Elements

Urban Decay Elements Holiday 2018 Eyeshadow Palette ($52.00 for 0.53 oz.) is a new, limited edition offering for the holidays that features 19 shades with four shades being mostly matte and the rest being very shimmery. There is an assortment of color with a mixture of cool- and warm-toned shades. I think that the person who this is best suited for is someone who doesn’t need a lot of mattes in their eyeshadow palette, whether they prefer shimmers in the crease or if they expect to pair this palette with mattes they already own.

I felt that this palette could have been more cohesive while still being a more colorful scheme by making Earth Bound a matte, deeper green (instead of a pearl/satin); Dream Weaver more of a dark, matte purplish-taupe (the pink doesn’t coordinate well with most of the palette to my eye!); and swapping Moon Rock for a deep plum or purple matte, as I felt that Moon Rock and Tectonic were similar enough that having both was redundant (or at least, given my need for more contrast and depth!).

Tectonic

Tectonic is a dark, plummy brown with warm undertones and multi-colored sparkle. It had rich color coverage that applied evenly to bare skin, though there was slight fallout when I worked with it even when I was mindful of it. The texture was soft, slightly looser in the pan, but it was blendable overall. It wore well for eight and a half hours on me but had slight fallout over time.

Formula Overview

$19.00/0.05 oz. - $380.00 Per Ounce

The formula is typically described as "high-pigment" that "stays on your lids" and goes on "seamlessly." Their permanent range has a lot of fantastic shades in it, and many of them are pigmented, blendable, and long-wearing. Some of their matte are real workhorse kind of shades with soft, smooth, silky, and blendable textures, while their shimmers and pearly shades are very rich in payoff and apply beautifully to the lid. They wear between seven and nine hours on me, depending on the shade and finish.

Fire Starter

Fire Starter is a deep red with warmer undertones and faint, pinkish pearl strewn over a matte finish. The pearl did not seem to impact the finish enough to translate it from matte to shimmer, so this performed and looked liike a matte eyeshadow in practice. The pigmentation was opaque in a single layer, while the texture was soft, somewhat dusty, but blendable on my skin. It seemed to soften and looked a bit faded within five minutes of initial application, so it did not add was much depth as I wanted it to given the scheme of the palette. It lasted well for eight hours on me.

Lioness

Lioness is a medium-dark, plummy brown with warm undertones and a metallic sheen. The eyeshadow had rich color payoff paired with a smooth, lightly creamy texture that was denser but not stiff or dry, which made it easy to apply and to blend out on my lid. It wore beautifully for eight and a half hours on me.

Moon Rock is a medium-dark bronze with warm undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. Fool's Gold

Fool’s Gold is a bright, light-medium green-gold with warm undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. It didn’t seem warm enough to be a chartreuse but it seemed almost too green to be a gold or pewter, but if I had to pick one, I felt it was closest to gold, especially when paired with warmer shades. It had intense pigmentation with a smooth, lightly creamy texture that was dense, slightly thick, but it applied evenly and didn’t emphasize my lid texture. It lasted for nine hours on me before it started to crease faintly.

Silver Burn

Silver Burn has a blackened purple base with lighter pink and purple sparkle. It had a drier consistency that made it hard to apply the eyeshadow evenly and harder to build up the coverage, even when used over an eyeshadow primer. It had semi-sheer coverage, moderate fallout, and was a pain to use in just about every way. I could only make it workable when I used a dampened brush, which helped minimize the fallout and improved the coverage, though it still wasn’t great. It lasted well on me for seven hours.

Fortune-Teller

Fortune-Teller is a medium, plummy brown base with blue-to-green shifting pearl. It had rich color payoff that applied evenly to bare skin. The eyeshadow felt smooth to the touch, was lightly creamy, and had a denser, thicker consistency but still sat well on my lid. It started to fade noticeably on me after eight hours of wear.

Electric Air

Electric Air is a silvery lavender with subtle, warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It had nearly opaque color payoff that applied evenly and smoothly to bare skin. The texture was dense but creamy enough to be yielding and pick up well with a brush. I had no trouble applying or blending out this shade. It lasted well for eight hours on me before creasing faintly.

Sapphire Dream

Sapphire Dream is a deep, cobalt blue with cool undertones and a pearly sheen. It was intensely pigmented with a dense, cream-like texture that applied best with a firm, flat synthetic brush or a denser, packing brush. The eyeshadow applied evenly to bare skin and despite the denseness, blended out surprisingly well along the edges but did take a bit of extra effort to get a softer, even edge. It stayed on well for nine hours on me before creasing faintly.

Heavy Water

Heavy Water is a medium blue with subtle, cool undertones and a frosted sheen. The pigmentation was nearly opaque, but it had a denser, slightly stiffer texture that made it more prone to apply unevenly and the base seemed to look ragged so there was more effort required to get a seamless blend out of this shade. It wore well for eight hours on me before it started to crease a bit.

Hex Remedy

Hex Remedy is a deep purple with subtle, cool undertones and a satin sheen. The texture was drier to the touch and felt more firmly-pressed in the pan, which made it more challenging to pick up with a brush and I found that lightly pushing on the surface released product better than pulling or swirling. It had good color coverage in a single layer with that methodology. The eyeshadow applied decently but took some extra effort to diffuse and even out on my lid. It lasted for just over eight hours on me before I noticed signs of fading.

Ego

Ego is a light-medium plum with warmer undertones and cooler, lavender pearl. Dream Weaver

Dream Weaver is a medium-dark pink with subtle, cool undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque color coverage that wasn’t buildable. The texture was drier, almost chalky to me, as it was thin but still rather powdery, so there was a moderate amount of fallout during application. The color could have blended out more easily, too. It stayed on well for seven hours on me.

Luna

Luna is a pale white with cooler, iridescent sparkle and shimmer that gave it a shiny, sparkling finish. It had semi-sheer to medium coverage but was hard to build up, as it was more powdery and drier to the touch. I did not find it worked as well for layering as I had anticipated; it was best layered by pressing and patting it over deeper, cooler-toned shades but the cooler sparkle in it did not seem to mesh with several shades in the palette. It is supposed to be a transformer shade, which is why it is larger as well, but I wasn’t impressed by its ability to transform. It lasted for eight hours but had moderate fallout.

I’m feeling you! Boo hooo! I was hoping for a solid A or A- so as to really have a “Go” to purchase. That said, Christine has given B+’s the palettes that I ended up not regretting so, I’ll just have to test it myself. Also, I’m running now to do the “vanity check” and that may seal it’s fate. But her looks are just sooooo lovely that I really, really am digging the Elements’ vibe!

Genevieve Avatar

Wow – this is a huge palette, and like the Heavy Metals palette, I wonder if it would have been better to have two smaller ones.
What a mammoth effort to review Christine.
I do agree with you about Moon Rock and Techtonic being so similar and I think a good gold would have been a better alternative. A shame about the silvery grey shade too.
I also agree that the bright pink shade does look out of place too.
However it is a pretty solid effort from UD and a beautiful mix of shades.

maha Avatar

would you say this is similar to the last years UD holiday pallet? the heavy metals one?
i LOVED mine but the packaging was so bad, i dropped it and lost the whole thing </3

i never buy something before i read your review <3

raja Avatar

Even though I’m always a sucker for a brown-blue/green duochrome like Fortune Teller, Secret Keeper is the only shade that looks new or not done to death by both UD and other brands. Silver Burn could’ve been interesting, but alas, the patchiness. It’s a pass.

Mariella Avatar

There are several shades in here that I just love (Tectonic, Lioness, Electric Air, Fortune Teller, Moon Rock) and a few others I love but have dupes for. It’s a real shame about Silver Burn looking so nice in the pan but performing poorly. What will keep me from purchasing this palette is, once again, the number of pinks and oranges coupled with packaging I find annoying (round, lots of wasted space….squares or rectangles of these shadows in a square or rectangular palette might actually have been enough for me to overlook the colours I dislike).

Lori Avatar

Just wanted to thank-you for all the hard work that goes into all of your reviews. You give so much info to us. The blues and greens are really pretty, but I doubt I’d use many of them at all. Most of the others I know I would use.
