Audacity in London

Lancome Audacity in London Eyeshadow Palette ($69.00 for 0.576 oz.) includes 16 eyeshadows and most of them are terrible. Even when they swatched decently–which is probably being generous–they applied worse on the lid, as the thin, dusty textures did no favors on my lids. The eyeshadows applied unevenly, patchily, and often looked like faded versions of the way they did in the pan, which meant that they tended to muddy and lose contrast as they are more muted colors to begin. If the palette was actually pigmented, blendable, long-wearing, and easy to use, the color scheme would be more unique. Instead, we have a palette that does little well.

The brand describes the eyeshadows are “ultra-creamy” with “high-pigment metallics” that can be used as a top coat or on “the whole lid for a dramatic, glitter effect.” If the eyeshadows were more blendable and less prone to fading, it might work for someone who likes sheer washes of color, but I just think the formula is poorly done across the board. Some of the eyeshadows felt really firm and chalk-like; they were noisy eyeshadows as they felt so dry and were so thin on the skin.

The four shades that are positioned horizontally in the palette are just massive glitterbombs with seemingly little binder, and they did not work alone or patted over one of the other eyeshadows unless applied with a glitter adhesive. I tried them over three primers–MAC Paint Pot, Smashbox 24HR Primer, Too Faced Shadow Insurance–and the performance was still dismal over a primer. It is funny, because a lot of high-end brands use a creamier, almost wet-like formula with their glitter eyeshadows these days, which may not be foolproof or yield fallout-free wear yet, they are usable and function decently without a primer.

Queen's Lace

Queen’s Lace is a light beige with warm, yellow undertones and a matte finish. It had a thin, dusty texture that had a tendency to sheer out on the skin and fade quickly (six hours or less of wear). It had semi-opaque color coverage.

Trenchcoat

Trenchcoat is a soft, medium brown with moderate warm undertones and a satin finish. It had semi-opaque color payoff, but the texture was firmer and drier in the pan, and I really had to jab at the surface with my brush to get any powder to come off of it. This shade lasted for six and a half hours on me.

Woody Bar

Woody Bar is a soft, medium brown with warm, yellow undertones and a matte finish. It had medium color coverage, which wasn’t buildable as the texture was dry, powdery, and did not want to adhere to the lid. I felt like it mattified my lid and then made it so nothing more would stick, yet I could barely see it on! It seemed to last six hours, but it was very hard to tell since so little adhered to my lid in the first place.

Rich History

Rich History is a soft, medium lavender with neutral-to-cool undertones and a satin finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation, but the texture was so dry and dusty that so little of the color adhered to the skin. As soon as I tried to blend it, I had a ton of fallout and almost nothing left on the lid. The best guess I had at wear time was maybe five hours, because there was just so little to start with.

London Is Callin'

London is Callin’ is a muted, mauve-y purple with a smattering of gold shimmer over a matte finish. The shimmer separated from the base color, so it looked matte applied to the lid. The texture was dry, firm, and chalky to the touch, which made it extremely difficult to blend out on the lid. It lasted for five hours on me before fading.

Purple Queen

Purple Queen is a deep, purple taupe with subtle, warmer undertones and a cooler overtone paired with a frosted finish. Oh, the joy of this shade, because it was one of the most pigmented shades in the palette, and the texture was usable–it actually blended, adhered decently, and didn’t sheer away to nothing with a soft breeze. It lasted for seven hours on me.

Fresh Garden

Fresh Garden is a light-medium green with warm, yellow undertones and a pearly sheen. It had decent color payoff, but the texture was firmer and difficult to blend out; this was another shade that required jabbing and pushing at the top layer to get the product to come off of the pan’s surface. It wore well for six and a half hours.

Misty Morning

Misty Morning is a dark, muted olive green with warm undertones and a satiny sheen. It had semi-opaque pigmentation, but it was ruined by the dry, dusty texture that sheered out and faded within four and a half hours on me. Even over primer, it looked half-gone by the seventh hour.

Steel

Steel is a soft, greenish pewter with a frosted finish. The consistency was very powdery and loose in the pan, which resulted in a lot of fallout during application, as it did not stick well to bare skin. I had the best luck using a fingertip to press the eyeshadow onto the lid. It lasted for six hours on me.

Rainy Afternoon

Rainy Afternoon is a medium silver with cool undertones and a sparkling, frost finish. The texture was gritty, a little grainy, and incredibly prone to sheering out on the lid. It applied unevenly and lasted for five hours on me.

Purple Pageantry is a dark gray with a mostly matte finish. It had decent color payoff, but the firmer, drier texture did no favors on the lid, where it was difficult to blend out and always looked patchy. It actually seemed to look worse the longer I spent blending it out. It started to fade after six hours.

Midnight Purple

Midnight Purple is a blackened navy blue with a faint hint of lighter blue shimmer. It was ridiculously stiff and firm in the pan; I scraped away multiple layers to get any product to show up in a swatch. The eyeshadow did not want to blend when applied, and it applied unevenly to begin with, so blending was not just a nice-to-have but a necessity with this shade… but it always looked terrible to me. It wore for six hours on me.

Midnight Haze

Midnight Haze is a soft, orangey copper with chunks of copper and gold glitter. It had sheer color coverage with a gritty, chunky texture. It felt more like a loosely pressed glitter than anything else, and it did not seem to have a lot of creaminess or binder to it, so the glitter did not stick without an actual adhesive.

Garden Rose

Garden Rose is a muted, mauvey purple with chunky brown and lilac glitter. This seemed to have even less of a base color compared to the first glittery shade and was primarily chunky glitter. Again, it had little staying power (like an hour) and massive fallout without an adhesive base.

SoHo Lights

SoHo Lights is a soft green with chunky green and silvery gold glitter. It had almost no color payoff, due to the incredibly dry texture that felt like shredder paper. The glitter came off of it in large chunks, and it was not usable without a glitter adhesive–it would not adhere whatsoever, whether patted on the lid with a fingertip, damp brush, or used alone.

Tower Bridge

Tower Bridge is a bright silver with chunks of silver and white glitter. It had a stronger base color–semi-sheer, slightly buildable–but the drier, looser consistency resulted in a ton of fallout during application as well as during wear (almost no glitter was visible on the lid after an hour of wear).

Urban Decay Bruise XX Vintage Nail Lacquer ($10.00 for 0.30 fl. oz.) is a deep, purplish brown base with green-to-teal pearl that shifts. The shimmer was rather fine, and I did have some trouble smoothing out the pearl and polish so that it looked like an even, shimmery finish–looked a little more like threads of shimmer, unfortunately! The consistency was thicker and did not self-level as it dried down. It was fully opaque after two coats, and it lasted for seven days on me with minor tip wear.

Roach

Urban Decay Roach XX Vintage Nail Lacquer ($10.00 for 0.30 fl. oz.) is a deep, reddish brown with warm undertones and shimmer that shifted from dirty, olive gold to warm brown. The consistency was smooth, not too thick or too thin, and it applied beautifully to the nails with rich, opaque color in two coats, though one was almost opaque. I typically get a week of wear out of the brand’s formula.

Plague

Urban Decay Plague XX Vintage Nail Lacquer ($10.00 for 0.30 fl. oz.) is a rich, blackened purple with cool, violet sparkle and fine pearl. It had opaque color coverage with two coats (almost opaque in one). The consistency was thin without being watery, so it didn’t pool along the edges of my nails nor did it sheer out or appear uneven on the nail. It dried down to a modewrate shine, but I think a top coat is necessary for true glossiness. I wore this one and only had minor tip wear after seven days.

Radium

Urban Decay Radium XX Vintage Nail Lacquer ($10.00 for 0.30 fl. oz.) is a bright, medium-dark blue with cool undertones and lighter blue pearl. It had more of a pearly finish–not quite metallic and not frosted or sparkly, as the particle size was rather fine. The texture was thicker, and it was hard to manage the amount of product on the nail; one coat was really sufficient with this one unless you were very, very careful and wiped away excess to get a thinner initial coat. Urban Decay’s nail polish lasts around a week with minor tip wear for me.

Frostbite

Urban Decay Frostbite XX Vintage Nail Lacquer ($10.00 for 0.30 fl. oz.) is a deep, blackened navy blue with fine bits of lighter blue pearl. It had intense color coverage with a smooth consistency that wasn’t too thick or too thin, so it covered the nail evenly and didn’t require any extra work to maneuver it across the nail. I typically get a week of wear with Urban Decay’s formula with minor tip wear.

UV-B

Urban Decay UV-B XX Vintage Nail Lacquer ($10.00 for 0.30 fl. oz.) is a bright, medium-dark cobalt blue with cool, purplish undertones and fine pearl. It had opaque pigmentation after two coats of polish, though the texture was more watery than ideal. It resulted in slightly streakier shimmer, as you could see where the brush wobbled and wiggled down my nail. It seemed to self-level a fair amount, but it wasn’t completely gone after drying down. This shade lasted for seven days with minor tip wear on me.

Cle de Peau Les Annees Folles Holiday Eye Color Palette ($125.00 for 0.31 oz.) is a new, limited edition holiday palette that features eight eyeshadows. Each row of eyeshadows is actually removeable and can be put into one of the brand’s quad compacts. The formula was very finely-milled, but it was so soft that it was prone to sheering out as it was a little thin and dusty, though the formula blended well on the skin. If you’re someone who wants very true-to-pan color and intense coverage that lasts, you’ll likely be disappointed with this palette. If you’re someone who likes softer, more muted takes on color and doesn’t mind using an eyeshadow primer, it might be more in your wheelhouse (but it is undoubtedly expensive, so there are numerous other options that are more versatile–e.g. capable of delivering intense pigmentation but can also be sheered down).

Les Annees Folles #3

Les Annees Folles #3 is a light-medium yellow gold with warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It had great color payoff with a soft, smooth, lightly dusty texture that wasn’t too thin or too firm in the pan. This shade was easy to work with and lasted for seven hours on me.

Les Annees Folles #4

Les Annees Folles #4 is a medium gray with neutral undertones and larger, chunkier sparkle. The texture was firm and stiffer in the pan, and it was actually not the same gritty, drier texture that I’d expect of a Lustre finish. The Joues Contraste Blush formula is supposed to have a “silky, delicate texture” with “buildable coverage” that gives a “radiant glow.” This is one of four exclusives to Chanel’s website, though it has been released before (but I don’t remember having it). Hyperfresh had mostly opaque color coverage, and it was less buildable than a lot of other Chanel blushes I’ve tried in the past. The consistency was thin, a little drier but had a softness to it that I’d expect from the formula. I struggled to spread and diffuse the color evenly across the cheeks, though, and I ended up having to cheat to soften the edges by using flesh-toned looser powder and a buffing brush. The blush stayed on the skin well for eight and a half hours.

MAC Nutcracker Sweet Smoky Eye Compact ($39.50 for 0.27 oz.) is a warm-toned, neutral eyeshadow palette with nine shades. There are some nicer shades in the palette, but there are also some real misses, and at this price point, that makes it far less enticing. There are better neutral palettes out there, especially of the warm-toned variety.

Too-dle-oo

Too-dle-oo is a light, golden beige with warm undertones and a frosted sheen. It had good pigmentation with a slightly firmer texture, but it was still fairly easy to apply and blend out on the lid. This shade wore well for eight hours on me.

Deception

Deception is muted, medium-dark taupe brown with a sparkling, glittery gold finish. It had good pigmentation with a chunkier texture, so it tended to have fallout during application and then some moderate fall out during wear. The eyeshadow blended out well and lasted for seven and a half hours on me.

In general, the permanent line has been more consistent in performance--and higher performance at that--compared to limited edition launches, but it can really depend.

The Matte finish tends to have a firmer press and a bit of thinness compared to other matte formulas on the market, so MAC matte eyeshadows tend to build up better and have better wear-time without fallout as they're not powdery at all. Some of the newer matte finish shades have had a more velvety quality to them that gives them a softer feel but aren't powdery; these have been easier to blend and are often more pigmented in one layer.

The Lustre finish is designed to have sheerer pigmentation, and it often has more sheer to medium coverage with a drier, dustier consistency that can be hard to apply with a dry brush. Lustre finish shades can suffer from fallout during application, too. They are the old school version of an eyeshadow "topper." I would recommend applying with a fingertip or applying with a dampened brush to get smoother, more even coverage and minimize fallout.

The Satin finish is few and far in-between, but it is softer and more yielding than the Matte finish but performs similarly. The Veluxe Pearl finish is one of the creamier takes within the range, and newer shades released in the finish tend to have more moderate, silicone-like slip. I've found that Veluxe Pearl finish shades tend to have more semi-opaque pigmentation and are more consistent in performance than some of the other finishes.

One thing I've found with MAC eyeshadows is that they tend to last longer without primer than the average brand (eight hours). While some eyeshadow shades don't swatch well, they often apply better in practice--as in on the eyes!--than just swatched on the skin. Sweet Dreams

Sweet Dreams is a light taupe with neutral-to-warm undertones and a matte finish. The color darkened noticeably when applied on bare skin, compared to the pan color, and had mostly opaque coverage. The texture was soft, smooth but firm without any excess powder that would kick up in the pan. It wore well for eight hours on me.

Dewdrop

Dewdrop is a sparkling, medium peach with warm undertones and a glittery finish. It was a Lustre finish, which is supposed to be sheerer, and it was–semi-sheer at best–with a chunkier, drier, and looser consistency that was a real mess to work with. The color did not work well on its own or even over regular eyeshadow primer, as it needed a tacky base. It lasted for five hours and had noticeable fallout.

Cake & Biscuits

Cake & Biscuits is a muted, medium brown with warm, orange undertones and a matte finish. It had good color payoff, but the texture was rather firm, which made it hard to apply and blend out on the skin. I noticed signs of fading after seven and a half hours of wear.

Licorice Lane

Licorice Lane is a deep, muted taupe with cool undertones and a matte finish.
