Kat Von D 10th Anniversary Eyeshadow Palette Review, Photos, Swatches
10th Anniversary
Kat Von D 10th Anniversary 16-Pan Eyeshadow Palette ($52.00 for 0.96 oz.) is a new, limited edition with an array of shades from neutrals to pops of color across mattes and shimmers. It performed decently and would be a palette that only makes sense to get if one uses primer normally, prefers their mattes to be more buildable, and/or likes using their shimmers wet (a few were drier). The mattes felt drier to the touch and weren’t as powdery as the brand’s typical matte eyeshadow formula.

Adele
Adele is a dark brown with neutral-to-warm undertones and a matte finish. It had good pigmentation that was buildable to full coverage with an additional half layer. The texture was smooth and silky without being powdery, though it seemed a little drier as I noticed it didn’t blend out as readily as anticipated (but less fallout and better adhesion). It wore well for eight hours on me.

Malice
Malice is a muted, medium-dark copper with warm, red undertones and a matte finish. The eyeshadow’s color coverage was opaque in one layer, while the texture was soft, smooth, and blendable without being powdery or too thin. It was easy to work with and stayed on nicely for eight and a half hours on me before I noticed any fading.

Egypt
Egypt is a medium gold with warm, yellow undertones and a metallic finish along with flecks of larger micro-glitter. The texture was smooth and slightly dense but not stiff in the pan. It had good pigmentation but required a dampened brush for really smooth, even, and opaque coverage that had minimal fallout. The glittery bits did not bind that well with the base except when I used it with a dampened brush, but then there was still fallout when worn. It wore well for eight hours with some fallout (there wasn’t that much glitter, but it seemed like most of it had fallen during the day).

Melanie
Melanie is a soft beige with warmer undertones and a matte finish. The consistency was soft, silky, and just a touch powdery in the pan. I noticed it had a tendency to gray some of the deeper shades, so take care when applying it above any of those shades. It had opaque pigmentation that was prone to sheering out (so I typically only saw semi-opaque coverage out of it in practice) that stayed on well for just over seven and a half hours on me.

Alexandra is a bright, medium peach with warm, yellow undertones and pink-to-peach shifting sparkle over a more frosted finish. The pigmentation was excellent, while the texture looked rougher in the pan but was surprisingly smooth and more cream-like without having too much slip. Catherine
Catherine is a medium purple with warmer undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. It had nearly opaque color payoff paired with a denser, drier texture that was better applied with fingertips, dampened brushes, or otherwise pressed and really packed on with a flat, synthetic brush. Softer and fluffier brushes just did not work well for this and seemed to deposit a fraction of product and gave it a faded, washed-out appearance. It wore well for seven and a half hours on me with slight fallout.

Kelly is a medium, plummy-brown base with blue-to-teal shifting sparkle paired with a metallic finish. It had good pigmentation with a moderately dense consistency that did require a little more pressing and pushing to get it to translate onto the lid with a dry brush (alternatively, use a dampened brush, fingertip, or a flat brush for improved application–best to worst results in that order). Sarah
Sarah is a soft, grayish-taupe with cool undertones and a matte finish. It had medium, buildable coverage paired with a soft, lightly powdery texture. I found it was easy to blend out the shade, particularly when using it as a transition shade, but it was prone to sheering out so it tended to work best over larger areas when blending was required or else patted and packed onto lid space with minimal blending (to avoid sheerness). It wore well for seven and a half hours on me.

Carolyn
Carolyn is a faded, deep teal with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had medium coverage in a single layer, which was somewhat buildable but required primer and three to four layers for more opaque coverage. The texture was slightly dusty in the pan and prone to sheering out as well as lifting up other matte shades when I tried to blend it into them. It was slightly better when I tried blending it over primer. This shade stayed on nicely for eight hours before fading a bit.

Chad
Chad is a deep, cobalt blue with cool undertones and a mostly matte finish. The pigmentation was decent and somewhat buildable, but the texture was drier, dusty, and very prone to sheering out and lifting up other colors layered underneath it, even over primer. I expected the intensity to come through better applied, but it wasn’t the case. The only way I felt this was workable was patted onto the lid for opaque coverage but using other shades to blend the edges and around it. It lasted for seven and a half hours on me.

I have a dupe for every color in this palette. Although, the closest I have for LaLa is Subculture’s Destiny. It looks to be about 80% similar. But part of me still wants this palette b/c I feel like I’ll reach for it a lot more than the Saints & Sinners’ palette due to the bulkiness of S&S packaging. But I can’t justify it, especially with those few C’s & D’s that popped up. Had this been an A rating, I probably would have picked it up regardless of the dupes that I have. The larger my collection gets, the pickier I become.
Earlier, I found that you post swatches and dupes ahead of the review, at times. As was true of kvd 10 eye. Had a TMS face slap. Duped on all but the bright green. Said unless the palette was A-, would not get. Probably my story and sticking to it. Now to look for green dupes. Michele Binxcat found the mattes to be far less quality, which I assume will be true here. Generally valid observation for kvd mattes, anyway. I just have to accept that I need more shadow like I need a wasp nest in the stash, and use CP for holes.
Much better grade than I was expecting! If I hadn’t already purchased ABH Subculture Palette plus her own Metal Matte Palette, I would have likely bought this in a heartbeat. Not often I see my name as a shade for anything, so having my namesake in here definitely felt pretty cool, tbh! However, I have MAC Tete-A-Teint, so, I guess I’m good.
Your eye looks are so inspirational! Love it!
I like this palette more than I thought I would and I love the colors.
I was so tempted to break my no buy for this but now I’m just glad the shades I liked the most weren’t the best performing ones in the palette.
Same here! I guess it’s money saved 🙂
I expected a lot worse after seeing your swatch submissions. It’s a shame that the lowest scoring shades are the ones that led me to buy this (beside the packaging of course). At least now I know what I’m getting in the mail…
I’d like to try a kvd palette some day this doesn’t draw me in.
I’m so glad this didn’t get an A, haha! There are a lot of colors I love in it, and I just love the layout and look of the palette. It’s interesting that this has the same 0.96 volume of shadows as Saint + Sinner but 16 colors as opposed to 24. I hope she does another fun color spectrum for the holidays that is in this compact shape.
Although the palette is very pretty, with lots of bright shades, I don’t really like it. The matte shades in my favourite colours are average and the shimmery ones are not those I would use.
I like some of the matte colors, but they didn’t really perform well…
I am very happy that this palette does not interest me. I was obsessed with getting the Saint & Sinner palette when it came out, and I finally got it several months ago…and I rarely use it.
I just got this palette. Friday I used Malice layered under UD Slowburn*, and it worked really well. I’m looking forward to playing around with the rest of the palette.
*Typical UD Electric palette disclaimer: Slowburn/Savage/Jilted/Urban contain a red pigment deemed safe in Europe but not tested in US, cannot be officially recommended for eye use in US for that reason, those with sensitive eyes shouldn’t use it on eyes at all, anyone who does use it on eyes shouldn’t tightline with it.
I ALWAYS wondered what that disclaimer was for!?!? They say not for eye use, but then don’t say why!!!! Which left me VERY curious WHY an eyeshadow wouldn’t be for eye use!!!! Really, Thank you for this explanation!!!!
You’re welcome! That’s what the excellent representative told me when I called UD customer service after I first got the Electric palette.
I was bummed that the palette ran so warm (she is one of the few that puts out palettes that at least evenly split warm and cool most of the time) but the quality isn’t here so it makes it less of a disappointment!
I really only love two of the shades, Lala and Sarah. Sarah I have better dupes and although I don’t really have anything approaching Lala, I am not going to buy a palette for one color. I do love the artwork and originally felt like I might pick up the palette just for the art but after thinking about it I decided against. I am sure that she will come out with another beautiful palette down the road and hopefully it will have more shades that I like.
My faves as well. Sarah is covered, but my dupes for Lala are the Zoevas, and they seem darker, less bright irl. Might have to check the Nars eyepaint…if Hell Gate lip cover ever is restocked. Idk, not wanting a palette is a good thing, but this was disappointingly uneven in performance. As to the totality vs stash, not good when owned dupes are better! Kind of leaves a metalmatte taste in your mouth, iykwim.
Well, they d/c’d Mozambique. Oh, well. Their only green in eye paint is snake eyes, prob closer to Leafar. Whatever.
This palette just really has never appealed to me, and I’m thankful because it definitely saves my wallet. I was overall really underwhelmed by the anniversary collection. There are some interesting colors, but I can dupe just about all of it. Oh well! Money saved for things I do love! 🙂
I picked up the palette right after it came out. I most definitely didn’t need another palette but I’m keeping it anyway. After using it I had a feeling those lovely blues and the purple would likely bring down the score as I found those three the most disappointing compared to how I thought they’d perform. (Especially the purple! How did they go from making Danzig to that shade?)
I have a number of palettes with a bit of a rainbow color selection and this one feels the most usable for me — or rather one I could reach for and still pull together a look fairly quickly and easily. I’m guessing it’s because of the mix of the lighter, darker and neutral shades, including a number of transition options. I feel like it gives me a wide selection without being quite as intimidating as some of the other rainbow or colorful palettes I have like Urban Decay’s Electric. Of course I have dupes for most shades, but if I’m being honest there’s no way I’m going to pull out five palettes to use one shade from each to create a similar look anyway. I also think the shades are layed out rather well. Something about this layout just makes me feel inspired.
The last part is important: being honest about how and what you use – that’s why some people really love and want cohesive palettes and others are just fine pairing a few palettes together!
I got this palette and everything swatched well, only 1 shade that was iffy, Sarah the matte gray, which was dry and powdery. I’ve tested some of the shadows, the browns/oranges were good, the olive applied well, and the bright blue was pigmented but hard to blend out. So far, pretty happy with it, and love the artwork on the cover!
I only had this palette a few days, but I’m really pleased with it so far. More so than I was actually expecting to be. I was a bit worried it would be a Saint + Sinner retread, but it’s enough different that I’m happy. Melanie is a perfect base/transition shade for me. The only thing it’s missing is a brow bone highlight that works on me, but I don’t mind pulling in a single or using my face highlighter of the day.
As a matte taupe hater, I was surprised by how much I like the color of Sarah. In the pan it’s “blah,” but it was really flattering on. It further surprised me by not turning muddy on me. I accidentally put it on one eye before putting on primer, and while it didn’t blend as easily as the one with primer, it wasn’t bad at all. I normally wear primer, though, so all I can say for the other colors is that they all worked great over it.
How does this pallets compare to Urban Decays Full Spectrum pallet??? Are they different enough to justify buying BOTH or not??? Anyone know???
You can compare any two palettes side-by-side here: https://www.temptalia.com/makeup-dupe-list/#pvp
Here is a comparison of this compared to Full Spectrum: https://www.temptalia.com/palette-vs-palette/?palette_1_search=Kat+Von+D+10th+Anniversary&palette_1=340682&palette_2_search=Urban+Decay+Full+Spectrum&palette_2=262244
I’m okay with this grade! A B+ isn’t the best and it also doesn’t mean it’s a bad grade, but I’m still happy that I was able to get this palette. I always prime my eyes and wet my brush for shimmers so I am not too concerned.
I really love the last 6 cool-toned shades but let’s be honest, most of her palettes have a dark blue and vivid green. Think this is going to be a pass for me but it is rather lovely for those who do not have her previous palettes.
I picked it up and really like it. Though, I always use primer under eyeshadows because I have such oily lids otherwise. With UD Primer Potion, I find that it performs quite well.
Just used Kelly today. The only problem I’ve personally noticed with it so far is that I got a lot of fallout under my eyes.
I have only posted something on here once, I guess I should post more, but l almost bought this at Sephora last night, but then told myself I already have way too many palettes and with this review, I am glad I did not buy this.
I was not going to buy this palette, since I do own a lot of the colors already in other palettes, but I did. I have to tell you the matte in this palette are awesome. I do like the packaging since I think her previous palettes are always too big and bulky hard to put away or storage. I missed out on Mi vida loca palette and I gave away the Metal Matte palette. This palette is pretty and easy to storage. I’m enjoying it. (honestly I didn’t think I will like that much, I kept my receipt but I’m keeping it). LOL
Yes!!! I really wanted to get this one and was waiting for the rating. So glad it made the new minimum I wait for because, so for Christine you’ve been on it! Almost every time I either miss checking with your site or go it anyway, I have regrets.
