MAC Doo-Wop Lipstick
MAC Doo-Wop Lipstick ($18.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “pink pop.” It’s a bright, medium fuchsia-magenta with strong, blue undertones and a satin finish. It had mostly opaque color payoff with a lightly creamy consistency that glided across the lips without tugging or dragging. It lasted for five hours on me and left a stain behind. The formula was neither drying nor hydrating. Bite Beauty #007 (LE, $36.00) is darker, more muted (95% similar). Revlon Own It (P, $10.99) is more shimmery, warmer (95% similar). MAC Mind Control Lipstick ($18.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “bright cherry red.” It’s a bright, medium red with subtle, cool undertones and barely-there pearl. It had mostly opaque coverage, but there was a translucency to the color that gave it a lighter-weight appearance on (a little more like a stain). The texture was lightweight, emollient without being slippery, and comfortable to wear. On me, it wore for five and a half hours and left a stain behind. It was very lightly hydrating. Bite Beauty Tannin (DC, $24.00) is lighter (95% similar). Hourglass Innovator (P, $32.00) is warmer (95% similar). Bite Beauty Coulis (LE, $24.00) is lighter, more muted (95% similar). Estee Lauder Boldface (P, $32.00) is darker (95% similar). Cle de Peau Dragon Red (P, $65.00) is lighter, glossier (95% similar). Shiseido Ruby Copper (RD501) (DC, $28.00) is lighter (95% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Armie (LE, $36.00) is less shimmery, lighter, cooler (95% similar). MAC Como La Flor (LE, $19.00) is cooler (95% similar). Urban Decay Spiderweb (DC, $18.00) is lighter, brighter (95% similar). MAC Stunner (LE, $19.00) is lighter (90% similar). Make Up For Ever C404 (DC, $22.00) is less glossy (90% similar). Besame American Beauty 1945 (P, $22.00) is cooler (95% similar). Bite Beauty #009 (LE, $36.00) is cooler (95% similar). Chanel Rouge Tentation (169) (P, $45.00) is darker, more muted (90% similar). Givenchy Rouge Insomnie (12) (P, $34.00) is cooler (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Sonja (LE, $36.00) is less shimmery, lighter, cooler (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Ruby Rush (07) (P, $55.00) is lighter, brighter, warmer (90% similar). Bobbi Brown Imperial Red (DC, $37.00) is darker, glossier (90% similar). YSL Le Rouge (1) (PiP, $38.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). MAC Charlotte (LE, $19.00) is lighter (90% similar). Top 20 dupes listed, see the rest. MAC Whirl Lipstick ($18.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “dirty rose.” It’s a muted, medium-dark rosy brown with warm undertones and a satin finish. It had good pigmentation–almost opaque–with a creamy texture that applied without dragging. The consistency seemed more emollient than the last version of Whirl I tried (which had a more velvety feel). It caught a bit more in lip lines, especially after two hours of wear, though it lasted for four and a half hours overall. ColourPop WYD (DC, $6.50) is lighter (90% similar). Smashbox Safe Word (P, $21.00) is darker, cooler (85% similar). Urban Decay Bun Bun (LE, $18.00) is lighter, glossier (90% similar). NARS Get It On (P, $26.00) is cooler, less glossy (95% similar). Make Up For Ever C107 (DC, $22.00) is darker, cooler (90% similar). ColourPop Muneca (P, $5.00) is lighter, less pigmented, warmer (90% similar). Anastasia Staunch (P, $18.00) is darker, warmer (90% similar). Makeup Geek Waltz (LE, $12.00) is lighter, less glossy (95% similar). ColourPop Girl Gang (LE, $7.00) is darker, warmer (90% similar). Urban Decay Tame (DC, $18.00) is lighter (80% similar). Anastasia Hudson (LE, $20.00) is darker, less glossy (90% similar). MAC Story of Home (LE, $19.00) is lighter, cooler (85% similar). Maybelline Nude Nuance (P, $7.99) is darker, brighter, warmer (90% similar). Anastasia Latte (P, $18.00) is darker, cooler, less glossy (80% similar). MAC Double Shot (P, $19.00) is darker, glossier (90% similar). Pat McGrath 1995 (P, $38.00) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). Jaclyn Cosmetics Fussy (DC, $18.00) is lighter, cooler, glossier (85% similar). MAC Spirit (P, $19.00) is lighter, cooler, glossier (85% similar). KVD Beauty Lolita II (P, $20.00) is cooler (90% similar). ColourPop 951 (P, $7.00) is warmer (95% similar). Top 20 dupes listed, see the rest. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
MAC Witching Hour Lipstick ($18.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “rich purple.” It’s a bold, deep purple with cool undertones and a natural sheen. It had semi-opaque pigmentation with a moderately emollient texture that had slipped around slightly–and it applied unevenly with color gathering in lip lines. If it had less slip, I think it would apply better. It lasted for four hours and was neither hydrating nor drying on me. With a lip liner, I expect this to be workable. MAC Lust Extract (LE, $19.00) is more shimmery, darker (90% similar). Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Pagan (DC, $18.00) is darker (85% similar). MAC Punk Couture (P, $19.00) is lighter, warmer (80% similar). Smashbox Mongal (LE, $24.00) is less shimmery, warmer (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

I’ve been meaning to pick up Whirl. Now I can have one with limited edition packaging!
Yay! 🙂
Damn, I really like all of these. This may end up being an expensive collection for me.
Your poor wallet!
I’ll have to be very select. I’ll most likely skip Whirl and Mind Control, as I have dupes. We’ll see what the rest of the collection holds. I like the swatches I’ve seen of the purple gloss, so I’m sure I’ll at least get that and Witching Hour.
Let me be the first to say – I am calling this collection Broke Candy (for obvious reasons). I love all 4! I’m glad you mentioned liner for Witching Hour, although since I don’t have a good shade for that one, I was thinking maybe the UD Ozone.
Ozone might work!
YAY! For sure I want Doo-Wop. I think Whirl is just so close to the Finally Free and So Select (plus the Kat Von D Magick I just got) so I will probably pass on that. Mind Control is pretty nice but again…so many reds in my stash! I think Witching Hour would be fun to play with. I’m thinking base it out with Ozone and then maybe Bite Opal gloss over it or blend it with a lavender…
I’m really liking Whirl! I have to admit I don’t know who Brooke Candy is, I better do my research…
I feel so old, because I don’t recognize most celebrity names any more, lol!
I have absolutely no idea who she is either lol! But I like the packaging…hahaha
I’m liking all the colors but they seem pretty dupeable other than Witching Hour.
We have definitely see the other three in variations before!
How do you think Doo Wop compares to Kelly Yum Yum or Candy Yum Yum? Any Yum Yum, really.
Candy Yum Yum is brighter and lighter. Kelly Yum Yum is muchhh warmer!
I’m actually disappointed with Witching Hour, I was expecting it to be so much better, probably pass now
I totally understand, Nazma!
Hmm. Didn’t MAC release MInd Control & Witching hour not looking my ago? Or was it another darker shade? I had ordered both. I kept mind control. But, sent the darker one back. It was pretty bad. I even tried it with liner. It wasn’t the same lipstick here if it was named ” Witching Hour”Is this the same Mind Control? Am I completely losing it here ? Didn’t Mac release 2 of these not long ago?
Mind Control is a repromote, but I don’t think Witching Hour is a repromote. Whirl is permanent.
Ah! It must have been something different that was a dark/purple red color. It was pretty slippy even over a liner.
Yes, MAC brought out those 2 last year with Brooke Candy, they’ve teamed up again to do a larger collection. Here’s the promo poster from last year: http://www.theukfashionspot.co.uk/buzz-news/latest-news/632509-mac-brooke-candy-collection/
I knew I’d heard the name Brooke Candy before, this poster is why!
Christine, do you think it would be better to get this version of Whirl or the standard permanent version? I only have Whirl as a lip pencil and want to pick up the lipstick.
They feel veryyy close to me, so it’s whether you’re willing to pay extra for the packaging!
Wow, those are actually really pretty. I don’t know why, but I’m surprised I like them as much as I do.
That’s great! 😀
Christine! We’ve discussed lip pencils before and how much of a pain they are. I’m wondering about one again–will you be arm-swatching Witching Hour? It looks so promising; there are NO true purple lip pencils as far as I’ve seen since MAC discontinued Grape. They’re all too warm and pink or deep and red/brown.
I don’t think I received the lip pencil!
Ah, that’s too bad. Thanks for the quick reply, as always!
Helena, I haven’t bought them yet but several other readers have recommended the Sephora gel lip pencils ($12). I looked and it looks like they have one that might work – Dark Horse. Perhaps another reader that’s tried them can help you out with the shades, etc.
I swatched those pencils recently! Probably the most emollient lip liner I’ve ever tried. Unfortunately, Dark Horse is also too dark (I mean…) and warm. Very pretty, though; it would probably pair well with something like Rebel.
Yes. The Pink one is totally what I am loving. Need this at once.
In General I think it is a good Variation of colours, probably everyone will find a colour which fits.
True — it is a good variety!
Could Doo-Wop be more perfect?????
It is a pretty pink!
Whirl is really lovely, but matte lipsticks really dry my lips.
That’s a bummer, Lily! 🙁 Your poor lips!
Glad i waited on getting whirl. The special packaging is really pretty. I’ll also be getting witching hour. Thanks for the swatches and reviews ?
No problem, Janechemi! xo
None of these colours would really suit me or my style but I kinda really want them all except whirl!
Haha! Well, you can always admire them from afar 🙂
aw yes Witching Hour is SO CLOSE to Gunner, and I’ve been wishing for another tube of that!
Yay!
How similar is Doo Wop to Candy yum yum?
Candy Yum Yum is lighter + brighter.
Nice! Looks like this is going to be a great collection- I love MAC. Such a workhorse brand for me. All the colors look great on you Christine!
Thank you, Trish! Do you think you’ll be getting anything from this launch?
I have Whirl- (umm, somewhere) but I’ll go for all four because of the special packaging. Summer is great for a shade like Doo Wop- I’ll mute it a bit with a darker gloss, but I’ll get tons of wear out of these this year.
Whirl!! What a lovely colour and I thought it would look TOO warm on warmer skintones! I think I’d get it just for the packaging haha!
I think it should work on warm skin tones!
Ok, I admit I didn’t even know who Brooke Candy was until I googled her this morning, but that purple lippie is stunning, unique color, and the packaging is very pretty. It seems that purple lippies are a slippery bunch in general, but hoping it’s fixable with a lip liner. Will think about it….
They always seem to be more emollient than you’d expect!
Yep, even my TF Villain is! After kneading the container, it at least now goes on pigmented. But only lip primer & liner helped it stay PUT.
The only dark purples I have that don’t need liners and lip primer are MAC Blackened Plum and Bite Black Truffle. All the rest want to feather.
Ohhh~ I like Whirl and Witching Hour. So purdy! Brooke Candy is GORGEOUS in Grimes’s music video Genesis.
Witching Hour is so cool in theory!
I need to pick these up for the packaging. I don’t know what it is about it, but I’m in love. I’m not flipping over any of the colors except for whirl, so I don’t know… Do I buy a shade I don’t like so I can have the packaging in my collection area and buy a plain Whirl, or do I buy two Whirls? Oh, being a makeup addict is mighty odd.
Why not just one Whirl and see how it goes? Give it a… whirl? 😉
Beautiful shades, but this is not a collection I can get with. Besides, I have Maria Moretti from last summer, which is similar enough for me, plus So Select appears like a *slightly* pinker version of Whirl, perhaps. And TF Villain or CP So Wavy fill the purple void for me. And vivid blue-pinks make me look I’ll!
So Wavy is definitely purpley!
Whiiiiirl <3
It’s nice!
I’m really digging Mind Control. It’s a great red, and the formula is decently opaque considering how the more emollient formulas can sometimes behave.
MAC did a nice job on it!
I need Whirl! I haven’t bought it yet and this packaging is to die for!
Awesome!
I don’t understand the excitement? Pretty standard shades if you ask me :/ they finally have interesting packaging though!!! I do like witching hour but I already have stud by occ and villain by two faced ! ):
pah!
I think it’s the packaging 🙂
Is this Whirl the exact same as thee permanent shade of whirl lipsticklipstick?
Yes!
Christine how similar do you think whirl and Cp frick n frack are? I keep thinking of buying whirl n then im like is CP going to make a similar one ha!
Frick ‘n’ Frack is darker.
Mac also came out with the lipliner night crawler in the brooke candy collection. I recommend getting the lipliner with the lipstick witching hour! 🙂
Yay!
