MAC Swamped Modern Twist Kajal Liner
MAC Swamped Modern Twist Kajal Liner

MAC Modern Twist Kajal Liner ($17.00 for 0.01 oz.) is supposed to be an “easy-glide formula” with a “soft texture that’s perfect for rimming the sensitive waterline” that has “colour intensity and extreme depth” in a “long-wearing waterproof formula.” It’s a slim, twist-up eyeliner thas has light slip–not enough to slide around too easily but enough not to tug–with semi-opaque to mostly opaque coverage in one stroke. They felt creamier rather than waxy to me. On me, the formula wore between six and nine hours on me before noticeably thinning. None of them lasted for more than a few hours on the waterline, and some shades applied better/worse on the waterline. Some shades flaked while they wore, between four and six hours in (noted by the shade).

Swamped ($17.00 for 0.01 oz.) is described as a “deep khaki green.” It’s a muted, medium-dark forest green with subtle, warm undertones and a sparkling, pearly sheen. It had semi-opaque coverage in one stroke, which built-up to opaque coverage in two layers. The consistency has noticeable sparkle, so I’m not sure if it’s truly recommended/safe for the waterline (the formula is supposed to work for the waterline). When I tested it, the color lasted for four hours on the waterline and about eight hours on the lower lash line, but there were some flakes of eyeliner at the six-hour mark. Urban Decay Zodiac (LE, $22.00) is more shimmery, darker (90% similar). Urban Decay Mildew (P, $22.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). MAC Devotion (P, $20.00) is darker (90% similar). Shoreline ($17.00 for 0.01 oz.) is described as a “grey.” It’s a muted, medium-dark taupe gray with cooler undertones and a pearly shimmer. It had semi-sheer pigmentation, which was buildable to semi-opaque coverage with two to three passes. It was lightly creamy and didn’t tug on the lash line. The color wore for four hours on the waterline, eight hours on the lower lash line. Smashbox Moody (P, $18.00) is darker, warmer (95% similar). MAC Coin Operated (LE, $17.00) is lighter, cooler (95% similar). Urban Decay Uzi (P, $22.00) is darker (90% similar). Sephora Starry Sky (P, $10.00) is more shimmery, cooler (90% similar). Nothing On ($17.00 for 0.01 oz.) is described as a “light beige.” It’s a light-medium, peachy beige with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had good pigmentation in a single stroke, and it had a lightly creamy consistency that felt thicker than other shades overall. It didn’t layer on itself as well (seemed to become uneven). The color lasted for five hours on the waterline, eight hours on the lower lash line. Kat Von D Swanly (P, $18.00) is lighter (90% similar). Revlon Empire (PiP, ) is darker, warmer (90% similar). Polar Ice ($17.00 for 0.01 oz.) is described as a “pearly white.” It’s a medium white with cooler undertones and a mostly matte finish. It doesn’t read that pearly to me, though it is not quite matte. It had semi-sheer coverage that was buildable to mostly opaque. It had more slip to it than other shades, so it seemed to look almost streaky when passed back and forth. On the waterline, the color wore for four hours, seven and a half hours on the lower lash line. Fenty Beauty Wet Tshirt (LE, ) is less shimmery (95% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty Iced (P, $24.00) is more shimmery (90% similar). ColourPop Exit (P, $5.00) is less shimmery, brighter (90% similar). Easy pass on these. Already have Sephora Go For A Ride and the Nyx skintone pencil in light for lightening my lower waterline, and both of them have much better quality and lasting power than these MAC ones. And the gray one is just “meh” for me.
