Modern Renaissance

Anastasia Modern Renaissance Eyeshadow Palette ($42.00 for 0.28 oz.) includes 14 eyeshadows that come in a mix of warmer neutrals and pops of pink/red. For a mostly matte palette, it actually applied quite well to bare skin, and I didn’t have issues blending out the majority of the shades. I was surprised, because a lot of the new matte eyeshadows in the palette feel much softer and smoother compared to most of Anastasia’s matte eyeshadow range that I’ve tried–they felt more like LORAC’s formula–but they still adhered exceptionally well to bare skin without sheering out or becoming patchy. The majority of the shades were pigmented and wore for seven to eight hours. As a note, it is packaged with a velvety exterior (like the original Urban Decay Naked palette), not the standard cardboard.

Tempera

Tempera is a light beige with warm, peachy tones and a satiny sheen. It was incredibly soft and silky with great color payoff that applied well without sheering out too easily. This shade wore well for eight hours.

Formula Overview

$12.00/0.06 oz. - $200.00 Per Ounce

Anastasia Eyeshadow is supposed to be a “finely-milled, highly-pigmented” powder eyeshadow. There are several different finishes, and the performance can be better or worse depending on the finish, though it also ranges from shade to shade. On average, the formula is semi-opaque to opaque, lightly dusty to buttery, wears seven to nine hours, and is fairly blendable. The Metallic and Titanium finishes seem to be the best-performing to me, but there are some really standout mattes and shimmers as well. I have not tried the sparkle, satin, or velvet finishes as extensively as the other finishes, personally.

Golden Ochre

Golden Ochre is a muted, medium-dark yellow with strong, olive tones and a mostly matte finish. The texture was very soft and blendable, though it was a smidgen dusty. It had good pigmentation that applied well and blended out easily. It lasted for eight hours before fading on me.

Vermeer

Vermeer is a bright, light peachy with warm undertones and a frosted sheen. The consistency was extremely smooth, finely-milled, and soft, which resulted in some excess product getting kicked up in the pan, but I found it to apply well and stay in place, rather than sheering out (which is what I expected it to do)–it seemed like it almost “melted” in place. It didn’t emphasize dryness or texture, which is also something that typically occurs for me with this type of texture. The color payoff was mostly opaque, while the color itself lasted for eight hours before creasing.

Buon Fresco

Buon Fresco is a muted, medium purple-mauve with a matte finish. I just reviewed this last week in single form (so this shade is also available individually should the palette not appeal to you), and the palette version is consistent. The texture was a little powdery despite still having good pigmentation and an ability to adhere to bare skin. It started to fade after seven and a half hours.

Antique Bronze is a slightly muted, dark brown with warm, reddish undertones and a pearly sheen. Love Letter

Love Letter is a muted, dark berry with subtle, cool undertones and a mostly matte finish. It had good pigmentation, though not fully opaque in one go, that was buildable on the lid. More importantly, it actually blended out fairly easily on even bare skin (and even better over a primer, of course) and didn’t become uneven or turn patchy. The texture was not quite as finely-milled compared to some of the other, lighter matte shades in the palette. This shade wore well for eight hours on me.

Burnt Orange

Burnt Orange is a slightly muted, medium orange-brown with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had good pigmentation with a soft, smooth, very lightly dusty consistency that was more like the texture I expect with Anastasia’s more neutral-hued mattes, but it wasn’t quite as silky as other shades in the palette (not in a good/bad way, just something I noticed). This shade is also available individually.

Venetian Red

Venetian Red is a medium-dark red with subtle, warmer undertones and a mostly matte finish. This one was the driest shade in the palette, though it wasn’t firm or stiff in the pan, but it kicked up excess product and tended to have a subtle grittiness to it (this does seem to be present in a lot of red shades, particularly when they’re more matte). It had semi-opaque, buildable pigmentation that blended out nicely (that was a surprise!). The color started to fade after seven and a half hours.

Christine, how many oz/gr is each eyeshadow in this palette compared to old versions of ABH palettes like the self made one? Claudia said that this one had bigger pans and therefore the price increase.

Asche Avatar

Sigh….this is an easy pass. I don’t get on well with such warm colours. I know I’ll look like I’ve got an eye infection if I were to use these. It’s a shame though, I’d love to try an ABH palette someday.

Mariella Avatar

I’m the same as you, Asche – those orange and red tones are deadly for me. I can managed to use some of the shades in KvD’s Monarch and Shade+Light palettes but I have to use them judiciously and, in truth, I mostly use them just because they’re in there and I feel I should, to justify having paid for them. I do like what Lauren said. though – that if this palette is successful, they’ll release a cool toned one (though that seems like upside down thinking, since people who prefer cool tones won’t be buying this palette so sales won’t be a true representation of how a cooler toned palette would perform, sales-wise).

Asche Avatar

I hope they do release a cool-tones palette! But I agree with what you said about the upside-down thinking.
I avoided the Monarch and Shade+Light palettes because of their warmth. I had a similar issue with the Naked3. It’s extremely pink and I should have known better than to buy it. I definitely have to force myself to use it in order to justify the cost to myself.

Lily Avatar

Norvina said that they decided to make a warm palette just because it’s in their statistics of most popular (sold) eyeshadow colors ever so that’s why they went with the warm toned one first of all. If it would be the other way around I would guess that they would have made a cool one first.

Lisa Avatar

Ugghh I’m trying to decide if I need this or not. Those reds and berries keep calling to me like “you need me you need me”.

Alycia Avatar

Yass! I would much rather get this than the VV HG palette or the Morphe equivalent…I also get a lot of use out of the included brush (I have 2 from past ABH palette purchases) and find they’re good for throwing in a travel makeup bag because I don’t feel like I have to be super careful with them and they get the job done nicely for me 🙂

fancie Avatar

Anastasia is really stepping up her game! I own two of her older palettes and I really liked the quality and pigmentation of her shadows but hated the cardboard packaging. I’m so happy she scrapped it and went for something a little better. I’m also really digging the color scheme for this palette. I’m pretty sure I have dupes for most of them but it still seems super convenient to have all of my favorite shades in one palette. I just may end up getting it one day. It’s so pretty!

J Avatar

You’re tearing me apart, Anastasia!

I really only enjoy wearing cooler colors, but I love pinks. I thought it would be an easy pass since, at first glance, Love Letter looks like a lot of bright pink shadows I have. But it’s not like them at all. And the dupe list is small and lacking in cruelty free options.
Doesn’t help either that so many of the other colors are just so beautiful. Venetian Red is calling to me as well and it looks like it might work well enough on me.
If only Love Letter could be released as a single. Because I adore the brighter colors in this palette, but the neutrals don’t do anything for me.

Claire L Avatar

Haha, J, I feel exactly the same! It’s a lovely palette, I’m trying not to want it! It puts me in mind though of the Too Faced Chocolate Bon bons which I already have so I’m trying to hold off on this!

Sonia Avatar

Hi Christine,

A while back you posted swatches of the 28 COLOR EYESHADOW PALETTE
by BH COSMETICS but you did not review it. Will you be reviewing it?

Christine Avatar

Hi Sonia!

In the future, if you could direct off-topic comments to either the relevant post (the BH Foil Eyeshadow Palette sneak peek) or send me an email via our contact form, I would very much appreciate that! These posts live on forever so we try to keep the comments related to the post for those who read in a month or six months from now 🙂

I am not currently ready to review that palette so that is why there’s no review yet! Just because there is not one yet doesn’t mean I won’t, only that for various reasons, like I haven’t finished testing it, there might be a lot of other, higher priority items to review, etc. 🙂 I have specifically been putting up sneak peeks when photos are ready vs. when I am ready to review, because I am not always able to review things in a timely manner (I know, I’m failing you here!).

Sonia Avatar

Hey, no worries! I didn’t mean to derail the comment thread here and I could not find the sneak peek through your search. It brings me to the product’s page with a drop down list of all shades in the palette. There is no room for comments there.

And it did not occur to me that I should email you because honestly I thought you wouldn’t bother replying since you must be getting 10 k+ each day. Sorry I was being presumptious! I certainly appreciate your thoughtful reply to my question thank you! ?

Sonia Avatar

I was using the Chrome browser on my Ipad. You are right. I just tried searching through your website for the BH palette and the sneak peek is the first hit.

CatG Avatar

Swatches look great for the most part and I always wear primer so it will perform well on me I think. I think this was a smartly designed palette, a lot of these colors are very sought after right now.

Nima Avatar

This is a lovely palette and the colors are exactly what looks best on me…but I have so many palettes already. So I decided that I’d only get it if you gave it a “B” grade or higher. Hooray for your review! I’ve already requested an email reminder from Sephora to let me know when this will be in stock.

Stephanie Avatar

I’ve been lusting after this palette ever since I found out about its existence. These shades are right up my alley!

But seriously, ABH, what gave you the idea that fuzzy pink “velvet” packaging is even remotely acceptable? It was horrible when IT Cosmetics did it and it’s horrible now!

Ginny Avatar

Makes me want to try pairing some pinks and reds this weekend. When I scrolled to your eye look I was like YESSSthat’swhatI’mtalkinabout. I actually might pick up Buon Fresco as a single, thanks for the tip 🙂

Elyse Avatar

YES! So many mattes! I have hooded Saami eyes and shimmer and shine just ends up moving all around to the wrong part of the lid. And I loooove these colors too! This broke gal is gonna save up!

Sarah S. Avatar

Do my eyes deceive me? The PAO date is 6 months??? After I got a nasty eye infection one time I adhere strictly to PAO… I’ve never seen a palette with only 6 months before!

Nancy T Avatar

YES!!! Hardly any extreme if much overlap with what I already own! Except MAC Brown Script and Lorac Taupe, so this seems to be a “to get” palette for me. Between this, TF Honeymoon and UD Liquid lipstick, I’m gonna be doing some SERIOUS 90’s channeling!!! LoL

(P. S.: that fabulous eye look of yours sold me too! Just as the Chanel Empreinte du Desert did, *giggles*!)

I already have burnt orange in a single, and I don’t know how much I’d use love letter, but I absolutely LOVE the all the other shades. It’s a beautiful palette! Happy it’s permanent so I don’t feel compelled to buy just yet. 🙂

Nath Avatar

I think it is a very nice palette but I am more attracted to cool toned colors, however, I will still keep it on my list and I’ll make a decision when I see it in person. Thank you Christine! 🙂

This is such a pretty palette. I usually don’t like large palettes because I don’t use all the eye shades but I really love all the colors. Your eye look is very pretty.

They really did a great job coordinating the colors in this palette. They didn’t throw in anything to make it more “universally appealing”, they made a commitment to a theme and pulled it off beautifully. And… there’s no BLACK in the palette! YAY! =)

Even though I have dupes for almost every color, I’m still going to purchase this. Because ABH shadows always perform so well for me, along with the convenience of having so many shades I adore, and having ALL the shades I need to complete a look, in one palette, this a must-have for me! 😀

This is so lovely, and it really goes well with my recent (last few days) obsession with Tutor portraiture! I especially like how many of the colors are named after actual renaissance era pigments. The ones that are still in use (like umber and raw sienna) are even pretty true to color (realgar is a derivative of arsenic so strangely has fallen out of use). If it had yellow ochre (lovely muddy yellow-brown with an almost greenish cast – a bit darker and considerably more yellow than ‘warm ochre’), I’m absolutely positive I wouldn’t be able to resist, but that’s probably a good thing because, as much as I love it, I definitely don’t need it!

Also, this is the first Anastasia palette that I can recall that isn’t made in China!

All in all, it’s very existence makes me happy wether or not I’m going to end up owning it. Thank you so much for reviewing it and providing these lovely, inspirational pictures!

Most of her palettes are made in PRC (China). They are each labeled on the back (MADE IN …) and you can usually read which it is off of Christina’s photo of the ingredients.

The pan photos and your looks are fab…always like a hit of Good Mood. This is just the ticket for those who like reds and oranges with some neutral tie-ins. It seems a bit daring with so many red based shades. Around the eye? My mum would disapprove! One small caveat to me is that the shades are not particularly true to pan, when you see the swatch in the same frame as the pan. But that is hardly a deal breaker. This is a refreshing change. Some of this season’s l/s and this palette are definitely turning the concept of ‘summer colors’ on its head. Good! (Says the non coral, non pink person)

I find that to be true with some formulas, particularly thinner consistencies as well as lipsticks – I couldn’t tell you why. Occasionally one will differ enough that I’ll take the lipstick and apply it, hold up the bullet against the lips, and it STILL has a drastic difference!

Love these colors, but I have so many dupes. The only one I think I would really love to have and don’t have a dupe for is Love Letter (and possible Venetian Red, though I’m feeling like I do have a dupe for that, but I can’t seem to find it) and OF COURSE there aren’t any good dupes for it. [sigh]

I believe I won’t be able to resist. I don’t go for palettes ever, for the likelihood of waste and also what if I fall in love and it’s LE or not available as a single. But, this one could be a good decision for the money; some are fun colors for experimentation, like Venetian Red, and I think almost every color will work for me. Great fun. Thanks for reviewing it.

I wanted a good-quality “apple and/or pumpkin” shades palette for fall, and it’s looking like this one is IT! Usually I go for cooler shades but am trying to branch out more.

Holly Avatar

These colors are right up my alley. I can’t wait to get this palette. Will definitely be a good one for me for Fall and Winter. This one is for sure going on my list.

Genevieve Avatar

Personally, these warm orangey -red tones aren’t for me and somehow I think that a few colours are duplicated in this palette – albeit with different finishes. But for those who love and can wear these colours it would be a big hit.
Again, that Sephora Good Mood eyeliner really sets off your eye look beautifully Christine.

I’m soo getting this when it comes in Europe through retailers 😀 i love the theme and love there is no black (I rarely use it and have a ton from other palettes), Thanks for the review I always find them extremely helpfull before buying a product.

It actually got launched by most of the online retailers shipping to europe on the 15th, june. I got it through beautybay because it was the cheapest (approx 40 gbp) plus free shipping :). I am super happy with the purchase I didn’t have that many orange or bright pinks in my collections , i mostly had neutrals . hopefully this will make me think outside the box.

Oh my, I’m loving this! I haven’t bought any eye palettes since last year (nothing’s caught my eye), but I think I’m gonna cave in with this one. Those rusty and rosy shades are my jam and they’ll fill some holes on my collection! Looks like a great opportunity to try ABH’s formula.

Jessika Avatar

I’m a makeup hoarder but this palette is so basic to me! I’m am not seeing what the big deal is. The Self Made and Artist palette is better than this, IN MY OPINION. Meh. I’ll pass.

minacoleta Avatar

ohhhhhh MAN I want this pallet, from the moment I saw it I wanted it! I usually don’t go for pallets, because I find that they only have a couple of shades I like or are too similar to something else I own for the price, but this one…. i already own the Naked2 and Naked Smokey and I don’t think that this pallet is anything like either of those!

After reading the comments, I started to wonder weather cool or warmed toned shades look best on my eyes, because I’ve never actually noticed! I believe I have cool toned skin, and I’m very pale, but these oranges and reds would bring out my blue eyes like nobodys business, I think! And I wear glasses, so I feel like I can get away with some stuff maybe non glasses wearers wouldn’t be able to.

Thanks for the great swatches! Now I have to pinch my pennies for this pallet, haha.

I initially called this a “hard pass”, but something came over me & I bought it on a late night whim from Sephora. It arrived in almost less than 48hrs. (thank you Flash shipping!), & once I swatched it, I became obsessed.
I used to feel like really warm toned shadows made me look sick, but I now apply them differently than I used to, & have much better brushes, so I feel like they look better.
Speaking of brushes, the one in this palette is super scratchy (the blending end)! I’ve never used an ABH palette brush before, and I just wanted to try some of the shades out on my bare lids. The shadows are SUPER pigmented, you barely need any for decent color payoff, but I will never use that brush again lol
So yeah, I was initially against this palette, but it quickly became my current obsession!

So beautiful! I have so many palettes already…I need to finish those first I guess ): Plus this palette has a price increase of 30% where I live… Unacceptable for a palette made in the PRC in my opinion ): !

I can see Too Faced coming out with a similar palette called Sweet Strawberry 😛 I love some of the colors in this palette, but I know I’d hardly get much use out of all the red tones! Very pretty, but not practical for me.

By the way, you always come up with the most gorgeous eyeshadow combinations!

Tamara Avatar

I’m absolutely in love with this pallette!! When it first came out, I saw those red shades and was sure it wouldn’t work for me. Yesterday, I suddenly decided that I was in desperate need of it though. Now I have it and I’m really impressed the pigmentation and blendability. It’s so pretty!

Amanda Avatar

I already have the Manny MUA paletter and the Peanut Butter Palette which have similar shades, so I’m trying to talk myself out of buying this, but its so tempting. Warm tones look so pretty on me. I’ll sleep on it. lol

Maggie Avatar

I bought this palette recently and the colors are beautiful and exactly what I wanted, but tragically, even with primer they crease on me after only a short time 🙁 to be fair I have only really dabbled in the reds/oranges/pinks so maybe the more neutral shades won’t, also I have this problem semi-regularly. I usually use urban decay’s primer and my other shadows don’t crease nearly as quickly (could be because most of my eyeshadow is urban decay so maybe the primer is only good for UD shadows….) Anyway, I tried another primer with it and it still had this issue. What primer would you recommend, Christine? I want to love this palette because the colors look so great with my green eyes, ugh!!!

Connie Avatar

I fell in love at first sight with this palette colors! And when I finally decided to buy it, bam! sold out in Sephora and Ulta ? Thank God I found one in ABH website and now I’m using it (and loving it) everyday!

Connie Avatar

Hi Christine! I like Burnt Orange on the crease with some Tempera all over the lid and a little Realgar or Red Ochre to deepen the outer corners a bit. For a casual night out I like Buon Fresco on the crease with a wash of Antique Bronze on the lid and a bit of Cyprus Umber to intensify the outer corners and the lower lash line.
But my go to has been Golden Ochre on the crease with Primavera on the lid!! Also, I think Tempera is a lovely shade for the brow bone and Vermeer is great for the inner corners and both are perfect with any combo!
I’m still figuring out how to wear Venetian Red and Love Letter! both are gorgeous but I think I’ll need to get some YouTube inspiration ?

The truth is that this palette is completely amazing. This was my first ABH one and after that, I was on the hunt for the rest! Unfortunately, this is also their best palette. Definitely they upped their game from their previous ones. I bought Self-Made, Artist, Amrezy, Tamanna, Lavish and another one that I never remember, and the MR is absolutely amazing. They are pigmented, buttery, blendable, versatile; just plain amazing!

Thaisa Avatar

Hi Christine,

I am in love with this palette, specially because of the orangey tones.
I don’t know if I am ready to commit because it’s a little bit pricey and not avaible in my country.
Do you recomend any other/simmilar tones palette?

Thank you
