Urban Decay Heavy Metals Metallic Eyeshadow Palette Review, Photos, Swatches
Heavy Metals
Urban Decay Heavy Metals Metallic Eyeshadow Palette ($55.00 for 0.60 oz.) is a new, limited edition holiday offering that includes 20 eyeshadows. The new formula was developed to “bump up the foiled effect” and have a “velvety feel” with “insane color payout and shiny metallic effects” that ‘blends like a dream.”
Overall, the eyeshadows felt a bit denser and smoother with less powderiness/excess product kicked up in the pan compared to the average Urban Decay eyeshadow but not like so far removed that they don’t feel like shimmery, powder eyeshadows. I only found one shade to be truly disappointing, which was Angelfire, as it was more like a semi-sheer glitter-bomb than a standalone eyeshadow. There were a few others that had room for improvement but most were quite nice and easy to work with.
I would expect that this palette’s impact would be maximized by combining it with your favorite mattes and satins rather than using only the shades in the palette, as they are all shimmery. It’s just not going to be a standalone palette for anyone who typically uses mattes in their looks.
The packaging is certainly different from a lot of palettes, though it felt unnecessarily wide due to the mirror sandwiched between the two panels of eyeshadow. I found it to feel cumbersome, and the slickness of the packaging itself made it harder to hold, so I’m not even sure how practical the mirror being in the middle actually ended up being (for me).

Bass
Bass is a rich bronze with warm undertones and dirty gold shimmer finish. The color payoff was intense and opaque in a single layer, while the texture was incredibly smooth and blendable. It wasn’t too firmly pressed in the pan but it didn’t have any excess powder kicked up in the pan either. This shade lasted for eight and a half hours on me.

Glory
Glory is a bright, medium gold with warm, orange undertones and a metallic finish. The consistency was moderately dense, but it was still creamy enough that it had good glide and adhered well to bare skin without looking patchy. It had rich color payoff that lasted for nine hours on me but there was a touch of fallout.

Demo
Demo is a deep brown with warm, rosy undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. It had opaque coverage with a moderately dense, slightly chunkier texture as there were larger sparkles in it beyond the metallic sheen. The eyeshadow applied fairly well to bare skin, but it did have the type of texture that applied better with a dampened brush. The color stayed on well for eight and a half hours with slight fallout over time.

Starfire
Starfire is a medium, orange-copper with warm undertones and a pearly sheen. The consistency was a bit drier and thinner compared to the other shades in the palette, so it did not apply as well to bare skin as it had a tendency to look a bit patchy. With a dampened brush, it applied beautifully, though. On me, it lasted for eight hours.

Afterparty is a medium-dark, coppery brown with warm, red undertones and a frosted sheen. Angelfire
Angelfire is a light, golden peach with warm undertones and flecks of larger sparkle and micro-glitter. It had semi-sheer coverage, which was not buildable, and it was harder to apply dry as it was looser and had a tendency to result in fallout without using a dampened brush or tacky base. It lasted for seven hours and had some fallout over time.

Roadie
Roadie is a deep, rosy brown with subtle, warm undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. It had opaque color payoff with a moderately dense, slightly creamy texture that was easy to work with, even with fluffier brushes for lid color. As a crease shade, it did take slightly extra effort to buff the edges due to the thicker texture overall. It wore well for eight and a half hours on me.

Acoustic
Acoustic is a light-medium, golden pewter with warm undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. The payoff was opaque in a single layer, while the texture was denser and a bit more firmly pressed in the pan, so it did require a denser brush but also worked particularly well with synthetics (I find synthetics often break up powders better but as a result, can cause softer formulations to get very messy). This shade wore well for eight and a half hours on me.

Dive
Dive is a medium blue with cool undertones and a metallic sheen. The consistency was fairly dense, and I felt like it could have been softer and creamier, which would have made it easier to pickup with a brush and achieve opaque, even coverage. It had good pigmentation, but it was a little harder to blend out the edges than I expected. It stayed on well for eight hours on me.

Metalhead
Metalhead is a medium-dark purple with warm, pink undertones and a cooler, violet sheen. It had good pigmentation but the consistencly was on the drier, thinner side–it didn’t have the same creamy, dense feel of the other shades. I felt like I needed to push at the surface a bit to get even, opaque coverage onto the lid. On me, it wore well for eight hours.

Punk Rock is a medium-dark, pinky plum with warmer, orange undertones and a frosted sheen. It had opaque color coverage that applied evenly and smoothly to the lid. Mullet
Mullet is a medium-dark green with subtle, warm undertones and a pearly sheen. It had good color payoff in a single layer, though the consistency was a bit thinner and not as cream-like as others in the palette, so I felt like I had to use a slightly heavier hand to get the coverage out of this shade. Amp
Amp is a medium, bluish-teal with cool undertones and a frosted sheen. It had opaque color coverage in a single layer with a soft, slightly firm texture–I felt like it had a similar density to the others but was drier in a way, so it worked best with a flat, synthetic brush for maximum coverage and blendability. Twisted
Twisted is a medium, dirty gold with subtle, warm undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. The color payoff was excellent, while the consistency was soft, smooth, and blendable with a slightly looser feel overall (at least, compared to others in the palette–it was still a bit denser than the average eyeshadow). It stayed on well for eight and a half hours but had a smidgen of fallout over time.

Beautiful eye looks! I just got mine yesterday. The packaging is a little odd but doesn’t bother me, it will fit fine in to my chest of drawers I use for storage. The colors are so nice on this, so glad they perform so well.
Enjoy yours, Emily!
I really want it, those swatches are killing me.
Right now, I have dupes for about 95-98% of these shades; in all honesty, my dupes have dupes, lol. And the shades I don’t have are colors I wouldn’t really wear, so I see no need to run out and purchase a dupe. Plus, I already have the Jouer Skinny Dip palette & the Fenty Beauty Galaxy palette, so my need of all shimmer/glittery palettes has been filled. This is an easy skip for me.
I’m also really confused by the packaging for this. Who approved this? It’s unnecessarily big. Even if I didn’t have almost all of the shades, the packaging would make me think twice about purchasing. It just looks like a pain to deal with.
Welp, was hoping your scores would convince me out of this one haha. Thank goodness I have so many points saved up at Ulta!
Me too! And a 20% off coupon burning a hole in my pocket, which would bring the price on this down to $44!
Do you know when this will be available at Sephora?
It’s already available at Sephora!
Sounds like it’s not on the Canadian Sephora (I don’t know if it’s where you are) :/ I get a “procust not carried” when I seach for it
Yeah, they are slow to launch stuff. 😉
i grabbed mine at Shoppers
Shoppers sells UD o_O
I knew about Benefit, but not UD. I haven’t seen any UD when I went there last time, maybe not in Quebec, as usual.
All SDM doors can order UD for you and you’ll receive free shipping.
I’m glad this new formula sounds good, even if the packaging looks like a huge pain. This joins the KVD Saint and Sinner in holiday palettes I’d be tempted by if only it weren’t for the unnecessary bulkiness of the packaging.
I find the packaging so offputting that it’s a complete pass for me. How is a mirror in the middle of the palette helpful to anyone? You can’t really prop it up without it falling over (and I assume it doesn’t have a kickstand in the back), and you can’t hold it up because it’s fundamentally too heavy and cumbersome. Would LOVE to know what the heck they were thinking.
Me too. The colors are gorgeous but the packaging is a huge turn-off. I’m bad a depotting too.
Exactly the reaction I had. I wonder if the people designing packaging even wear makeup? Imho, packaging needs to be beautiful AND functional.
I’d be tempted to get it if it went on sale and I’d be able to depot it…but then I’d have to pay for a Zpalette.
There. I talked myself out of it. Lol
Here’s hoping UD gets the memo on bulky packaging.
It’s actually not heavy at all! I was surprised by how easy it was to hold. Although I’m thinking I might get one of those back circles that you can stick to your phone so you don’t drop it!
How would you put it back in the slip? I thought it completely slides out of that more pink metallic thing, or is it more attached?
I’m messy – this palette will probably rarely see it’s case again!
I thought from the swatches that I had seen that this would perform pretty well and I am not disappointed. I am on the fence about this one, though. I have a lot of shimmery, glittery eye shadows as I am attracted to the sparkle on my eyes. I am different than a lot of older women who feel that they can only use mattes and neutral ones at that. I think a shimmer on my tiny mobile lid actually makes my mobile lid look a little bigger. I have plenty of shadows and feel like I don’t need this but there are a couple of shades that I really love. I think that I am talking myself out of this one and I hope that sticks. Right now I am trying to focus on getting holiday shopping for others done and this would be for me so I am going to pass.
I agree with you that shimmers can work really well on older women. I have never given them up. Mattes are no easier to blend on my crepey lid corners and in fact look muddy. My concern about this particular palette is that the darker shades will not work with my glasses so I am holding off until I can get to Sephora and play.
I ordered mine from the Urban Decay website so I could get my birthday gift which was a full size Sin highlighter and ended up having a code for a free full sized Big Bang Vice Lipstick also!!Im excited to use this I saw a look Jordan Liberty did on a model on his YouTube page and it was so bold and beautiful.
i hate that packaging SO much 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁
I quite like it, but because of $ conversion, it’s CA$72 on UD.ca and it’s just too expensive. I have some similar colours, so unless by some magic I find it on sale, I’m not gonna get it.
probably in January, they will do a sale. I’m going to have to depot the palette anyway if I get it so I can wait.
Oh me too, if I ever get it, there’s no way I keep this packaging. I already have a “UD Z-Palette” with BOS2, OZ Glinda and some singles I depoted. I hope they are just mot too painfull to depot (BOS waseasy cause it was cardboard)
I’ll maybe treat myself to it with Xmas money, I’ll see.
Oh no, I was really hoping the color shades would be less bright and more like jewel tones. I have been looking for some nice jewel toned shadows to add to my collection since I have very few colored shadows. Do you have any suggestions for a palette or brand that makes singles with shimmery amethyst, sapphire, and emerald shades Christine?
Hi Kim. I’m not Christine, but I would recommend checking out Make Up For Ever. They have a couple hundred colors in their Artist Shadow line and they are pretty awesome shadows. I think you should be able to find what you are looking for.
Hi Kim,
Check Anastasia Beverly Hills shadows. I know they do a Black Friday sale where they have them 50% off. Also makeup geek foils are freaking gorgeous too. Swatches all
Over the internet.
Colour Pop has some and so do Coloured Raine.
Sorry I should have said Sephora Canada. I’m sure I saw it on the website yesterday with an out of stock sign. When I checked back today it had disappeared off the website
Sorry – my default is Sephora.com since I’m US! Stupid me should have checked the Canadian site as well – I forget that they are not always in sync.
WOW!! I wasn’t so sure at first but this is a must-have!
Glad to see this scored well, but between Lorac Unzipped, UD After Dark, and some other singles, I have enough dupes for these shades.
Now even *more* tempting having earned an elusive A!
The one big thrill-kill on this palette is its unwieldy unnecessarily bulky configuration with that mirror in the middle. This would have been more practical done as 2 separate palettes if using the slide out sleeve packaging idea. Other than that, I am sold on it.
Iwill eventually get around to checking the more extensive dupe list for each shade to determine whether I actually need it, though.
I love UD but I was unsure of an all-metallic palette — until I saw your swatches. How could I resist? (I didn’t).
These are beautiful but I really wish brands would put in shadows for a complete look. I don’t want to have to rifle through all my pallets to find a transition shade. So it’s a no for me. Why is it such a big ask for a complete pallet?
Your transition shade will not be the same as another person’s, so sometimes that’s the approach – you have the basics like a great brow bone highlighter, your favorite matte black eyeshadow, transition shades, etc. that work perfectly for your skin tone + undertone so the rest are complementing those basics. Another example is that a lot of the “brow bone” shades included in palettes are by no means a highlighter on anyone with medium or darker skin!
I don’t mind a lack of a transition shade in a palette. I feel that the transition shade is likely to hit pan before the rest if you use it every time you use the palette, so you’d have to get a new one anyway before the other shadows were gone. I recently bought a single shadow that works really well for me as a transition shade, so I can use it with palettes that don’t come with one, and replace it easily when I run out.
That’s a pretty impressive rating for a UD limited edition palette, and the colors look nice. I may pick this one up now. But if I get it, I’m depotting it almost immediately, because that packaging is just silly.
A fabulous palette to be sure, and what a mammoth task in reviewing all of these Christine. You have done a sterling job once again.
But between the Naked 1 palette, the Full Spectrum and Afterdark palette – you pretty much have all the shades.
Plus, you would need to reach into other palettes for some mattes to balance things out – always a nuisance.
The packaging isn’t for everyone and perhaps it would have been better to have sold each side separately. Having the mirror in the middle makes using the palette that much harder too.
But a gorgeous palette, nonetheless and I am so glad it rated well.
Hey Christine, how easy do you think these would be to depot? Are they pretty firmly glued in?
Sorry, I have no idea as I don’t really depot anything and have never depotted anything beyond a MAC product!
I have the Palette and Love it!! They are very firmly glued in and the shadows do not look like they would survive anything too rough. I think they would crumble pretty easily as I consider them to be pretty soft.
Are they softer than regular UD?
I’m not even going to pretend I’m thinking of resisting this. I just hit the magic 2,000 point mark at Ulta where you get the bonus $25 and I have that 20% off code too. I had even convinced myself to skip Lorac mega pro 4 -I only have the first one- but since it’s marked down…and I’m using points…and I have the promo code plus ebates… It would be irresponsible of me NOT to buy it…right? RIGHT?!?? ?
Srsly though, I am so excited about this palette I can’t wait to start playing. Granted I haven’t seen the awkward appearing packaging in person or held it so that’s probably going to be a bummer but the eyeshadow looks so freaking FUN!!
I hope you love it, Bonnie!
I’m actually turned off by the palette itself. Why does it have to be so huge and bulky? It’s just odd having that mirror in the middle. How would you even begin to hold that with one hand to apply your eyeshadow? Seems like a wasted amount of space IMO. The colors are beautiful but I think most are easily duped. Easy pass for me.
LOL, bulky? UD packaging? No way! Never! 😉
Thank you so much, Christine! I’ve been anxious for your swatches/reviews since I first learned about this palette. i think I trust you more than any other guru – and I love that we have similar skin types and that we are both not afraid to wear colors. I think based on your reviews, I will definitely be picking it up. Maybe I can work with it to try to depot and figure out a better palette layout. This one seems ungainly.
Let us know if depotting is easy, Alyssa!
Glad to see I didn’t waste my $ even though I used the Ulta 20% off plus a bunch of points. Mine should arrive tomorrow.
Nice deal!
I’d be more down with this if it was sold as two separate palettes. I’m absolutely uninterested in the neutral basic side and don’t need any more brown, red, coppery shades. The colorful side is much more appealing. The mirror is odd.
I appreciate the unique design of this palette, but I’m not sure it’s practical. It does seem unnecessarily large with the mirror in the center.
I’m so salty over this choice of packaging… seriously. What were they thinking? The less space it takes the better! I don’t have infinite storage space for all the makeup they want me to buy so why not help a girl out for their own sake?
I hate waste of space. So. Much. Why is this a thing? We’re not children to be impressed by size. Cmon!
Why oh why weren’t these gorgeous shadows available when my eyelids were younger?. I so love these colors and the violet family is much better than most. I will probably buy this and mix with mattes in the crease. Beautiful sand I never expected it.
I’m 39 with some serious wrinkles going on, and these look pretty good! Pretty forgiving. I’ve been using the purples a lot. Then again, I’m sort of the “I’ll wear glitter till I die and you better sprinkle it around my plot too” type of person. 🙂
I bought it and love it. I do use some mattes with it too.
The shadows in this palette are really beautiful! I am a shimmer girl and I just love it all. The nuetral side really appeals to me. But I am sure i have dupes for every single color in this palette with the exception of the sparkly black. I am goign to pass for now but if it goes on sale I may buckle and pick it up.
Man that is really tempting… I love a few of those shades.
I have about twenty UD palettes, and this is hands down my absolute favorite. I’m not the best blender, but these work SO well together! My eyes almost look like I have skills! I don’t see myself using the neutral side so much because I have tons of dupes for them, but the colorful side was just what my collection needed. Scared to de-pot but wish I could, the packaging is really pretty, but this wins for most obnoxious palette design ever.
I absolutely love this palette. I have gotten a lot of compliments on the eye looks I’ve created, which are much more bold than I tend to do because these are just fun colors to play with. I wear some of the more neutral colors on my lids for daytime and at night I just play with the brighter shades. These are easy for me to work with and I am far from a pro. Yes, you will need a matte palette if you want to do more than just a lid shade. The shadows don’t crease (I always use a primer so can’t verify how they work without one) and they last through the work day through the evening. They even last through going to the gym after work. Yes, the packaging is a bit big… but honestly I think people make too much fuss about it. I love that I can slide it out and set it on my counter and it lays flat. I don’t really need the mirror, that is excessive, but I still very much enjoy this packaging. It is also sturdy so I could travel with it no problem.
