Kat Von D Holiday 2017 Everlasting Liquid Lipstick Mini Set Review, Photos, Swatches
Holiday 2017
Kat Von D Holiday 2017 Everlasting Liquid Lipstick Mini Set ($49.00 for 0.80 oz.) contains eight, miniature-sized liquid lipsticks with seven shades from the permanent range and one, new and exclusive shade, Madrid. I thought the set coordinated nicely as an autumnal choice, not just a holiday one, though they are deeper, vampy shades so they may be less universally appealing. I’d love to see the brand put out trios and have a few options, like a neutral, bold, and vamp sets.
The quality was fairly consistent in the repeated shades with their full-sized versions that I had tested before–shades like Damned and Exorcism were under-pigmented and streakier in a single layer, while shades like Ludwig and Lovecraft were pigmented and applied beautifully. The set itself is a mixed bag, but the permanent versions were as well, so it’s not a situation where they’ve sacrificed quality just for the set. The shades are lacking are ones that would benefit greatly from a lip liner underneath. There were a few minor, but noticeable, discrepancies in color for a few shades, as noted below. I re-tested the shades that differed in texture but not ones that were consistent in texture with my full-sized tubes.
Value
A full-sized Everlasting Liquid Lipstick retails for $20.00 and contains 0.22 fl. oz. or $90.90/oz. The set contains eight shades each containing 0.10 fl. oz. (about half in size), which means there’s $72.73 worth of product in the set.

Ludwig
Ludwig is a muted, medium mauve with warm, rosy undertones and a matte finish. This seemed to be slightly darker compared to the permanent version but was very similar in consistency (thin, smooth, more watery than normal but did not make it hard to apply) and performance (six-hour wear, slightly drying).

Formula Overview

It is supposed to be a “long-wear, full coverage liquid lipstick with a smooth, matte finish.” Of the liquid lipsticks on the market that go and have a full dry-down, Kat Von D’s formula remains my favorite, as it is the easiest to apply with the kindest learning curve and lasts awhile.
Some shades are more drying than others, but typically they don’t get drying until after five to six hours of wear. They often wear anywhere from six to ten hours, depending on what you’ve had to eat or drink during the day. This formula is thin but not watery, has a longer dry down than most liquid lipsticks (but I noticed some of the newer shades dried to a mostly dry finish faster), and layers better than most (you can touch-up or add a second layer for more coverage).
It takes about a minute for it to mostly set, but it will remain a little tacky in places for up to three minutes so you’ll want to avoid pressing your lips together if it doesn’t seem totally dry initially. There isn’t a noticeable scent or taste. If you don’t mind the trade-off between very long, near-pristine wear and being drying, it’s worth checking out. As a bonus, these also come with one of the most generous amounts of products within the realm of liquid lipsticks!

Lovecraft
Lovecraft is a medium-dark pink with subtle, cool undertones and a flat, matte finish. It was slightly warmer and brighter compared to the permanent version I have. The consistency was smooth, lightweight, and thin but not watery, and it was easy to work with it to get even, opaque coverage on my lips. This shade lasted for over seven hours and felt drying after six hours of wear.

Sanctuary is a muted, medium-dark mauve with neutral-to-cool undertones and a flat, matte finish. The consistency was smooth, thin but not watery, and easy to work with on my lips. Hawkwind
Hawkwind is a muted, medium-dark brown with hints of warm, reddish plum paired with a flat, matte finish. The color was consistent with the full-sized tube I have, though I felt like the formula itself was just ever-so-slightly thinner and more watery, which made it a touch less pigmented compared to the full-sized tube but still very nearly opaque nonetheless. This shade wore well for seven hours and felt drying after five hours of wear.

Madrid
Madrid is a muted, dark plum with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had good pigmentation, though it was not quite opaque, with a thin, watery texture that felt runnier than ideal, as it made it harder to control along the edges. The liquid lipstick dried down to a flat, matte finish that was more smoothing than most in this type of formula. It wore well for seven and a half hours and was slightly drying after six hours of wear.

Exorcism
Exorcism is a blackened berry with subtle, cool undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque color coverage in a single layer, and se cond layer helped but did not completely fix the opacity/evenness issues as I had hoped. A lip liner underneath did more to provide a better, more even surface and helped fill in the lack of opacity from my experience. The texture was on the thinner side but did not feel runny, so it was fairly easy to apply along the edges. It lasted well for over eight hours and started to feel drying after six hours of wear.

Damned
Damned is a deep, reddish brown with a flat, matte finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation in a single layer, and again, a second layer helped improve the opacity but wasn’t as helpful for evening out the color overall, especially as this one seemed to pull and dry more into my lip lines than others. The lipstick wore well for over eight hours but felt drying after five and a half hours of wear.

Witches
Witches is a deep black with neutral-to-cool undertones and a matte finish. It had good color payoff but did not apply evenly, so it looked patchy in places with some color settling and drying down in my lip lines. The texture was more watery compared to my full-sized version, which made it harder to apply along the edges without getting wobbles (from my unsteady hand). This shade seemed to take awhile to dry down, and even when it did not transfer, it seemed to have a barely-there sheen (still fairly matte) compared to how flat many of the other shades look when dried down. The color stayed on well for six and a half hours and felt drying after five hours of wear.

Even with owning 3 of these shades I still got this set last week. 😉 Damned, Exorcism, & Witches.
I just don’t know what is up with the pigments used in the Damned colour here. Other formulas have issues with this shade and my 2 Damned still are water/sheer in colour as well. lol
Having a mini of shades you like is a GOOD thing, to take with.
I like the first five but already have lovecraft. I don’t think I can justify the price for only half the set. I agree that they should do smaller sets in color families.
Hi Christine,
Is Madrid going to be sold individually and not exclusive to the set? It is listed as permanent here. I may just look for it on it’s own. Your lip swatches are super helpful! Love them.
That’s just my stupidity showing, Jessica! I did not mark it as LE.
Noooooo please don’t say that! Oh well, maybe in the future it will be available on it’s own.
I really don’t like the EL formula..drier than dirt. Got plenty of dry, dusty sand where I am..I can add dye and just wear that if I want something like that. Lol. Guess this is a pass for me:).
Ought not even pretend I won’t get this. But later, rather than sooner. Unlike the palette, don’t think it will sell out before the sale. Could be wrong though. Lovecraft is prob the only one I wouldn’t wear. I know, wear a black, but not a pink? Pretty much. Think I only have one of the shades, sanctuary, and Madrid is beautiful. Bet madrid goes perm later.
Thank you for your dupe list – I want Madrid, but already own everything else in that set I would wear. Anastasia Rum Punch here I come!
I recently tried this formula, in vampira I think. And it’s SO streaky and patchy. But I really want this kit regardless. I would use and wear every shade here!
This is a lovely set, though I wish Damned were better.
It’s a bit worrying to me that some of these shades are watery because the consistency of all KvD full-sized lippies I personally have are typically creamy and smooth ? Makes me worry that they cheaper out a bit for the set.
In general, I feel like the brand has made some of the more recent releases more watery than the earlier releases 🙁
You have satisfied my curiosity for what black lipstick looks like when worn! I agree with your assessment about the set leaning more to autumn than to the holidays.
Haha! Glad I could help 😉
Easy pass . I don’t see a single shade that would be flattering for me .
Pretty darn good set! Especially for those curious to try out the ELL formula in a decent array of shades. For myself, though; I’m good over here with my full-size vial of Hawkwind, plus more dupes for most of these shades than I know what to do with!
Thank you for the review! I just wanted to mention that the colours of this set look beautiful on you – perfect for fall. ??
I want this set. But I must resist because I don’t need it and I already own enough lipstick to wear a different shade every day for nearly three months.
Four of the shades won’t work on me. I already know that Ludwig (though I love, love, love the name!) looks dreadful on me. It comes off as too nude, making my lips blend into the rest of my face. Exorcism, Damned, and Witches are too dark for my coloring (sounds more like a Halloween set). Exorcism doesn’t look that dark on you, Christine, but judging from other shades I’ve seen on you that I own, I know it will look twice as dark on me!!!
As for the four shades I like, I have a several of the dupes on the list for Lovecraft, Sanctuary, and Madrid, and one of the dupes for Hawkwind. Although I’d love to have these cute little minis, it’s money I don’t need to spend. (Unless I can find someone who likes the other four colors to go in on it with me…hmmmm…)
Kat Von D, your cool holiday releases so far are driving me crazy! LOL
Ordered!
I hope Sephora gets my free gifts right this time, for a change. Wishful thinking?
I’m glad to hear that value is good for this set. I have had Witches and Sanctuary on my wishlist for quite sometime, so this kit is perfect for me. I feel like I don’t wear matte lip colors as much lately, so I will probably wait around until the sale and see if it’s still available.
You’re always so beautiful Christine, but this makeup you’re wearing here is absolutely gorgeous! You look stunning!
