Marc Jacobs Highliner Matte Gel Eye Crayons (Part 2) Review, Photos, Swatches

Marc Jacobs Beauty (Pop)ular Highliner Matte Gel Eye Crayon

(Pop)ular

Marc Jacobs (Pop)ular Highliner Matte Gel Eye Crayon ($25.00 for 0.01 oz.) is bright, medium pinky-red with warm undertones and a satin finish. It had semi-opaque, buildable pigmentation that applied evenly to the lash line. The texture was smooth, creamy, and comfortable to apply and to wear. It stayed on well for nine hours on my waterline and twelve hours on my lower lash line.

The formula is supposed to have “intense color payoff” with “12-hour longwear” with a “bold matte finish” that is supposed to be waterproof and “well-suited” for the waterline. The majority of the shades are very pigmented with mostly opaque to fully opaque coverage in a single pass, while the texture is creamy but dries down within ten to fifteen seconds. They wear shorter on the waterline (eight to ten hours) and longer on the lower lash line (ten to twelve hours). The formula is fantastic for lining, but the one thing that makes me hesitate is that the past iterations of the liners have dried out in as little as one year (with some lasting two years or longer), though I have noticed the more shimmery shades are first to dry out.

Out of the Blue

Marc Jacobs Out of the Blue Highliner Matte Gel Eye Crayon ($25.00 for 0.01 oz.) is a bright cobalt blue with strong, cool undertones and a matte finish. Marc Jacobs Beauty Pink of Me Highliner Matte Gel Eye Crayon

Pink of Me

Marc Jacobs Pink of Me Highliner Matte Gel Eye Crayon ($25.00 for 0.01 oz.) is a pale pink with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had good color payoff in one stroke, though it took two layers for opaque coverage. The consistency was creamy enough to apply comfortably but not slide around. The stronger white base made it appear a bit streaky, though. On my waterline, it lasted for eight hours, and on my lower lash line, it lasted for ten hours.

I’ve been trying to get out of my black/ dark brown comfort zone with eyeliners, so I ordered Mist Me. I totally agree with your evaluation- takes a couple of passes for complete opacity, but the lasting power is great afterwards. I can definitely see myself going back for more of these, loathe though I am to drop that much on an eyeliner. (They’re more expensive than a full-size Bite Lipstick and the same price as a Nars Eye Paint in Canada!)

These are some really nice shades, but even if they were available here in the uk, I’d probably pass because of how quickly they seem to dry out. I had that problem with the only one I’ve tried (Intro(vert)) which is really disappointing – like I’ve still got some UD eyeliners that I’ve had for years and travelled to various climates with that are still as good as ever.
Shame, because the line has some really nice colours. I wonder if it’s a problem with the formula or packaging.

Hi Christine. May I ask how Pink of Me looks on your waterline? Do you think it was too stark with the white base? I’d love to see a photo of it on you! I’m always on a search for an eye brightening shade for the waterline that lasts!

Pami Avatar

Thanks so much for directing me to a photo of it on your waterline, that’s so helpful! After seeing it on, I think it may be too “stark” for my tastes, meaning it stands out vs a more subtle brightening where you don’t notice the waterline, it just looks good and also counteracts the redness in the whites of my eyes.

My favorite eye brightening liner pencil that I love for my waterline is Chanel Clair, I keep hoping MJ will make a matte Highliner or Fineliner in a shade like that. He had a LE set that included a mini Fineliner in a beige shade, but surprisingly it’s not a permanent full size. Still, I’m glad to see he has come out with additional color options, I think the Highliner formula is great! It wears better on my sometimes watery eyes than any other pencil I’ve tried!

I forgot to mention that on the list of products used in that look photo you shared that I think you accidentally put Mist Me instead of Pink of Me.

Bought the Out of the Blue pencil after seeing your swatches. I think it will be a beautiful contrast worn in the waterline with a warm orange/red look from the Modern Renaissance palette and make my brown eyes really pop!

Mist Me and Pink of Me! And The purple ande the red from the first part! I really want all four. Then there’s the lovely Over(Night).
I think Pink of Me would be really good on my waterline. Mist Me is so very pretty.
I’ve been feeling very low, still am, but now I force myself to do things I know I like. I’ve read every review, but haven’t posted anything for some time. I have added to the wishlist, though 🙂
