ColourPop Chi Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick
ColourPop Chi Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick ($6.00 for 0.11 fl. oz.) is described as a “cool-toned nude beige.” It’s a muted, medium brown with subtle, neutral-to-cool undertones and a slight rosy tint. It had a matte finish with rich, opaque coverage that applied evenly and smoothly. It dried down to a transfer-free finish, but it wasn’t as flat/pure matte as a lot of liquid lipsticks can be. It tended to stretch and show lip lines when I smiled, though the color itself lasted for six hours before fading. It was slightly drying. Kaleidos Echo Valley (P, $12.00) is less shimmery, cooler (95% similar). MAC Styled in Sepia (LE, $19.00) is darker, glossier (90% similar). MAC Easy Babe (LE, $19.00) is cooler (90% similar). Anastasia Starfish (P, $20.00) is cooler (90% similar). Maybelline Carnal Brown (P, $7.49) is darker (85% similar). Anastasia Dread (P, $18.00) is cooler (85% similar). ColourPop Kae Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick ($6.00 for 0.11 fl. oz.) is described as a “deep warm yellow brown.” It’s a muted, dark brown with warm, reddish tones and a matte finish. The consistency was thin and runny but applied fairly smoothly and evenly. It dried down fairly quickly and tended to emphasize lip lines when I smiled or stretched my lips at all. The color faded a little more noticeably from the center of the lips, though most of the color was intact after seven horus of wear. This shade was moderately drying on me. ColourPop Limbo (DC, $6.50) is darker, cooler (90% similar). Anastasia Maude (P, $20.00) is darker (90% similar). KVD Beauty Hilda (LE, $20.00) is lighter (90% similar). ColourPop Good Times (LE, $7.00) is darker, cooler (90% similar). NYX Maison (P, $6.00) is cooler (90% similar). Too Faced Naughty by Nature (P, $21.00) is cooler (90% similar). Maybelline Coffee Addiction (DC, $7.49) is cooler, glossier (90% similar). Anastasia Malt (P, $20.00) is darker, cooler (85% similar). Tarte Crop Top (P, $20.00) is lighter, glossier (85% similar). Sephora Spice (P, $14.00) is darker, cooler (85% similar). ColourPop Cinnamon (LE, $10.00) is lighter (85% similar). Anastasia Bittersweet (LE, $20.00) is cooler (85% similar). ColourPop Rooch Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick ($6.00 for 0.11 fl. oz.) is described as a “deepened russet wine.” It’s a dark, burgundy red with warm undertones and a matte finish. It reflects almost copper at times (I noticed this even in person; it’s an effect that seems heightened by camera but I noted it as I watched it dry down before seeing the photos for once!), even though it doesn’t seem shimmery. This one dried down unevenly with some parts of it drying down surprisingly quickly while other areas seemed to take longer to fully dry down. The texture was drier, not smooth to the touch, and flaked away and faded heavily from the center of the mouth. It was pretty drying over the six and a half hours it lasted. KVD Beauty Vampira (P, $20.00) is cooler (95% similar). ColourPop And Chill (DC, $6.50) is cooler (90% similar). Pat McGrath McMenamy (LE, $38.00) is cooler (85% similar). MAC Deep Love (LE, $19.00) is darker, cooler, glossier (85% similar). ColourPop Prim (P, $7.00) is cooler, glossier (85% similar). Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Anita (DC, $18.00) is darker, cooler, glossier (85% similar). Milani Crush (LE, $8.99) is lighter, warmer (80% similar). Nooo I’m sad Rooch got a C it was on my wishlist! Though I guess I shouldn’t be too disappointed since I have Vampira and they look really close.
Vampira is crazyyy close!!
they look terrible up close! not moisturizing at all. im suprised you gave them such a high grade. glad i saw this before buying
They don’t claim to be moisturizing, so they don’t lose points for not being moisturizing – they do lose points for being drying, though, to the extent that they are (Chi was slightly drying for example). They are very pigmented and long-wearing, which are two characteristics that will tend to keep a rating higher, even if it’s drying. We all have deal-breakers, but I try to keep ratings as objective as possible by keeping to what the brand says it should do and going from there. Some will accept a drying product if it wears a long time while others categorically refuse 🙂
Happy others love this stuff! I totes do not. Never.
Totally understand! Liquid lipstick is definitely not for everyone.
With you. I’ve thrown out the few I purchased. Must have been medicated thinking they could possibly work.
Painful laughter. ?
Too bad Rooch doesn’t perform well because the faint copper sheen is really beautiful!
I wish it was smoother on!
Hi Lulu! Pat copper bronze shimmer pigment or shadow onto lipstick with similar base! Confident you could duplicate it. 🙂
I do this all the time either with a color or a highlight, works great. If you have prominent lip lines smile a bit to smooth them out first though or it will “skip” those and accentuate them.
It’s a shame Rooch turned out to be disappointing! It was the most interesting color to me. I really like that different copper “shift.” I’m hoping the new Satin Lips they’re launching will be more forgiving to wear.
(Also as a heads up, not sure if you saw Christine: Bite just announced that their new lipsticks are launching 2/23, but they’re already up on the website to buy for VIB Rouges! I think I’ll be taking a risk & picking one or two up….)
Hopefully they will be! I like some of the Ultra Mattes but then some are hard to wear (like Rooch)!
Even though liquid matte lipsticks don’t get along with my lips, I really love Rooch!!! What a gorgeous shade! Definitely see the strong copper reflects. I do own MAC Deep Love, so I may add a touch of a coppery lipstick to it to get that gorgeousness!
The other 2 shades just aren’t “moving” me in any direction, although Chi looks a bit more interesting.
It’s really odd how the color gets caught in the light!
I think that Rooch would look terrific on you. Esp. Adding the copper. Remember to heavy balm your lips (thanks, Lisa E.) at the beginning of your app. At least 20 min before the liquid. Worked for me w/KVD, and I had given away a full size Outlaw, which I loved. Without the balm, the lips felt shrink wrapped and looked like skinny Man Ray lips. Not nice. W/ pre-balm, I can wear liquids with fair to good comfort. And it does not interfere with the matte, if you put it on way ahead. Go for it. Love that shade family. Got Anita, so I don’t need it. Maybe I’ll try something coppery over Anita. Good idea.
It’s so crazy how different a color can pull on different people – Chi looks suuuuuuuper cool/gray-toned on me; it reminds me of Anastasia’s Sepia. These colors all look great on you 🙂
Oh, nice! I wish it was a little cooler on me!
I was thinking the same thing, on me Chi is definitely significantly cooler in tone.
Isn’t that crazy? It always makes me wonder if there was some variance in different batches of product, or if skin undertones can really make *that* much of a difference all by themselves!
I’m not a fan of ultra matte liquid lipsticks, but I like the Rooch color, too bad the formula is so problematic, but I will grab the matching lip pencil. Also not a big fan of Karreuche but I have to say, she picked some beautiful, well-coordinated colors for shadows, blushes, highlighters, and lipsticks in her collaboration with Colour Pop
The lip pencil is a great way to get the color without the fuss of liquid! 🙂
You look very uncomfortable in these pictures.
I’m sorry that I look that way, as I wasn’t uncomfortable at all!
You look totally fine in these pictures! Gorgeous as always, rocking some awesome makeup.
The Kae eyeshadow quad looks awesome here! I’m really digging the copper-tint to Roach…for $6, I’m willing to give it a try!
How weird: my impression too; particularly top photo. I stopped and studied it for a couple of extra seconds while I was scrolling through the post. Sorry Christine. No offense meant whatsoever. 😀
Sorry again!
Glad it’s not just me. I thought maybe it was the eyeshadow comboed with the lips. Christine, you look super happy in a different post wearing this same eye shadow. Just my interpretation of a moment. No worries! Still love you and I really like that eyeshadow on you.
I feel really terrible, since if I don’t look normal, then it must have been my fault and it is a true disservice to readers and the products. I will try to reshoot these photos if I have time this week. I feel just awful. I’m so sorry again everyone! I didn’t see anything wrong with them when I edited, but it’s obvious that there is now.
I think you look the same as always. I keep scrolling back up to see if I missed something, and I honestly can’t see anything wrong. I definitely don’t think you need to feel bad or reshoot anything. You look lovely!
Rooch is such an intriguing colour! I won’t be getting any of the ultra matte liquid lipsticks, they’re not my thing but I like seeing how the colours do!
It’s always fun to browse ;D
I love the subtle pearl in Rooch. Too bad it didn’t perform better. I could see that being spectacular!
I hear ya, Erin!
These look so dry! ): I was hoping they’d keep the Stingraye formula and apply it to new releases, but I’ve heard that these are more drying than even the original formula and this confirms it. Sad day. I didn’t expect Kae to be so close to Limbo either! At least I can confidently pass on these.
Have you received/bought the eyeshadow release too? I’ve been eyeing Sunset Boulevard and your review might be the make-or-break for me.
It’s strange, because I feel like the newer ones have been consistently… new? better? in the vein of Stingraye, but these feel like they went backwards, which is just weird.
I’ll never be into this ultra matte lip trend. Satin finish is as matte as I can go! I like Bite matte lip crayons but they don’t look painful (or feel painful!) as these look! Dry and crumbly is just not attractive.
I totally understand, Dione!
Rooch is such a unique shade, especially for a matte liquid lipstick…I’m sorry it didn’t perform better!
Same here, Toni! I thought they would be more comfortable, as a lot of the newer liquid lipsticks from ColourPop have a better feel/look at dry down, but these seemed off.
For you gals that don’t like ultra mattes you might like what’s coming out next week, the 25th. Ultra satins, long wearing but not matte. The colors are beautiful! I hope you get a chance to review those christine.
I will try to purchase when they launch, but it’ll depend when they go live and if they sell out before I get to them. I’m sorry in advance if I fail you, Trina!
Oh no please don’t be sorry 🙂 i know it’s not always easy to certain things. I’m actually kinda shocked they didn’t send you one of those PR sets. You should of been top on the list! You are the best reviewer/tester! Thank you in advance for trying.
No worries! I believe ColourPop has a rotating list so they can send out samples to more people overall but not everyone gets every single launch (I think it’s a good way to spread the love!). They’re usually very nice if I ask specifically for something, but I feel bad asking sometimes!
I want to try them. The reviews I’ve seen on YouTube make them sound like a more mousse-like texture, which I prefer with liquid lipsticks.
the copper reflects in rooch looks beautiful , but i think i’m done with their ultra matte lips .
i feel like i have enough & the formula of the new shades aren’t quite as nice as the original release of limbo & tulle .
speaking of colourpop , will you be reviewing the new ultra satin lips ? those look very promising & i love the shade range .
I will try to purchase them when they go on sale, but I don’t have them now. I’m at the mercy of however the release goes down!
looking forward to the review .
thanks , christine !
Rooch is such a good color, but the formula itself is disappointing. Thank goodness there are dupes!
It really was!!
All a bit too deep brown for me I’m afraid.
Gotcha!
I love how Chi looks on you!
Thank you!
The ulta-matte finish still doesn’t appeal to me. Roach is an interesting color, though, with its coppery reflects!
Your swatches are the only ones that I’ve seen were Rooch has slightly golden sheen to it. Make me want to order it!
Liquid lipsticks can be drying but I can live with them when they wear forever and I find that to be the case with ColourPop. I love all of these shades. Especially Rooch. I’m a little disappointed that it doesn’t perform as well but I still want it lol. That coppery shift is just gorgeous. I will tape a lip balm to my forehead if need be LOL!
I just got Rooch in the mail last week and I sadly have the same issues with that weird mustardy cast and the crumbly texture. So disappointing, it is such a gorgeous color. I haven’t had that experience with any of their other shades.
I need Chi and Rooch in my life. With backups!! I don’t wear red (or any variation or tone of it) hardly ever anymore but Rooch is gorgeous thanks to that copper, I might have to grab that one too.
Hey Christine, do you have the matching liners for these? If so, how closely color-matched are Chi and Chi? :p TIA!
I do, but I don’t have them photographed or swatched (they are in their boxes, as I’m not very good at getting around to reviewing lip pencils), unfortunately! 🙁
I figured as much, since pencils are such a pain in the lips to swatch and review. Thanks for the quick response 😀
They are! I have been considering maybe just swatching on skin (but not lips) and posting that way. There are usually too many lipsticks/glosses to swatch that I don’t want to burn out my lips on three lip pencils, lol!
Seems like a good enough compromise–it’s how us mere mortals swatch things, anyway. 😉 You’re too prolific to let pencils slow you down!
Thanks for the input, Helena 🙂 I struggle between the “I want to do it right/all/complete” part of me and the “But a skin swatch is better than nothing!!!!”
