Poison Garden

NABLA Cosmetics Poison Garden Eyeshadow Palette ($45.00 for 0.39 oz.) was surprisingly unimpressive given past experiences with the brand’s single eyeshadows and palettes. I felt like the shades were hit or miss and not just with the matte shades, which were done in hues that I would expect to be a little under-pigmented or need extra effort to blend out, but they missed on some of the shimmers, too. I think the color scheme comes together well for a variety of looks but wish the performance was better.

Zodiac

Zodiac is a blackened blue with cool undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation paired with a drier, more powdery consistency that was prone to fallout. On the upside, it was fairly blendable, though the deeper hue and matte finish did make it a little more difficult to blend out than the average shimmer. It lasted nicely for eight hours before fading noticeably on me.

Formula Overview

$8.00/0.09 oz. - $88.89 Per Ounce

The brand has a few different powder eyeshadow formulations, and because they don't just differ in finish but in price, they're listed as individual formulas on Temptalia, but for ease, I wanted to keep the same overview available so it's easy to get a big picture overview of their powder eyeshadows generally!

Super Matte Eyeshadows are "highly pigmented, completely opaque" with a "full, velvety" finish. The Super Mattes have a more finely-milled, velvety, and more substantial texture compared to the brand's Soft Matte eyeshadows, and I also found that they were much more pigmented than the Soft Mattes, too. There was more fallout during application if I wasn't careful due to the Super Matte shades being so pigmented, though. If one prefers building up coverage, the Soft Mattes would be more suitable. The eyeshadows in this finish tended to wear seven to eight hours on me.

Top Coat Wet & Dry Eyeshadows are supposed to give a "wet effect" and can be used wet or dry but are suggested to be used by "dabbing them on with your fingers" or "trying it wet." I found that these varied--some were really soft, blendable, and extremely pigmented with more fleck-like sparkle and others were drier and firmer with a thinner texture that was stiffer to work with. Most of them did apply best with fingertips or with a dampened brush over a dry brush. This finish is more interesting than the others, but I'd pay attention to the specific shades as there was some inconsistency. The wear time ranged from six to eight hours and slight to moderate fallout.

Satin Eyeshadows are supposed to have a "gentle sheen" with "the finest pearls" that will have "excellent adhesion" and be "long-lasting." They can also be applied wet or dry, and some shades did apply more smoothly or had better pigmentation when applied with a dampened brush, but the majority were easy to work with dry. The texture was smooth, firm but not too dense, and most shades blended out easily as the formula wasn't stiff to work with. Most shades lasted seven to eight hours.

Soft Matte Eyeshadows are supposed to give a "soft and delicate" effect while blending "easily." While the brand mentions "soft and delicate," the swatches they provided of the shades in this finish were showing opaque coverage in one layer, so the expectation would be for true, full color coverage, but a lot of the shades in the finish seemed more muted (which could be interpreted as "soft and delciate"). My experience was that the pigmentation ranged from medium to opaque but most shades were buildable, and I felt like buildable, matte eyeshadows are much needed and quite versatile--there's a huge difference in a poorly pigmented eyeshadow and one that can be pigmented, just requiring two layers--the latter gives one a lot of control over how it can appear in a look. The shades in this finish seemed to fade a little faster on me with six to seven hour wear on average.

Pearl Eyeshadows are supposed to "apply evenly, blend well" with "excellent skin adhesion" and "long-lasting" wear with high pigmentation. These are your m re typical shimmery, powdery eyeshadow formula with light creaminess, moderately dense textures, and are usually quite easy to blend out. Most of the shades had semi-opaque to opaque pigmentation that lasted between seven and eight hours on me. Some shades were very metallic and others were a soft frost.

Fabric

Fabric is a light, golden copper with strong, warm undertones and a metallic sheen. The pigmentation was fantastic, while the texture was soft, smooth, and blendable with just a touch of powderiness in the pan, but it didn’t result in noticeable fallout during application. It stayed on well for eight and a half hours on my lid.

Adoration

Adoration is a cool, sparkling blue-to-violet shifting mix of sparkle and shimmer in a translucent base. The texture was chunky and more difficult to apply with brushes, as it had a tendency to come away in clumps initially while the pan hardened up noticeably after two uses. It had semi-sheer coverage, which seemed as anticipated as this was listed as a “top coat.” It wore well for seven and a half hours but had fallout over time.

Berry Bite

Berry Bite is a rich, medium-dark berry with strong, cool undertones and a matte finish. The eyeshadow had opaque color coverage in a single layer, while the texture was soft, fairly smooth, and blended out well along the edges. It lasted well for almost nine hours on me before visibly fading.

Adagio is a deep brown with cool undertones and a matte finish. Subliminal

Subliminal is a light-medium copper with warm undertones and a chunky, glittery finish. It had a drier, more loosely-pressed consistency that felt chunky to the touch. There was a ton of fallout during application, and it took a lot of effort to get a fairly even layer of product on. I would recommend using this shade with a dampened brush to minimize fallout and help it apply better. It wore well for seven hours with fallout.

Archetype

Archetype is a medium-dark bronze with warm undertones and flecks of gold, green, and plum shimmer. It had nearly opaque pigmentation with a soft, smooth consistency that applied nicely and blended out with ease. It lasted well for eight hours before fading on me.

Rosita

Rosita is a soft, peachy-pink with warm undertones and a metallic sheen. The color coverage was nearly opaque, but the consistency was slightly dusty, which made it more prone to sheering out. If I patted and pressed it on, the payoff stayed more opaque than if I swept it on. It stayed on well for eight hours on me before fading slightly.

Majorelle

Majorelle is a bright, cobalt blue with strong, cool undertones and a matte finish. It had sheer color coverage, which was difficult to apply and blend out, as it was so, so powdery and gave me more fallout than actual coverage. With a primer, it was at least buildable to medium coverage. I was surprised that it was such a spectacular fail, as it is obviously a huge POP! in the palette at a glance. It lasted for six and a half hours on me before it started to fade visibly.

Narrative is a light brown with warm, yellowish undertones and a matte finish. It had good color payoff that adhered well to bare skin and blended out without issues. The consistency was soft, a smidgen dusty in the pan but nothing concerning. It lasted nicely for eight hours before showing some signs of wear.

Opera

Opera is a rich burgundy with subtle, cool undetones and a matte finish. It had nearly opaque color payoff in a single layer, which was buildable, but the texture was unforgiving–it was firmer and thinner, which made it prone to darkening unevenly on my skin. It needed to be applied over a powdered or drier base, though it was still a struggle to blend out the edges. It stayed on well for nine hours before showing some fading, and it left a faint stain behind after I removed it.

I think this is a fairly average palette from a brand that has delivered much better products in the past. The shades, to me, seem rather random with shades from all over the spectrum included. What they have done to that bright matte blue (a shade colour that is rarely used) is awful. A more subtle deeper blue in a shimmer would have been better.
Lovely eye look Christine.

I have really liked the Nabla shadows that I have and so I would have picked this up except for the no/low buy so I am glad I didn’t order this. I am surprised given the better quality of the other shadows and palettes that these scored poorly. But, my wallet is happy and thanks for the save, Christine.

kjh Avatar

I’d thought I would end January ruing one of my low buy rules: no new brands. Nabla was one of them. Certainly won’t be missing this one! What dupes I have are, and I like, better. Virtually no dupes is not really a good sign: you tend not to gravitate towards those shades. And despite it being fairly conducive/obvious for looks, I find it a tad incoherent. Sing it: ain’t missing you at all.??

Wednesday Avatar

I have this palette and I quite like it. I wouldn’t give it an A either, but I’m not experiencing significant problems. The blue is wow beautiful and while I get a bit of f/o on application, I find it holds its intensity well. I wore it to a Holiday party and my eye look held all night. I have small eyes and the shadow is intense so I’m only using a bit on outside corner and lower lashline. I work on top of tarte shape tape as a base (tf btw is my concealer of choice.. lol.. need to use up shape tape and it works well as primer for me). Mel Thompson did a look with this palette that had me lemming it baaad. I rarely copy looks from folks, but I loved the combo of the burgundy with the blue.

No shining star, but definitely workable over tacky base if you enjoy the colour story.

Andrew Avatar

Just a quick tip, be careful when using any of the shadows with Red 7 as an ingredient (I saw 3 or 4); it’s an intense lake dye which isn’t approved for use in the eye area in The US. It’s approved in The EU for eye use, but still seen as somewhat of a taboo considering the risk to consumers. It can easily cause irritation and staining on those with sensitive eyes/skin. In case you were wondering whether or not government agencies actually inspect or investigate most newly launched products, here’s one bit of proof that they aren’t and rarely ever do. You’d be very surprised at how common it is for brands to sneak taboo ingredients under the radar.

kjh Avatar

Do the lake dyes cause more problems because the are organic? As a term, Lake goes back to lac, goes back to, yes, you carmine sensitive people, insects…. it always makes me laugh, when people say, ‘You can’t be allergic to X, it’s natural/organic.’ Instead of being sarcastic, ‘Have you ever heard of tree pollen?’

Michelle Avatar

It’s like that special someone you’re crushing hard on and can do no wrong, but then you end up bumping into each other at a party and have the most awkward conversation that makes you question your taste altogether. I adore Nabla eyeshadows singles (and the brand in general), but I ended up returning Poison Garden. Their palettes seem to be getting progressively worse in quality, which is incredibly disappointing and hurts my heart. I do hope they come out with a single version of Honey though. That shade is amazing.
