Huda Beauty Mauve Obsessions Eyeshadow Palette Review, Photos, Swatches
Mauve
Huda Beauty Mauve Obsessions Eyeshadow Palette ($27.00 for 0.35 oz.) contains a mix of warm pinks, plums, and burgundy in matte and shimmer finishes. The eyeshadows are just shy of most full-sized eyeshadows (0.039 oz. vs. 0.05 oz.), and the palette itself is the size of typical eyeshadow quads. Per the brand, the formula is supposed to be “highly pigmented” with a “smooth and blendable texture.”
It worked better in practice than swatched, but there was room for improvement across most of the shades in the palette as some of the mattes were quite powdery and that impeded pigmentation, while a couple of others were drier and weren’t as easy to blend or to apply.

Mauve #1
Mauve #1 is a muted, dark burgundy with subtle, warm red undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-sheer, buildable pigmentation (up to mostly opaque) with a moderately powdery texture, which was part of the reason it didn’t have great coverage. It was blendable, though, and applied better than I expected based on how it swatched initially. This shade wore well for eight hours on me before fading.

Mauve #2
Mauve #2 is a medium coral with warm, orange undertones and brighter, pink shimmer. It had good color payoff but had a drier, denser texture that took a bit of extra effort to apply evenly and diffuse along the edges unless I used a dampened brush with it. The eyeshadow lasted for seven and a half hours on me.

Mauve #4
Mauve #4 is a medium-dark red with warm undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. It had rich color payoff that applied evenly to bare skin, but the texture was a bit looser and had some fallout during application as the larger shimmer/sparkle did not bind with the base powder perfectly. It lasted for eight and a half hours but had a bit of fallout over time.

Mauve #6
Mauve #6 is a muted, medium-dark red with warm undertones and a semi-matte finish. The texture was drier and firmer in the pan, which made it harder to pickup with a brush and the application less even, as it reacted to natural oils on the skin more than other shades in the palette. It had semi-opaque pigmentation that was buildable to opaque coverage. This shade lasted for eight hours on me.

Mauve #7 is a muted, deep plum with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. The colors look so lovely in the palette but I’m sure I have at least two dupes for all of them . That plus the so-so rating makes this an easy pass..
These eye shadow colors look horrible on me, unfortunately.
Are you concerned about these being made in China? Not on the cruelty-free issue, don’t mean to bring that up! To each her own on that. I’m asking more from a safety standpoint, with China not being renowned for clean, healthy, safe manufacturing.
I’m asking because I bought Smokey before realizing they were made there, and now I’m debating whether I can trust using it. If I know ahead of time, I don’t buy from China, but I already bought it. I’m considering returning but then I also wonder how many things I have that might be made there that I never thought twice about.
I understand if you don’t want to get into that discussion, but if it’s okay I’d like to know your thoughts on that and whether you know if these are “safe”.
No, I’m not personally concerned about the palettes being made in China.
I’m not sure there’s any way for me to know if it’s “safe”? Short of being the one in charge of manufacturing or paying for lab testing of the finished product, it’s not something I would have any insight into – the same is true for any brand, any product. Brands made in [insert your preferred country] could always do illegal or borderline legal things to their products without consumers knowing until something goes wrong or, even if they are doing things properly, some ingredient used could be proven unsafe or a some batch of ingredients could have been contaminated or tainted (and again, a mistake or mishap, not a deliberate action).
I haven’t been able to find as much (in support or against) with respect to cosmetics other than what I’ve heard being in the industry, but in a lot of other manufacturing segments, it’s more documented. Ingredients can be imported during manufacturing – just because it’s made in X doesn’t mean parts weren’t obtained from somewhere else – it would really depend on the labeling laws, which were confusing for cosmetics last I tried to read about it, and the laws would definitely vary by country. Mica is a known ingredient as it is often sourced under poorer working conditions with Indian being a top producer, and it’s in a lot of products (Lush has a write-up about why they removed natural mica from their supply chain: https://uk.lush.com/ingredients/synthetic-mica, and Vogue has a good write-up on mica in general here: http://www.vogue.co.uk/article/skincare-alphabet-what-is-mica).
Here are some interesting tidbits with respect to fashion:

I know it happens in dog food as well – not all ingredients (often vitamins/minerals) are local, some are imported. I think dog food has done a better job labeling where any non-local ingredients are sourced (and which ones).
Anyway, there are lots of choices on the market so you should always make the choice that’s right for you, personally – makeup is to make you feel better, not worse! 🙂
And if anyone has a good source for understanding “Made in” labeling for cosmetics, I’d greatly appreciate it!
Thanks so much for your thoughts and insights! It’s not something I thought a lot about until recently, so I appreciate hearing your take on this.
Great post Christine! True we don’t know what outside manufactures can bring in. Also, Essence eyeshadows do state they contain carmine which doesn’t bother me at all and being a makeup junkie but some could be sensitive to it. I bought all at Target and glad I did cause they all have been removed don’t think they are coming back I do like the sets bronze is my favorite. Princess mascaras are my favorite I didn’t know I had lashes. Lol! Anyways, good points you make.
Thank you for bringing this up. I don’t buy products made in PRC China. I don’t care if the materials for the case are,but not the actual product. I didn’t realize this is.
I had high hopes when I first heard that a Mauve palette was part of the line, but super disappointed when I saw it. I don’t see what’s mauve in this palette. It’s just more of the trendy deep pinks and bordeaux.
You said my thoughts exactly Lulle! If I was to wear these shades my eyes would look terribly bloodshot, and make me look ill. I sure wish someone would make a good quality cool-toned mauve-themed palette! Or do separate cool to neutral, and warm to neutral palettes. It’s not worth buying a palette if I can only use a few of the shades in them.
On the plus side, this years trends have been a boon for the often ignored WOC, and I’m very happy about that!
?
Even though I’m decidedly “on board” with the red eyeshadow trend, this just leans way too far into my no man’s land of TOO PINK. As in, I would absolutely appear to be suffering from Pink-eye if I went this full-on!
I bought it and used it for a while. I think it’s very easy to blend out these eyeshadows. I dont mind using finger to apply those shimmer shades so i don’t consider this is a problem. The only thing that I would complain about this palette is the fact that colours are too red to be called mauve for me.
Doh! Just ordered this so I could take advantage of the Sephora sale. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for good performance. Love your reviews!
Mine came yesterday and I wore it today. I did not have too much trouble with blending but I still am working out how to wear these colors without looking like my eyes are bruised. It has been a long time since I used anything but nudes.
Gorgeous!
I think it is similar to the Nyx Sugar High which I have and love it but brighter.?
Darn I wanted it to be good 🙁
Although these are not my kind of shades, I know that lots of people wear and love them. Unfortunately this palette is so so in terms of its quality.
I purchased this palette during the sale to use while away. I don’t have shades like these, and was able to put together a simple eyelook. I have a learning curve with the pink and red tones as I amplified a vibrant shade that I was wanting to tone down. At this price point, I’m satisfied to use this to see if these are shades I’d enjoy wearing.
I’m quite disappointed with this one and the warm bronze one. I don’t find them to blend that well and the darker shades just blend into one color so I can’t really built it up the way I’d like.
Theoretically, I could love the hell out of this palette, but it’s just so disappointing. It’s not that all the colors are bad so much as they could have been so much better. Colors 4&9 are the only ones that don’t feel ‘off’ to me and even they are only Bs.
