Urban Decay Junkie Vice Lipstick Palette Overview, Photos, & Swatches
Urban Decay Junkie Vice Lipstick Palette
Urban Decay Junkie Vice Lipstick Palette ($35.00 for 0.24 oz.) is a limited edition palette that includes 12-pans of lipstick with all shades from the brand’s permanent range of colors. There are two variations available, and between the two palettes, there are three shades that overlap–714, Big Bang, and Firebird. Junkie is slightly cooler in tone (particularly the second row) and includes a few less “traditional” shades. This palette is exclusive to Sephora and should launch sometime in September (I don’t have an exact date).
Value
A full-sized Vice Lipstick retails for $17.00 and contains 0.11 oz., which works out to be $154.55/oz. The palette retails for $35.00 and contains 0.24 oz., which works out to be $145.83/oz. — that’s actually impressive, because it’s just small enough that I thought it might be more expensive by the ounce, but one could easily see the value in having 12 shades for $1.00 more than the cost of two full-sized shades. Another way to look at value is by how many shades there are, which would out to be $2.92 per shade. There is also a twist-up lip brush included in the palette, and there is obviously some value there.
It is important to think about your own habits and preferences, though, because not everyone applies their lip colors with a brush or will take the extra time to do so. It is also less portable than carrying one shade in your bag for touch-ups during the day. I think the palette is small enough to travel well, but it is still a medium-sized palette. If you are the type of person who likes to apply their lipstick with a brush (or doesn’t mind having to do so) and will carry the palette with them/isn’t concerned about touch-ups, it is a great value.
Overview
As I just swatched the 120-shade line a few months ago, I’m not going to be extensively reviewing or photographing these (there are just so, so many lip color releases this year that I’m behind as is and would like to feature other brands and formulas as well!). I would consider this an overview or initial impressions, rather than an in-depth review. I hope you understand! 🙂
What I did do was test several shades from the palette, ones that did not perform as well in full-size and ones that did, as well as checking across finishes, for consistency with the full-size shades. In general, the colors, finishes, and application remained the same across the shades. The biggest difference being the texture, as applying directly from the tube yielded more product on the lips than when applying from the pan with a lip brush–this is inherent between the two types of application, as I get a similar weight and feel if I apply the same color from the full-sized, twist-up tube with a lip brush as I did by applying with a lip brush from the pan of color. Â Here are the differences I noticed in color/texture:
- Wrath had slightly more slip.
- Vanity Kills had less shine and application improved with a lip brush (compared to from the tube).
- Speedball was slightly less emollient, which made it easier to apply more evenly (but it still was uneven).
- Junkie seemed a smidgen less emollient but still gathered in lip lines.
Below, is a “round-up” of the 12 shades, and the ratings associated with each shade are based on testing the full-sized to give you an idea of the overall quality of the palette. You can also click to read the full review for each shade as well as view all swatches in the round-up.

Yes, I want this one! I was going to pick up Wrath last month but decided to wait. So I don’t own any of these shades in the palette.
Do you feel like Junkie improved in pigmentation because of it being less emollient?
I don’t, it’s actually the same, just less glossy, lol. I thought it would apply better but nay!
Same comment as with the earlier palette…I dislike using this type of format, though having all those shades would be so nice. But lipstick in pans just is not for me – I’d rarely use them and they’d end up going rancid.
I love that you know your style/preferences, Mariella 🙂
I’m always so impressed with your product breakdowns, Christine! It makes measuring the value of huge palettes like this so much easier, and I really appreciate it. This one seems like a dream for Urban Decay lipstick fans.
Happy I could help!
This is nice, affordable way to try out the UD Vice lipsticks, especially if you don’t wear these colors that often, it doesn’t make sense to buy a full size.
Very true, Katherine!
Out of the two, I’d probably skip this one.
Gotcha! 🙂
I will say that Whip works nicely over another shade to take it down a notch in intensity and add just a hint of shine and slip. I like it a lot for that use.
That’s great to hear, Linda! I can see it working well as a layering shade.
Not gonna lie, this is a beautiful palette. I do not like lip palettes but this is just gorgeous. It may just have to come home with me.
The mix of shades is nice! The palette itself is sleek – the wells are deeper, so I feel like you can keep them a bit cleaner and wipe down more easily without hitting the pan of product itself.
Like these both. Real sucker for small sizes, more variety. Plus, there are plenty that I did not wish to go full size on, but piqued my interest. Also, from my restricted/targeted makeup p.o.v., there aren’t many I would not wear. These appeal to me far more than multi shade releases from kvd, tarte, etc. Those always seem to have too many colors I deselect. They sound like good candidates for my small fridge, which wards off going bad on many products. And it may not be kale, but a tiny junkie might just hit the spot! One to/from Ulta, one/Sephora? I sniff Canada discrimination again. LE? Assume you said on the other review.
They’re both limited edition. Junkie is exclusive to Sephora (presumably includes Sephora Canada), and the other one (Blackmail) is exclusive to Ulta/Macy’s (which appears there’s no Canadian distributor for it).
This. This is the one for me! It has some shades that I already have on my wishlist, and some that I’ve wanted to to try, but not really wanting a full tube of. The retractable lip brush being included means I can load that up with enough to touch up during the day without bringing the whole thing with me. Ingenious on UD’s part to include that!
Woohoo! I’m excited for this to release and have more people try Vice shades!
Shoot. The value is so good, the size so compact, and the shades interesting and lovely — I may need to get both XD. Urban Decay has it exactly correct — lipstick is my vice. Haha!
Yeah, it is a great deal, since you can try so many shades, as long as you’re happy with having them in pan-format 😉
This would be good for pro MUA’s, makes sanitization a whole lot easier!
That’s true!
“Dear Urban Decay WHO decided to make two palettes but put in some colours in Both palettes? what if I want to buy Both?”
Definitely a Problem.
It is strange!
Is the formula in the palette the same as in the tube? Applies the same has same textures consistency… Etc?
Please read the Overview portion – I explain what I looked at and tested as well as what differences I found 🙂 As I said in the post, this is not an in-depth review shade-by-shade!
I really want this one; there are several shades I’ve been considering buying, and this would be cheaper. Lip palettes aren’t my favorite vehicle, but I don’t hate them. A set of minis would have been better, though.
Awesome! 😀 Hope you can get it!
The issue I have with lip palettes like this is that you’re paying for each one, but how likely is it that they’ll all work on you? You can make a less flattering eyeshadow work by sticking it with other shades, but a lip color is one shade only. I feel like it would make more sense to do palettes like this by color category (brights, reds, nudes, etc.) or tone (cool, warm, neutral) than a grab bag of shades from a massive line.
You can always mix and layer lip shades, actually, just as you can with eyeshadows 🙂 You can layer over a different-colored lip pencil, mix two or more shades together, apply one as a sheer layer and top with gloss, etc.
Ah, that’s true. It may just be my inherent laziness when it comes to applying things with lip brushes coming through, lol. I think of palettes like this as something easy for travel rather than hauling around a bunch of tubes.
