Basic Bitch

MAC Basic Bitch MAC Girls Personality Palette ($39.50 for TBA oz.) is a smoky set of shades that includes eight eyeshadows and one highlighter. The palette features a new eyeshadow formula with four finishes–Satin Shine, Smooth Pearl, Foiled Shadow, and Creamy Matte–that are supposed to have a “creamy, silky texture with superior colour payoff” along with a powder highlighter that’s described as “lightweight” and has “just the right amount of pearl and pop.”

Overall, the formula isn’t night and day from the brand’s standard powder eyeshadow (and did not seem like they reinvented powder eyeshadow!), but it was noticeably softer, more finely-milled, and the Foiled finishes were denser and very sparkly–almost like an amped up take on their Lustre eyeshadows. The Creamy Matte finish seemed to have more pigmentation and blendability than of the brand’s firmer mattes have had. Unfortunately, the quality of each shade varied enough that it was not a slam dunk formulation, but I liked the direction of the formula but would like to see better consistency.

Sly Girl

Sly Girl is a medium-dark purple with neutral-to-warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It was richly pigmented with a creamy, moderately dense texture that yielded strong color and intense shimmer. There was slight fallout over time but most of it stayed on well for eight hours on me.

Me Me Me

Me Me Me is a bright white with neutral-to-cool undertones and a satin sheen. It had good pigmentation, which was buildable to full coverage, paired with a soft, velvety texture that wasn’t too thick or too thin to the toch. The eyesahdow wore well for seven and a half hours on me.

Tattle-Tale

Tattle-tale is a cool, silvery lavender with warmer pink and silver sparkle. It had medium pigmentation, which did not improve substantially when used with a dampened brush. The texture was more sparkly compared to Sly Girl, so there were some stray sparkles that dropped as I blended out the color and later on during wear. It lasted for seven and a half hours on me.

Hell in Heels

Hell in Heels is a subdued, deep plum with subtle, warm undertones and a satin finish. There was such a faint sheen that it looked more like a matte in practice, but it had more of the blendability of a satin or pearl finish–just easier to use without adding a lot of shine. It had good color coverage in a single layer, and the color was blendable along the edges. This shade stayed on well for eight hours.

Ms. Personality

Ms. Personality is a dirty, golden taupe with warm undertones and a pearly sheen. It almost seemed like a duochrome to me, but it did not really shift so much as it had more contrasting shimmer compared to the base color. It had medium coverage, which was buildable to semi-opaque coverage with two to three layers. The texture was slightly dusty, though it blended well and adhered better than I expected. The eyesahdow lasted for seven and a half hours on me.

Big White Lie

Big White Lie is a dark taupe with neutral-to-wamr undertones and a mostly matte finish. It had nearly opaque pigmentation paired with a soft, velvety texture that had slight powderiness in the pan but applied evenly and smoothly to the lid. This shade wore well for eight hours on me.

Text Me Later

Text Me Later is a dark, bluish gray with a satin finish. It had sheer coverage with a very dusty, thin consistency that made it difficult to use, as so little of it stuck to the lid and there was no building up the coverage. It wore well for six hours on me–from what I could tell.

Gameplayer

Gameplayer is a dark black with cool undertones and a mostly matte finish. It had good color payoff that was buildable to opaque coverage in two to three layers. The consistency was smooth, slightly denser, and almost cream-like as it was not powdery but still blended out well on the lid. This shade wore well for seven and a half hours on me.

Love This Bitch

Love This Bitch is a pale, pinkish white base with warmer, pale gold pearl. It had semi-sheer coverage, which was difficult to build up, so it was typically a more subtle to moderate highlighter. I felt like it applied better to the skin and blended out than when I just swatched it on my arm. The texture felt very smooth, but it was dense and thin, so I had to use a heavier hand and/or denser brush to get product to transfer onto the brush and then onto my skin. The highlighter wore well for seven and a half hours on me.

This was the color story that I most related to although not happy with some of the names, of course. Sly Girl, Hell on Heels and Text Me were the colors I was most interested in so not happy that one of them got an F and couldn’t really be worked with. Need to decide if having all the shades in one place would be worth the purchase.

I bought this when it came out and love it, I did 3 looks with it so far, and the MAC artist did one on me the day I purchased it. I do use primer all the time, and used Fix+ with TattleTale and it was stunning. One look was Sly Girl on the lid and Hell on Heels through the crease for a smoky eye ans it was stunning. I actually returned a Viseart palette (Dark Mattes) because I couldn’t get that to work for me at all, but got consistently great looks out of this one. I have Mischief Minx as well and it’s hard to say which one I love more.

Hate the name, love the palette. Oh boy. Might have to get something to stick over that terminology, because there is nothing “basic” about this ?! Nor would I think of these mostly gorgeous shades as “basic”, either.
The shades themselves with the lone exception of Text Me Later, are really lovely for a decidedly different take on a smokey eye!

OMG, my palette is much better than yours with the exception of the highlighter. (Posted my swatches this morning.) All of my shadows are really, really good. My highlighter is pitiful though. I’ll probably use it over a matte or something bc it barely shows as a highlighter. I like what you did with the eye look. I may copy it on Friday (giving you credit of course!) Thanks for your review.

I’m still shocked MAC actually came out with a palette called Basic Bitch LOL! Totally would have expected this from Urban Decay or something. I’m not gonna lie, though. I’m amused lol. I just wish they delivered a little more with the quality. You can’t come out the gates swinging with a bold name like Basic Bitch and then fall flat. Lame!

Oooh, a new MAC shadow formula???? About time! I feel like MAC’s traditional powder formula hasn’t kept up with the times, so I’m intrigued, this sounds very promising. Love the stormy eye look you did!

Name issues aside, there are a few nice shades in here but none of them is so unusual that most of us won’t have dupes already (and here’s a situation that raises that question, “which is the dupe”?). And some of the mediocre ratings are pretty disappointing. So I’ll be checking my stash for better quality “dupes”.

Sorry, Christine, when I first read this review there weren’t any comments and I thought it was being frozen out because of the name of the palette. I am considering two other palettes from this collection but am still waffling. Great review and swatches-looks great on you.

Genevieve Avatar

I really don’t care for the name of this palette or for some of the names of the shadows – I just wish brands would grow up and not use offensive names for their products. Rant over.
This is a mixed bag and it’s a shame that some of the shades are so woeful, otherwise it would have been quite a lovely, cohesive palette.
Beautiful eye look Christine.

I bought this despite the troublesome shades. Mine arrived on Wednesday night. Yesterday, I wore a simple look from the palette and I totally love it. Bonus: It is quite neutral in tone!. Sly Girl is ungh..phenomenal! Also love Hell in Heels. Wore a base of the highlighter on lid, inner corner Tattle Tale (used your studio fix trick to get better adherence), Sly Girl on 2/3 lid and bottom lash line, added Hell in Heels for definition in crease and blended a bit with Sly Girl. It was stunning. Added a silver glitter pencil by ABH on inner 2/3 lashline bottom and top.

Glad I picked it up.

I love how you used these shadows. My palette arrived today and I would like to try and duplicate your look as well as I can, which won’t be very well, but you have to start somewhere. Can you please share what you did? Thanks!

Laurie Avatar

Thanks. I tried to look for it, but I’m glad I posted because the look was really lovely. These swatched less well than they actually looked on my eyes.

I stopped at the MAC counters while at Macy’s today (as usual) and noticed the tester display for these palettes, and that there was no tester for Basic Bitch. The MAC associate told me that this particular Macy’s doesn’t carry it because of the name. I questioned her and she insisted this was true. Seems odd…what do you think?
