MAC Own the Look Mattene

MAC Own the Look Mattene ($19.00 for 0.08 oz.) is described as “deep intense pearl.” It’s a medium-dark purple with warm pink undertones and a very subtle violet shimmer. It had semi-opaque color payoff that glided on without tugging on the lips, but it didn’t apply as evenly as I would have liked. The color pulled into lip lines noticeably after three and a half hours of wear, though it lasted for closer to five and a half hours of wear. It was neither drying nor hydrating. MAC Strong Woman (LE, $19.00) is less glossy (95% similar). ColourPop Leather (DC, $7.00) is darker (95% similar). Urban Decay Speedball (DC, $22.00) is glossier (90% similar). Urban Decay Speedball (DC, $18.00) is brighter, glossier (90% similar). MAC Hellebore (DC, $21.00) is darker, glossier (90% similar). ColourPop Zipper (P, $6.50) is less glossy (90% similar). Urban Decay Mad Hatter (LE, $18.00) is more shimmery, lighter (85% similar). Urban Decay Plague (DC, $18.00) is more shimmery, lighter (85% similar). MAC Model Behavior (P, $19.00) is more shimmery, lighter (85% similar). Urban Decay Flashback (P, $18.00) is more shimmery, cooler, less glossy (85% similar). MAC Punk Couture (P, $19.00) is darker (85% similar). Urban Decay Mad (DC, $18.00) is more shimmery, darker, cooler (85% similar). MAC Royal Hour (LE, $19.00) is more shimmery, lighter (85% similar). Anastasia Vintage (P, $20.00) is less glossy (90% similar). Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Alt-Girl (DC, $17.00) is more shimmery, cooler, glossier (80% similar). MAC Personal Pick Mattene ($19.00 for 0.08 oz.) is described as “mid-tone cool rose.” It’s a muted, light-medium pink with subtle, cool undertones and a mostly matte finish. It had fairly good color payoff with a lightly creamy consistency that didn’t tug or pull at the lips during application. The texture is lightweight and thin enough that it can emphasize the natural texture of the lips, so I would recommend exfoliating and/or hydrating heavily prior to applying this shade. The color lasted for four hours with slight settling into lip lines. NARS Roman Holiday (P, $27.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). KVD Beauty Lovesick (P, $20.00) is less glossy (90% similar). Bite Beauty Lotus (P, $24.00) is warmer (90% similar). Anastasia Sweet Pea (P, $18.00) is darker (90% similar). ColourPop Contempo (DC, $7.00) is darker, warmer (85% similar). ColourPop Tiny Chum (LE, $7.00) is warmer (90% similar). NARS Villa Lante (LE, $25.00) is lighter, brighter (85% similar). Maybelline Ravishing Rose (P, $7.99) is lighter, brighter (85% similar). Maybelline Blushing Pout (P, $7.99) is lighter, cooler (85% similar). MAC Tease Me (P, $20.00) is more shimmery, lighter (85% similar). Make Up For Ever Cold Pink (203) (P, $20.00) is less shimmery, darker (85% similar). ColourPop Dopey (P, $7.00) is more muted, warmer (90% similar). ColourPop Last Call (LE, $7.00) is lighter, glossier (80% similar). MAC Steady Going (P, $19.00) is lighter, brighter, cooler (80% similar). Urban Decay Disobedient (DC, $18.00) is warmer (80% similar). KVD Beauty Melancholia (P, $20.00) is lighter, brighter, less glossy (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

MAC Power My Spirit Mattene ($19.00 for 0.08 oz.) is described as “deep black plum.” It’s a blackened purple with subtle, cool undertones and plum and eggplant-hued micro-shimmer. It had semi-sheer to semi-opaque color coverage, but this was a really difficult shade to apply–so patchy and uneven with too much slip to keep it looking pristine, even if applied with a lip brush. It needs a lip liner underneath to help keep it in place. The color lasted for five hours but settles a lot into lip lines. MAC Which Witch (LE, $19.00) is warmer (95% similar). ColourPop Nevermind (LE, $7.00) is less glossy (95% similar). MAC Phenomenal Woman (LE, $19.00) is darker (90% similar). NARS Train Bleu (P, $27.00) is cooler, less glossy (90% similar). ColourPop Hutch (P, $7.00) is cooler (90% similar). MAC Instigator (P, $19.00) is brighter (90% similar). Revlon Midnight Mystery (P, $8.49) is more shimmery (90% similar). Estee Lauder Extrovert (P, $32.00) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). MAC Smoked Purple (P, $19.00) is cooler, less glossy (90% similar). Christian Louboutin Beaute Eton Moi (P, $90.00) is warmer, less glossy (90% similar). Bite Beauty Berry Rouge (LE, $26.00) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). MAC Noblesse (DC, $21.00) is lighter, brighter (85% similar). MAC Yung Rapunxel (LE, $19.00) is lighter (85% similar). MAC Soulfully Rich (P, $18.00) is warmer (85% similar). Bite Beauty Elderberry (LE, $24.00) is warmer, glossier (85% similar). Makeup Geek Shady (P, $15.00) is darker, more pigmented (85% similar). Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Black Dahlia (DC, $18.00) is warmer, glossier (85% similar). MAC Prince Noir (LE, $19.00) is warmer (90% similar). NARS Liv (P, $34.00) is warmer (85% similar). Pat McGrath Exxotica (LE, $40.00) is lighter, brighter (85% similar). Top 20 dupes listed, see the rest. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

MAC Strutting Fabulous Mattene ($19.00 for 0.08 oz.) is described as “bright lavender.” It’s a medium, lavender purple with cool undertones and a matte finish. It had mostly opaque pigmentation with a lightly creamy texture that didn’t pull on the lips. The finish is definitely more matte, and when paired with the thinner texture, it isn’t the most flattering when worn. It pulled into lip lines a little bit over the five hours it lasted. I wish it was a little smoother-looking once applied, because the color is hard to replicate. ColourPop Lemon Drop (LE, $6.50) is darker, cooler (90% similar). MAC Kawaii Party (LE, $18.50) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). MAC Lavender Jade (P, $19.00) is lighter (90% similar). ColourPop Brills (LE, $7.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). Urban Decay Shallow (DC, $18.00) is darker, cooler (85% similar). ColourPop Koala (LE, $6.50) is lighter, less glossy (90% similar). Makeup Geek Arabesque (LE, $12.00) is warmer (85% similar). Rare Beauty Daring (P, $20.00) is less shimmery, lighter, warmer (85% similar). Sephora Off-Limits (38) (P, $8.00) is darker, glossier (85% similar). Urban Decay Vanity Kills (DC, $18.00) is lighter, cooler (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Out of this collection, I was most interested in the purple lippies, but looks like they are hit or miss. The best scoring one is Own the Look but I already have Colour Pop Leather, so I’m set. It’s too bad Power My Spirit isn’t better because that micro shimmer looks pretty

Strutting Fabulous is so beautiful and a bit different enough from most other purples to make it worthwhile, only catch is that it’s not a shade of lipstick that would work on me. Just too light of a lavender for my coloring.
The only other one here that I really love is Own The Look. But not to the point of chasing it down, because it has some awesome dupes.

I guess I’ve just been so accustomed to busting out the burgundies, wines, and berries that I never considered wearing a color like that after August. Also… because the aforementioned colors are what I look forward to ALL year! LOL I still haven’t used the Raw Power eyeshadow from KVD because it “wasn’t in season” yet.

Didn’t I say in a post a few months ago that I didn’t have any makeup rules? Ummm… I’d like to retract that statement. 😉

I really wish that there were more lavender hued lip shades like Strutting Fabulous around in permanent ranges. The ones I own are were from limited edition collections so I have to wear them sparingly!

Eh pass. Kind of odd, I remember getting so worked up I didn’t get any Mattenes when they came out eons ago with Cult of Cherry (Why yes I have been in the online makeup game for a long time, haha.) but seeing these makes me wonder if they’re inferior products to the old ones, or if the bar just used to be lower. Maybe both? Le sigh.

Do you know if these new products will be made in China? I saw Pamela Anderson post a very informative request to MAC to stop this from happening, but I have no idea if the change has gone through. Do you know if these products have been tested on animals?

Christine Avatar

I have no idea where they were made, sorry! I believe mostly the brushes and holiday kits are manufactured in China with most manufacturing in Canada/Italy/Germany otherwise. Please inquire with MAC for latest information regarding testing and manufacturing.

Hi Chistine, thanks for answering!

Yeah, I know, I saw the swatches. But over the years they usually come somehow diferrent in shade/tone…

In my country any kind of imported products is very expensive, so your reviews and swatches really save me a lot of money, since I don’t have any Mac stores or any brand like this near by.

XOXO

I just got Strutting faboulous even though I have so many lavendar lippies… looks amazing and love the mattenes… personal pick I might have to pick up at store launch… or a back up for strutting faboulous.
