Eternals

Urban Decay Eternals Marvel Studios Eyeshadow Palette ($65.00 for 0.45 oz.) is a new, limited edition eyeshadow palette for the holiday season that included seven (mostly) matte shades complemented by eight shimmery shades. I found the quality to be all over the place, but oddly, the mattes were harder to blend out; sometimes Urban Decay’s matte eyeshadows are powdery, but they tend to blend out fine, so it was unexpected. The shimmers tended to be drier or sheerer and would be more usable for someone who always uses their shimmer eyeshadows wet.

In a way, it’s exactly what I feel like I’ve come to expect from Urban Decay’s eyeshadow palettes these days but that’s still a little tough to accept at times.

Cosmic Blast

Cosmic Blast is a bright beige with warmer, yellowy undertones and a metallic finish. It had mostly opaque color coverage paired with a moderately dense, slightly stiffer texture. It stayed on nicely for seven and a half hours before fading visibly.

Formula Overview

$19.00/0.06 oz. - $316.67 Per Ounce

The formula is supposed to have "high-pigment" with "ultra-smooth color payoff with maximum blendability" while being long-wearing. The brand is confusing, as they claim "up to 12 hours."

The majority of the shades I tested were pigmented--semi-opaque to opaque--with the matte finish having the most variance. The lighter matte shades tended to be thinner, more powdery, and sheerer as a result of those texture differences. The more satin-to-pearl shimmer shades tended to be thinner, too, and they sometimes applied more unevenly or had to be built up. The higher-sheen shimmer shades tended to be pigmented, lightly creamy, and blendable with good adhesion.

They wore between eight and nine hours on average, which is solid wear time but similar to a lot of other powder eyeshadows for me, so it wasn't extra long-wearing in context.

In comparison to the last iteration of the brand's eyeshadow formula, it did not feel vastly different. The mattes seemed a little thinner and a touch more powdery, while the shimmers were a touch thicker on average with some of the more pearl-like finishes having weaker coverage and felt too firmly-pressed into the pan and looked thinner on, so they weren't as flattering to wear.

Family is Eternal

Family is Eternal is a light, pinky-coral base with lighter gold shimmer throughout. The texture was firmer in the pan, not so much dense as it was drier. It had mostly opaque color payoff that applied fairly evenly to bare skin but had light fallout during application. This shade lasted decently for seven and a half hours fading a bit.

Immortal Warrior

Immortal Warrior is a light gold with moderate, warm undertones and a sparkling finish. The texture felt drier and stiffer to the touch, which made it harder to pick up product evenly with a brush and led to fallout during application. It had semi-opaque pigmentation that was best applied with a fingertip or a dampened brush. It wore well for seven hours before fading noticeably.

In the Shadows

In the Shadows is a deep black with subtle, warm undertones and contrasting gold micro-sparkle over a matte finish. It had a stiffer, thinner texture that was really hard to blend out. I had to pat it into place and then pick up more product each time to continue applying the color to an area as it wouldn’t spread at all. The eyeshadow had opaque pigmentation and lasted well for seven hours and had moderate fallout over time.

Devotion

Devotion is a light peachy-brown with warm, more orange undertones and a matte finish. The consistency was drier, thinner, and somewhat powdery, which made it more prone to applying unevenly to bare skin or over anything with tackiness/natural slip (e.g. oils on my skin). It had semi-opaque, buildable pigmentation that wore well for seven hours before fading noticeably.

Astrolabe

Astrolabe is a medium, warmer brown with flecks of gold sparkle over a matte finish. The sparkle resulted in some fallout but little impact on the lid as they didn’t bind with the matte base. The texture was soft, thin, and somewhat powdery. The eyeshadow had opaque pigmentation that stayed on well for seven and a half hours before fading visibly.

Merciful

Merciful is a medium grassy green with subtle, warm undertones and a frosted finish. It had semi-sheer to medium pigmentation, which only built up to higher coverage if applied with a dampened brush as the texture was firmer and drier. It lasted well for seven hours before fading a bit.

Genius

Genius is a lighter purple with neutral-to-cool undertones and a frosted finish. The texture was thinner, stiffer, and really only worked decently when used with a dampened brush. It had medium coverage that did not build up well and was more prone to fallout. It wore well for seven hours before fading noticeably.

Soaring

Soaring is a darker, cobalt blue with strong, cool undertones and a satin finish. It felt like a cream-powder formula, as it was very dense and stiff, but it had opaque color coverage. I found it a real challenge to pick up product evenly, and I had the best luck using smaller, very dense/stiff brushes and avoiding having to blend it much. It stayed on well for eight hours before fading visibly.

Protector

Protector has a darker, peachy base color with green-to-teal shifting pearl. It had mostly opaque, buildable pigmentation that adhered well to bare skin and blended out well, despite its thinner, more emollient texture. It lasted nicely for seven hours before fading a bit.

Sonic Boom

Sonic Boom is a darker, reddish-copper matte base with flecks of gold micro-sparkle. The sparkles did not adhere to the lid, so they disappeared in my brush or resulted in fallout. The base had opaque color payoff, while the consistency was soft, somewhat powdery but blendable. It wore well for seven and a half hours before fading noticeably.

Tough to mess up a black shadow. And light warm brown. And medium-dark warm brown. And gold… particularly when it’s not your first or 20th rodeo. I wonder what’s going on over at UD…

Mariella Avatar

Valerie, your comment sums up exactly my reaction and I’m betting it’s how everyone else here feels. UD used to be able to pull these colours off with one hand tied behind its figurative back. I keep wondering if their recent decline stems in any way from this move to being able to call their products “clean”. I don’t know but it is almost beyond comprehension how a company that has produced reliable pencil liners, shadows and palettes (of course with some clunkers…every brand releases clunkers so bad that those of us who use them are left thinking “Hunh?) seems to have lost its way entirely.

Oliwia Avatar

I was waiting for this review, thank you so much, Christine! I was very seriously considering buying this palette for the nostalgic vibe, and the office dress code appropriate colors (never too many neutral in my stash), but seeing the review I feel completely cured from my want.
Such a disappointment! I have so much past love and nostalgia for UD, that I second what you wrote, that it’s hard to accept.

Z Avatar

Lol out of the whole palette I like your swatch of the black with gold sparkles the most. I used to love UD and purchased from them way back when they did those honking Book of Shadows and little slide to reveal small palettes and stuff like that. It’s been sad and embarrassing to watch them decline. Do they even have anyone who can create a cohesive and/or interesting color story any more?

Deborah S. Avatar

So sad to see a beloved company produce such a sad palette and for their holiday too. UD needs to go back to the drawing board and rethink their formula’s and color stories. A real shake up and revamp is really in order here, if they want to save the company. There are just too many really good, cruelty and clean eye shadow palettes out there now and turning out mediocre just isn’t going to save them.

Andrea Avatar

Ahhh! The joy of reading a proper review before buying! Because this kind of s.u.c.k.s! I thought the colours looked lovely but if I had tried this in the shop it would have to be “tested” by somebody else on me or on the back of the hand of the person selling it, and what would that tell me regarding its actual quality!? Zilch! And then I’d buy it, take it home, be super excited… try it on by myself and on myself…and then be super disappointed, and quietly seething over the waste for money!

Kacy Avatar

I thought that I was going crazy, as the reviews I’ve found online for this palette have been so complimentary! But I have struggled with this palette since day one. I find that the sparkly shadows are very crumbly and don’t stay well on my eyes. I have multiple times had glitter fall into my eye during application and wear. The matte colors are drier but at least they are pigmented! I really wanted to love this palette but it was so expensive for really poor quality product.
