total, while a Vice Lipstick weighed 0.7 oz. in total. The weight distribution for a Revolution lipstick was: 0.2 oz. for the cap alone, 0.8 oz. for the base. The weight distribution for a Vice lipstick was: 0.2 oz. for the cap alone, 0.5 oz. for the base. The decrease is felt primarily in the sturdiness/weighted feeling of the base, so I find the older Revolutions to stand better on their own, but thrown into a cup or jar for storage, it doesn’t really matter. The more weighted base does give a greater sense of heft when applying, since you hold the base. The caps are the same total weight, but the Revolution caps are shorter and, as a result, maybe 1mm thicker, while the Vice caps are longer and spread the same weight of material over a larger area. All but two out of 120 lipstick caps felt very secure, and then about four were extremely secure and difficult to uncap, but otherwise, there is a soft “click” and the caps seem to stay on without easily coming off. All that being said, they seem to be the same packaging used in the Gwen Stefani and Alice Through the Looking Glass collaborations, though the interior tube felt a little higher-end, even though they all weigh the same. Revolution Lipsticks were $22.00 for 0.09 oz., which works out to be $244.44/oz., and these are $17.00 for 0.11 oz., which works out to be $154.55/oz. So while the packaging does feel less substantial and cheaper, you are paying $5 less and getting more for your money, but if you really liked the heavier base of Revolution lipsticks, you might miss that feeling with the new packaging.

Love the plummy roses – Rapture, Crisis, Tampered-and all scored A’s too. Narrowing my wishlist is going to be hard!
I love those types of shades, too!
One of these three shades IS going on my shopping list. I just can’t make up my mind which one! This is so much harder than lipstick has a right to be LOL!
I ended up deciding on Rapture. And it’s the strangest thing… the way it reacts with my skin tone, it actually pulls kind of grey-ish! I have to be very careful with the makeup I wear with it, or else it drains the color entirely out of my face. I don’t hate the look of it with the right makeup (and I LOVE the feel of it). But I’m starting to think that to get the sort of look I was hoping for with minimal makeup, I will have to try a similar shade, only a touch warmer. Which means I may have to bite the bullet and buy Tampered after all. OH DARN, another lipstick! 😉
(I’m going to end up with 20 of these suckers, I can just feel it in my bones…. )
Something a bit warmer sounds like what you’d need to have it be easier to wear! Happy to hear you are liking the feel of the formula, at least!
Ohhh these rosy plums are nice!
Also- Christine, your makeup is so pretty! You look beautiful, and you are validating my decision to order UD Rapture blush this weekend ?
Thank you, Julia! 🙂
Funny you say that about Rapture blush, I was thinking the same thing! I might just order it after seeing how great it looks with these lip shades!
Almost too berry for me these warm pink shades, but I love the textures of these.
The textures are nice!
Ooooo! I may pick up Tampered instead of Hot Chocolate. Cruelty-free AND permanent! Thanks for swatching, Christine! Have you ever done a lip care post? With all of the lip swatches you post, you must be the queen of lip care products! lol
I usually just lip balm, and I’m good 🙂 I exfoliate maybe once a month or if I haven’t done a lot of swatching in a few days, but usually applying/removing multiple times in a row works as exfoliation, lol! My go-to lip balms are Jack Black Lip Balm and Tom Ford Lip Balm (works the same Jack Black for me). For more intensive treatments, I like Bite’s Agave Masks, Hourglass’ Lip Oil, and SUQQU Lip Balm. I have not had much luck with a lot of the fancy lip balms, like Tatcha, Dior, By Terry, etc.
Thanks to you, I tried the Jack Black lip balms, and I absolutely love them! And Dior rose balm didn’t work for me, either. It left a film on my lips. ::shudders:: I love Smith’s rosebud salve, too.
Yay! I bought a ton of lip balms to try from a variety of brands over the last year but more mid to high-end, and really, didn’t fall head over heels in love with anything other than SUQQU’s as of yet. Nuxe Creme de Miel is nice but super heavy for me with an odd texture (to me, at least). I like Tom Ford’s but appreciate that it does the same job as Jack Black… it’s just vanilla-scented, so I kind of dig that. I usually use Neiman Marcus gift cards (when they do the spend $X get a $Y gift card) towards those when I want to splurge, lol. I haven’t used Smith’s in forever, but I remember liking it in the past.
I know I said I wasn’t going to get any of the pink or red Vice lipsticks because I already have lots of those colours but I just love Crisis! It catches my eye each time I see it! I shall like Rapture and Tampered, but already have Hot Chocolate for a dupe.
*edit: shall = also
Crisis is a pretty one!
I’m loving these rosy shades lately! And Safeword looks so nice for a pale-ish nude. I’ve been really into MLBB and nude shades lately, so I’m loving this set!
Awesome to hear 🙂
Rapture is such a beautiful mauve the finish of this lipstick reminds me of the MAC Satin Lipsticks applies beautifully and super comfortable on the lips 🙂
They have been applying pretty well!
Oh man. I am loooving the look of a Tampered and Crave — although is that a little mixing error in Tampered (the violet splotch?) I half wish it isn’t, because it’s kinda pretty! ?
I have nooo idea – I had a few that had either a splotch, drip, or something a little off on the exterior, but the color seemed mixed when using it?
Love the look of every single one of these.
Yay!
Oh that’s so weird!! I wonder if it’s some sort of early run oversight that will be resolved in later batches. The colour does look gorgeous, though, so it’s good to hear that it doesn’t affect usage!!
Peyote reminds me a bit of Lovelight, at least how it would look with my lip pigmentation.
I can definitely see that!
I’m really loving the way Crisis looks, I’ll be getting that one for sure!
Enjoy it, Chelsea!
yeah doood.. I want all of these.
But I’m definitely in for Safe Word and Peyote despite not being as stellar. I have to look at the others for dupes very carefully as its that old familiar ground…
Harder to find shimmery shades like Peyote, I think!
Tampered and Peyote look extra great on you.
Thank you, Holly!
Want, need, love, must have! (The first three!)
Nice 🙂
Peyote & Safeword ?So pretty!
You and Wendy think alike 😉
All of these are quite pretty. Rapture and Crisis are both so pretty. I can’t tell which would be better for my coloring but both would probably work. Rapture looks slightly cooler but Crisis seems brighter/lighter which might be more important being so pale. Though I did burn like crazy and somehow retained a small amount of color from after sun care so I’m not quite as translucent as I was.
I bet both would!
I felt like Peyote would be a pretty color when I saw it in your sneak peeks, but seeing the full face picture now I don’t think it’s a super interesting shade after all. I do like Crisis a lot though, just a tad darker and warmer than Rapture (I don’t think anyone would need both!).
You could definitely get away with just Crisis or Rapture! I feel like UD made several of the more popular types of “wearable” shades similar with undertone varying slightly or the finish differing.
I love these. I think Rapture is at the top of my wish list now.
Nice pick, Kimm!
Your Tampered bullet has a splash of purple on it! 😀
It does!
Even though it only got a B, I am still loving Peyote! That shade has just the right amount of shimmer, without going into OTT territory.
Another perk of this group is Tampered. I may not have had it on my list before, but seeing that it is super close to MAC Hot Chocolate made my day!!!
Now for the bad; WHY did UD mess with Rapture???? Not that this iteration looks bad, but still!
Peyote is nice! I think that the Metallized finish isn’t really described well – I do not think they’re nearly as opaque as the creams. I’m curious if UD will have more info on their site when everything launches.
I have a feeling I’m going to buy way too many of these 😛
Also just want to say: the weight breakdown of the packaging is appreciated! It seems like a lot of people are concerned about it. I’m not—less money, more product! Yes please 🙂
Happy to help, Rachael!
In the close-up bullet pic for Tampered, it looks like there’s cool purple pigment leaking out. Is that just a quirk of the picture, or was that really happening with the lipstick?
It’s really happening – I had a couple ones with oddities like that but when using it, there was nothing amiss. Like it seemed totally mixed in the bullet!
Love these, especially the three plummy shades.
It seems to be a popular shade!
The little purple “mistake” in your tampered lipstick makes me so happy
Haha!
Oh, I see a real run on my disposable income with these! How lovely. I have the “old” Rapture and I think I like this new one even better, which is hardly surprising since Craving (one of my all time loves) is a dupe. And Crisis….oh, I’m having a Crisis just waiting for it to arrive in-store!
Speaking of dupes, though, Christine…today, I was trying to vote for Nars Goulue as a dupe for Becca Dahlia (I think that’s the one) and I wanted to say that Goulue was warmer/Becca cooler but it’s so hard to tell which button to hit (I think the question is worded something like “how close is Goulue to Dahlia and I was trying to say Goulue is cooler/Dahlia is warmer but I think it kept coming out the other way around. Can you explain rating the dupes and which one we’re meant to be describing when we pick the features like “more shimmer/less shimmery”, etc.
Okay, scratch all that about the dupes…I think I actually got it right. Maybe….I hope!
Hopefully you got it, but I’ll explain anyway! 🙂
Question: How close is Goulue to Dahlia?
Answer: Goulue is [answers]
So the descriptions are about how Goulue differs from Dahlia; is it more shimmery, lighter, warmer, etc. Based on what you mentioned, you’d select “cooler” and you’d be good to go!
Rapture, Crisis, and Tampered are must haves for me, I have to try a metallized too, not sure which yet.
Can’t wait to see which shade you choose for Metallized!
I have high hopes for Crisis! I’ve always loved the way Rapture looks on me but for some reason it looks almost purple-y on me. Guess it’s my skin tone and the natural pigmentation of my lips effecting the colour. So hoping Crisis ends up looking like plummy rose. I wonder how close it will resemble Craving on me. Sometimes dupes end up looking different on me too. Can’t wait to check it out in person!
Here’s hoping you find a few to like in person, Lisa!
Thanks! Also, I just realized in my original comment I meant I like the way Rapture looks on you, Christine, not me. Silly me.
I haven’t had a chance to go through all your UD Vice posts yet but I have to say you are a SAINT for swatching and testing them all so thoroughly (weight & cost comparisons and all)!! Your lips deserve a vacation after this LOL.
Thank you, Carly! 🙂
Love Rapture and Vice.. Like peyote but might be a bit too light. Will have to see.
I’ll be curious which ones you end up trying, Susan!
Wow, these are all such gorgeous shades! Safe Word is a beautiful nude. From what I’ve seen so far, I think I’m going to end up with quite a few of these new UD lipsticks 😉 And Christine, thanks so much for the detailed review of the packaging, weight, feel, etc. of these. What other beauty blogger does this?? You’re the best 🙂
You’re too kind, Cathy! 🙂
All those shades look really great on you!
Thanks, Kelly!
Love them all !!!
Yay!
Rapture was the first Revolution lipstick I bought and I’m almost due for a new tube so that worked out 🙂 The whole plum rose mauve section are my power colors. I just feel better when I wear them. And that my friends is how I justify my shameful amount of basically the same color lol Tampered tho..how am I going to wait for it now that I’ve seen it????
Perfect timing, haha! 😉 It’s right around the corner for a releasing!
Rapture and Crisis for me. ^_^ They are both superb MLBB Colors for me.
Nice!
All of these. Dear lord these are my favorites so far of this line, especially Rapture and Crisis. They look so lovely on you!
Thank you so much, Bre!
