Browse swatches! Try using our Swatch Gallery to lookup swatches on the fly, whether you want to view swatches of all shades in a particular formula, are trying to narrow down to a particular matte red lipstick, or need to compare two swatches side-by-side.
Avoid dupes! Before you buy, check to see if you have dupes in your stash or perhaps have tried similar shades in the past and didn’t end up liking them. You can lookup dupes on The Dupe List by product type or a specific shade, and you can also compare two palettes side-by-side to see how much (or little) overlap there is. BONUS! If you’ve created an account on Temptalia, you can keep track of products you own through your vanity, and then you’ll be able to limit your search results to dupes you own!
Also, I thought it might be useful to highlight some of the bestselling formulas at Sephora that I’ve also reviewed and link below for those looking for a deep dive into research prior to purchasing:

- Anastasia Soft Glam Palette
- Becca Shimmering Skin Perfectors
- Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Lipsticks

Similarly, our Best of 2017 posts include picks across categories and price points with many products picked being permanent. I also put together annual gift guides during the holiday season using only permanent products, so you can find even more picks from 2017’s gift guides.
Dang! I just placed an order 2 weeks ago, I could have waited. I might take the opportunity to get a beauty blender (i loved the sample I got).
Karine, how tiny is the beauty blenders that they offer with foundations? They’re like the micro mini? For me, they’re pretty useless; too bad I cannot delete the item from the cart (it’s wasteful if I don’t want it).
Christine, I really appreciate that you don’t just post sale info, but also encourage people to think about their purchases, by linking to reviews, encouraging people to check their stash for dupes, and giving people a place to be talked out of purchases! It’s a refreshing change from the mindset I see around the online beauty community.
I am a big believer in trying to encourage people to make better purchasing decisions–think more critically, avoid buying the same shade 20 times, know what you’re buying (I don’t care if I rate something a C and you love it; I hope that my review helped you figure out if it would work for you!) and love what you own.
I also appreciate how you encourage us to be critical and think about our purchase and not get 10 dupes of a shade.
I want to congratulate you, about the perception and the spirit of morality in your work.
So one part that seems new is “Online offer valid for one-time use only”. I guess this means you only get one shot online at the sale? That kind of sucks.
My guess is that this is a one-time sale–don’t necessarily expect it back next year–solely to celebrate/bring awareness to the updates to the rewards program, but hopefully, any future codes will be good for multiple use like they have in the past!
Actually, in store purchases are not limited. Only online purchases are limited to one
That is what I have written in the post: “The offer can be redeemed online once or as many times as you want in-store.”
This is good timing since my partner and I both are running low on some skin care items 🙂 And this may be a good excuse for me to splurge on a Pat McGrath lipstick, especially since I found out I’m getting a raise next month.
Honestly, Sephora’s Rouge/VIB/BI sales never feel worth it to me anymore. I might look through my wishlist and see what items are Sephora exclusive, but I don’t think I’ll be buying anything because it would end up being buying for the sake of buying, which is bad for my wallet.
This is exactly how I feel. I thought maybe I would pick up some MUFE products but then I thought when they have their friends and family it is 255 off so i will just wait.
Any idea if this replaces this year’s November sale, or is it an additional 20% off time for this year?
No idea, and I don’t expect Sephora to comment either way since they play these things very close to the chest, you know?
I was told by a Sephora store employee, that this does not replace the November sale. This is something extra, as an appreciation event. There will be the usual sale in November this year.
Perfect timing! As I’m using up the dregs of my last bottle of Dr. Dennis Gross Ferulic Acid & Retinol eye serum. Plus, I *may* buy Drunk Elephant Retro Lala Cream, too. Mainly because every sample I’ve used of it has never caused my eczema to flare up, nor has it broken me out. But, I DO still love my old standby HG nighttime face moisturizer by Hada Labo, so I just don’t know whether this is a “must”?
Also, I’m weighing between another PMG product (possibly a palette?) or waiting to see whether TF’d newest collection, Fruity Juicy, has the quality and NO saccharin!
I use these sales to stock up on replacements with a small bonus thrown in if I am curious. Don’t go wild buying $100’s worth of untryed products.
Exactly, Susan! Last night, I brought home a generous sample of the other Drunk Elephant face cream, Proprotini (?) something or other. Used it last night on a whim, and this morning I actually saw results. I’m shocked that anything could show any immediate effect on my skin, but it did. Their other night cream Lala, feels wonderfully hydrating and so good, but it only hydrates. This other one hydrated my skin AND made it appear firmer and healthier looking than it has in ages!
As for what I bought (so far), just Dr. Dennis Gross Ferulic Acid Retinol eye serum (I’m on probably my 5th or 6th bottle), Sephora Contour Pencil in Sangria, ND Mini Lila palette.
What would people recommend between the ABH Norvina palette and the ABH Soft Glam palette, if I’m planning on grabbing the Natasha Denona Lila mini palette? I definitely don’t need or want both.
Soft Glam! I really had no interest in it until I searched it but now I absolutely adore it!
I see that they have put a limit on Drunk Eleph and Tatcha products for the sale? That being said, I will restock my Tatcha deep cleanse.
I really do not need more TF or PMG (until the new Mothership arrives– I am aching for that one!)
I see that Renee Rouleau is also having a sale so I will tap that one! I am on a skincare buying splurge lately, and I am loving that brand as well as Jordan Samuel Skin!
I personally take advantage of the Sephora sales to purchase things I already know I need (and maybe throw in the cart those Shiseido cotton pads with a little less `guilt`) or I’m going to finish in the next 2-3 months. I have a more streamlined make-up collection and I don’t like to stock up on things (especially skincare).
For example, for this Beauty Insider Appreciation Event I plan on buying a foundation (I’m on the last pumps of my current one), the Kiehl’s Epidermal Re-Texturizing Micro-Dermabrasion (best scrub I have found, but at $41 I always look for a sale) and a Vitamin C serum.
But Sephora sales come with the fact that you cannot also add `perks` to the cart. And if you buy $20-40 products the perks are sometimes better than the 15% off. In the springtime sale I actually skipped the sale code because the perk was a mini of Drunk Elephant eye cream. That mini was more valuable than the 15% off for the products I wanted to buy.
Even now, if I’ll see great quality skin care minis as perks, I’ll skip the sale and make 3 separate purchases to get 3 perks. 😆
No makeup. I bought a Dermaflash exfoliator that I had on my wish list for the November sale. Now I have used up the one-time online code so I just have to stay out of the stores.
I love the Dermaflash exfoliator! Bought mine at the Nordstrom anniversary sale, one of my best buys during that sale.
Is anyone else as upset as I am that the online code is only a one-time-only use? I hope this will not be how it is from now on. I just feel so pressured to get everything in 1 shot. It’s hard for me to get into the store, and I find things come in and out of stock all the time. They also have way more variety online. ?
And stores are so crowded during VIB sales… I hate waiting in line at checkout and I hate being in a crowded store.
If anyone is interested, Viseart Dark Mattes is already 20% off!
I placed my order just after midnight last night and realized that there were a few items I had forgotten to place in my order. So I had to go to one of the local stores near me, which did not have the items I forgot to put into my online order. So only getting to use the code online x 1 really ‘sucks’. On a positive note, I did have an opportunity to speak with a couple of SAs regarding the usual fall/holiday sale and they stated that it will probably happen as usual, that this was to promote their new rewards. Hopefully, that will be true and we will have an opportunity to shop the holiday special edition items.
Just went to my Sephora store today- alot of items were already out of stock. Just found out that Sephora can make an on-line order with the 20% off in store! So I placed two more orders online through the store, because they did not have stock in the items I wanted to order. I went into the store with a full online shopping cart, showed it to them on my phone, and apparently they have a special code that gives the 20% off (Rouge or other discounts depending on your status), and they will order it for you. Of course, it doesn’t help if you don’t have a Sephora near you and you have used your one time code already, but maybe they will give the discount if you order on the phone. They would not share their online code with me.
I had my shopping cart ready and submitted my order when I woke up. Added bonus, August is my birthday month!
September is my birthday month so I’m waiting for Saturday for the online order. 😆
September is also my birthday month. I opted for the 250 points instead of the birthday gifts. Hope I made a good choice, not seeing much yet as far as newer perks of being Rouge….
I am another one who hopes the online “one time only” isn’t a continuing trend. I can often talk myself into several smaller orders, particularly if new stuff gets offered in the rewards section or goes on sale in the meantime. But I have a hard time clicking submit on one huge order. And quite frankly, I walked around the store and it seems like most of what I want are online only exclusives and the couple things I did want in the store were completely sold out (a Dior eyeliner and NARS Kauai).
I talked myself out of Tom Ford Nude Dip and the Sublime Pat McGrath palette. I may need someone to talk me out of it come November. The only reason I successfully talked myself out of it is because I picked up UD Naked, Nars Kauai, and Viseart Bridal Satin since they are all getting discontinued, reformulated, or were on sale. I also used this as an opportunity to pick up Burberry Nude 002 wet/dry shadow and Pat McGrath Sorry Not Sorry. I decided it was a good time to treat myself to some A+ products.
I did buy the Tom Ford Nude Dip quad. I have been admiring it for awhile, especially after I had bought the Honeymoon quad. I think it would be a great purchase! I will not be able to purchase it at the 20% off anywhere else. Again, had a Sephora employee place an order online while I was in the store, using a 20% code that they have. Its a good thing its ending today because I would find another excuse to go back and place another order! Did get some Xmas shopping out of the way, will just wait for the one in November to finish it up and buy the holiday items. Now just waiting for the new PMG palette on the 7th. I hear it will also launch in Sephora on that date.
