NARS Velvet Eyeliners Reviews, Photos, Swatches (Part 2)
NARS Black Moon Velvet Liner
NARS Black Moon Velvet Liner ($24.00 for 0.04 oz.) is a deep black with a satin finish. It had rich color payoff in one stroke, and it was easy to layer and build as desired, too–it didn’t lift or cause the color to streak. It was creamy enough to be comfortable to apply, but it didn’t migrate or move around immediately. The color wore for eight hours overall. MAC Flourish Me Deep (LE, $18.00) is lighter, warmer (95% similar). Stila Stingray (PiP, $22.00) is glossier (95% similar). Make Up For Ever M10 Matte Black (P, $21.00) is less glossy (95% similar). NARS Blue Lotus Velvet Liner ($24.00 for 0.04 oz.) is a dark, violet-purple with cool, bluish undertones and a satin finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation in one stroke, which was buildable to a minor degree, but it was hard to get fully opaque coverage out of this shade. It could have also applied more evenly. The color started to migrate noticeably after seven and a half hours of wear. NARS St. Marks Place (P, $24.00) is darker (90% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty Purple Reign (LE, $25.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). ColourPop Champs (LE, $7.00) is warmer (85% similar). NARS Curacao Velvet Liner ($24.00 for 0.04 oz.) is a bright, cyan blue with a matte finish. It had good pigmentation in one pass, and the consistency was soft enough to be comfortable, but the edge was firm enough to get a really crisp, even line of color. The color wore well for almost nine hours on me, which made it one of the longer-wearing shades in the range. ColourPop Bee Sting (P, $7.00)(95% similar). ColourPop Bee Sting (DC, $7.00) is darker (95% similar). Fenty Beauty Lady Lagoon (P, $22.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). KVD Beauty Satellite (P, $18.00) is more shimmery (90% similar). Maybelline Arctic Skies (LE, $8.99) is lighter, cooler (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
NARS Darklight Velvet Liner ($24.00 for 0.04 oz.) is a dark, muted navy blue with cool undertones and a satin finish. The color payoff was good, though not fully opaque (and it didn’t layer and build to opaque fo rme). The texture was lightly creamy but seemed to have a little more slip, so it sometimes looked streaky applied–that streakiness was more noticeable if I applied a thicker line of color, whereas a thin line made it so thin that it wasn’t noticeable except in a magnifying mirror! This shade started to migrate to the outer corners of my lash line after seven and a half hours of wear. Haus Labs Navy Matte (P, $22.00) is darker (95% similar). MAC Bionic Bae (LE, $17.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). Estee Lauder Blackened Sapphire (LE, $20.00) is darker (95% similar). Moira Navy (P, $5.00) is darker (95% similar). NABLA Cosmetics Midnight Blue (P, $18.00) is warmer (95% similar). MAC Indian Ink (LE, $16.00) is more muted, warmer (90% similar). ColourPop DTLA (P, $7.00) is lighter (90% similar). Charlotte Tilbury Super Blue (Matte) (PiP, ) is darker, warmer (90% similar). ColourPop DTLA (P, $7.00) is darker (90% similar). FORMULA OVERVIEW | NARS Velvet Liner ($24.00 for 0.04 oz.) is supposed to be creamy, “richly pigmented,” and “softly blendable.” It’s a new, permanent formula for fall, and it is available in eight shades. They are soft enough that they don’t tug or drag on the lash line, and they don’t feel sharp either, despite being a much firmer pencil eyeliner (not waxy like a lot of popular formulas) and tended to be more pigmented in one stroke. Some shades lasted for seven hours, while some lasted closer to nine hours.

Blue Lotus is such a pretty color and harder to dupe
It is a nice one!
Rather a strange comment, but this post dawned on me that I rarely reach for traditional style pencils anymore. By far, the majority I reach for are gel formulas in either plastic or twist up housing.
Same – I do prefer the feel myself, though these were softer than the average true pencil eyeliner!
What a shame about Blue Lotus. That seems to happen far too often with purple eyeliners…purple everything, really. {sigh} ?
However, Curacao has me now lemming after Colourpop Bee Sting! ?
So few purple eyeliners are A++!
I generally stay away from the need sharpening kind of liner because they tend to be drier, but these look so creamy!
They are surprisingly creamy!
OOOOH Curaçao is beautiful
It is!
I love Curacao!
It’s bright!
I haven’t been too interested in any of the colours so far, but Curacao is lovely! Hope to see you use it in some eye looks.
It’s fun, though dupable!
Which do you like better Christine Blue Moon or Perversion?I have personally never found another black pencil that compares to the dark rich color that Perversion has.
I prefer UD’s formula.
Ooh I like all of those! Great marks too!
Woohoo!
Just love the navy colour and these eye liners look like a really great buy.
They are very smooth!
Very fun colors. I was confused by all the UD Perversion comparisons until I realized that they were all different formulas. I think I have plenty that are dupes or close enough that I don’t need these. I almost exclusively use UD 24/7 pencils, I bought the vault. The exception is GWP and beauty boxes so I have tried others. Colors are such fun, especially for eyes.
LOL! Yes, different formulas – so many!!
I’m really looking forward to swatch these myself. Most eyeliner formulas are either too dry and hard on the eyelids or too soft and up smudging all over my eyes. Black Moon and Darklight are very appealing, but my absolute favourite from this line is Mambo.
I think these are just right – creamy and soft enough to be comfortable to apply but they didn’t run everywhere!
I love the more satiny finishes on liners as long as they wear well. Blackmoon and Darklight are quite pretty. I tend to prefer thinner liner these days and slightly smudged so I think I could make Darklight work. I will be heavily considering it for fall.
These would be great for thinner lines!
I don’t need any of these, but they make me want to break out all my blue eyeliners and play around!
Which means you totally should play 😀
Hi Christine!
Have you tried these on your waterline? I’d be interested in how they wore.
I’m on a quest for a long lasting liner for my waterline that doesn’t transfer to my lower waterline. Bare Minerals round the clock fits the bill, but it’s getting finished and as far as I know it’s discontinued.
Thanks!
Sorry, I didn’t test these on the waterline – I just got punctal plugs and am trying not to get too much liner on my waterline as I get used to them.
