Sweet Little Vices

Urban Decay Sweet Little Vices 4-Piece Mini Vice Lipstick Set ($25.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a new, limited edition foursome that includes all new shades, and the twist on these is that each is scented and flavored differently from the regular Vice range.

As much as I love the Vice range, these four were a disappointment. Only one of the four applied decently, but the other three were misses based on how they sat on lips–not the most forgiving if you have anything but ultra-smooth lips. Keep in mind, I always exfoliate my lips prior to applying lip swatches, too.

The set contains 0.12 oz. of lipstick, whereas a full-sized Vice Lipstick retails for $19.00 and contains 0.11 oz. of product, so the set only contains $20.73 worth of lipstick. In my experience, Urban Decay sets usually have a higher value than the price, so this was a surprise!

California Honey

California Honey is a brighter, medium-dark gold with strong, warm orange undertones and flecks of gold sparkle and finer shimmer throughout. It had semi-sheer color payoff that applied somewhat evenly, but there wasn’t even dispersion of the sparkle/glitter, which resulted in the product clumping up in some places. There was a bit of product that sank into my deeper lip lines as well. The texture felt slightly textured, though not rough or painful to use, from the amount of sparkle in the product. It wore well for three hours and was lightly moisturizing while worn.

As a FYI, this shade was honey-scented and flavored.

Urban Decay Vice Lipstick ($17.00 for 0.11 oz.) is available in six finishes, which are primarily distinguished by level of sheen, shimmer content, and coverage. I didn't notice any scent or taste. Mega Mattes are the thinnest and have the most “cling” as they are drier and more matte (but most are semi-matte and not a totally flat matte) and can be drying, though they are longer-wearing.

Comfort Mattes are creamier, a little denser, with richer color payoff on average (they are the most pigmented out of the finishes), and have a satin finish that is fairly comfortable to wear, usually lightly hydrating, and longer-wearing.

Creams are usually softer and creamier, though not too soft (they don’t mush or break from the base easily), with some being tackier and stiffer in the tube until they warm up against the lips; they have good color payoff, are hydrating, and are comfortable to wear but have more typical wear (four to six hours–six hours for deeper/richer shades like a red).

Sheers and Sheer Shimmers have a more balm-like consistency that feels a little thinner but is wetter/more emollient than Mega Mattes, so ultimately, they feel quite different applied; they have sheerer coverage, though more semi-sheer to semi-opaque than very sheer, and have the shortest wear time at two to fours with light hydration.

Metallized is the most shimmery of the finishes, though some of the other finishes have shades that are actually as shimmery (to me), but the Metallized formula has a thinner, more emollient base that isn’t as dense or as cream-like as the Creams; they feel more like the Sheers but a bit heavier and more pigmented (but seem to run semi-opaque to opaque, not always fully opaque) with average wear (four to five hours), light hydration.

Keep Tame

Keep Tame is a soft, medium plum with strong, warm undertones and a natural sheen. It had semi-sheer color coverage, which was as expected based on it being a Sheer finish. The consistency was lightweight, thin, and emollient enough to apply evenly without tugging on my lips. It emphasized lip texture slightly, though, which was its biggest “con.” It wore well for three hours and was lightly hydrating over time.

As a FYI, this shade was honey-scented and flavored.

Bing

Bing is a medium pink with subtle, cool undertones and a frosted finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation that applied somewhat evenly, but there was subtle streaking along the edges of my lips and a touch of product in my deeper lip lines.

The finish of the lipstick had a tendency to catch on imperfections, so if you have naturally drier or flakier lips, you may have more application issues than I did. The texture felt lightweight, lightly emollient and was comfortable to wear over the four hours it lasted for. The formula felt neither drying nor hydrating to me.

As a FYI, this shade was cherry-scented and flavored.

Red Hot

Red Hot is a bright, pinky-red with cool undertones and a semi-matte finish. It had nearly opaque pigmentation in a single layer, which could have applied more evenly for me–it looked streaky along the edges and caught on any texture.

There was some separation along my lip lines, though the brighter color made that harder to see in person. The consistency was denser and firmer in the tube, so it was best applied with shorter strokes to avoid drag. The color stayed on well for six hours, left a stain behind, and was neither drying nor hydrating over time.

As a FYI, this shade was cinnamon-scented and flavored.

Several reasons why these are a pass for me. I don’t mind mini lipsticks as long as I pay attention and keep the bullet only minimally rolled up. I also can apply with a lip brush but since I would be getting these for my daughter she might not be as careful and they would likely break. Then the shades are not colours that my daughter would wear a lot. They are okay for me but only one really appeals to me and that is Red Hot. They are not great performers and for the price, this is an easy pass for me. Oh also, I have a gazillion lipsticks and need to do a de-clutter after the holidays so I don’t want to buy more that I would likely not wear!!

I almost bought this the other day (5x bonus points on UD plus 200 bonus points on a $25 purchase, plus free shipping on this item), but I resisted. I am glad that I skipped it now. This is surprising from a Vice set because the formula is generally so consistent. I notice all the full sizes are marked down. I wonder if UD is reformulating again.
