Urban Decay x Kristen Leanne Kaleidoscope Dream Eyeshadow Palette Review, Photos, Swatches
Kaleidoscope Dream
Urban Decay Kaleidoscope Dream Kristen Leanne Eyeshadow Palette ($39.00 for 0.34 oz.) includes 11 shades of eyeshadow and a dual-ended blush housed in a cardboard palette with interior mirror. The layout of the palette seems to be a love/hate aspect of the palette, and whether or not the arrangement makes sense to your eyes, there is a lot of wasted space so the palette has that bulky feel that far too many Urban Decay palettes have had in the past. The formula used in this felt different to me than the brand’s typical formula (found in their singles)–the shimmers were much, much denser and creamier to the point where some (like Dye) were a little too thick and were harder to blend seamlessly into the thinner matte textures. The majority of the shades were quite pigmented, and they adhered well to bare skin and lasted around eight hours. Some readers commented that the palette has a general feel of rehashing by the brand, and I’d agree that if you have a half dozen of Urban Decay’s palettes, you’ll find quite a bit of overlap.
Through using the palette, I gravitated toward the shades Leo and Brixton quite a bit and actually felt like they were far better transformative shades than the ones the brand included in their Distortion palette. I actually wish they had included larger pans of them instead of splitting a pan. Corona was also a lot more nuanced than anticipated–a lot more than just another neutral.

Spitfire
Spitfire is a bright, medium-dark fuchsia with cool undertones and a blue-to-pink pearl. It had opaque pigmentation that applied evenly to bare skin with a soft, slightly crumbly texture. I felt like it applied better with a firm, flat synthetic brush as opposed to something fluffier as a result. The eyeshadow lasted well for eight and a half hours on me.

Formula Overview

The formula is typically described as "high-pigment" that "stays on your lids" and goes on "seamlessly." Their permanent range has a lot of fantastic shades in it, and many of them are pigmented, blendable, and long-wearing. Some of their matte are real workhorse kind of shades with soft, smooth, silky, and blendable textures, while their shimmers and pearly shades are very rich in payoff and apply beautifully to the lid. They wear between seven and nine hours on me, depending on the shade and finish.

Stay Gold
Stay Gold is a medium-dark gold with warm undertones and a metallic finish. The eyeshadow had fantastic color payoff that covered the lid evenly and smoothy in a single pass. The texture was smooth, cream-like, and dense without being stiff or too thick. It wore well for almost nine hours before fading slightly.

Tajin
Tajin is a medium-dark copper with warm, orange undertones and a matte finish. The pigmentation was opaque, while the eyeshadow had a soft, velvety consistency that was just a smidgen dusty in the pan but applied with minimal fallout, even when used with a fluffy crease brush. It lasted for eight and a half hours before fading noticeably on my lid.

TRM
TRM is a deep navy blue with cool undertones and a frosted sheen. It was richly pigmented with true-to-pan color. The eyesahdow was quite dense, though, and worked best with firm, flat brushes and a heavier hand. I used patting and pressing motions to get the product to adhere evenly and smoothly to the lid. I didn’t have any issues diffusing the edges with this shade as it wasn’t too thick on the lid. The color started to fade on me after eight and a half hours of wear.

13th Floor
13th Floor is a deep black with neutral undertones and a matte finish. It had nearly opaque pigmentation that applied evenly to bare skin and blended out fairly well. The consistency was soft, velvety, and not too thin or too dense, so it had better adhesion on bare skin and did not look patchy as it blended out. It was quite pigmented, though, and I felt like a little went a long way. The eyeshadow wore well for eight hours on me.

Dye
Dye is a deep purple with subtle, cool undertones and a pearly sheen. It was richly pigmented with a very dense, almost cream-like consistency that was thicker on the skin. As I blended it out, the texture was more like a mostly-dried cream eyeshadow than powder eyeshadow, so it took a bit more effort to diffuse the edges evenly, and it did not seem to diffuse as well over thinner matte eyeshadows (like Tajin). It started to create on me after eight and a half hours of wear.

Formula Overview
$19.00/0.05 oz. - $380.00 Per Ounce

Dye
LELimited Edition. $19.00.
Corona
Corona is a plummy bronze with cooler, rosy undertones and warmer golden shimmer. It had a denser, creamier consistency with alrger flecks of sparkle that applied best by patting and pressing onto the skin for even, opaque coverage. There was a touch of fallout during application if I swept it on. This shade lasted well for eight hours before creasing faintly.

I’ve always loved Urban Decay shadows and these look fantastic, but the colors are just a little too ‘out there’ for me! But, it still looks great for those who may use these colors!
They are bright ones!
My feelings exactly.
The layout is a no for me.
I totally get that!
Some lovely shades in here. I’d love a single of Corona!
Corona is gorg!
That’s exactly my thought too. Corona is so pretty.
I would also like a Corona single
Ardency Inn Rose Gold is identical, I’m surprised it wasn’t listed as a dupe especially as Royal was for Dye
Intially, I wasn’t impressed with this palette, probably bc of the layout. Having seen the swatches and your two eye looks, I now love it.
The quality was quite good!
This palette is pretty good with lots of bright, stunning shades. Corona is a beautiful colour.
But if you had the Foil Eyes and the UD Spectrum, I think you would be covered.
Gorgeous eye look Christine.
Thank you, Genevieve!
I really loved this palette too. I was less annoyed by the layout of the shades IRL vs in photos. IDK why that is, but it didn’t bother me as much in person. BUT I do agree that there should’ve been less space in between the shadows… it would’ve made the kaleidoscope formation more apparent. The performance, though, was top-notch.
That is interesting that in person it bothered you less!
The quality is there. And every time I look at the layout, it bothers me. Why?
You’re not alone!
Lord help me, because I am feeling a very strong pull towards the super rich jewel tones, complex neutrals and the feel of it. The layout is pretty ridiculous, if you ask me. But not *horrible*, though. Dye is the royal purple of my dreams, Spitfire is what I wish MAC S&R’s had for pigment, oh my!
Well, maybe it’ll go on sale in a month or two… 😉
Really was OL about that. Prob will gat marked down, that’s the trend. Great offering of brights with some offsets, and a couple of toppers. The layout per se does not annoy me as much as the bulk and wasted space. Reminds me of BOS 4, was it? Two levels, pull out drawer, plug in electronic attachment, pop up plastic decoration? Oy, overkill. Had to pull that one apart instantly. I’d depot this sucker, too. Makes for heavy appreciation of Viseart packaging…all about the shadows, not the tangential frippery. About LCW…I thought Long Cool Woman (in a black dress), but the other UD (urban dictionary) said lying, cheating W. If the latter, it’s pretty misogynistic. Even for some of the lower lying UD names…
It’s the song, not what the urban dictionary says 🙂
Leo and Brixton interest me but that’s not enough to want to purchase the palette . Plus, I’m supposed to be on “NO BUY”
This one may need to go home with me.
I’m already a big fan of Urban Decay, so it’s good to hear this palette has such a positive review. I’m inexplicably turned off by the palette layout(WHY??) but these swatches are making me rethink the decision to pass on this one. The colours are bright and bold but I think could be a nice addition to my collection. I am in love with corona!
How I wish Corona was a single. It’s really the only standout here 🙁
Despite the quality and pigmentation of this, is it just, ugly, to me. The colours are amazing (not what I’d wear, but that’s not the point), it’s the balance and the layout of the palette that is disturbing, completely off-putting. I get trying to be unique and really stand out, but….
Well, as my design instructor used to say, “you’re not so special, that someone else won’t like what you do.”
You are reviewing the product, Christine, as is your job.
However, sales, and therefore consumers, will tell the tale.
I had a feeling from the preview that this palette would rate well, but I just have to reiterate that I really want to hear from the design team a justification behind their thought process. Like, just: why? What were they actually thinking? I really want to know the creative idea behind this layout, because…huh? HATE!!! The colors look beautiful, though, lol!
Sorry, but I just have to add, thematically it is totally not in keeping with a kaleidoscope. A kaleidoscope is sym-met-ri-cal, Urban Decay. I mean, come on!
I love the bright pretty colors and the price is reasonable too! I just brought UD Heavy Metals palette but I may get this one too. I really like the looks you did with this palette, beautiful!
Great eye looks! This is a beautiful palette. Mine is out for delivery. I’m glad to see the good reviews. I wish the transforming shades had their own pans, too. I’m not a fan of split pans. I think there was room in this layout for one more pan.
I really would just be happy with a single of Corona. I think the kaleidoscope theme would have been neat if the packaging matched, with abstract colors and shapes somehow. This feels contrived.
Yeah, this is another palette I will depot if it goes on sale. I had to laugh at the fact that UD through EVERY single pan size they make into this palette.
Falls into the Want but don’t Need category for me. 😉
A well done brights palette like this makes me really happy.
Just wondering if I own the Kat von d saint and sinner palette and the Urban decay basquiat colorful palette do you think this palette is different enough to buy as well? Corona and Trm are calling my name.
You can compare any two palettes here: https://www.temptalia.com/makeup-dupe-list/#pvp
Oh great! Thank you.
Some great colours here, but will only grab if it goes on sale. Not a must have for me but would be nice to add my collection.
In regards to the layout- I am so surprised that people are bothered so much by it. I think UD is just trying to be different OR maybe Kristen designed it? If it does it’s job well that’s all I care about
I literally don’t have a single dupe for any of the shades in this palette, but what I was hoping for were good dupes for Leo and Brixton. I don’t know if I’ll buy any of the dupes from SugarPill and OCC, though.. so this palette wouldn’t be worth it just for those 2 small shades. The other shades seem nice, but I wouldn’t wear them very often as I’m a health care professional and they’d be too “out there” for every day wear. Thanks for the review. Maybe if it goes on sale one day…
I didn’t want to want this palette, but you review is changing my mind. I honestly don’t think I have many dupes of these colors and they’re so incredibly pretty. I think the Dye and Corona are calling to me! <3
Beautiful!!!!! I missed the Jean-Michel Basquiat “Tenant” palette by UD and this one reminds me a lot of it in a metallic, shimmer way. Ah, I could have sooo much fun with the two of them!!!! Hmmmmm….
Wow, so happy! I had to get rid of all of my eyeshadows because they were 2+ years old and expired. I was so bummed because most of them weren’t even halfway done and I promised myself I would only buy 2 small palettes, one of neutrals and one of happy colors. This SO fits the bill and has all the bright, gorgeous colors I love… blue, purple, green oh my! AND a basic black! I actually don’t mind the layout at all. 😀 Best of all, I got it on sale!!! <3 So happy.
Bought this due to your review and goddamn it’s gorgeous. So grateful for the work you put in, makes choosing makeup considerable easier.
So happy to hear it! xo
