Kat Von D Magick Studded Kiss Lipstick
Kat Von D Magick Studded Kiss Lipstick ($21.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “sweet dusty pink.” It’s a lightly brightened, light-medium rosy pink with subtle, warm undertones and very fine shimmer. It had mostly opaque pigmentation with creamy texture that glided across lips easily. It was much thicker and creamier compared to the Studded Kiss shades I tried when they first launched. The color wore for six hours and was just a touch drying after four hours of wear. Urban Decay Backtalk (DC, $22.00) is more muted, cooler (95% similar). Urban Decay Criminal (DC, $18.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). Milani Lust (LE, $8.99) is warmer, less glossy (90% similar). ColourPop Solow (DC, $6.50) is lighter, less glossy (90% similar). Kat Von D Tijuana Studded Kiss Lipstick ($21.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “vibrant Spanish red.” It’s a bright, medium red with neutral-to-cool undertones. I see pink in the base when I sheer it out, but it pulls closer to neutral to warm against my skin tone. The texture is lightweight and comfortable to wear for the first five hours, and then it gets a little drying after that but wears closer to eight hours. It applies evenly and smoothly without dragging, though it isn’t quite as creamy as a shade like Magick, it is a lot easier to apply than the original Studded Kiss line was for me. KVD Beauty Outlaw (P, $20.00) is lighter, brighter (95% similar). MAC Steam Heat (LE, $19.00) is lighter, more muted (95% similar). ColourPop Silhouette (LE, $6.50) is lighter (95% similar). Sephora Always Red (PiP, $14.00) is cooler (95% similar). MAC Leading Lady Red (LE, $18.00) is cooler (90% similar). Milani Desire (LE, $8.99) is cooler, less glossy (90% similar). Dior 999 Matte (999) (P, $35.00) is brighter, warmer (90% similar). Bite Beauty Candied Maple (LE, $24.00) is brighter, warmer, glossier (90% similar). Make Up For Ever Red Ink (LE, ) is darker, cooler (90% similar). MAC Ruby (LE, $19.00) is lighter, glossier (90% similar). MAC Reddy to Go (P, $20.00) is darker (90% similar). Anastasia Ruby (P, $18.00) is darker (90% similar). MAC Tenor Voice (LE, $19.00) is lighter, brighter (90% similar). MAC Starlett Scarlet (LE, $18.00) is lighter (90% similar). NARS Riot (LE, $27.00) is darker, warmer (90% similar). MAC Just Add Romance (P, $20.00) is lighter (90% similar). KVD Beauty Santa Sangre (LE, $19.00) is cooler (90% similar). Urban Decay 714 (DC, $18.00) is lighter, cooler (95% similar). Guerlain #24 (P, $33.00) is darker (90% similar). Maybelline Siren in Scarlet (P, $7.99) is lighter, brighter (90% similar). Kat Von D Mercy Studded Kiss Lipstick ($21.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as “romantic garnet berry.” It’s a muted, medium-dark plum with soft, warm undertones and violet and pink pearl. It had semi-opaque pigmentation with a lightly creamy consistency where I did feel some of the shimmer particles, but it wasn’t rough or painful to use. The finish is more of a frosted satin then matte, though it becomes more matte after a few hours of wear. On me, it lasted for seven hours and was a little drying after the fifth hour of wear with a little bit of settling into lip lines, but it is creamy enough that it can be smoothed out by rubbing your lips together for the most part. Too Faced Ursula (DC, $22.00) is more shimmery, cooler (90% similar). MAC Approaching Storm (LE, $18.00) is more muted, less pigmented, glossier (90% similar). MAC On and On (P, $19.00) is glossier (90% similar). NYX Biker Babe (P, $7.50) is cooler (90% similar). Sephora Voluptuous Burgundy (58) (P, $14.00) is darker (85% similar). Bite Beauty Molten Chocolate (P, $24.00) is less shimmery, darker (85% similar). Bite Beauty Plum (LE, $24.00) is less shimmery, lighter, glossier (85% similar). Ciate Forbidden (P, $19.00) is darker, cooler (85% similar). Revlon Black Cherry (P, $8.49) is less shimmery, darker, cooler (85% similar). MAC Fixed on Drama (LE, $19.00) is less shimmery, warmer (85% similar). Anastasia Phantom (LE, $20.00) is darker (90% similar). Urban Decay Mirana (LE, $18.00) is less shimmery, darker, cooler (85% similar). ColourPop Nimbus (LE, $6.00)(80% similar). Anastasia Chrome Burgundy (LE, $20.00) is more shimmery, darker (80% similar). NARS Heroine Red (P, $26.00) is less shimmery, darker, warmer (80% similar). MAC Crowned (LE, $21.00) is darker, cooler (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
FORMULA SUMMARY | Kat Von D Studded Kiss Lipstick ($21.00 for 0.10 oz.) is supposed to have “bold color” with “long-lasting wear and luxe comfort.” I reviewed several of these shades when they were first released, and a lot of them were so dry that they were stiff to the point of dragging, tugging, and were nearly painful to apply, though not all. I was completely surprised by the recent release of new shades (all permanent), as many of them were surprisingly creamy, comfortable to apply, and really felt like a major departure from a lot of the ones I had tried from the initial release. They are fairly pigmented, long-wearing, and vary from not drying to slightly drying.

This more recent set of Studded Kiss lippies seem to be performing much nicer than the last round. I am really digging Mercy, especially with all that shimmer! It seems like a great fall shade for a glitter addict like me!
They really are!
Oooh, I like Magick-it’s a pink I can pull off. And Mercy is stunning! I have a lot of plum and berry lipsticks, but none with so much shimmer.
Mercy is a nice shade!
I literally gasped at Magick! Lol. I love them all though. Tijauna, though I have a ton of bright reds, it just is so gorgeous. Mercy is just flat out beautiful.I love how she made even everyday colors unique with the shimmer, etc. So far,If have gotten Chula only. But, I have a feeling this line is going to become one that I love and want like every shade. I don’t know if I dare compare the quality to Nars audacious(i wish). But, it’s like I can never have enough of them!
I’m definitely going to have to brave the original shades and try another, I think!
Oh,that would be super! I’d love to see if Lovecraft got a makeover!
I don’t own any studded kiss lipsticks but Magick is calling my name especially now since it got such a high rating.
It’s a nice one!
Oh my, Magick looks beautiful. I love the slight shimmer!
It’s pretty!
Magick looks very similar to UD Backtalk — if I were to get just one of those two, which one would you recommend?
I prefer UD’s formula.
Thanks!
This is wonderful news for me, although terrible for my wallet! I’m happy to see the ones I was really wanting (Magick especially) look great 🙂
I wonder, is Urban Decay’s new matte Backtalk similar to Magick? In the ‘compare two swatches’ feature they look pretty darn similart
Yes, it is similar! I don’t know why it isn’t showing up in the list?
Your eyeshadow combination is beyond gorgeous in these photos- what are you wearing?
Everything is listed under “The Makeup Look”!
Hi Christine- Thank you for all of your thorough and honest reviews.
I am really enjoying the aesthetic of the new site, but it is extremely difficult to use on mobile. I follow you on Facebook and click on your posts to come to your website. The Ad at the bottom of the page makes scrolling difficult and it sort of follows you up the page with each scroll.
Hi Aj,
Does it have an X on it?
Mine has an x but it never goes away, or it will seem to, but reappears as soon as I scroll again.
Ooh Merci is beautiful! Did you have an issue with the shimmer particles navigating outside your lip area or where the color fades but you still see chunky shimmer particles on your lips?
I didn’t have an issue with the shimmer traveling!
Oooh I love Mercy!
Happy to hear it!
I was trying to compare Mercy to OCC Black Metal Dahlia, but in the swatch gallery (and in searching reviews too) any time I try to find a product where the first word in the name is “black” the only product that shows is Black Up matifying foundation.
Will look in that!

Thank you!
I am pleasantly surprised to find that Magick has for its many dupes, shades that I have been really wanting, like ColourPop Solow, UD Backtalk or MAC Mehr or Nars Anna!!!
Also very glad that the Studded Kisses formula got a makeover, because that first batch? Made me go “OWCH” when I saw what it did to your lips!
So many of the original range were downright painful to apply, let alone test!
I’m so glad they changed the formula for the better. The first round felt rushed, like they just wanted to put something out quickly for the holidays. It shows Kat Von D wants to be on par with the higher end brands and not just a passing fad. I hope they keep up with the quality in their up coming releases.
Fingers crossed!
I haven’t gotten Wolvesmouth yet, and now Mercy comes out. I thought they were similar but I can see Wolvesmouth is much more berry than burgundy. I want them both, they look so sparkly in the tube.
I love those frosted mattes!
Is it bad that I look at the reviews of these and think, “Huh, I guess they read Christine’s reviews and took them to heart,” because these seem to perform so much better than the initial launch. That initial launch was just, gahh, I can’t even put it into words. I’m glad these are better. I might even purchase one now!
After trying half a dozen from the original launch, it was like a million balloons were deflated. These are almost enough to convince me to try one of the original shades to see if they actually went back and reformulated the whole range.
All three are lovely, but I think Mercy is gorgeous! I’ve just begun switching my buying mindset from summer to fall, and I think that’d be a stunning shade. I really like Magick too but I’m not crazy about the slight shimmer in that shade for some reason, so I might take a glance at MAC Mehr next time I’m in the store, since I’ve been interested in that shade in the past!
I feel like Mercy is the sleeper hit!
Oh, the shades are beautiful. So glad to hear that the formula has been improved since the original launch. I love Magick & Tijuana. Wish I could wear Mercy, so interesting looking
I bet you could 😉
I love magic, what a pretty colour!!
Yay!
Mercy is breath-taking. <3
It’s a nice one!
Love and adore that Mercy lipstick – the Tijuana colour is very pretty too. Both of these look great on you – but I LOVE Mercy!
Aw, thanks a lot, Genevieve!
Mercy is so, so tempting! Am I willing to purchase a lipstick that’s a little drying? Hmmm… maybe. Does anyone reading this know of a truly moisturizing lip primer? Such a thing would definitely enable me to wear some of these amazing colors that have a tendency to be drying.
Haha, that is the question, isn’t it? Sometimes applying lip balm prior is helpful without compromising wear time too much, otherwise I’d just apply a little balm or gloss after 4-6 hours 🙂
I wear matte lipsticks almost every day, and what I do is I use the Bite Agave lip mask each night and then wipe off whatever residue is left in the morning. When I take off the lipstick in the evening I immediately put a layer of the mask on. It’s too thick to wear underneath a lipstick but it’s great as a night treatment.
Yeah, that’s what I’ve been doing and it does help with some of my lipsticks but not all. Maybe a lot of the lipsticks I own are really notorious for drying the lips out but I had no way of knowing that when I bought them because I hadn’t discovered Temptalia yet! Now, I read your reviews and do my research before making most of my purchases. So… yeah… you’re amazingly helpful and my face and lips are incredibly grateful! =)
I use MAC Prep & Prime for dry lipsticks, but even better is this other lip product I’ve tried out at MAC, it’s in a squeeze tube. Lip Conditioner, I think it’s called? I put a little bit on, rub it in, wait a minute, genty blot, then do up my lips. Seems not to affect wear as long as I don’t use too much and blot!
Thanks for the suggestion! I wonder if the girls at the MAC counter will give me a sample the next time I stop by? I guess there’s only one way to find out! =) It would be nice to have something that wouldn’t alter the wear-time, which is an issue I’ve been facing with other products.
Wow, all of these are gorgeous!
They are!
My lust for Magick is cemented. It’s going in the cart. Hehe. Loving the fact that the formula on these seems betters. They are beautiful.
Enjoy it, Kimmy!
They are all nice but I can’t see myself pulling off anything nut Mercy from that group.
Aw!
