Golden Hour

Viseart Golden Hour 9-Pan Eyeshadow Palette ($49.00 for 0.49 oz.) is a new, Sephora-exclusive palette that features nine shades of eyeshadow in upgraded packaging. Each eyeshadow is square and slightly smaller compared to Viseart’s typical eyeshadow palettes (both their original as well as the Theory palettes), but they are by no means small–they’re 0.054 oz. a pop, which makes them in line with most full-sized, single eyeshadows. The quality of the eyeshadows was good overall with most shades being quite pigmented, blendable, and long-wearing, but of course, there were a few shades that had room for some minor improvements.

The color scheme is one we have seen before, though I suspect for some it will just be a nice, cohesive palette with high enough quality that it could work as a good, go-to option for that color combination as well. I could have definitely done without both Seine and Palais–I think they’re just too close in functionality to have in the same nine-pan palette.

Value

A full-sized, 12-pan Viseart Eyeshadow Palettes retail for $80.00 and contain 0.84 oz. or cost $95.23/oz.. The six-pan Viseart Theory Palettes retail for $45.00 and contain 0.42 oz. or cost $107.14/oz. The Golden Hour (nine-pan!) palette retails for $49.00 and contains 0.49 oz. or costs $100.00/oz., which seems like it was well-priced based on the amount of product contained in the palette. The packaging has a more luxurious feel on the Golden Hour palette, though the pans don’t appear to be easily removable like they are in the Theory palettes.

Honoree

Honoree is a soft, peachy beige with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had a velvety, smooth texture that wasn’t too soft or too firmly pressed in the pan, so it didn’t have excess product kicked up in the pan but was still very pigmented and adhered well to bare skin. This shade wore well for eight hours on me.

Formula Overview

-

The eyeshadow formula is supposed to be "pigment[ed]" with "smooth and even application" that is "long-lasting." The matte shades are typically semi-opaque to opaque but buildable with soft, velvety textures that can sometimes be a little powdery or slightly firm, depending on the shade. I find that the mattes are often best suited to someone who likes control over pigmentation and may prefer to build up color; they regularly perform better in practice than just swatched on the arm as well.

The shimmer shades range from satin to metallic, and the more metallic shades tend to feel creamier to the touch, while the satin ones have a fine pearl to them that looks almost melted on the lid once blended out. Both the mattes and shimmers are blendable and easy to work with. Most of Viseart's eyeshadows wear between seven and nine hours on me.

Rivoli

Rivoli is a soft, light-medium gold with warm undertones and a frosted sheen. It had semi-opaque pigmentation, which was buildable to opaque coverage with two to three layers. The consistency was slightly looser compared to the other shades, which made it more prone to sheering out and had a touch of fallout during application. The color started to fade on me after seven and a half hours of wear.

Seine

Seine is a bright, coppery brown with warm, red undertones and a metallic sheen. It had opaque color payoff in a single layer paired with a denser, almost cream-like texture that worked best with flat, synthetic brushes over fluffy, natural brushes. It could have been a bit easier to diffuse the edges. On me, it wore nicely for eight hours with a smidgen of fallout over time.

Palais

Palais is a bright, medium copper with strong, warm orange undertones and a sparkling, metallic sheen. The consistency was moderately dense and needed a slightly firmer, denser brush for opaque coverage on the lid, though it applied evenly and retained its intensity. It lasted for eight hours on me.

Louvre

Louvre is a deep red with neutral-to-warm undertones and a semi-matte finish. It had excellent pigmentation in a single layer with a soft, slightly drier texture that wasn’t powdery but did not feel as finely-milled as other shades in the palette (to the touch). The color applied well to the lid, though, and stayed on well for eight and a half hours.

Royal is a dark, grayish black with neutral-to-cool undertones and a frosted finish. It went on a lot darker than I anticipated given how it appeared in the pan. Viseart – always comin’ through with the quality! They’re so reliable. Sadly, they’re a little late in the game with the color scheme. While it’s super pretty, It’s just been done SO many times now. I’m ready for companies to move on to something new. For someone who doesn’t have lots of these colors though, I think this looks super nice.

thirteenthirteen Avatar

Lovely but too similar to stuff I already have. Would be a good gift, I guess. (I keep thinking that about a lot of newer releases. I find it hard to believe that most makeup enthusiasts who like warm tones don’t already have at least one palette with similar colors, but it’s easy to imagine a well-intentioned SO walking out of a Sephora with this.)

KK Avatar

That’s an interesting observation Christine! I never thought of it that way! I guess now it makes more sense to me why I feel conflicted when there is a set of say 5 minis n I already have 2 shades in full size! The set wasn’t designed for me (or the likes)…

Christina D. Avatar

I love Viseart and I have all of their eye shadow palettes. Sometimes I wonder why I even bother buying anything else — oh yeah, it’s because I’m OCD when it comes to eye shadow palettes!

kjh Avatar

Due to cost effectiveness, expected some cut corners on this one. Was pleasantly surprised. You might say it is budget Viseart. Not going to indulge, fairly duped. But as a gift for a m/u lover, in this range, this more than fits the bill. Covers the current shade ranges, neutrals, and can go warmer/cooler. Good job, V & S.

Katherine T. Avatar

I have enough dupes in my stash, but I’m so excited that Viseart is launching 9 pan palettes, can’t wait to see the future ones. It seems like Viseart is really listening to customers, and realizing not everyone is an MUA or can drop $ 80 all once, so they came out with different kits for different budgets, from $ 30 to $ 45 to $49 to $ 80. And the palettes are more cohesive, with a nice mix of mattes and shimmers, and are more portable than the originals. Way to go Viseart!

kjh Avatar

Remove them, hmmmm….idk, though. Have so many Zs, they could be less accessible. Maybe I’ll try it and save the regular cases. There ought to be some instantly recognizable Zs coming out soon, and iirc, Zs go on sale at Ulta in November.

Beth Avatar

It may be derivative of the MR and all of its offspring and because of that I’m not going to buy it, but it’s a darn pretty and well made derivative.

Maggie Avatar

I think 2 blacks are a bit redundant here. They could have done with a brighter gold, to play with the “golden hour” name. The packaging looks lovely. I hope viseart puts out more palettes out like these–palettes with smaller shadow pans aimed for normal consumers but either the same great quality

Mariam Avatar

As you mentioned I’m sure a lot of people would already own similar colors in their collection but this actually seems like a decent palette and I will consider purchasing it as a gift to family or friends who hoard less palettes than I do!

Thank you for the review.

Deborah S. Avatar

This is a really nice palette of better than just good quality shadows but having said that I am not getting this one. As you mentioned, it is pretty dupable and I have multiples of these shades. I do commend Viseart on their upgraded packaging and this would be a nice travel palette.

LindaP Avatar

I will tell you, that every time I use a Viseart palette (which is often), I have a moment of amazement of how good it is. It’s hard to describe the feeling. But it’s like once I start using it I relax. Don’t have to worry about application, or building, or pigment. They are very, very good and I appreciate the consistent quality over time.

This palette I don’t need — but I wish I did!

Irene Avatar

I’m not an eyeshadow person, but this palette has shades that would work well for me and be wearable on their own or in combinations of two. Most brands seem to include a lot of browns in their palettes in this kind of warm color scheme, and those colors always look muddy on me!

Gina Avatar

I bought as soon as it was available.
Yes, the colors are not ground breaking, but the depth and dimension of the colors is what sets his palette apart.
It’s stunning and I absolutely love it.

Genevieve Avatar

It’s wonderful to see a palette come together with fabulous ratings instead of disaster after disaster.
I really want to love this little gem, but for a 9 pan, a few shades are pretty similar to each other: as Christine mentioned Seine and Palais and also Royal and Tuileries. It would have been delightful if their had been a green shade or Royal had been more greyish.
Anyway, it is a beautiful, gorgeous palette at a very reasonable price.

Laura Avatar

Christine, Did you notice the huge change with this palette? My outer box says made in the US, and the Golden Hour formula is different than that in the Petit Pro, Theory, or the full-sized palettes. I was surprised the more in-depth research I started doing…

Christine Avatar

No, I didn’t notice any significant change in quality or overall texture/feel (nothing that suggests they went to an inferior formula, only the natural +/- between shades and finishes) – the mattes were generally comparable to other recent Viseart mattes, the shimmers less silicone-like compared to Petit Pro but similar to most other Viseart shimmers. The first few ingredients are similar across their formulas, though they have a slew of lists.

Viseart has continued to evolve their formula over the years – I know at least one of my original larger palettes has one formula but then subsequent ones had an updated formula.

Lulle Avatar

It looks like it could be a good opportunity to try the Viseart shadows. I avoid reds but Louvre looks like the only one I wouldn’t want to use. I wish Royal could be a purple or a true gray though, because there’s basically 2 blacks in this palette, one matte and one shimmery, and that’s a bit of a bummer for a 9-pan palette.

KK Avatar

A quick head’s up to the community here – This one is Sephora exclusive for 1 month and then will be available at other retailers. In case someone like me, wants to buy from Beautylish – since Sephora keeps cancelling my orders! I checked it with Viseart team thru Insta.

Alecto Avatar

Oh how I wish they had released this palette a year and a half ago! Too many dupes now to justify it.

I don’t have a problem with Seine and Palais in the same palette, but either Royal needed to be very different, or Tuileries needed to be a soft periwinkle blue, since the golden hour often comes with an amazing, muted, cool blue sky.

Tracey E. Avatar

Thanks for the swatches and thorough review, Christine. I don’t have many of these shades as I haven’t jumped wholeheartedly into some of the orange and rust shades though they would undoubtedly suit me. I have red shadows that I adore courtesy of Chanel. It’s good to see Viseart’s quality continuing through their newer releases.

Chelsea Avatar

Urrrrgh, I love Viseart but this offering is so boring!! I’m just being selfish because I want to buy this palette, but I know I’ll never use it! Glad it’s decent quality for everyone who will be picking it up

Agona Avatar

I’m not sure how to use Royal in this palette. The slightly cool undertones makes me not sure how to pair it with the other colors. Anyone have any suggestions?

OK, I’m making my introduction to Viseart with this palette. I feel like I’m jumping into a deep pool. I don’t know why, but I think after the Huda Desert Dusk experience, and even if I don’t spend a lot of money on a palette, I’m feeling shaky about paying even 20€ now on any palette. Has anyone else ever felt like that after a bad makeup purchase? (Hey that could be a question.)

Well, I have to work harder finding a look with the Desert Dusk. And it may just be me, lacking inspiration or technique. I remember feeling that way about the ND’s Star palette when I first used it, so maybe that’ll happen with Desert Dusk. That said, I also think that it may be harder to work with because it’s not as good a palette pigment wise (in my opinion) and I think that I’m just not a pink, rosy, peachy, red palette person, so find it easy to create looks that I like with a palette like the Star palette.
