Sneak Peek: Make Up For Ever Artist Color Shadows - Matte Finish Photos & Swatches

Make Up For Ever Artist Color Shadows | Matte Finish

Over the next few days, I’ll be sharing swatches of the newly released Make Up For Ever Artist Color Shadow ($17.00 for 0.08 oz.) range. Today’s swatches feature shades with a Matte finish! From what I’ve experienced thus far, I’d say that the new formula for mattes gives them a smoother, slightly denser with more slip in the pan that makes for less powderiness/excess product kicked up in the pan. The pigmentation varied from semi-opaque to opaque, but the shades I’ve tested so far have typically been buildable. There were some shades that were a bit different from the original formula, though a lot of them were fairly similar in color.

We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! Thank you for understanding!

Oh no, I was excited for a lot of these and many swatched very poorly. :/ They really felt like Slate, Chalk, Abyssal Blue, and Eggplant were great iterations of those colors that everyone would be lining up to add to their collection? Then against all odds we have that bright yellow and light blue looking pretty good, when those usually seem tricky to formulate in flat matte textures. Khaki still looks good to me and I want it if there are enough keepers in the rest of the launch to justify a palette.

I know this isn’t a review, Christine, but do you think primer might help these apply better? And maybe darker? I can’t tell on some of them, like Gray Beige (which I was pumped for) if they’re sheer or just apply kind of pale.

Hmm. Some swatch pretty poorly eg Prussian Blue, Slate, Eggplant. Others look ok. Doesn’t bode well for the reformulation being for the better, generally speaking. Also, some look rather different from their namesakes in last artist shadow generation, like Auburn, Canyon. It’s a wait and see for me — reviews and in-store swatching will matter. Thanks for getting these up so quickly.

Agreed. Auburn and Canyon ARE different. What was that old song about I Love You Just the Way You Are? Or should that have been were? My general reaction to this reformulation is Boo! Hiss! And probably, Done!

Thanks for getting the swatches of the mattes up so quickly. I was tempted but I’m glad I held up on purchasing as these look mediocre to horrible.

So sadden to see that the new formula isn’t as strong in pigmentation as the old formula, I knew nothing good could of come out of the company going down on price. I would still much rather pay the $21 dollars and get what I pay for.

Mattes are tricky and rarely swatch the way I want them to look. Certainly the colours I am attracted to here seem to be of the lessor swatching. I really did not care for the MUFE artist face colour (cheek) update earlier this year. I bought three shades in a palette and wish I hadn’t. The formula is not for me. These swatches remind me of those in some respects. Tough call. ABH mattes are not nearly as lauded as their shimmers, but I have better success with them.. the opposite to most. I think working with these will tell the story. Look forward to your insights!

I’m waiting for your reviews, matte swatches are notorious for being inconsistent with actual performance. Most of my favorite matte shades, especially darker shades, swatch terribly but work wonderfully.

A few of the lighter shades look nice but perhaps that’s because they are light so you can’t see if they’re poorly pigmented or patchy. I do like the look of Eggshell, Milk Tea and Grey Beige but I’ll wait to see how you rate them, Christine, and also if I already own dupes.

M106 looks the weakest but if buildable, it isn’t a problem as that is a color I would prefer to builf. The others look strong.
Love MUFE over all.

I had high expectations for these shadows, but feel a little disappointed with their performance. I remind myself that there will be another palette (or three) launched next month that may have better formula/pigment/price and then I don’t suffer from FOMO. Thank you for taking the time to swatch all of these!

The cool-toned mattes in the 1st generation weren’t necessarily so hot IMO, it was the warm mattes that were so amazing. These don’t swatch as well but they could still perform as well. Speculoos is quite different, that’s a shame as there’s no other ochery brown in the lineup. These warm browns aren’t as vibrant as their counterparts, see: Cappuccino and Cookie. Abyssal Blue and Ultramarine Blue are totally different, and a different finish, to their detriment it seems. A few others have swapped finishes. Confusing. Off the top of my head, they nixed Mustard, Sienna, Chestnut, Sweet Chestnut, Morello Cherry, Rosewood, and I think a few of the deep dark browns. I can see them nixing the blushy tones since they launched a blush line. I think nixing such amazing warm browns in the current warm-toned environment is a mistake, BUT maybe they trimmed it down to the bestsellers. I’m biased because I have four of the nixed shades in my custom palette and I absolutely love them. Glad I have them.

yes!! this is just what I was saying. I would think, maybe not popular but I’ve heard quite few people talking about fawn especially and they nixed that shade which was surprising. they seemed to have taken out the warm range, and a lot of these are not just cool but seem flat? speculous was one of my favorites and so unique that one was also surprising but I noticed the # changed and its spelled different.( Sienna, fawn- gone, canyon (changed! also) (Mac is supposed to be re-releasing uninterrupted this spring, hopefully perm that could take its place). noticed the finish swap too – cinnamon was a satin prior. this new range just doesn’t excite me, I can see myself repurchasing the brow/ inner h.l shades and maybe 1 or 2 others but thats about it for me.

I mean, they did have a LOT of warm matte browns–maybe more than they could sell. I just don’t agree with their picks. These do look flat where as the previous ones were rich and vibrant. I’m most confused about several of the colors changing finishes. I just don’t get that.

Uninterrupted would be awesome!! I hope that’s true.

I am so, so glad I slowly collected all of the shades (specially the warm mattes) that I wanted before they reformulated. It took me about 3 years. I even passed on the first Viseart Neutral Mattes palette to create my own custom palette of MUFE matte shadows. When they went on sale for Black Friday, I was a little mad. But now I’m glad again. (haha.) Thanks for the swatches Christine!

mufe was one of my favorite eyeshadows until they revamped the line yet again. A LOT of my favorites were discontinued , and I can’t even get them anymore. The mattes were the best and 3 of my most used are not even in the new line, not to mention 2 I tried and compared to the old line aren’t even the same shade?! The whole thing is rather disappointing to be honest, going from 210 to 125 shades?! seems like a major setback
