MAC x Helmut Newton Point 'n' Shoot Eyeshadow Quad Review, Photos, Swatches
MAC x Helmut Newton Point ‘n’ Shoot Eyeshadow Quad
MAC Point ‘n’ Shoot Eyeshadow Quad ($32.00 for 0.19 oz.) contains four neutral shades–yellowy beige, grayish taupe, brownish taupe, and deep black. The first three shades were nice–pigmented, blendable, long-wearing–but the last shade was very difficult to blend out as it was a much firmer, stiffer product in the pan.
Real Fantasy is a light, buttery yellow with soft, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had good pigmentation with a soft, smooth texture that wasn’t too firm or too powdery. It blended out easily on the skin, and it wore well for seven and a half hours on me. KVD Beauty Entomology (DC, )(100% similar). Sephora Whitewashed (DC, $10.00)(100% similar). Hard Currency is a medium-dark gray-leaning taupe with cool undertones and a matte finish. The consistency was soft, just a touch dusty, but it was blendable, didn’t sheer out too readily, and didn’t look dry or powdery on the skin. Influential is a dark taupe-brown with neutral-to-warm undertones and a matte finish. It had good color payoff, but the texture was firmer in the pan, which made it harder to work with and blend out on the lid. The color started to fade after eight hours of wear. Point ‘n’ Shoot is a deep black with neutral-to-cool undertones paired with a matte finish. While it wasn’t Carbon, it was still Carbon-like: stiff in the pan and difficult to use–the color skipped and dragged, turned patchy when blended, and took a lot of effort just to manipulate into something decent. I had the best luck using a very feathery brush and lightly tapping it into the crease and then using Influential to soften and blend the edges. This shade wore for eight hours on me before fading. Makeup Atelier Natural Brown #5 (P, ) is darker, cooler, better quality (95% similar). Glaminatrix Shadow (PiP, $7.30) is warmer (95% similar). The swatches don’t look all that great… And the quad is much too similar to the 4 Pillars palette anyway, so it’s an easy skip.
Glad you can save some money!
I was really excited to see a matte black that wasn’t Carbon . . . But it’s basically Carbon under witness protection. I’ve never understood how MAC could create some truly amazing things but still have trouble making a matte black eyeshadow. It’s just become a long-running inside joke at this point and I personally think it’s kind of hilarious.
LOL!
LOL – “Carbon under witness protection”! I had the exact same reaction but didn’t express it nearly so well!
That quad is the most boring I’ve ever seen LOL. Total pass for me.
Money saved!
Christine, just an FYI – MAC Copperplate is now DISCONTINUED (as are all the Matte2 shadows – talk about STUPID!) While on the subject, I emailed the “found an error” link last week or so about MAC Bare Study. It’s showing as “discontinued” in the original Paint Pots section of the Reviews but hasn’t been added to the “Pro Longwear Paint Pot” list, although it is indeed still available.
As for this quad, I actually quite like it, especially the shade Influential (just one more reason to purchase Cashmere Coat from Sephora!). I think it I were just getting into makeup and especially work appropriate/neutral makeup, I would get this right away. And it looks like I was right about Point n Shoot – it looks like Carbon with a new name so people won’t realize what crap it is!
Hey Mariella!
I’m behind on everything right now, including making updates to the product database (outside of whatever I’m swatching) – I’m really sorry for that!
Not a problem, Christine…you do so much (and your techies too, of course). I just wasn’t sure if my email reached the right person!
Is it that hard to make a black eyeshadow?
Apparently!
I think this is a sad tribute to Helmut. It looks like MAC didn’t sell enough of these quads from the Brant Brothers collection and basically recycled it, slapped one of his photos on the box (it’s not even on the product itself), and called it a Helmut Newton collection. And that black (Point N Shoot) looks like another recycled Carbon in disguise. Shame on MAC
I understand, Katherine! I thought it was odd that the packaging had all the design – and it’s SO bulky!
I get why it is the way it is, but it certainly doesn’t excite me. P&S doesn’t improve on carbon very much. Might have to get dupe copperplate some day, but have tailor gray….think it was my first paint pot, with painterly, ‘course. Talk about staples in stash.
It’s one of those quads that might work well for someone who doesn’t have a lot of basics/neutrals covered!
The colors I wear regularly, in one palette. I’m going to be all over this when it comes out. It’ll be perfect for travel, for me.
Enjoy it, Teasha! 🙂
Not bad for a basic 4 pan to use for a pin-up look. But it’s not great, though. I’d rather put my own together. Easier that way considering how many really good permanent shades there are to pick from. Feeling “meh” towards this one, however.
Putting your own together is a fantastic idea!
pretty versatile looking. i am a big fan of helmut newton`s work but given that its just a printed box i`ll be sitting this one out! thank you as always for the thorough reviews and swatches.
No problem, Kelly!
Ugh, I really love Hard Currency and Influential; the two other colours aren’t something I wear on the regular though, especially the black one.
Darn! Two out of four isn’t so good 🙁
Hard Currency is really nice. Love it.
I really like Hard Currency, and wish it were a single. Strictly speaking of color, I like the four shades individually, but together I think they make for a rather boring quad that would go muddy on me. And MAC needs to *really* work on its black shadows.
An easily dupable palette. Thanks for the review, Christine.
It’s a shame that the black was so poor, otherwise it would be quite a useful cool toned quad.
This one is tough for me, because I *really like* Hard Currency and Influential, but not the other two colors. They’re perfect hood/crease/blending colors for me, and it looks like (with the exception of Tailor Grey, a cream product), not that easy to dupe with permanent singles. I may end up purchasing this for two of the four colors! (and then maybe wish that Influential was more blendable — hopefully a good primer will help with that!)
