Urban Decay Moondust Eyeshadow Palette Review, Photos, Swatches
Urban Decay Moondust Eyeshadow Palette
Urban Decay Moondust Eyeshadow Palette ($49.00 for 0.16 oz.) consists of eight, new shades of the Moondust Eyeshadow formula housed in a “glittery” plastic compact. It looks like silvery glitter, but it doesn’t feel like loose glitter (so you won’t get a bunch of glitter shedding over time but can appreciate the look of it!). The Moondust formula is specifically designed to be over-the-top sparkly with “minimal fallout” and sheerer coverage dry, more “intense color payout” when applied wet. I like using flat, synthetic brushes (or fingertips, as the brand suggests) that have been slightly dampened by a spritz of just water. If you want extra-long hold, I would still recommend a glitter adhesive, but I get pretty good wear with little fall out without any primers or adhesive, as the formula has a smoother, almost wet consistency. They work better combined with other eyeshadows than using several at once, and they tend to look more impressive in person than in still photos.
Specter is a light pink with warm undertones and a sparkling, frosted finish. It had semi-sheer coverage applied dry and mostly opaque coverage applied damp. The texture was soft, lightly loose in the pan, and blended out with only a little bit of fall out when applied dry but had no fall out when patted on with a damp brush.

Element is a medium-dark, coppered red with warm undertones and chunky glitter and light pink sparkle. It had a drier, looser texture in the pan, which resulted in more “powdery” application (glittery, really). This one was better applied with a damp brush and patted on, which I found to minimize the looseness, as dry application sheered out easily and resulted in some fall out. It lasted for eight hours both wet and dry, but the wet application had almost no fall out while the dry application had a little (nothing major, though, and certainly impressive for a glittery eyeshadow).
Melt Cosmetics Ruby Spar (LE, ) is lighter, cooler (95% similar). LORAC Desert Rose (PiP, ) is lighter (95% similar). Sephora + Pantone Universe Marsala Glitter (LE, ) is less shimmery (90% similar). Magnetic is a medium purple with warmer undertones and a sparkling, glittery finish. It had semi-sheer coverage applied dry and was opaque when applied damp. The consistency was soft, blendable, but a little loose in the pan, which resulted in chunky bits getting dislodged, so I had the best luck when I applied in thinner layers with a dampened brush. The color lasted for eight hours both wet and dry, though dry had a little fall out (which is as described). Make Up For Ever D926 Blueberry (DC, $21.00) is less shimmery (90% similar). Lethal Cosmetics Revolve (P, $6.50) is darker (90% similar). ColourPop Moon Lit (LE, $7.00) is darker, warmer (90% similar). Lightyear is a bright, medium green with warm, yellowy undertones and a glittery finish. It had medium coverage applied dry and was opaque when applied damp. The consistency was smoother and easier to work with than the other three shades as it sat better on the skin and wasn’t too firm or too loose in the pan. I had a little fall out after eight hours when I applied it dry, but I had almost no noticeable fall out when I applied it damp. ColourPop Cusp (P, $6.00) is less shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Sugarpill Tipsy (P, $13.00) is less shimmery (90% similar). Give Me Glow Zack (P, $7.00) is cooler (90% similar). ColourPop Up Shot (P, $5.00) is less shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Granite is a medium-dark gray with neutral-to-warm undertones and a sparkling finish. This shade had a smoother consistency with less chunky sparkle, so it held together better and applied more easily on the lid. It had softer, medium coverage that had slight fall out when applied dry, while damp application yielded opaque coverage with almost no fall out after eight hours. ColourPop Full Metal (DC, $4.50) is less shimmery, lighter, cooler (95% similar). KVD Beauty Black No. 1 (DC, $21.00) is lighter (90% similar). Lithium is a medium-dark bronze with warm undertones and lighter gold sparkle. It had a very smooth, blendable texture that felt almost wet to the touch, and it applied well to bare skin with almost no fall out during application. When worn, the color lasted for eight hours regardless of wet/dry application, but I noticed a little fall out when I wore it dry. The coverage was semi-opaque dry and opaque wet. ColourPop Place Between (LE, $4.50) is less shimmery (95% similar). Urban Decay Lithium (P, $22.00)(100% similar). Anastasia Truffle Glitter (P, $12.00) is less shimmery (90% similar). Vega is a medium-dark blue with strong, cool undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. It had medium coverage applied dry, which brightened and intensified to opaque coverage when applied damp. Galaxy is a deep gray with a hint of teal shimmer/sparkle. It had semi-sheer to semi-opaque coverage applied dry, which lasted for eight hours with slight fall out over time. When I used it with a damp brush, it was fully opaque and much smoother, which resulted in more even application and very little fall out after eight hours. The texture was fairly smooth overall, but it was still blendable on the skin. Tom Ford Beauty Metallic Denim #3 (PiP, ) is less shimmery, lighter (95% similar). Great eye looks! I like the way you photographed these from the side so we can see the multi-dimensional glitter and duochrome.
Thanks, Pearl!
(Sigh) For me, I feel like this palette came a little too late. I love my Moondust single in Vortex, but at $20 a single, I was hesitant to add more, and was hoping for a value kit to be released. But during that time, I filled my stash with Colour Pop singles. After looking at online swatches of this Moondust palette for days, I finally drove to my local Ulta, swatched the new palette and compared it to my CP singles, which are just as gorgeous if not more, and nope, can’t justify $50 for this. But I’m sure many others will enjoy
Nice! I’m glad you were able to dupe it and remind yourself just how gorgeous your CP singles are!
Christine, the UD Moondust palette is labelled as Permanent here, but Nordstroms and Macy’s has listed it as LE. I thought it was LE too. So is it really permanent? I noticed a number of readers were waiting until later to buy theirs, but if it’s LE, it might not be around.
UD told me it was permanent when I asked a couple of weeks ago.
I agree with you! there is no reason to purchase this if you have CP shadow dupes. Not to mention CP shadows last for 3 years! amazing… I really prefer CP for eyeshadow but even with international shipping with the tax the bill is not worth it for me :/
I absolutely ADORE Lithium but I have Don’t Settle and both of those Anastasia dupes are on my Wish List and I’d rather buy a single or two than the whole palette. The other shades I like are also ones for which I have dupes – in some cases not as pigmented but given my age and the fact that I tend to go for more subdued looks, they’re really all I need.
Ah ha! Money saved 😉
I really like the packaging of this, though, and that’s not usually something I care about (except in terms of convenience/ease of use). At first, I thought the lettering of “moondust” on the palette was clear and couldn’t figure out how I could see your HAND, rather than the shadows, through the lid. After looking and looking, I realized the letters were recessed and mirrored and I was seeing the reflection of something sort of flesh toned (Mellan, maybe) but at first, I was stumped!
I don’t love glitter enough to get a whole palette of it, one or two singles would be enough for me – and would last me a lifetime!
Totally understand, Lulle! 😉 I think the palette is interesting, but I like the idea of singles instead, as well, since they are easier to store.
I wanted this but it’s so much smaller than I anticipated (I was thinking the shadows would be about the size of the Electric palette’s) AND in Canada it’s a whopping $75! Absolutely love the looks you did, though! 🙂
The palette itself is definitely oddly sized – the component is overly large compared to the pans, so I don’t know why they didn’t make the pans larger…
Sooooo chunky-looking. 🙁 Galaxy is beautiful, though.
I don’t know if it’s just how I apply makeup to my actual eye, but they didn’t read chunky on the skin! I am partially thinking it is due to the fact that my arm skin is DRY like a desert, but my eyelids are normal.
i think we have a comment thread on really great moisturizers somewhere here. 😉
These are too sparkly for me, but they looked great on the salesperson in the store. I did swatch several in the grey/brown/purple range, and they didn’t seem chunky to me at all.
This palette isn’t for me (I’m too lazy to work these into a ‘look,’ and I don’t think I’d enjoy wearing them solo), but the looks you did with this are KILLER. Absolutely amazingly stunning.
Good for you, Heather! It’s awesome that you know what will (or won’t) work for you/your habits!
This performed MUCH better than I thought it was going to. Uh oh…. now I want it 😛
Uh oh!
Love it! This has been on my mental “wishlist” ever since I first caught wind of it. And I’m not even a huge glitter wearer! The thing is, these don’t have that really loose, super fallout prone look to them. So that sells it to me, right there!
One big question, though. Does anyone know whether Ulta or another retailer is selling these instore?
I think Ulta might have them in-store, but you should be able to check online and see if it even shows up nearby!
Both Sephora and Ulta are selling in-store. You can do use the Find In Store feature online to see if your local stores have them yet. I was able to swatch it at my local Ulta. It’s a very beautiful palette, Lithium was my fave
I went to Ulta today and mine had it in store ?
I picked mine up at Ulta a week and a half ago!
I saw it at ULTA yesterday, as well as Sephora/JCPenney (I didn’t notice if Sephora had it, as it’s a temp location, and smaller, which means less selection, and more crowded). I passed-for now, LOL!-but I’ll likely grab in a few months, along with some singles, when my budget allows…
Thanks everyone! I just nabbed one at the Ulta in Tempe, which has me questioning my sanity because I was going to wait till autumn.
Well, you can blame it all on the inferno heat LOL I know you will rock this palette Nancy!
Oh, I would LOVE to blame it on the 110° heat yesterday! Especially after walking all the way from Petsmart to Ulta, which is waaay across the enormous parking lot. Would have waited, but the SA told me it was LE, so I jumped on that last one!
True sign of a makeup addict! Will hike across scorching desert for a LE palette LOL I was in Phoenix one time, when it was like 100 F, parked at a strip mall, and thought I could just walk to the Starbucks that was like 100 ft away. I got out of the car, took about 10 steps, and it was like, what was I thinking?? I need to move my car closer!!
Super excited to get this palette…on my birthday…in NOVEMBER! Husband surprised me by coming to Ulta and buying this palette for me on the spot (he loved the sparkle) and then telling me I would have to wait until my birthday. It’s going to be hard to wait!
That is a long wait! You can do it 😀
I’m not a glitter person but these are really pretty colors and quality. If Galaxy came in a single I’d buy it!
If only!
My wishlist gets bigger and bigger :/ What a gorgeous palette! perfect if you go out at night
It would be great for a night out!
I am a matte neutrals person but this is such a fun palette . Love the sparkle. Fallout has not been much of a problem .
It is! And it sticks pretty well.
Ahhh…this looks really awesome but I know I rarely wear eyeshadow…(I own several colors of Marc Jacobs gel liner, and that is what I use to highlight my eyes. Like burgundy, Blu or teal.) This is very tempting though, and that is coming from a person who literally doesn’t own one single eyeshadow pallette. I normally only buy things in singles because I’m so picky, but I actually like every color in this, which is a first.
How interesting! Do let us know if you end up trying this palette, Andrea 🙂 Could be fun!
I was wondering the other day on your “next trend” post what would replace the smoky eye – I think now that it’s a sparkly eye! Sephora has been launching a glut of glittery eye products lately, with this one being most prominent. This particular set doesn’t work for me (too many brights I would never use) but I love the idea of fine glitter coming back for eyes! And the eye looks that you created are awesome.
A sparkly eye would be a fun alternative to a smoky eye!
or better yet a glittery smokey eye is what i did with these and they came out so pretty i did two different ones and they got tons of compliments. i took my tartelette and used the matte shades in my crease then took the moon dust colors one day i did the blue color vega and the other day did galaxy and what i did was apply them wet on the lid up into the crease and then use a fluffy brush to soften blend in the edges quick easy glitter smokey eyes and actually appropriate for any time as i wore one of them to a family dinner function and got tons of compliments.
I. Must. Have! So pretty. Love both looks you created. Someone has a birthday on August 5th. Hmmm…me!
I hope you enjoy it, Susan! 🙂
Fabulous eye looks Christine – the colours are beautiful. I think you could wear these shades over others that you have in your collection to give them some extra oomph.
Thanks so much, Genevieve!
Interesting colours in the palette! I’m not the biggest fan of this formula but hey it probably is somebody else’s dream palette haha!
There ya go 🙂
This one is too much glitter for me. The new Nordstrom C’est Chic’ Eyeshadow Palette is all matte. A few of each is always what I’m looking for. Money saved.
Look wonderful on you, Christine.
Thanks a lot, Linda! 🙂
I would get this if I didn’t already have the Urban Spectrum palette and love it so much. I love the look of Granite, Lightyear and Galaxy here though and I love how ‘galactic’ your first eye look is!
Thank you, Claire!
I think these are really pretty, but I too have really fab Colour Pop ones that I like and wear often. If it ends up being on sale at some point, I’ll most likely buy it then. Otherwise it’s not a must have for me even though I’m itching to own it. Beautiful pics there Christine!
Thank you, Trish!
Love both eye looks you created especially the 1st one it looks so cool.?
Thanks, Natalie!
The looks you did are really beautiful!
So I tend to not wear my shadows damp and I don’t know how these would look if applied dry to the eyes (I’m guessing that the looks you did above were with a damp brush?). Do you think this palette would still be good for those who use shadows dry only?
The looks in the post are applied damp for the most part! I tested both ways but only photographed the ones that looked decent (dry, they work better as a 1-2 color look)!
Ok, I guess that’s not necessarily a deal breaker. I think I’ll go see if I can find a palette to swatch. Thanks, Christine!
They can be used dry as shadow toppers if you pat them on with your finger.
That might be cool. I’ll go check it out at least. Thanks Rachel!
I saw this in store on Friday and I still want to get it even if it’s smaller….. Dang pretty pressed glitter for sure! I also don’t feel like the packaging was “cheap” but it was very light weight compared to their other palettes and smaller than the Electric one. But these shades are more expensive overall, so I do understand the higher price for less product in the palette.
Specter reminded me of what the Too Faced Semi-Sweet Pink Sugar eyeshadow should have been like. lol
I should also say that I would have to use a glitter base with my hooded eyes just because the friction would knock some of the larger particles off my lids. 😉
Is there a glitter base you would recommend?
I like liquid ones from Lit Cosmetics and EyeKandy (sugar based) or stick ones from Too Faced or Violet Voss. They all work with the Moondust Eyeshadows I have.
It is very sparkly and pretty to wear!
I don’t need it but I want it!!!
Haha!
Idk, this seems so much more “meh” than I was expecting. Like the Gwen Stefani palette, I’m underwhelmed again. I expected it to be…bigger…sparklier…the colors even more duochrome and unusual…I don’t know why this isn’t doing it for me. The singles are cool and I also hoped for more of a deal here.
Money saved 🙂
Just picked this up today along with makeup forever #4 palette. I’m hoping I like these as much as some of the singles I bought. I usually use studio fix spray to make them wet would you recommend using that or so you think Urban decay spray would work too? I have both ???
I’m not sure – I don’t use those on my eyes personally!
Really doesn’t look overly glittery. But in today’s post, I want nothing. Psych! Red letter day. Learned a fair amount from the readership, as well.
I show your first look you created to my bf and he said it looks beautiful. To me it looks like galaxy on your eyes. I’m so happy that even a guy could appreciate how beautiful eye makeup could be. 😀 I don’t have any glitter eyeshadows. do you recommend getting this or single glitter instead?
It depends on whether you’d wear the palette shades often or not! I think spending half the cost on just one single you love might be more worth it if you wouldn’t reach for the palette!
I’m so impressed with the lack of fallout! Those looks you created are also fabulous, Christine. 🙂
Bought it and love it! I think they perform much better dampened with water or fixing spray, or used over a sticky base. The shimmer is insane. 🙂
I really love the two eye looks you did.
I love the photos you take show showcase the shift in duochrome/sparkly colors. Great job as always.
This is such a fun, original palette! I wouldn’t get enough use out of it, but I definitely feel the pull!
It is very fun!
How do you recommend applying these shadows? Wet? With some kind of base? Thanks for the advice! Just picked this palette up and I’m in love! Can’t wait to use it this weekend!
I would just use an adhesive base myself!
really wish they were singles. i bought the palette cause i was like, they’re not all bad but then i returned it an hour later cause i couldnt justify the palette lol i really just want 1. maybe 2.
Some of the new singles are somewhat similar!
