Natasha Denona Sunset Eyeshadow Palette Review, Photos, Swatches
Sunset
Natasha Denona Sunset Eyeshadow Palette ($129.00 for 1.20 oz.) includes 15 eyeshadows in various warm-toned hues–a lot of red/orange-toned coppers, oranges, and browns–with a mix of matte, shimmer, and sparkle finishes. I think it is actually one of the best Natasha Denona palettes that has been released with respect to cohesiveness and quality. I also feel like 15 is a solid number of shades to create a curated, cohesive, and useful palette from, and for the brand, while still pricey, still a more palatable price compared to the larger 28-pan palettes. The more sparkly shades included in this palette were a serious improvement from the Star palette as well, though I would still recommend using them damp for maximum performance. The majority of the eyeshadows also wore better without primer on me this time around than they have in the past.
It’s a real shame that this palette is limited edition–I think the brand should consider adding it to the permanent line-up or else doing a major re-release. I know that some retailers that carried this palette are working on a limited restock, but I have not heard anything solid or a confirmed date yet. Alternatively, an excellent palette with a similar vibe (very warm-toned) is Viseart Warm Mattes, which I would then supplement with shimmers within one’s stash or some of these single eyeshadows or BH Foil Eyes, which has a lot of frost/metallic shades.
Edit: As of 2:54PM PST, Sephora has it back in stock.

Atmosphere (120M)
Atmosphere (120M) is a deep, reddish copper with warm undertones and a pearly sheen. It had intense pigmentation that applied evenly to bare skin and blended out with ease. The texture was smooth, firmer than post shades in the pan, but I didn’t have any issues picking up the color with my brush or applying it to the lid. It wore well for eight hours on me before creasing subtly.

Formula Overview
$29.00/0.08 oz. - $362.50 Per Ounce
The majority of the brand's eyeshadows are quite pigmented, blendable, and long-wearing. The eyeshadows have improved over time, particularly with respect to longevity (without a primer). The original formula often creased on me within seven to eight hours, whereas the more current formula wears eight to nine hours with fading (instead of full-on creasing). The more matte finishes tend to be a bit more velvety, substantial, and less dry/powdery compared to prior iterations.
The metallic finish is often the creamiest, slightly denser in feel, but has excellent pigmentation, adhesion, and blendability. The sparkling shades can have some fallout, depending on how they're applied and how sparkly they are, so they sometimes work better with fingertips or a dampened brush; they can also run sheerer compared to other finishes.
Cream-Powders are the more unique formulation and tend to have firmer, almost stiff, consistencies and more semi-opaque, watercolor-esque coverage. They are longer-wearing, but they can take a few uses to learn how to use. This formula has also improved compared to when it first debuted--it is a bit more yielding now.

Sinai (121CM)
Sinai (121CM) is a medium, orange-brown with strong, warm undertones and a mostly matte finish. The color payoff was fantastic–very rich and opaque–while the consistency was smooth, finely-milled, and not at all powdery or dusty in the pan. It blended out nicely on the lid and lasted for eight hours on me.

Ice Gold (122K)
Ice Gold (122K) is a bright, white gold with warm undertones and a metallic sheen with bits of sparkle. Most of the sparkle seemed to get lost in translation when it came to actual application (so a bit of fallout during application but not during wear), though. The texture was smooth, creamy but a little looser in the pan so there was some excess product that kicked up in the pan while I used it with a brush. It had good pigmentation that wore well for seven and a half hours on me.

Mandarine (123DC)
Mandarine (123DC) is a vibrant, medium orange with strong, golden shimmer. It had rich pigmentation that applied best with a slightly firmer, flatter eye brush by patting it on (or used with a dampened brush) as it was very soft and a more loosely pressed in the pan, which made it incredibly blendable but resulted in slight fallout during application. This shade lasted for eight hours on me before fading slightly.

Vulcano (125CM) is a deep, reddish brown with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. The pigmentation was mostly opaque and certainly buildable to full coverage by just patting a touch m ore product on top (not even a full second layer). The texture was smooth, soft, and finely-milled but slightly “thicker” so that there wasn’t a lot of powder kicked up in the pan when used. It started to fade slightly after eight hours of wear on me.

Sundazed (128K)
Sundazed (128K) is a medium gold with warm, yellow undertones paired with a sparkling, metallic finish. This was the “worst” shade in the palette, as it had a chunkier texture and was looser in the pan, so some of the sparkle did not bind with the base product and dropped below the lid when applied. I would use this one with a dampened brush (helped a lot) or an adhesive base. It had semi-opaque pigmentation, which was buildable if used with a dampened brush. The color lasted for seven and a half hours before creasing but had slight fallout.

Terra (129CM)
Terra (129CM) is a rich, dark copper with warm, red undertones and a semi-matte finish. There was very subtle shimmer strewn through the product that gave it more of a “natural matte” finish on the lid but wasn’t noticeably shimmery to my eye. It was richly pigmented, applied evenly, and blended out easily. The eyesahdow stayed on well for eight and a half hours on me.

Formula Overview
-
The majority of the brand's eyeshadows are quite pigmented, blendable, and long-wearing.

Bermuda (130CM)
Bermuda (130CM) is a light-medium peach with strong, warm orange undertones and a matte finish. The texture was smooth, finely-milled, and silky, though there was a touch of dustiness in the pan. It applied well and sheered out just slightly from its otherwise opaque pigmentation without a primer. It started to fade on me after eight hours of wear.

Morgana (131DC)
Morgana (131DC) is a rich, molten coral with warm, orange undertones and fiery copper shimmer. It was extremely pigmented–a little went such a long way–that the merest tap of the brush yielded plenty of product. This was also one of the harder shades to dupe in the palette as it had a lot more depth and richness than shades in the same vein. The texture was creamy, smooth, and easy to blend out on the lid. The color wore well for eight and a half hours on me.

Panjin (132CM)
Panjin (132CM) is a muted, medium red with subtle, warm undertones and a mostly matte finish. It had semi-opaque, buildable pigmentation that applied evenly to bare skin. The texture wasn’t as finely-milled compared to the other mattes in the palette, but I didn’t notice any issues when working with it on the lid–it still blended easily and sat well on my skin. It had a similar feel compared to a lot of other red-hued eyeshadows that have been released (which never seem to be as smooth as other colors!). It lasted for eight hours on me.

Igneous (133CM)
Igneous (133CM) is a deep brown with neutral-to-warm undertones and a matte finish. It had good color coverage that was buildable to opaque coverage with less than a second layer’s worth of additional product. The eyeshadow had a very smooth, finely-milled consistency that worked well for blending and diffusing the edges but did not lose its intensity. I noticed slight fading after eight hours of wear.

Sol (134CM)
Sol (134CM) is a bright, medium yellow with soft, warm undertones and a matte finish. As far as yellows go, it was not as warm-toned as I expected–and I’d even say it could have been a little warmer to pair best with the other shades. The texture was smooth, almost cream-like, but not as dense as a cream, and finely-milled. The pigmentation was mostly opaque and certainly buildable to full coverage by adding just a touch more as needed. It wore well for eight hours on me before fading.

What I was told on Instagram by the company is that it will be coming back to Sephora, there is no date yet.
Yeah, that’s what I’ve seen but there’s no concrete dates or insight into the level of stock that will be available 🙂
It’s back in stock online at Sephora.
This is a very beautiful eyeshadow palette and you created some gorgeous looks with it Christine ! And thank you so much for putting photos of the ingredients.
Five big bonus points for ND: 1) Made in Italy (like in “not made in PRC” and I mean no disrespect for China and its people); 2) No talc ; 3) Paraben Free; 4) Not tested on animals; 5) She mentions a potential allergen – the Tartrazine (also known as CI 19140 or FD&C Yellow 5). This is a synthetic dye used in food/cosmetics/medications(i.e. throat lozenges, prescription drugs etc). It may be allergenic but it’s a lot less than other substances (hence its use in medications that have one side colored in yellow – especially prescription drug like antibiotics). I applaud ND for not sacrificing quality and safety in the name of profit.
I wonder if she changed it in her original palettes, because my 28-pan palettes have both talc and parabens, though neither is a concern for me personally!
I have none of the previous ND eyeshadow palettes but I hope that she changes the original formula. Honestly, you can have quality makeup without talc and parabens and this ES palette is a proof. Talc and parabens weren’t a concern for me either until a year ago when I had an almost constant pain in one of my breasts; my GP could not feel anything (neither could I) but she sent me for a mammogram. I had two of them and it turn out I had three lumps, deep in the breast tissue, one of which being large enough to be of concern even if no one in my family had breast cancer or breast lumps. I was sent to MCcGill Univ. Breast Center in Montreal, one of the best in the field in Canada, and I had a biopsy. Fortunately, it was a fibroadenoma (non-cancerous) but I was strongly advised by the doctors to use paraben-free lotions especially on the upper part of my body. It’s not that parabens cause breast lumps, but I was told that they accumulate in the body (which is not good) and that they are found in the breast tumors/tissues examined by the pathologists. Of course, it was a recommendation, but I did my own research afterwards and I chose to completely avoid the parabens in the body lotions and whenever I can on my face. Talc is a potential irritant for the face, but long-term exposure to talc (i.e. inhalation of talc particles found in powders) can lead over time to more serious issues like asthma and lung irritation. Personally, I try to avoid face powders//blushes/eyeshadows containing talc. Again, it’s a personal choice 🙂
I’m happy to hear that everything turned out to be non-cancerous!
Also, I only mention that mine have both/am not actively avoiding so that it would not come off as if I was upset about my palettes as they stand – it was not intended to make light of or otherwise criticize yours or anyone else’s choice to avoid those ingredients!
I agree with it being made in Italy you usually can’t go wrong when something is made in ITALY. Also it wasn’t tested on animals!
Wonderful review and I fully agree! I’m glad I decided to splurge on this particular palette (vs the star palette or the 28 pans). It’s very cohesive and a home un as far as I’m concerned. I CANNOT wait to play with it with the Wayne Goss new eye set. ???
Glad you’re enjoying it!
This palette is seriously beautiful; one of the most beautiful red/orange-toned palettes among all of those that have been released.
But OUCH, that price just kills me. And well, I already own enough warm toned eyshadows. Really cannot buy it. But damn, those shades are enchanting!
I think they could easily release 2-3 5-pans where one is all shimmer and one is all matte!
I really want this one but the $166CAN + $22CAN in tax kills me a little inside.
This one is the first I’ve been really tempted to get consider a Viseart palette is $100CAN.
I cannot find it on Beautybay 🙁 Do you know if it will be available soon or if it’s sold out already?
Sephora just showed it as in stock but has been sold out everywhere, as mentioned above!
I am not sure, but it might be so that Beautybay, (a company based in Europe, the U.K) won’t be stocking this palette due to the content of the yellow colouring substance E102, also called Tartrazine. That substance used to be banned in Europe before due to it being a very strong allergen causing among other things asthma, but made a come back in the late 90’s into food products through the EU. But has again become questioned due to the Southampton study of 2007 where it was found that Tartrazine apart from allergies could also cause behavioural and concentration difficulties in children. After that The U.K. (I am not sure if the entire EU is in on it too) has decided that all products containing this substance has to labelled with a warning that the use of the product could cause these problems in children. If a company doesn’t want to put such a label on a product it can’t then be sold within the U.K. My guess is a cosmetics company wouldn’t like to label their products with such a warning text… So that could be a potential reason why this particular palette won’t be sold through the U.K. But again, I am not sure. This is just a qualified guess.
Beautybay always get those palettes much later. They send an email while it is in stock but I doubt this palette will last as it is LE and having a LOT of success.
ND always kills with performance and quality! I am absolutely in love! I really hope that they relaunch it soon. I know, $129 is such a high price for a palette (considering the lot of palettes with warm tones), but you can never pay too much for great quality! Absolutely incredible. Your looks are also beautiful! <3
Here’s hoping!
This is the first ND product I’ve bought. I read several comments on IG that Sephora restocks the palette in the wee hours of the morning (1:00 – 2:00 am-ish) and I was out late one night and checked and lo and behold it was in stock. So if you want this checking around that time may work in your favour. Although with the insane hype around this palette I wouldn’t be surprised if they brought it back permanently in the near future.
Anyways, I’m glad this gets a solid review from you!
How are you liking yours?
This is without a doubt a well thought palette. I have the feeling that it has the potential to become a HG for many like the ABH Modern Renaissance is.
I would consider it seriously if it wasn’t very LE… I already had the viseart warm matte palette in my visor. But the shimmer of the sunset palette are stunning…
Yep, that’s why I was so surprised it was LE!
The star palette being still available, I thought it would be sort of permanent too haha!
Very pretty for the middle toned warm folks out there. I bet it will work well on dark skin too!
Definitely!
Now these powder look really luxurious. I can’t justify the cost, though. Maybe someone will give it to me as a gift!
One can only hope 🙂
A thing of BEAUTY! Some of these shades seem to be VERY difficult to dupe, too! Especially, Morgana, Mandarine and Bermuda. And of course, I’m going to try to locate dupes within my existing stash. Because $129 is a bit outside my comfort zone, and I can dupe all the other shades as I’m virtually swimming in warm and bright warm neutrals.
I agree that Natasha Denona ought to make this a permanent palette, though!
It would be nice if they did make it permanent at some point!
Not on my list, but glad to see something that is so lovely and holds up to a review.
Always room for great products!
I love warm cranberry/berry shades. But something about this just isn’t doing it for me! Which i am kinda glad for, because i dont have this kind of money for makeup right now!
Phew 😉
I do want this, and I would use it a lot even though I have plenty of warm neutrals. But the price, ouchie. Considering it’s an LE and there’s the shortage, my decision may make itself. I would certainly jump if they make these available in smaller sets (and kept the stock up).
Smaller sets would be great!
There are some truely magical shades in this palette.
I’m not even going to try to find it though, as I have to get back on my low buy. I am happy for the ones who has got it, and I hope you’ll get much use from it and really enjoy it.
Wow this palette is awesome. Only one C-. If I recall correctly the last couple of Natasha Denona eye palettes did not get a good review. I also like that there is no talc.
I had a feeling I was going to love your eye looks with this and I do. However, a) I am only interested in the yellows and oranges (not the reds or browns) so I hate to pay for an expensive palette with several colors I probably won’t use, and b) I am tired of going through hoops trying to get limited editions – its ridiculous and I’m too old for it.
I ordered this on the day of release (ended up getting it from Beautylish as Sephora sold it out from under me; it was in my cart and suddenly was sold out!). I love Natasha Denona’s palettes. I’ve bought the two 28-palettes, the Star palette, and now Sunset. To me, it seems like she has continued to refine and improve the formulas.
I’ll going to purchase this today; however, if it is not in all ways amazing- it will be returned.
I just purchased this palette online at Sephora it has received excellent reviews and after reading your review I broke down and purchased it. I still think it is way too expensive but I do like that it is talc free. I never purchase large palettes & I know I won’t be able to recreate your gorgeous eye look but I will probably use two shadows at a time.
It’s a gorgeous palette for those who love these kinds of shades, very well rating too. The palette is quite cohesive and contains a variety of finishes, which is important so that you can get the most out of the palette.
I really like the fact that it is paraben free, made in Italy and cruelty free. Big plus for the brand.
It’s a shame that it’s limited edition though because, financially, the brand could really earn some serious money by making it permanent. Why do they do this to their customers?
But if you have the ABH Modern Renaissance and BH Foil Eyes, you would have most of these shades.
Gorgeous eye looks Christine.
Wow, I’m SO glad to see ND improving her shadow formula and lowering the price point, but $129 is still very pricey, even if it’s a “good deal” based on # of shadows vs. buying singles, etc. I really wish this kit had come out earlier, because between Colour Pop, Kylie Burgundy, Lorac Unzipped, ABH Modern Renaissance and bunch of other singles, I have too many of these shades covered, can’t justify buying the entire palette for the shades I’m missing, no matter how pretty and unique they might be. So it’s the curse of TMS –too much stash! But I will definitely be eager to see new palettes from ND, with this new improved formula! And thanks for the gorgeous eye looks!
This palette is unbelievably beautiful, but I’m having a hard time justifying the price tag. Although I have yet to find the perfect dupes for Morgana and Mandarine. Would you say it’s worth the price, especially for someone who already has a pretty good makeup collection?
I just ordered mine tonight when I was leaving work I got my Sephora instock email!!I have the Star Palette and I love it so I was extremely disappointed when this sold out so quickly the morning it was released.Im really glad I got one.I have been wanting to purchase both of the 28 pan palettes on Beautylish but they have not reformulated them and they both still contain talc from the info I’ve seen. This fabulous review makes me feel even better about the purchase if you say it’s good Christine I know it’s going to be outstanding❣️
Thanks Christine! I used your link and got it!
Thank you, Denise!
KInd of bored of warm tones and oranges. On my fair pink tones skin they don’t look good. And I don’t like this LE thing. I don’t believe it’s LE. The Star Palette was supposed to be LE but it’s still around… I will buy it if I find a good offer. Not unique enough to justify the full price
Sephora Collection is releasing a $65 palette this Fall that appears to be a complete dupe of this ND Sunset palette. I saw a pic on Instagram and I decided to purchase that one if it swatches decently. This ND palette looks so beautiful on you, though!
Back in stock as of 10:50PM on Sephora. I have the palette. I love it! It’s the best ND palette!
This is a lovely palette, and I love the looks you’ve done with it, but I can’t really see myself buying this. Can’t really justify the price when I’m not that much of an eyeshadow person. I wear it and I love looking at complex eye looks done by others, but it’s not a product category that excites me as much as lipstick or blush. Also, I’m kind of a packaging junkie and while ND’s packaging is serviceable, I expect products at luxury price points to look a lot more interesting.
It is a pretty luxe kind of palette, with all those bright orangey -warm tones in one palette. But when I surveyed the dupe list, I was surprised to find that the BH Foil Eyes came up a lot, as well as ye olde Lorac Pro Palette, the Lorac Pro Metals palette and Sleek Sunset palette. And if you have the Viseart Warm Mattes too – you would be set.
It’s good to see the brand living up to it’s price tag too.
Beautiful eye look Christine.
Thanks a lot, Genevieve!
Just 3 problems with this for me.
Carmine
Mattes
$129
Oh well.
It doesn’t seem like a palette for you at all since you don’t like mattes to begin with, regardless of the other two things!
True, and I get to save $129!! 😀
Do these shadows pop out like her other ones? If so , do they fit into their other palettes so I can swap?
Yes!
