MAC Fashion Legacy Retro Matte Liquid Lipstick
MAC Fashion Legacy Retro Matte Liquid Lipstick ($20.00 for 0.17 fl. oz.) is described as a an “intense fire truck tred.” It’s a bright, medium-dark orange-toned red with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had rich pigmentation with a smooth consistency that delivered even coverage. It was easy to apply and dried down in about a minute or less. The color wore well for seven and a half hours, but the formula was moderately drying after four hours of wear. ColourPop Lullaby (LE, $6.00) is darker (95% similar). MAC Mademoiselle Retro Matte Liquid Lipstick ($20.00 for 0.17 fl. oz.) is described as a “bright creamy coral.” It’s a light-medium, yellowed peach with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had mostly opaque pigmentation, though it had some visible streakiness at some angles (sometimes they were hardly noticeable). There was slight “cracking’ when I smiled, where you can see the color pulling away. This shade lasted for five hours before it had faded unevenly enough to require removal or reapplication. It was one of the more unique shades (to me) within this range, due to the yellower tones. Urban Decay Interrogate (DC, $18.00) is glossier (90% similar). ColourPop Platform (LE, $6.50) is lighter (90% similar). ColourPop Exaggerated (LE, $7.00) is darker, cooler, glossier (90% similar). ColourPop She Cute (LE, $7.00) is lighter, cooler (85% similar). MAC To Matte With Love Retro Matte Liquid Lipstick ($20.00 for 0.17 fl. oz.) is described as a “bright raspberry.” It’s a medium-dark, warm fuchsia pink with a matte finish. It was richly pigmented, and the color applied with really smooth, even coverage as well. While it was drying, it did wear for almost eight hours. ColourPop Brooklyn (P, $7.00) is lighter, glossier (90% similar). Charlotte Tilbury Electric Poppy (P, $37.00) is cooler, glossier (90% similar). FORMULA OVERVIEW | MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipstick ($20.00 for 0.17 fl. oz.) is pigmented, liquid lipstick formula that dries down to a flat, matte finish that is mostly transfer-proof. They have a runnier mousse-like consistency; it is not quite mousse-like in thickness, but it is not as runny as some liquid lipstick formulas–somewhere in-between there. The formula of these is thicker than their Pro Longwear Lustre Lipcolours (which is like the OG of matte liquid lipstick to me). The lighter shades are the least forgiving and most of them “crack” as soon as they dry down and I move my lips or smile. They don’t flake off in chunks, and most of them fade relatively evenly. I get slight transfer on occasion when drinking anything more than water (e.g. latte), and while a lot of the color will make it through a meal, it will vary depending on the oil-content of your meal. They do respond well to layering or touch-ups after there is an initial layer done. They dry down within thirty seconds to two minutes (darker shades took longer to dry), and I was able to manipulate the color as it was drying down without lifting the color entirely. Some shades appeared streaky during initial application, but once it dried down, most of the streaks disappeared (kind of like nail polish can self-level). I found the formula moderately drying after three to six hours of wear. They are vanilla-scented but have no discernible taste.

Hmmm, still not seeing any must have shades, but at least they are getting the formula right.
It definitely seems like a good range for a permanent product, but I’m surprised there aren’t more on-trend shades.
Yeah MAC seem to good at putting out shades I want only in Limited Edition collections. lol
Retro matte looks nice, but I feel like the nudes like mademoiselle in matte would be impossible to pull off for me.
Totally understand, Linda!
Such a mixed bag on this line. I hate liquid matte lipstick (I’ve tried and no, it’s not working) so rarely comment, but I’m marveling at the inconsistency here. Some shades look pretty decent, while others are perfectly horrid and draw so much painful attention to each and every vertical lip line. These reviews are truly helpful when you get wide swings in quality such as this.
It’s interesting how that works! This formula seems to emphasize the texture of the lips (kind of like it just looks clingy/drier) but not always.
Both of the better scoring choices are lovely and don’t look quite as dry. I love a matte lip but I prefer a creamier one or a satin matte. If the lips have no dimension, they just look like powdery caterpillars.
I like satin if I want something more matte too!
Fashion Legacy looks the best on you! I finally summed up the courage to get Maybelline Craving Coral — bright orange red is usually not my color, was afraid it would look garish, but it looks surprisingly good, very brightening and cheery for the face. It’s a nice color to wear on Mondays
Thank you, Katherine! 🙂
I’m so glad Craving Coral surprised ya!
To Matte With Love and Fashion Legacy are both gorgeous shades! Although, I must say that I love Fashion Legacy the best on you, Christine!
I just don’t know if this formula can be my “gateway” into liquid mattes, though. The Tartiest or Nyx Velvet Suede formulas sound waaay more kind to dry lips living in a dry climate. But those Tarte names though! ?
Thank you, Nancy! I would definitely give the Tarte/NYX ones a try first, but KVD is still my favorite for the ones that do the full dry down.
Christine can you pleeeeease do a video on how you apply ALL your lipsticks so neatly….they’re always consistently so super neat. Please do one ty!
I don’t do anything special!
Did they really not take the opportunity to make a “Mattemoiselle” pun? I’m slightly disappointed.
LOL!
