Anastasia Master Palette by Mario Eyeshadow Palette
Anastasia Master Palette by Mario Eyeshadow Palette ($45.00 for 0.30 oz.) contains twelve eyeshadows housed in a fairly slim, cardboard palette with a mirror on the interior of the lid. The formula in the palette seemed softer, more velvety than past iterations I’ve tried from Anastasia (even newer released singles), so the palette has more powder kickup and can be messier if you use rougher or denser brushes with it, but the shades are rather pigmented so you don’t need to use a lot of pressure to get enough product for application either. That softness didn’t result in the eyeshadow sheering out too easily, rather that the eyeshadows blended well together and seamlessly. In some ways, I felt like it could be a little muddied, as some of the tones and depths of shades were nearer to each other, but it will all be in the pairing, I think. The eyeshadows lasted for seven to eight and a half hours on me, which was good wear, and obviously, a primer should help extend wear further.
It is a warmer, more earthy set of neutrals; the colors are more in the mid-tone range with a few deeper shades but no really light shades. If you want an all-in-one palette, you may find this is missing a brow bone and/or transition shade (depending on your skin tone). I wish there was more of a difference between Hollywood and 5th Ave shades and between NYC and Muse, though. I think they could have been lighter/darker respectively and given added versatility to the color combinations here or even substituting one of the gold shades for a taupe or purple-leaning plum.
Each eyeshadow is 0.025 oz., which is the same as last year’s Self-Made palette, but the price point is $10.00 more for this year’s palette (Self-Made was $35.00). I understand that this is a collaboration between Anastasia and makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic, but it’s certainly a steep increase, even accepting that there is some additional price built-in to pay the collaborator. It is “worth it” with respect to the overall quality and amount of product you get, but I’m not keen on that drastic difference in price. As another example, Modern Renaissance palette is only $42 and includes two more eyeshadows, so I hope that this price point isn’t a preview of more price hikes to come!

Hollywood is a medium gold with warm, orange undertones and a soft, pearly shimmer. It had good color payoff with a smooth, lightly dusty texture that had a bit of fall out during application as some of the shimmer separated from the base when blended. NYC is a muted, smoldering reddish-brown with warm undertones and a pearly sheen. It had excellent pigmentation with a smooth, velvety texture that wasn’t too soft or too firm in the pan. Kim is a medium brown with warm, orange undertones and lighter, golden shimmer. The pigmentation was great, while the texture had a very silky, finely-milled feel to it that was a touch dusty and prone to kicking up an excessive amount of product in the pan. On the upside, the eyeshadow was easy to blend and apply to the skin, and while dustiness often translates into sheer or patchy color, this shade applied with good, even coverage. The color started to fade after eight hours of wear. Clinique Ample Amber (P, $17.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Make Up For Ever I634 Praline (DC, $21.00) is warmer (95% similar). Muse is a muted, medium-dark reddish brown with a hint of warmer, copper in its undertone paired with a metallic sheen. It was intensely pigmented with a smooth, velvety, and slightly denser texture that applied beautifully to bare skin. A little went a long way with this shade, so use less than you think you need, but it was easy to work with and lasted for eight and a half hours on me. Lancome Brune Glace (LE, $26.00) is more shimmery, lighter (95% similar). Tarte Fireside Chat (LE, ) is less shimmery (95% similar). Marina is a light-medium, peachy copper with warm undertones and a metallic sheen. The color payoff was fantastic–totally opaque with little product needed–and had a silky, smooth, and lightly creamy texture that was forgiving and easy to blend out on the skin. This shade wore well for eight hours before fading noticeably. Ciate Glisten (PiP, ) is more shimmery, lighter (95% similar). LORAC Iced Rose (PiP, $19.00) is lighter (95% similar). Claudia is a muted, dark gray with cool, bluish undertones and fine teal micro-shimmer over a mostly matte finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation, and it was the weakest shade with respect to coverage in the palette. It was soft, finely-milled, and a touch dusty, and it had a tendency to sheer out when blended–which worked for darkening other shades but was harder to work with if trying to use it on its own. The color wore well for seven hours on me. Terra Moons Split (P, $6.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Jouer Slate (PiP, ) is darker (95% similar). Chanel Gris Exquis (LE, $29.50) is lighter (95% similar). Cle de Peau Balance (Left) (PiP, ) is lighter (95% similar). Lula is a muted, medium-dark taupe brown with neutral-to-warm undertones and a matte finish. The pigmentation was fully opaque, while the texture was smooth, not too thin, and it wasn’t too firm or too soft in the pan, which made it the type of matte that was easy to apply and blend out while still getting true-to-pan coverage out of it. It wore for just over eight hours on me. Danessa Myricks Exposed (P, $18.00) is lighter (95% similar). Tarte Profesh (PiP, ) is cooler (95% similar). Huda Beauty Musk (PiP, ) is warmer (90% similar). Isabel is a muted, medium-dark orange with hints of brown and a matte finish. The color payoff was fully opaque and true-to-pan. It had a smooth, velvety texture that was finely-milled and effortless to blend on the skin. I had no trouble applying, blending, and using this shade on bare skin, which is often where matte eyeshadows go wrong. I noticed the color started to fade at the eight-hour mark. Bad Habit Aria (PiP, ) is lighter (95% similar). Make Up For Ever S604 Teak (DC, $21.00) is cooler (90% similar). MAC Brown Script (P, $17.00) is darker (95% similar). Violeta is a dark, reddish brown with subtle, warmer undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque color coverage, which was buildable to opaque coverage after two to three layers. The texture was soft, lightly dusty, and fairly easy to blend, but it was the “hardest” to use within the palette as it did take a bit of work to soften the edges as it seemed to melt a bit more on bare skin. If you used a primer, I do not think it would be an issue. On me, it lasted for eight and a half hours before creasing. Sydney Grace Maple Sugar (LE, $5.25) is darker (95% similar). 5th Ave is a light-medium, yellow gold with warm undertones and a metallic finish. It had great pigmentation with a very smooth, velvety texture that was soft enough that it was also dusty to the touch and kicked up the product in the pan easily. That softness did translate into good blendability, and it seemed to soften on the lid and looked a little “lived in” where the shimmer has a more luminous, glowing look to it. It wore well for eight hours before fading. Ardency Inn Sunday (DC, $21.00)(100% similar). Smashbox Champagne (PiP, ) is lighter (95% similar). Bronx is a dark, olive green with warm undertones and fine, golden shimmer. It had good color coverage with a soft, smooth consistency that felt a bit firmer compared to other shades, but it didn’t have the kickup that others had, so it was easier and more forgiving if you over-applied the color to your brush. This shade wore for just over eight hours on me. MAC Green Clean #3 (LE, ) is lighter (95% similar). Bad Habit Laurel (PiP, ) is more shimmery (95% similar). Paris is a dark, bronzy brown with warm, copper undertones and a golden, frosted finish. The pigmentation was fully opaque, while the texture was soft, smooth, and lightly creamy without being too dusty in the pan. Yay – THIS is what I’ve been waiting for! And a good rating too. Now I need to decide whether to resist or just get it because it is so nice.
12 eyeshadows seems like a cake walk to test now, compared to the 20+ eyeshadow palettes, lol!
Wow, very pretty set of colors, very earthy autumn/fall feel to them! Glad this scored well for those interested, but I’m skipping, as I have dupes in my stash. So happy to see Tom Ford Raw Jade listed as close dupe for Bronx.
Definitely a dupable palette!
Totally agree, the swatches do look nice but these look VERY dupable.
The price hike I notice aswell. I have the MR palette from ABH and love the shades in them but had 14 shades and this 12 and is more expensive hope the next palette will not be a price hike from the MR palette. But this palette seems like the perfect every day colours for my skintone (nc45-50) no light matte shades means no ashy shades for me so works for me. Can wait to receive the palette!
I was thinking that this might work particularly well for medium and dark skin tone, as everything skews a bit darker than the average palette – less very light/beige shades.
I have no doubt that it will be a hit, but the colors are not for me. Like I said in the sneak peek comments, red-based and orange shades really don’t flatter me, and they makeup almost half of this palette. I really thought it would be more neutral in undertones based on the promo pics, but it just leans so orange. I know your lighting is on point so I’ll trust your pics on that!
It is way, way warmer than the promo photo seemed to me. I did a double take after opening it wondering if I was crazy!
The promo pics are way off. So unfortunate. While I’m not searching mine, Christine’s pictures are accurate.
I totally noticed that too!
Lulle, I’m like you but this one seems a lot more wearable than the Modern Renaissance one. I only wish that first, very orangey beige had been a pearly white type of highlighter shade. As it stands now, I’m very much on the fence with this palette because the colours I like best are those for which I already have almost identical shadows and in multiples!
Agree 100%! If it had a light and pearly highlight, I think I would have purchased without hesitation. The way it is, though, seems a little heavy and a quite yellow leaning overall. 🙁 Ah well, not like I needed another neutral palette! And I’m totally in the same boat as you – the shades I find prettiest are the ones I can already dupe 3x over.
How do you feel this compares (aside from in price, which you already covered) to the Modern Renaissance palette? That palette is probably my favorite one I’ve ever owned. I’d love to own more shades like it… do you feel like this one is near/equal in quality? And do you feel like the two have too many similar shades (it looks like there’s at least some overlap) to make it worth owning both?
The formula feels a little different to me – it feels softer in general – though I’d say the mattes are comparable to the mattes in Modern Renaissance. An A is an A is an A though, for Anastasia eyeshadows (the formula isn’t marketed different from palette to palette, so they are reviewed on the same criteria).
You can compare any two palettes to see what dupes exist between the two through Palette vs. Palette on The Dupe List 🙂 http://www.temptalia.com/palette-vs-palette/?palette_1_search=Anastasia+Modern+Renaissance&palette_1=237986&palette_2_search=Anastasia+Master+Palette+by+Mario&palette_2=260977
Palette vs palette — what a cool feature! It’s like magic.
🙂
I decided last night that if I was waffling on whether to keep it, then I clearly don’t want it enough. I’d rather pick out individual colors from the dupe list. I have the same plan for the shades I like in the MR palette. Cheers to the dupe list!
Good idea, Lea! 🙂 Hope that works out for you!
I’m definitely getting this palette. However I’m glad you pointed out the price hike. My last Anastasia palette purchase was the Amrezy palette and that was $29. Granted, it had 10 shadows intead of 12 but still I’m like sheesh! The palette still seems to have cardboard and plastic packaging. I’m not thrilled about forking over that much for this, but I’m a sucker for the color selection plus it scored so well.
I’m not pleased about it. I almost did not mark it as a “Temptalia Recommends” solely because of the price hike, even though it is a great palette. The palette’s packaging is not any better/worse than the average eyeshadow palette ABH has put out – it is cardboard. Sturdy enough (I actually find cardboard better for traveling, as it absorbs bumps and drops better), but it’s not like they beefed up packaging with the price hike.
I don’t like the cardboard packaging because it feels cheap. Lorac Pro are the same price but the packaging is much nicer foe $42.
This palette is absolutely insanely warm toned. There isn’t even a token neutral shade thrown into the mix. Us cool gals are screwed over yet again :-/
Yes, it is definitely warm-toned!
Yeah, I wish I could hop on the warm toned eyeshadow trend but last time I tried it I looked dead lol
Call me shocked and awed. This is a beauty. But perhaps my biggest surprise was that I saw hardly any eyeshadows I own listed as dupes; I am thunderstruck over that! 5th Ave., Bronx and Marina are incredibly lovely shades!
Yet, I will likely pass only because I have too many neutrals to use up. Idk yet?
It’s definitely dupable – I feel like it is going to be best for someone who likes these types of shades and likes having them in a single palette, but with a few neutral palettes and perhaps a colorful one or two, you would likely have some overlap!
This is exactly why I bought it! And I have all the UD Nakeds, around 20 ABH singles, a great MAC 16 pan neutral, 4 Vice Palettes, etc, etc. But to me, it’s really perfect. After receiving, I ordered a backup. With my collection, I could never buy another palette for 40 years and still have enough. But I’m on my 3rd Naked one and this one was so perfect for me…every color. So I bought a backup.
I personally don’t think Naked 1 was too bronzey. But this one is so perfect for me. I love the olive toned Bronx too. By dream palette by UD would be a copper/olive Naked.
This, with the Take me to Tandego, Champagne Pop, and theBalm plum blush, will minimize what I usually pack when I travel.
Great score, makes me want it!
Awesome!
I posted this in the preview thread about the brow bone highlighting issue. My take not meshed with Christine’s review….
I got busy having fun swatching and matching to Christine’s photos what I think can work as brow bone highlighters in this palette.
The two that I think work are 5th Avenue and Marina. Yes, what I swatched matches Christine’s pix. Yet, using a light hand, they apply with a translucence that works as a highlighter for me. 5th Avenue is champagne with gold tone and Marina is a champagne with rose tone. The pigment is nuts on these, so you can go full on lid coverage, or use lightly to highlight. (I am going to try them on the cheekbones next.)
If you want a more white highlighter, or a matte, you will not find that in here. That’s for sure.
One would think that someone like Mario would not leave such a hole in his palette as to not have highlight tones, but maybe that’s too much credit? I dunno. I think two things make the difference here. As Christine said, skin tone (I’m light/medium with a bit of a yellow undertone). Second is application depth. If you pack it on, it will be intense. A light hand and the colors’ translucence can make the difference here.
I know that some days I may still reach for Shroom instead of this with shimmer, but that doesn’t bother me personally. I do it without thinking.
My take “now meshed,” not “not meshed.” I’m the worst with typos
The no brow bone shade doesn’t bother me either, Linda, because I would rather it work for more people (because inevitably, brow bone = light beige or worse, almost white, which isn’t going to highlight for everyone), but I know it can be an issue for others who want an all-in-one palette. I’ve encountered this with palettes to the point where I actually always use a single for my brow bone when I travel, because then I can have the one that matches me best!
I don’t know, for some reason I’m just not excited about it. I admit the swatches look amazing but it just looks like a lot of shades that are brown or not far off from brown. I suppose if you’re a neutral lover this would be great but I need my color! 🙂
They’re all dupable – we have seen the colors before 🙂 I don’t think we have seen this combination specifically all the time, but individually, yes, absolutely.
I just received this palette, and the colors are beautiful!
Yay!
I do want this, I can’t help it. There are only a couple of shades I wouldn’t use, and I don’t have any dupes for the ones I like most. Quality is very good throughout. On the other hand — cost. So I’ll have to see what the makeup gods want from me: if I spot in it in stores, it’s mine; if not, I’ll be saving my pennies for another item on my wish list.
The quality is great, and even if the shade range isn’t groundbreaking, I’m always happy to see a high quality palette!
As I wrote yesterday– I purchased one and gifted one. I am looking at my makeup drawer right now and seeing 3 large eye pallettes from Mark Jacobs, Laura Mercier, and now ABH and anniversary BB. gifting a few of my — still no regrets. I am confident that I will never ever run out of shadow. In order to use it, I will have to apply daily until I am 80 and beyond.
Enjoy it, Pamyla! 🙂 It’s a nice one!
Thank you so much for detailing the looks you created from the palette!!
No problem!
The price hike is pretty annoying, and it’s one of the reasons I won’t be buying this. Although all the shadows do perform beautifully, it’s basically yet another shimmery neutral palette with the addition of 2 muted pops: Claudia and Bronx. And Bronx is indeed a gorgeous olive green that almost makes me want this. But as I expected based on swatches, Claudia is the worst-performing shade in this palette. 🙁 It looks like such a lovely denim blue in the pan, but looks super muddy in every swatch I’ve seen thus far.
I totally understand, JC! I almost didn’t recommend it purely because of the price hike. I found it looked bluer as I blended it out – like in look I posted, it came out bluer than I thought it would be, based on the swatch alone!
I’m glad it scored well, it’s going to sell out quickly I’m sure.
Always good to see a quality palette!
This is a glorious palette for those who love these earthy autumn tones. None of these shades are original, but they are all put together in one palette. It does remind me of the bareMinerals Soft and Smoky and The Rare Find in its shade range. The ratings are pretty solid for this palette too.
Beautiful eye looks Christine.
Thank you, Genevieve!
I’m glad it’s great quality, but it’s all pretty dupeable and a pass for me. Plus the packaging is dreadful for $60.00, let alone $20.00. It doesn’t look like it will stand up one domestic, let alone a transatlantic flight!
It is $45, unless maybe you’re speaking to me in Canadian dollars – I double checked to make sure I didn’t write the price wrong, though.
I don’t think there will be any issues traveling with it – the palette is sturdy, and thicker cardboard travels exceptionally well as the cardboard acts as a bit of a shock absorber (vs. plastic), in my experience!
Christine, it’s $59 in Canada and with taxes added (varies from province to province) that puts it at well over $60. Any wonder you hear us gnashing our teeth?
60CAD=45USD at the moment, they’re not 1:1 equivalent, however.
I agree, this should travel just fine. It’s cardboard, true – but it’s dense and sturdy. It feels like it could take a pretty good fall without damaging the shadow.
the reason for the price hike vs the amrezy palettes and other collabs is because this palette is made in the USA. the others are made in China. ive swatched her other palettes and aside from modern ren palette, her other palettes don’t have the best shadow quality. however, this Mario palette is definitely good quality. I could tell from first swatch how much better it was than the other palettes she has put out
i don’t think that Self Made was made in China, as I bought it and don’t buy m/u made in China, period. I checked the label on the back. (I gave it to my sister so i don’t have it here).
Thank you so much for a wonderful review! I feel like I can find some of these shades from my Morphe 35O palette. Yes, it is not as buttery as the ABH eye shadows but with the right primer it gives the same pay off.
I am still waiting for the MR to get in stock 🙂 xo
Happy to share, April! Glad you are able to recreate it with your Morphe palette!
So proud of ABH for their fantastic palette releases this year!
Yay!
I have MUFE dupes for NYC, Kim and Isabel, with Muse and Bronx looking pretty similar to a couple of other MUFE shadows that I own(which is the main reason why I haven’t ordered this palette, yet). All of the colors are perfect for me, but am wondering if I should just continue to add to my MUFE collection(27, so far and 1 palette), as I LOVE those eye shadows. Decisions, decisions!
Have you tried any ABH eyeshadows before, Mary D? If you LOVE Make Up For Ever ones, you might be better off staying the course!
Never tried ABH, but happened to be in Ulta yesterday and decided to swatch Modern Renaissance(with disposable sponge applicators). I was shocked at how powdery they were and the lighter colors just looked ashy on my skin(MAC NC45/NW 43). So, yeah…I may just stay with MUFE shadows! Thanks, Christine!
This was a palette I was heavily considering but the price is a bit of a deal breaker whenever it is a neutral palette. Even whenever the Modern Renaissance released, I was surprised of the price hike ($35 –> 42) from the Self Made palette, a palette of similar size. I asked Norvina (Claudia, Anastasia’s daughter) about it on her IG and she claims a change in the formula is to blame for the price hike. I even double checked between the single eyeshadow and past palette formulas and the ingredients are slightly different.
The price difference between Self-Made and Modern Renaissance did not bother me, as it’s within range of what it would be for the larger palette overall, I think. If you just take the $35/12 and then take the per-shade price against the 14 in Modern Renaissance, it would be $40.83. I would expect a +$1-2 over the year for inflation/general price increases (that most brands do), so $42 was more in line with expectations to me.
I got mine yesterday and I love it but I 100% agree with the swap of a paler version of m muse and a deep plum for one of the golds…maybe one of the mattes could’ve been much lighter for brow bone.
There just seems to be a bit of repetitiveness… to the point where you could easily take one out and get something more different in while still keeping in the theme!
Awesome! I ordered it a few days ago when I saw a WG video talking about it; before that I really wasn’t interested. This review of yours reinforces that it was a sound decision. I have a lot of neutral and warm palettes, but a lot of them I’m giving or have given away because I’ve realized the shadows themselves are problematic and I want shadows now for the quality, not just the color. Happy my impulse buy wasn’t a bad one. Thanks again for getting this review up so fast!
Hope you enjoy yours when you get it, Nicole!
Christine, as always thank you for your honest reviews. This looks like a great fall everyday palette. Like you I was stunned at the price point. I was like wait a minute. I get more product in my Renaissance Palette for less $$. I hope it’s not an indication of rising prices. ?
Me, too, Indira! I hope it’s not a trend.
Way too warm for me, but I think this would look beautiful on deeper skin tones. Lovely fall colors.
I think it will, too!
Thank you! I wAnted to see your review before buying but now I think I’m going to skip it. I’m light-skinned and I think these shadows would be way too warm and dark for me.
No problem, Lola! 🙂
I got this yesterday at Sephora. They didn’t have them displayed yet, but the young girl in front of me had on, so I asked and they had them in the back still. I really like it. Warmer than normal for me, but I still like it.
Glad you are liking it so far, Shari!
Lovely, but glad I have dupes for the shades I like, except must score mufe teak. And eventually MR. I can see myself making a mess with this one. The only palette that leans brown or yellow that I can work is Monarch, and that only by strategic underblending.
Teak is a great shade from MUFE! Lovely finish.
Even though this is really pretty and I would love to own it, I refuse to buy it because Sephora set the price in Denmark to be 70 dollars.
Bummer! 🙁
I was wondering where you got the .025oz per shadow? My palette says .02oz.
Convert grams to ounces 🙂
Oh yes, yes, yeeeeeeeees! Bumping this right to the top of my wish list now!
Yay!
Thank you for the wonderfully comprehensive review and the inspiring eye looks! I love the palette comparison tool – first time I’ve used it. I have two other palettes that appear to have similarities, but have not been reviewed here. The Morphe 12S palette may have some comparable shimmer shades, though it has no mattes. The Violet Voss x Laura Lee is a warm-leaning palette with a mix of mattes and shimmers. That said, and even though I have the MR palette with four dupe shades, I’m considering adding this one to my collection for the quality and convenience of having the included shades all together. And, what can I say, I’m a junkie!
I could see Laura Lee definitely getting you some similar shades to this!
Let us know if you end up getting this palette, Kim!
thank you for addressing the price hike. i actually regret not buyin abh palettes when they weren’t in their 30s. i bought this, i don’t have the MR palette, i think i’ll buy that in the 20% off sale, maybe. i really miss es palettes in the 30s price range. but i also have an easier time not buying es palettes now cos i have so much makeup. so that’s good at least.
Of course! It was so obvious 🙁
Even though many of these shades are very pretty, a palette full of warm neutrals is just not for me. Plus of course one of my favorite shades (Claudia) is the worst-performing. Plus it would never work as a stand-alone palette for me; I need a light demi-matte, matte or slightly satiny shade. Lula would make a nice hood/crease/transition shade for me, though, which is something that a lot of palettes are missing. Love Bronx. Love Muse, too, although it might be too red for use next to my eyes. Well, at least I have a dupe for Bronx, MUFE D320 Golden Khaki. I could easily talk myself into this one because it’s so pretty and the quality’s good, but I know I would end up not using it that much…
Glad you have some dupes for the shades that appealed to you the most, Fran!
Thank you very much for this review. I had to have it!
My pleasure, Judi!
I watched a few video reviews on it, and Tarababyz did a thorough video review and the two of you combined always immensely help my sight-unseen decisions. 🙂 Went ahead and ordered this one, the color selection is just beautiful and I know I love the ABH formula. It’s not an all-inclusive palette and that’s a bummer, but I usually supplement my palettes with lighter shades from elsewhere anyways.
I hope you love it, Ashleigh! 😀
I was waiting for you to review this one! I’m on the fence between the Lorac Mega Pro 3 and the ABH Mario Palette, which one would you recommend?
I’m running out of time, they will be sold out any minute now?
That’s tough! Is there a formula you like more from past trials? I find ABH to work a bit better for me overall (without primer).
I’m going to skip this. I like it a lot, but I have dupes for a lot of the colours. I am thinking of getting the MR palette though, I think I’d have more fun with it. And then there are the Matte Metallic from Kat Von D coming soon, I hope, and UD’s huge colourful palette. I guess I feel more into colours than nudes, and that after buing two drugstore nude palettes just the other day. 🙂
Sounds like a good move, Helene! The Modern Renaissance is a fun one but still versatile.
Your stunning looks really tempt me! I’ll might buy it if they realise it in Europe (the Moonchild just hit the shelves). But first I’ll check the MUFE dupe you indicate. Might have a few in my stash or on my wish list.
I love my MUFE and viseart shadows. Never tried ABH… I hope I won’t be disappointed if I gave on this one!
I also don’t care much about the absence of a brow highlight. I rather have one which perfectly suits my skin tone and have it as a single because the pans in palettes are often too small for my taste (for that kind of shade) !
It’s cool to hear that others are like me and have a brow bone single, lol! I find it easier, even for travel – always the right shade!
It’s killing me now more than ever that I ordered this from Ulta for the 3x bonus points that convert to $ instead of Sephora for the it will be here in 2 days rather than the weeks it takes the donkey they employ to walk it’s way to my local shipping hub. I want it nooooooow :::annoying whine::: Even though these are neutrals the finishes, tones and just overall curation are actually different than pretty much anything I can think of off the top of my head especially when you factor in the quality. I love pigment! I don’t have time to build AND blend! Lol
Hopefully you get yours soon, Bonnie 🙂 The only reason I got mine reasonably quickly from Ulta was I paid for overnight, lol!
Glad to see this palette did well! I don’t have any Anastasia shadows or palettes, but their recent releases have made me want to try them sometime.
Hopefully you can swatch their eyeshadows sometime to see if you like the formula, Brittany!
I’m so surprised to see the photos and swatches of this palette! They look so different than the promo images they released for this palette, which looked so cool toned. It seemed to make sense that they might put out a cooler toned palette after releasing the incredibly warm toned Modern Renaissance. You would think they would make more of an effort to ensure the promotional imagery accurately represents the colors within the palette, at least come close. I was so looking forward to this, but now I think I am going to pass, even though it scored so well and I like the Anastasia formula. I have too many dupes and can’t justify another warm toned mainly neutrals palette, especially with that price increase…
It really is a lot warmer than it looked in the promo photos!
I love this palette – I had the pleasure of picking it up in Sephora while I was visiting NYC a few weeks ago. I couldn’t believe that I got my hands on it (I’m from England and so it probably wouldn’t launch here until 2017) I was later told by a friend it was put out early by mistake, so I’m pretty happy I picked it up (for a minute I even deliberated whether I actually need it… pfft I soon snapped out of it!).
The colours (although some very similar) are beautifully pigmented and delightful to blend. I have never used ABH eye shadows before (like I said, I live in the UK so we don’t even have singles here, just occasionally palettes which sell out instantly) and I was delighted with the pay off, even though they are a little powdery just use a light hand.
For me, it is definitely must.
So glad you were able to get a palette, Ellie!
I was going to skip this, but I definitely need it. Such gorgeous colors!
Enjoy, Lupe!
This looks like a nice palette, but the only shade I’m really in love with is Bronx… So I just got the Inglot dupe. 😛 Can I ask why you recommend this palette Christine?
The quality of the palette is good, and the shades work well together.
Gotcha, thanks 🙂
Ugh, now I want to get this *cries*
Aww!
Can’t wait to get home and play with this!
Yayy!!
Hi! Does anyone know why ABH palettes including this one has a shelf life of only 6 months? Surely, people are not going to repurchase every 6 months. I don’t own any ABH palettes for this reason. How long does any other eyeshadow palette last for?
I don’t really keep track of things like that personally, so I’m not sure!
Dry products generally are safe to use for *far* longer than 6 months. Think of people who collect things like Meteorites & hold onto them for 10+ years & still use them.
Just use common sense & forget about those ridiculous labels. They’re a great way for companies to dupe women into buying more product that they don’t need. Sadly, common sense seems to be something many people are short on. Some of the things I read online in relation to this topic – expiring products – are absolutely laughable. People should be far more concerned with the actual ingredients in their cosmetics because that’s something which can seriously affect your health. Keeping an eye shadow palette longer than the labeled ‘6 months’, not so much. Unless a person is flicking their boogers into their palette or using dirty brushes/fingers habitually, this isn’t even an issue.
Great review and I love the warmth of this palette! Christine I’m conflicted between buying this one or the Lorac Mega Pro palette 3.. Whichever one I end buying would be my first neutral palette (and most likely my last lol).. And I haven’t tried either formula.. Which one would you recommend to someone as an introduction to the world of neutral eyeshadows? 🙂
What’s your coloring like, Lulu? In general, if you are medium to dark, the Mario palette is probably going to work better as a workhorse neutral palette.
Thanks for the quick reply! My coloring is light to medium (definitely closer to medium but not tanned) with yellow undertones.. I love the mario palette but it seems to me that some of the shadows are too similar.. The lorac one offers more shades but the amount we’re getting in each shadow isn’t that amazing at all.. I’m worried I’m going to somehow convincee myself to buy both! Lol
I think you are going to like the Mario one better 🙂
I ordered the mario palette! Cant wait to get it 🙂
I had NO intention of getting this palette but my makeup artist for my wedding used this and told me I HAD to get it! OMG, she was so right! It’s BEAUTIFUL! I didn’t think the colors would work on my dark complexion but they are warm (which I love), soft but not powdery and very pigmented! I have been using it every single day since I purchased it over the weekend. Absolutely LOVE this palette. It’s a must have if you’re into warm toned colors.
Happy to hear this is working well for you, Jocelyn!! It is good to hear that it is suitable on darker skin tones, too!
i picked this up knowing i may be returning it. I am very fair skinned and was worried it would be too dark/warm for me. To be honest it kinda is, I have to use it with lighter shadows to make it work. With saying that you will have to pry it out of my cold dead hand. I have loved every look I have created with it. The shadows blend netter than most I have tried. I was very pleasantly surprised by this one 🙂
Even though you have to add a few shades to it, at least it works really well when you do! 🙂
Dupable or not, I’ve found that I love palettes like this for travel. Saves me so much time – and space/weight – deciding what to take. Usually it’s one matte palette & one shimmer/pearl palette that goes with me, or a mixed palette of both. With this one, I’d just need to take one or two highlighting shades & my eyeshadow bases would be covered for any out-of-town trips. For that reason alone, and the fact that it’s got really nice pigmentation, I think I’ll try to pick this up. Very nice shades for fall as well.
I can see this being a real workhorse for travel, as long as you have a go-to highlighter on the side!
Wow I am glad I stumbled upon your review! I was really tempted to buy this palette as I heard good things about it but mever knew it had so many warmer/deeper colours. Correct me If I am wrong since I am an eyeshadow newbie, but I feel that warmer colours look really wrong/muddy on me, as I have cooler undertones? Guess I’ll pass this up. Considering that I do not have much eyeshadows, can anyone recommend me a nice starter eyeshadow palette? 😀
You can definitely wear warmer tones if you are cooler (and vice versa), but some may be more or less flattering on you vs. someone with the same undertones as the product – but it can really depend on what else you pair it with! 🙂
If you want something cooler, maybe Urban Decay Naked3! Or LORAC Pro.
I am so going to buy this when we go on vacation to the USA next month. I have the Modern Renaissance and absolutely love that one!
Yay!
I “broke down” and got this palette yesterday. You’ve no idea how “back and forth” I went with it because I have so many shadows that are dupes for the shades I like best. I’ve only “played” with the palette twice but, so far, I am really surprised by how much I like it. The shadow textures of those I’ve tried have been typical of the best of ABH shadows and I’ve experienced very little fallout and that was easy to brush away cleanly. I still lament the lack of a true highlight/inner corner shade – you’d think a makeup artist would ensure there would be one shadow that would work for a very light brow highlight. Of the shadows I’ve tried so far, the one really pleasant surprise was Violeta. It looks like such a warm brown in the pan but when I apply it, it’s a wonderfully cool, dark brown along the lines of ABH Smoke. And I LOVE Marina (who is this Marina? Who is Violeta? I am so out of the loop “celeb-wise”). So I won’t be returning this and I’m actually really glad I got it. I even like the brush…the denser, shorter side is really good.
It actually strikes me as a very you palette – warmer, shimmery but not over the top, earthy. I’m so glad you ARE loving it 🙂
I love that blue/teal liner you used on your lower lash line Christine. Can you please let me know what you used?
There is a link that says “Look Breakdown” right next to the photo which gives a breakdown of what was used where.
Hi Christine,
Have you tried the Artist of makeup palette by Zukreat? Apparently that’s amazing but I didn’t want to splurge 199 Pounds for i so I was wondering if you could do a review on it before i purchase?
No, sorry, I haven’t heard of that.
I’ve been using this palette for weeks and i didn’t think I would like it as much as I do. The colors are dupable but there is something in this formulation that makes them ridiculously easy to use. I thought I would need a different transition shade but I find that I actually don’t. It does need a matte brow bone highlight but other than that this is perfection for me. I reach for this palette more than ABH Modern Renaissance.
How similar would you say NYC and Muse are? I got the palette, and I legit can’t tell the two apart… I don’t know if I got a fluke palette with two Muse shades, or if they are reaaaaaaally similar. Thanks!
They are similar but not the same on me? Muse is warmer, redder, lighter, and more shimmery. NYC is darker, browner, more muted, and less shimmery.

I cant stand cardboard packaging at this price point. Its a rip off who ever happens to have their name on the front of it. The redeeming feature is, its not a neutral palette, dont we all have enough of those and plenty of brow bone highlights too. How many of us travel with just one palette? If I do travel it probably wont be this palette. I also think if it wasnt going to be a cool toned neutral palette then it was going to be this, which appeals to medium to dark skin tones and we are usually the ones who get left out, so fair skinned lovelies perhaps you wouldn’t mind us having a palette designed around us for a change xx So my only gripe is the packaging, for the same price if i had a nice palette id be over the moon.
How do I know if one I bought off eBay is the real deal ? Could they be fake I purchased two
Yes, they could be fake. If the seller has a strong reputation of providing legitimate products, you might be okay, but it can be hard to tell without seeing a real one and a fake one in person if they did a good job copying it.
It’s funny because this is exactly what I thought when I saw this palette. I got the self made last year and that palette has 14 shadows in it for $35 while this palette is $10 more at $45 for only 12 shadows. Like wtf is up with that? That’s why I didn’t get this palette. That and the fact that everyone’s raving about it hopping on the bandwagon when it just seems very bland. Idk I want more originality when it comes to makeup gurus or whatever. They’re always just following the trend of what others are saying and doing.
Yes and the artist palette was $30 for 12 shadows and I believe all the prior palettes were 30 too. If sucks bc there palettes were one of the more affordable ones to get for me but now I don’t think I will be purchasing them as much either. I also didn’t feel the need to get this palette.
