Urban Decay Vice Lipstick

Urban Decay Studded Vice Lipstick ($17.00 for 0.11 oz.) is described as a “metallic gray-brown [with a Metallized finish].” It’s a muted, dark taupe-brown with subtle, warmer undertones and a metallic shimmer-sheen finish. It had semi-opaque color coverage with a lightly emollient texture that was easy to apply and comfortable to wear. It could have applied more evenly, though, and I did notice some of the color pooled into lip lines over time. This shade wore well for four and a half hours and was lightly hydrating. MAC Viva Glam Rihanna 2 (LE, $19.00) is lighter, less pigmented, warmer (90% similar). Urban Decay Shadowheart (P, $18.00) is less shimmery, darker, cooler (85% similar). Too Faced Hoochie (LE, $22.00) is cooler (90% similar). ColourPop Wet (LE, $7.00) is lighter, less glossy (85% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty Detox (LE, $30.00) is less shimmery, lighter, cooler (85% similar). MAC Noon Noir (LE, $19.00) is cooler (85% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Roman (DC, $36.00) is lighter, cooler (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Urban Decay Gubby Vice Lipstick ($17.00 for 0.11 oz.) is described as a “frosted light pink [with a Metallized finish].” It’s a light, pale peachy-pink with warm undertones and a metallic finish. It had semi-opaque color coverage that didn’t apply as evenly as one might like, and I did have issues with the milkier color pulling into lip lines after two hours of wear. The texture was lightly creamy with moderate slip and glided on comfortably. This shade wore well for three hours on me and was lightly hydrating. Tom Ford Beauty Carine (LE, $36.00) is warmer (95% similar). MAC Sublime Pleasure (LE, $19.00) is less shimmery (90% similar). MAC Royal Ball (LE, $19.00) is lighter, more pigmented (90% similar). Urban Decay Unicorn Vice Lipstick ($17.00 for 0.11 oz.) is described as a “pale peachy nude [with a Comfort Matte finish].” It’s a light-medium pinky-peach with warm undertones and a satin sheen. It had nearly full color payoff that went on fairly evenly, but it was hard to get it to be completely even and streak-free. The texture was lightweight, creamy, and glided on without tugging on the lips. On me, the color lasted for four hours but settled into lip lines over time. It was just a little hydrating overall. MAC Antonio's Girls (LE, $19.00) is less glossy (95% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty Dizzy Spell (104) (DC, $30.00) is darker, glossier (95% similar). Urban Decay Weirdo Vice Lipstick ($17.00 for 0.11 oz.) is described as a “pale baby pink [with a Cream finish].” It’s a light peachy-pink with strong,w arm undertones and a creamy, lightly glossy finish. It had good pigmentation, but it just didn’t apply evenly and tended to gather in lip lines, so there were areas that were fully covered and others that weren’t. The texture had moderate slip, and it did move around, so “lines” were created if I pressed my lips together. The color lasted for four hours and was moisturizing. Estee Lauder Mischievous Rose (P, $30.00) is darker (95% similar). Too Faced Taffy (DC, $22.00) is darker, warmer (95% similar). YSL Nude Beige (1) (P, $34.00) is lighter (90% similar). Urban Decay Whip Vice Lipstick ($17.00 for 0.11 oz.) is described as a “soft pink with gold iridescent shimmer [with a Sheer Shimmer finish].” It’s a sheer, frosted gold with a lightly glossy sheen. These types of sheerer, mostly gold-shimmer shades tend to look alike on the lips (even when they seem lighter/darker). I don’t know why this isn’t listed as a Sheer, so it ended up rating lower than you might expect On the press release, it was listed as a Metallized shade, but it is officially a Sheer Shimmer per reader Kate and confirmed via Sephora’s website. The texture was thin with a balm-like feel, and it lasted for two hours on me. Chanel Beige Dore (126) (LE, $37.00) is less glossy (95% similar). Urban Decay Trick (DC, $18.00) is more shimmery (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Beatrice (LE, $36.00) is more shimmery (90% similar). MAC Ruffian Gold (LE, $19.00) is more shimmery (90% similar). MAC Gel (P, $19.00) is more shimmery, darker, less glossy (90% similar). MAC You've Got It (LE, $19.00) is less glossy (90% similar). Guerlain Yellow It-stick (603) (DC, $37.00) is lighter (85% similar). Maybelline White Gold (P, $7.49) is more shimmery, more pigmented, cooler (85% similar). Guerlain #777 (P, $36.00) is more shimmery, more pigmented (85% similar). Top 20 dupes listed, see the rest. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

FORMULA OVERVIEW | Urban Decay Vice Lipstick ($17.00 for 0.11 oz.) is available in six finishes, which are primarily distinguished by level of sheen, shimmer content, and coverage. Mega Mattes are the thinnest and have the most “cling” as they are drier and more matte (but most are semi-matte and not a totally flat matte) and can be drying, though they are longer-wearing. Comfort Mattes are creamier, a little denser, with richer color payoff on average (they are the most pigmented out of the finishes), and have a satin finish that is fairly comfortable to wear, usually lightly hydrating, and longer-wearing. Creams are usually softer and creamier, though not too soft (they don’t mush or break from the base easily), with some being tackier and stiffer in the tube until they warm up against the lips; they have good color payoff, are hydrating, and are comfortable to wear but have more typical wear (four to six hours–six hours for deeper/richer shades like a red). Sheers and Sheer Shimmers have a more balm-like consistency that feels a little thinner but is wetter/more emollient than Mega Mattes, so ultimately, they feel quite different applied; they have sheerer coverage, though more semi-sheer to semi-opaque than very sheer, and have the shortest wear time at two to fours with light hydration. Metallized is the most shimmery of the finishes, though some of the other finishes have shades that are actually as shimmery (to me), but the Metallized formula has a thinner, more emollient base that isn’t as dense or as cream-like as the Creams; they feel more like the Sheers but a bit heavier and more pigmented (but seem to run semi-opaque to opaque, not always fully opaque) with average wear (four to five hours), light hydration. The Revolution formula–generally–felt a little more hydrating and pigmented on the lips, but these seem to wear a little longer; some of the shades that were in Revolution and are now in Vice (particularly the Creams, Sheers, and Sheer Shimmers) feel virtually the same on to me. The Comfort Mattes are the only ones that felt largely different–more satiny than matte, less dense compared to Matte Revolution.

A note on packaging: an average Revolution lipstick weighed 1.0 oz. in total, while a Vice Lipstick weighed 0.7 oz. in total. The weight distribution for a Revolution lipstick was: 0.2 oz. for the cap alone, 0.8 oz. for the base. The weight distribution for a Vice lipstick was: 0.2 oz. for the cap alone, 0.5 oz. for the base. The decrease is felt primarily in the sturdiness/weighted feeling of the base, so I find the older Revolutions to stand better on their own, but thrown into a cup or jar for storage, it doesn’t really matter. The more weighted base does give a greater sense of heft when applying, since you hold the base. The caps are the same total weight, but the Revolution caps are shorter and, as a result, maybe 1mm thicker, while the Vice caps are longer and spread the same weight of material over a larger area. All but two out of 120 lipstick caps felt very secure, and then about four were extremely secure and difficult to uncap, but otherwise, there is a soft “click” and the caps seem to stay on without easily coming off. All that being said, they seem to be the same packaging used in the Gwen Stefani and Alice Through the Looking Glass collaborations, though the interior tube felt a little higher-end, even though they all weigh the same. Revolution Lipsticks were $22.00 for 0.09 oz., which works out to be $244.44/oz., and these are $17.00 for 0.11 oz., which works out to be $154.55/oz. So while the packaging does feel less substantial and cheaper, you are paying $5 less and getting more for your money, but if you really liked the heavier base of Revolution lipsticks, you might miss that feeling with the new packaging.

I have Studded and adore the color. I think it looks less uneven on my lips. I like Whip, but have a dupe (Redemption) — this is a rare kind of warm, light color that actually looks good on me instead of washing me out. Something about the sheen and the sheerness. The rest of these shades are too light for me. I guess that’s good, since I already have ten of these Vice lipsticks…

I just picked up Weirdo and Unicorns in store on Friday…. I could not resist that new display even though I’m supposed to be on a no buy till I get a new job. But I forced myself to only get those two for now. I was just raiding my stash to see if I owned any dupes as well. 😉

I don’t own any of your dupes for Weirdo except Maybelline’s Pech Poppy but that reads way more coral and brighter in comparison on my skin.

And Unicorn reads much pinker and paler than MAC’s Sweet & Sour did one me. I gave it away because I wasn’t using it as it was a touch too orange on me for daily use. lol Colourpop Button is definitely a darker version of Unicorn. though.

I’m loving both though and I’m so glad I caved, they look completely different on my pale skin but similar in the tube. Heartless was way to blue based for me… Thus why I like to shop in store as much as possible now. 😉

Ooooh, Studded looks like a great color for fall/autumn. And the dupe Roman (Tom Food) looks cool too. Oh no, big trouble here….

The one shade in this 5-some that I could actually wear is Studded, and it is beautiful. Thing is, I do have MAC VG Rihanna II. Me thinks I need to wear that more often!
These other shades are just TOO light.
I will say , though, that Gubby looks like a very dimensional pink-nude on you! But I think on my darker toned lips, it wouldn’t look quite right.

I really expected to love VGR2. The overall shade was fine, but some other aspect, the level of shimmer + opacity? just read wrong. Will check this. Thank god we have a T reference to go look at UDV l/s. Reading T always makes me realize how inadequate my color theory/vocabulary is. It’s never enough to know just that I dislike something. I want to extrapolate the WHY, esp on things I thought I would like.

The VG Rihanna II, isn’t the easiest shade to pull off, that’s for sure! I did find that I could add a plummy or rusty aspect to it by using a lip liner underneath it, and/ or a matte lipstick like VG III. Doing this and not applying too much VGR2, works pretty well for me. Next, I’m going to try it over MAC Deep Love to see if I can get a dark sparkly chocolate shade!

I was going to comment on Whip a few days ago since I own the shade. Yes, it is a sheer shimmer. I’m not sure why it drew me in so much during the VIB Rouge premier event Sephora had but it’s OK. I guess I was trying to convince myself I needed lighter shades for summer. 🙂

I actually quite like Gubby and Whip on you – you are such a good sport for us, testing all sorts of colours that I consider wacky and not in the realm of what I would wear, but these more natural lip shades suit you so well. Thanks for this, and all of your other posts.
