Steel(etto)

Marc Jacobs Beauty Steel(etto) Eye-Conic Multi-Finish Eyeshadow Palette ($49.00 for 0.21 oz.) is a new, limited edition cooler-toned palette (!!) that performed well! It has seven shades ranging from beige to inky black with five variations on taupe between the two. The shades coordinated well with each other with a nice mix of depth, though I caution that all but the beige and black hues went on deeper than they looked, so you might want to swatch and play a bit to get a better sense of composition and depth. The mattes were all more substantial, more velvety in feel, which helped them blend and work well with Sparkling, which was very sparkly.

Rule

Rule is a pale beige with subtle, cool undertones and a matte finish. It had nearly opaque color payoff that adhered well to bare skin and blended out easily while only sheering out a smidgen (without a primer). The texture was soft, silky, and smooth, though there was slight powderiness in the pan, which could result in fallout if I wasn’t careful to tap off the excess prior to applying it to my eye area. It lasted well for seven and a half hours on me before I noticed slight fading.

The Concrete

The Concrete is a medium taupe with neutral-to-cool undertones and a matte finish. It had excellent pigmentation with a smooth, velvety texture that was a smidgen powdery in the pan, but it applied beautifully with even coverage that didn’t sheer out too easily. The eyeshadow diffused nicely along the edges, though. This shade stayed on well for eight hours on me before fading a bit.

Jungle

Jungle is a medium, purplish-taupe with cool undertones and a matte finish. It had nearly opaque pigmentation in a single layer, which was easily built up to full coverage with a tap more on top. The eyeshadow had a smooth, velvety consistency that was finely-milled and blendable without losing its intensity on my skin. It wore nicely for eight hours before it started to show signs of wear.

Sidewalks

Sidewalks is a dirty beige with subtle, warm undertones and a bright, metallic sheen. It had opaque color coverage that adhered well to bare skin and smoothed out easily. The texture was silky and soft, but there was some powderiness in the pan from it being more loosely-pressed. The eyeshadow applied well but had a touch of fallout when I blended it out. On me, it lasted for just over eight hours before fading noticeably.

Become

Become is a medium-dark taupe-brown with neutral-to-warm undertones and a matte finish. It had rich color payoff with a smooth, velvety texture that was a smidgen powdery in the pan but applied evenly and blended out easily along the edges. It stayed on well for eight hours on me before fading slightly.

Sparkling

Sparkling is a dirty, taupe-brown base with subtle, warmer undertones and flecks of blue and teal sparkle. It had good pigmentation in a single layer, but I found that it was a bit harder to apply with fluffier, more typical eyeshadow packing brushes. I’d recommend using fingertips or a flat, synthetic brush–or better yet, use a dampened brush. I tried it dry, and I had no trouble packing and pressing it on and getting solid eight-hour wear (with slight fallout), but using it with a wet brush, even with just water, minimized the fallout and made it faster to apply it.

Catwalks

Catwalks is a deep, cool-toned black with a matte finish. It had good pigmentation that was buildable to full coverage with less than half of a layer more. The texture was soft, lightly powdery in the pan, but blendable and easy to work with on my lid. It lasted nicely for eight hours before I noticed any fading.

This looks like a nice palette but I wonder how many looks I could get out of it. Wondering if it’s too one dimensional ? Love a gray eye shadow look and the gray purple shadow is a cool color. But I think between Pat McGraft’s Platinum Bronze and Kevyn Aucoin”s Nude Pop I’m covered. Still tempting though. I don’t have any Marc Jacobs eye shadows.

Check out Mel Thompson’s video on the palette. She got some really gorgeous looks out of it. I was thinking it reminded me a lot of the Kevin Aucoin Nude Pop but I actually think it will make a really good companion for it. These have more browns and that was what I felt was lacking and there’s really nothing like Sparkling in Nude Pop and it’s just so pretty. Definitely check out Mel’s demonstration!

From the swatches you posted Christine, Jungle is disappointing to me in terms of color, as I don’t see much of a purple tbh. Concrete is a bit muddy and darker than I thought (I had the feeling that it is a darker taupe/café au lait). I like Sparkling and Sidewalks though. Glad that I waited for your swatches and didn’t rush to order this palette.

Love Punked, and true, there is a distinct similarity, but more variation in Punked. Thanks for reminding me. I have it stored with the
Lunatick palettes in a sugar skull, and forget about it. You might like Supernatural and Vampira.

Gorgeous eye look Christine. I’m a bit intimidated by this palette as I usually (well always) play with warm toned shadows. I might pick this one up.

The Concrete and Become look awfully similar for inclusion together in a palette that isn’t huge but I like both of them and love the fact that they seem to apply MUCH cooler than they look in the pan. A year or two ago, I’d have been racing out the door to get this but my makeup saturation/ennui means I can appreciate this palette but not need to buy it (and I think my one bad experience with a MJ palette probably helps)

Jessica Avatar

I am on a low-buy, so I do have to be very mindful of what I’m purchasing. But this is gorgeous and really tempting. But I do have the Kevyn Aucoin NudePop palette, ABH Sultry palette, Pat McGrath’s Platinum Bronze palette, Viseart’s Cool Mattes palette, and Melt’s Gun Metal stack. I feel like I am set, but this is really lovely and giving me all of the feels.

Jane Avatar

I absolutely DO NOT need this palette, but I’ve been eyeing it since it came out. Everything classic is here in one slim palette. So even if I can dupe it, the compactness and very good review makes it one that I’ll be looking at throughout the year (like a cat in the distance, stalking).

Helene Avatar

This is going on my wish list. I probably have dupes, but that would mean working from a few singles and another few palettes, having everything in a sleek MJ palette is what I find so tempting. I’ve been waiting for some more cool toned palettes and this one really speaks to me.
I will see in a month or two if I still feel the same and get it then, if I cab and still want it. I don’t want to let the FOMO rule over my economy. 🙂

Sue Avatar

Tempted. Veeerry tempted. But I have my Make Up Forever Artist Vol 1 Nudes You Need and Naked 2, and I love them both dearly.

Christine, how do you think the MJ formula compares to the MUFE Artist Vol 1 (the old MUFE formula)?

Susan Avatar

I actually love love love this palette, and I think I may pick it up when the next sale at sephora happens, I just can’t justify regular price however, but this is right up my alley especially in the winter time……. cool colors just look better in cool/cold light imho.
Cheers
