Smashbox Mauve Be Legendary Matte Lipstick
Smashbox Mauve Be Legendary Matte Lipstick ($21.00 for 0.10 oz.) is a light-medium pink with neutral-to-warm undertones and a satin finish. It had a heavier consistency that was more cream-like than velvety, and it definitely was not matte. The texture caught on the natural texture of my lips, and the color pulled into lip lines over the four hours it lasted. It was neither drying nor hydrating, but it would streak anytime I pressed my lips together. ColourPop 1st Base (LE, $6.50) is darker, less glossy (90% similar). Jaclyn Cosmetics Isla (DC, $18.00) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). ColourPop Tiny Chum (LE, $7.00) is cooler (90% similar). Bobbi Brown Pink Kiss (P, $28.00) is warmer (90% similar). Smashbox Safe Word Be Legendary Matte Lipstick ($21.00 for 0.10 oz.) is a muted, medium-dark rose-brown with warm undertones and a mostly matte finish. This was one of the more matte shades in the range, as most were semi-matte or even satin. It had a velvety consistency that applied the full coverage color evenly and smoothly. On me, I was able to wear it for six hours, but it was lightly drying over time. Make Up For Ever C107 (DC, $22.00) is warmer (95% similar). Pat McGrath 1995 (P, $38.00) is lighter (90% similar). NYX Mauve Mist (P, $7.50) is more shimmery, lighter (90% similar). NARS Get It On (P, $26.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). MAC Whirl (P, $19.00) is lighter, warmer (85% similar). Smashbox Pinch Me Be Legendary Matte Lipstick ($21.00 for 0.10 oz.) is a bright, medium-dark orange-coral with warm undertones and a semi-matte finish. The texture was thicker, denser, and emphasized lip lines as the color settled there over time, so it wasn’t the most flattering shade to wear. I would recommend a lip primer or lip liner underneath to minimize settling. It had opaque coverage, though, and it was neither drying nor hydrating over the five hours it lasted. MAC Tropic Tonic (P, $19.00) is lighter, brighter (95% similar). Makeup Geek Smarty Pants (P, $12.00) is lighter, brighter (95% similar). Givenchy Croisiere Coral (310) (LE, $36.00) is lighter, brighter, warmer (90% similar). ColourPop Come Up (P, $7.00) is brighter (90% similar). Bite Beauty Gingersnap (DC, $26.00) is lighter (90% similar). MAC Vegas Volt (P, $19.00) is lighter, brighter (90% similar). NARS Juliette (P, $34.00) is lighter, brighter (90% similar). KVD Beauty Julia (LE, $20.00) is lighter (90% similar). ColourPop Sucker (DC, $5.00) is more muted (85% similar). Makeup Geek Jitterbug (LE, $12.00) is lighter, less glossy (85% similar). FORMULA OVERVIEW |
Smashbox Be Legendary Matte Lipstick ($21.00 for 0.10 oz.) is supposed to be a creamy, long-wearing, richly pigmented formula that’s lightweight and moisturizing. The texture has a more velvety feel compared to the Cream range, and the finish varied between matte and satin. The formula didn’t cling, but it often accentuated the appearance of lip lines and natural texture on the lips, and it was mostly a non-drying formula. The majority of the colors I tested had good pigmentation and longer wear. There was a very, very faint vanilla scent to them (I could only detect when the entire tube is untwisted) but no discernible taste.

Pinch Me is such a cute color!
It is!
Ooooh I love ’em ALL! Such great shades.
That is awesome to hear!
Safe Word looks stunning on you!
Thank you! 🙂
I’m putting Safe Word on my wishlist. When I have bold eye looks, it’s nice to have a more muted lipstick that doesn’t compete with it
Let me know if you end up trying it, Katherine!
These look better than I imagined they would. Idk why, but my expectations weren’t high for the brand?
That said, each and every one looks good. But the clear winner for me is Safe Word! This is how I wanted Whirl or 1993 to look on me, but Whirl turned into an “I ate a bar of milk chocolate, didn’t bother wiping off my lips, and it dried up on them!”, and 1993 just looked blah. This one has just that special something that gives off a more dimensional, alive look. So I’ll be checking it out! ?
I hear ya, Nancy! They’re turning out better than anticipated.
Safe Word is calling my name definitely because it has a touch more pink in it than UD 1993, which just looked blah on me.
Not bad, most of these shades would be a pass for me though.
Aw, darn!
I can’t decide between this formula and the new MUFE Artist Rouge!! I love Safe Word Be Legendary though!!
So tough!
I love Safe Word! I probably have dupes, but it’s gorgeous.
That seems to be the fave!
Safe Word is the clear winner for me, too. Pinch Me is for others. Mauve is not my idea of mauve. SW is a great neutral, to balance out, as Katherine says, and I know exactly what you mean about the 1993 disappointment, Nancy. I get the same, uh, no, that I get with Laguna and other yellowy brown bronzers. You think it’ll be great, but…. Glad I preswatched 1993 instead of ordering it online. I can think of the name in my job reference, rather than a BDSM reference, Safe Hands! ( they are behaviorally challenged.). Kind of done with the trendy names, that aren’t so subtle, though. Tired of strolling through the urban dictionary.
Mauve seems more like pink than mauve to me – not dusty enough, not enough brown or purple tones.
Really like Safe Word, but I feel certain I have an indie dupe … which I now want to find so I can wear it.
Yep, “Negligee” by Silk Naturals — identical to what I’m seeing onscreen.
So glad you found the dupe 😀
Pleased to see you reviewing more Smashbox, even if most of it hasn’t been to my liking. It’s one of the few brands available for me to purchase in person now, so more reviews are always appreciated.
Duly noted! 🙂
