Element of Surprise

ColourPop Element of Surprise 12-Pan Pressed Shadow Palette ($16.00 for 0.36 oz.) is a mix of warm neutrals, reds, and berries with both mattes and shimmers. It’s another winning palette from the brand if the types of shades appeal to you, and the quality rivals many palettes I’ve tested this holiday season at double and triple the price.

I really enjoy ColourPop products overall, and their pressed eyeshadow formula is hard to beat at the price, but I really wish they would make it clearer when they include shades that are “not intended for use in the immediate eye area” or exclude them from palettes that look like eyeshadow palettes in all the meaningful ways. These shades are listed as “not intended for use in the immediate eye area” per the ingredient lists found on their website: Silk Street, Opulent, and Blank Canvas. Other brands also sell products that look like eyeshadows but carry the same warning, and it is often related to the pigments used in them and in the case of some instances, those warnings aren’t necessary in places like Canada or the EU (as they are safe for using on the eye under those regulations), but it’s hard to know without really diving deep into the ingredient list each and every time.

Feels

Feels is a bright, cool lavender with a sparkling sheen. It had good pigmentation with a moderately dense texture that felt a smidgen chunky in the pan, but it applied better on bare skin than I would have expected. I expect that it would pop and do more for brightening the area if applied with a dampened brush,t hough. The color stayed on well for seven and a half hours and had a smidgen of fallout over time.

Formula Overview

$4.50/0.05 oz. - $90.00 Per Ounce

The new Pressed Powder Shadow formula is supposed to be “highly pigmented” with an “ultra-velvety and silky” texture that is “long-wearing” and “adheres easily to the eyes.” Most of the shades have semi-opaque to opaque pigmentation that applies well to bare skin, blends out without issue, and lasts for seven to eight hours.

The matte eyeshadows tend to be a little more powdery, though soft and finely-milled, in the pan, while the shimmers have a creamier, dense consistency. Occasionally, the more sparkly or metallic shades apply better with fingertips or a dampened brush.

Late Night

Late Night is a medium, rosy copper with warm undertones and a sparkling, metallic sheen. There seemed to be fine glitters in the product, so there was a touch of fallout during application when I used it dry, but if I used it with a dampened brush, it applied better and minimized the fallout. It had opaque color payoff that wore well for eight hours before creasing faintly.

Silk Street

Silk Street is a medium-dark berry with strong, cool undertones and a matte finish. It had good color coverage that applied evenly to bare skin and blended out fairly well, but it wasn’t as easy to use as other shades in the palette as the texture was on the drier and thinner side. The color started to fade on me after eight and a half hours of wear.

Formula Overview

$4.50/0.05 oz. - $90.00 Per Ounce

The new Pressed Powder Shadow formula is supposed to be “highly pigmented” with an “ultra-velvety and silky” texture that is “long-wearing." The way the Pressed Pigments differ is that they're not intended for usage on the immediate eye area.

The majority of the shades are semi-opaque to opaque in coverage, blend out fairly well, and can sometimes be a bit drier/more powdery compared to typical matte shades. They often wear eight to nine hours on me before fading, but many shades in the Pressed Pigment family leave some staining behind.

NOTICE: All products categorized under "Pigment" carry a warning in the US that the product is "not intended for use in the immediate eye area." Brands in the US typically market these products as "Pigments" (instead of "Eyeshadow"), and there is often a warning on the back of packaging or the label. The product includes color additives that are not approved for usage on the eyes per the FDA. Some color additives in "Pigments" have no usage restrictions in the EU, per CosIng, and can be used on the eyes. We recommend checking ingredients to confirm current safety assessment/restrictions: FDA/CosIng.

Rayon

Rayon is a medium-dark orange with warm, reddish undertones and a metallic sheen. It had rich pigmentation that covered the skin with opaque coverage in one layer. The texture was denser with heavy shimmer, and it had a tendency to skip a bit on bare lids when used dry, so it was a shade that did better over primer or with a dampened brush (or fingertip). It lasted for eight and a half hours on me before creasing faintly.

Go With the Flow

Go With the Flow is a medium peach with warm, orange undertones and a matte finish. The pigmentation was nearly opaque, while the consistency was soft, silky, and just a bit powdery in the pan, but it did not appear dry or go on unevenly on the lid. It wore well for eight hours before fading noticeably.

Subdue

Subdue is a light-medium lavender with subtle, warm undertones and a metallic sheen. The color payoff was mostly opaque, though it needed a second layer for truly opaque coverage. The texture was moderately dense with larger sparkle, so it did not apply as evenly as desired with a dry brush but was easily improved by using a primer or a dampened brush for application. It stayed on nicely for eight hours on me.

Opulent

Opulent is a bright, medium-dark fuchsia with cool, blue undertones and a pearl finish. The eyeshadow was richly pigmented and had a dense texture that was still easy enough to pick up with a brush but would need a heavier hand compared to the other shades to achieve that full coverage result. It blended out well and lasted for eight and a half hours on me.

Peace of Mind

Peace of Mind is a medium-dark coppery red with warm undertones and a pearly sheen. The color payoff was opaque in a single layer, while the consistency was soft, slightly dense but easy to apply and blend out on the lid. It lasted for eight hours on me.

Comments that do not adhere to our comment policy may be removed. Discussion and debate are highly encouraged but we expect community members to participate respectfully. Please keep discussion on-topic, and if you have general feedback, a product review request, an off-topic question, or need technical support, please contact us!

Please help us streamline the comments' section and be more efficient: double-check the post above for more basic information like pricing, availability, and so on to make sure your question wasn't answered already. Comments alerting us to typos or small errors in the post are appreciated (!) but will typically be removed after errors are fixed (unless a response is needed).

We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! Thank you for understanding!

For what it’s worth re: ingredients, I’ve had allergic reactions to bright purple eyeshadows from Smashbox and MUFE in the past, but not to Silk Street (and that alone made the palette worthwhile for me, I was heartbroken when I realized I had an allergy to purple eyeshadow pigment).

Also, both Rayon and Subdue are STUNNING with glitter glue!

The warning is due to Red Lake pigments (7 & 28, I think) – they are approved as eye safe everywhere except the USA… and they are considered safe for use in lipsticks and for skin contact.

Labyrinth is such a beautiful shade!
