Too Faced Merry Macarons Eyeshadow Palette
Too Faced Merry Macarons Eyeshadow Palette

Too Faced Merry Macarons Eyeshadow Palette ($39.00 for 0.64 oz.) includes 12 eyeshadows in a mix of warmer neutrals with a pop of purple and plum. The presentation is very gift-worthy, as it opens with a wintry scene that could definitely be displayed (assuming it was to your taste), though it obviously is a lot of excessive packaging if you only intend to keep the palette itself! Luckily, the bulk is separated, so the cardboard palette itself is slim and travel-friendly. There is no mirror on the interior, which is worth noting but may not be a deal-breaker. The palette also included a deluxe sized Better Than Sex Mascara. Like all of the brand’s palette offerings this year, it is scented, and this particular palette is vanilla-scented–noticeable when open but I could not detect the scent after applying. The palette was decent–pigmented, blendable, not too challenging to use–but it is going to be a better fit for someone who has not already indulged in past neutral palettes and likes more sparkly shades, as four of the shimmery shades have chunky sparkle in them.

A note on the size… it’s actually a little confusing, as the box says that each eyeshadow is 1.11g/0.03 oz. with a total net weight of 13.33g/0.47 oz. — the total weight in grams is correct, but the weight in ounces doesn’t make sense, as it should be 0.36 oz. Based on the gram weight for each shade, the corresponding conversion into ounces is actually 0.03915 oz., which results in 0.47 oz. total weight. I am not sure why it was rounded down!

Coconut is a light beige with neutral-to-warm undertones and a matte finish. It had opaque color coverage with a soft, smooth consistency that wasn’t too powdery or too firm in the pan. I felt like it sheered out a bit easily on the skin, though, so a primer would help it stay more opaque if desired. This shade wore well for eight hours on me. Dulce de Leche is a medium brown with warm, yellow undertones and a matte finish. Banana Cream is a medium-dark, coppery bronze with warm undertones and a sparkly, metallic finish. It had larger, chunkier sparkle in it, which had some fall out during application, but the texture was also a bit denser so it supported more of the sparkle within the base. The color was nicely pigmented and lasted for seven and a half hours on me. Huda Beauty Smokey #3 (PiP, ) is brighter, cooler (95% similar). Urban Decay Demo (LE, ) is less shimmery (95% similar). Almond Mocha is a dark brown with neutral-to-warm undertones and a matte finish. It had a really soft, silky texture, which made it dustier and kicked up an excess amount of product in the pan, but it was very blendable and forgiving on the eye–you’ll need to build up the coverage, though, if you want more than medium coverage. The color started to fade after seven and a half hours on me. Urban Decay Suckerpunch (LE, $19.00) is more shimmery, lighter (95% similar). Too Faced Snooze U Lose (LE, $16.00) is lighter (95% similar). Makeup Atelier Red Ochre #5 (P, ) is warmer (95% similar). Persona Fearless (PiP, ) is cooler (95% similar). Champagne Rose is a very light gold with a hint of pink and a frosted, sparkly finish. The consistency was drier and had a tendency to look uneven/patchy applied, though the lighter color against my skin tone (in particular) made it less noticeable than it may be on other skin tones. It is the type of product that would benefit from an adhesive base, like the brand’s own Glitter Insurance. This shade started to crease after seven hours of wear. Stila Nude Shimmer (LE, $18.00) is warmer (95% similar). Natasha Denona Golden Beige (52M) (P, $29.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). MAC Exquisite Ego #1 (LE, $21.00) is warmer (95% similar). Mint Chocolate is a muted, medium-dark purply taupe with neutral undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-sheer, buildable color payoff with a soft, smooth, and blendable texture. It was a bit dusty, but it built up better than anticipated and didn’t look dry on the skin. The eyeshadow wore for just over seven hours on me. Tarte Misty Mauve (LE, ) is lighter (95% similar). Chocolate Raspberry is a dark, plummy purple with warmer undertones and a frosted sheen. The texture was on the drier side, so the powder felt looser with more noticeable shimmer/sparkle to it. It applied decently to the lid, though it had a more faded quality to it and lacked some of the richness it had in the pan. The color wore for just over seven hours on me. Praline is a medium gold with warm, orange undertones and a metallic sheen. It had a softer, slightly drier texture that felt a little looser and chunkier overall. It applied decently, but it would work better with a primer or even a damp brush, which would give it a smoother look on the skin. This shade started to fade noticeably after seven and a half hours of wear. Milani Drenched in Gold (DC, $6.99) is less shimmery (95% similar). Honey Lavender is a light-medium lavender with warm undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. Again, it had a chunkier sparkle that was loosened from the base color, so there was some fall out during application as well as later on during wear; it is a shade that would work better with an adhesive base. It had semi-opaque color payoff and lasted for seven hours (with some fall out). Tom Ford Beauty Daydream #1 (PiP, ) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). Cookies & Cream is a deep black with neutral-to-cool undertones and a mostly matte finish, though there were bits of silver and teal sparkle. The majority of the sparkly bits disappear in practice, so it performed as a matte black when I used it. I used to love TooFaced. But — and this is rhetorical — why do they cheap out on their holiday sets and manufacture the eye shadows in China? Maybe if there wasn’t so much excessive, expensive packaging, they’d manufacture the actual make-up in the U.S. or U.K. or France or Italy or Germany (you get the idea).

I guess I should be glad they’ve saved my wallet this season because I have learned my lesson from past TooFaced holiday releases.

They must dictate the cost/level of quality they are after wherever they produce, so my guess is they’ve chosen to allocate more of the cost to packaging vs. the product itself! If they were unhappy with the quality from a particular manufacturer, it is really on them to approve/send it back!

I like Too Faced’s cute packaging, and most of the shadows look pretty, no D/F scores. Love your eye looks, esp. the purples. Wish Chocolate Raspberry came in a single

Since I am fairly certain that I’ve got dupes for each and every shade, I won’t be buying this one. However, this is a pretty decent one for TF holiday, especially if one is lacking neutrals.

And; that 2nd eye look is so cool! I’m thinking that if I were to use my brand new Selena e/s with UD Vanity, Nars Calisto and ABH Spirit Rock (or MAC Nehru?) I could get a similar bright yet smokey purple eye look?

Okay so I just got through saying that I am not attracted to TF because of their too cutesy packaging and then this is posted, LOL. It isn’t the packaging that I am interested in but rather the many shades of purple, lavender. Your eye looks alone are drawing me to this palette, stunning just really stunning. I have brown eyes and I love using purples on my eyes. I also love green and am still waiting for someone to put out a really good palette of different greens besides Natasha Denona. I don’t have $239 for an eye shadow palette.

I have one Two Faced palette, the matte neutral eye that has been around forever and irs still sold. I use it occasionally for daytime no makeup looks. I have no objection to that palette but any other Too Faced palettes have not created any kind of desire oin me.

I like the shades and for the price, I’m happy to see these grades. I have to get one for my niece….and probably one for me too. lol Hard to resist.

Your purple look is really pretty Christine. They both are actually. I can appreciate when you post the subdued looks too as I often refer to what you have shown when I’m getting bored with my own “neutral” eye.
I’ll definitely gift this as the packaging is so cute.

I’m kinda ticked off at Too Faced. For holiday ’13 and ’14 we had the Few of My Favorite Things palette and the next year it was Everything Nice. Now those were good palettes. Like, REALLY good. Everything Nice had that shade honey pot everyone was flipping out over…you couldn’t go near a YouTube tutorial that wasn’t using that one for a bit…girly was in that one and mauvelous. Favorite Things was even better. So I know Too Faced is capable of putting out fantastic holiday palettes. Both of the above examples had festive pink packaging but they had regular sturdy cardboard LE packaging. Neither of the above turned into a house or a carousel or a unicorn. They were just really great palettes. The buzz of Favorite Things (which sold out before anything else that year. And not BS sell out it was just that good) is when TF already a popular brand started to get more buzz. Without it, I don’t think we’d have seen the chocolate bar. Maybe I’m wrong. I usually am lol but even if the chocolate bar palette was in the works would it have been so large and so popular so fast? Idk, but I do know that Favorite Things put Too Faced in hyper drive and Everything Nice helped cement it’s place in the industry.
Wow. I didn’t mean to write a thesis and I could say A LOT more on the subject but dang it Too Faced!!! You spoiled us, you made us long for holiday season so we could have those amazing palettes that were great to use all year. Then you give us a bunch of cardboard that nobody wants hanging around and in all this mass of packaging are below par product that nobody will be using the week after they get it. It’s ridiculous. Go back to what made you the big pink queen of beauty land and stop insulting us with this literal trash. Because frankly, it may be cute but that’s all that outer packaging is.

HA! Oh Christine, I’m such a dork. Between us, I didn’t see the too faced rant and rave until after I went off here. Feel free to move my rant there or it can stay here. Whatever you think is best. It’s just funny that I kinda lost my chit on TF and you actually had a place right there for me to rave lol I’m so backward.

I love Too Faced, and the colors in this palette look beautiful, but I refuse to spend that much money on makeup that was made in China. I think I’ll wait and check out the Sweet Peach palette when it’starts re-released in December. As always, thank you for your swatches and reviews!

I just purchased the original Chocolate Bar palette as I love neutrals but also purple and burgundy colors. However, now I’m wondering if I should exchange it for this palette as that Violet Chassis and Chocolate Raspberry are really speaking to me. Or, should I go with the PB&J? What do you recommend?
