Make Up For Ever Artistic (Holiday 2016) Artist Palette Review, Photos, Swatches
Make Up For Ever Artistic (Holiday 2016) Artist Palette
Make Up For Ever Artistic (Holiday 2016) Artist Palette ($49.00 for 0.45 oz.) includes nine shades of Artist Eyeshadow–all shades are from the permanent range, and if you already have a few of the brand’s pre-made palettes, this is probably redundant. I personally prefer the cardboard palettes they’ve put out before, as they are slimmer and more travel-friendly–the metal case is more substantial but seems rather bulky. The quality of the eyeshadows was consistent with the permanent singles I have, and if you’ve never tried the brand’s formula, this might be a palette to check out. But as many fans of the Artist range have said: with 200 shades to choose from, how is it that they keep pulling from the same 50?
Value
- Artist Shadow: $21.00 for 0.08 oz. or $262.50/oz.
- Total Value: $118.13
ME122 Snow is a bright white with cooler undertones and a frosted, metallic finish. It had semi-opaque color payoff with a creamy, denser consistency that blended out well but is best used with a flatter brush for maximum pickup. It wore well for eight and a half hours on me. S102 Onyx is a deep black with a satin finish. It had intense, opaque color coverage with a smooth, cream-like consistency that applied well to bare skin. Even though it is quite pigmented, I didn’t have any trouble blending and diffusing the edges out. The color started to fade after nine hours of wear. Chanel Rêve d'Orient #4 (LE, )(100% similar). Kevyn Aucoin Blackout (LE, ) is glossier (95% similar). City Color Black Widow (P, $6.99) is lighter, warmer (95% similar). Tarte Fashionista (LE, ) is less shimmery (95% similar). ME108 Steel is a medium-dark gray with a metallic finish and bluer undertones. The pigmentation was great, while the texture was fairly smooth, blendable, and dense. It could have been a touch easier to blend out around the edges. It started to break down on me after eight and a half hours of wear. Buxom Cool Caviar (P, $12.00) is cooler (95% similar). NARS Bad Behaviour (DC, $25.00) is warmer (95% similar). Urban Decay Redemption (LE, $19.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Hourglass Graphite #4 (PiP, ) is less shimmery (95% similar). MAC Evening Grey (P, $20.00) is darker (95% similar). Chanel Fleur de Pierre (106) (P, $32.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). bareMinerals Abracadabra (LE, ) is lighter (95% similar). MAC Tundra (LE, ) is cooler (90% similar). MAC Light of the Silvery Moon (LE, $20.00) is lighter (90% similar). NARS Night Rhythm (LE, $19.00) is more shimmery, warmer (90% similar). D552 Crystalline Gray Beige is a very light taupe with subtle, warm undertones and a frosted finish. It had good pigmentation, though it was not quite opaque, but it was buildable to full coverage with two layers. The texture was soft, a little sparkly, so there were some loose sparkles that came away from the base color as I blended it out on the lid. This shade wore well for eight hours and had minor fall out. Sephora Lunar Eclipse (98) (DC, $10.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). Stila Rose Pewter (LE, $18.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). Dior Constellation (864) #2 (LE, ) is cooler (95% similar). Anastasia Beigely (LE, $12.00) is warmer (95% similar). Cle de Peau Pewter Veil #3 (LE, ) is cooler (95% similar). Stila Warm Silver (LE, $18.00) is more shimmery, darker, cooler (90% similar). Tarte C'est La Vie (LE, ) is cooler (90% similar). bareMinerals Golden Pear (LE, $14.00) is less shimmery, more muted (90% similar). ME614 Graphite Brown is a deep brown with subtle, warm, reddish undertones and a satiny sheen. It was intensely pigmented with a cream-like, dense, and smooth texture that applied well to bare skin. I noticed signs of fading after nine hours of wear. Too Faced Hot Fudge (PiP, $16.00) is less shimmery, darker, more muted (95% similar). I220 Sapphire is a rich, navy blue with cool undertones and a pearly shimmer-sheen finish. The color payoff was mostly opaque, but the texture was firmer and too dense–it was harder to pick up color and diffuse it around the edges without the color looking draggy around the edges. It wore well for nine hours but stained slightly. Clinique Massively Midnight (P, $17.00) is brighter (95% similar). Chanel Metamorphose (44) #4 (LE, ) is less shimmery (95% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Cobalt Rush #3 (P, ) is lighter (95% similar). ColourPop Lucid Dream (LE, $6.00) is more shimmery, cooler (95% similar). NARS Dark Rite (P, $24.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). D712 Creme Brulee is a medium copper with warm undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. The pigmentation was fully opaque, while the consistency was soft, smooth, and blendable, despite having a moderate sparkle to it. I felt like most of the sparkle meshed with the base color, so there was very little fall out during application and almost none during the nine hours it wore for. Make Up For Ever D712 Crème Brûlée (P, $17.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Anastasia Glisten (P, $12.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). ME302 Peacock is a deep teal with warm, brownish undertones and a cooler overtone paired with a pearly sheen. The color coverage was opaque, but it could have been a bit truer-to-color. The texture was smooth, cream-like, but it was a bit denser than the permanent version, so it wasn’t quite as effortless to apply. It started to crease after nine hours of wear. ColourPop Water Me (LE, $6.00) is less shimmery, lighter, cooler (95% similar). Urban Decay Floss (LE, $19.00) is cooler (95% similar). Make Up For Ever ME302 Peacock (P, $17.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Coloured Raine Grandeur (LE, $6.99) is lighter (90% similar). LORAC Deep Teal (LE, $19.00) is darker, warmer (95% similar). ME912 Orchid is a bright, medium purple with warm, pink undertones and a pearly sheen. This is actually a blush, as it is not recommended use on the eyes. The texture was soft, smooth, dense but not stiff, and it blended out well on the cheeks as a blush. It wore well for nine hours on me. Urban Decay Fishnet (DC, $19.00) is more muted (95% similar). Make Up For Ever ME912 Orchid (P, $17.00) is cooler (95% similar). Sephora + Pantone Universe Radiant Orchid (LE, ) is more muted (95% similar). Always happy to see when MUFE gets good reviews, as on the whole I like the brand. However, this is a pass for me; only one of the shades interests me. Pretty container.
Yep, that’s how I feel – yay for quality but boo, the same ol’, same ol’!
Agreed on the same ol same ol. I would love to see another nudes palette from MUFE. Also not a fan of the tin packaging either.
It would be awesome if they varied their palettes up more!
They finally brought us a mate palette… Anything is possible! I have faith lol
Not understanding the thickness of that palette- — it almost looks like it’s designed to have storage underneath for brushes or mascara or the like.
You can remove the insert and reuse it later on, so you could depot the pans and reuse the tin right away!
Well in that case, it’s a good idea.
I think Orchid just got added to my Sephora sale wishlist
Nice! 🙂
The only one you don’t have already? I never think I have enough mufe, until they issue a new palette, and I realize I have to stick with trios to get something different. Kind of sad, actually.
While it definitely does appear to have many recycled shades, other than the black and white at the beginning, I don’t own any of the rest here. Weird, eh?
Sooo, I *might* get this. But it’s not in the must-have category of my wishlist as are Estee Edit, Nars Mind Games Set or UD Troublemaker.
Ahh! It must have been made with you in mind 😉
I don’t know, Christine…I think I still would much rather have that E.E. G&G 2-fer palette set! Although, I really do like Peacock and Orchid above. But that odd bulky case is a bit off-putting.
Up for mind games. Hope it doesn’t sell out instore, before the sale. It’s always OOS online. Swatched a few. Very nice.
Yes, same here, KJH. I’m a bit worried about that happening, because it is just a real home run type of set. Especially for anyone into high quality, darker shades of lipgloss or lg/ls hybrids.
This has several of my favorite colors in it — so of course I already have them! I’m curious about whether or not the pans come out with a magnet, though…
It makes sense to me that MUFE puts out this type of palette to try to get people to try the formula, but I wish they’d put out a second one with some more unusual shades for their die-hard fans (like me). Getting a new palette is just fun, and the quality on these shadows is almost always good — I’d love a new MUFE palette more than probably anything available this holiday season, but I don’t need this one!
I guess the upsides are 1) quality is pretty consistent with the permanent range and 2) they at least make it obvious they are repeats!
That’s a good point Christine! I’d rather see beautiful palettes that I pass on because I already have a bunch of shades than buying something presented as innovating.
Peacock is my favorite MUFE eyeshadow! Happy to see it featured in the palette.
It’s a pretty color!
I like they it’s same ol same ol cause I keep missing them lol.
Yay! 😀
I am so disappointed with MUFE ”s holiday palette this year :(. I only have S102 from the nude palette but the packaging is too bulky for my taste and the selection of colour really not inspiring. Last year palette was such a beauty… For this year it seems that they gathered a bunch of shadow, nothing more :(. Easy pass! I’ll wait for their next artist palette instead.
Totally understand – the tin is cute but bulky for traveling/storing 🙁
At least they leave the possibility to easily repurpose the tin! Can’t deny that it is a good thing ?
I like it … but I have most of these shades and Im not sure i can justify this. MUFE PLEASE MAKE PALETTES USING THE OUTER SHADES IN YOUR COLLECTION.
I hear ya, Jaz!
I don’t have many eyeshadows from MUFE, the ones I do have, I love. I’ve actually hit pan, and am almost out of one of them, matte white.
Depending on how much they are going to charge for this I might get it.
Wow! You have! That’s incredible — so awesome to see people finish their products 😀
And the single pans are tremendous. Good panning!
I surprised myself, to be honest, but I think I do go through white and very light beige eyeshadows rather quickly. The matte white from MUFE is my favourite base/blending eyeshadow of all times. I am going to repurchase, and that ardly ever happens.
Congratulations! Lol
I didn’t succeed to hit pan on any MUFE single… But I am working on it! It will be easier once I finally finish a pair of MUG I am working on ?.
A gorgeous palette if you don’t have any of those bright shades, but infinitely dupable.
Well said, Genevieve!
D712 CREME BRULEE is the only shade I don’t own or have a similar shade in MUFE so easy pass.
Definitely skippable!
Thanks for getting to this palette in time for the VIB Rouge sale. I’ve not tried many MUFE shadows so this palette will be perfect to start with. I’ve heard that they are great.
No problem!
I have most of these shades already, so I’ll pass. I really wish MUFE didn’t repeat colors so often, consider they don’t put out many palettes. This packaging seems too bulky to me. If I got this, I’d depot the shadows and use the tin for something else (that’s what a had to do with the artist case a couple years back).
I don’t know why they insist on repeating!
Weird. I’ve seen some other reviews where people said it had NO pigmentation and that the shade were super dry. So I’d crossed it off my list. But these swatches look beautiful! Not a fan of the yin though.
What shade, Maria?
I didn’t realise ME108 Steel and 302 Peacock were so stunning! Might have to buy singles, not impressed with the others. As you and others have said, it would be nice to have a palette from them with more exciting colours. If I see one more palette with a blue and/ or purple (on the purple side even like the Orchid above) – even though both of these are lovely- I think I’ll start tearing my hair out! Where’s all the lovely deep reds, wines, oranges? Something to get excited about! ⚡️Jet
