Urban Decay Detour On the Run Mini Eyeshadow Palette Review & Swatches
Detour
Urban Decay Detour On the Run Mini Eyeshadow Palette ($25.00 for 0.16 oz.) is a new, limited edition eight-pan palette that featured only two repromotes (the other six are new) with six neutrals and two pops of color. I was surprised that Detour didn’t blend out more readily as it wasn’t the type of color that would seem prone to problems, and there was nothing about the texture that gave me reason to anticipate blending issues, but alas, it took a bit more effort to diffuse. Plunge in this palette is a far cry from the glorious beauty of Plunge in the Beached palette.

Off the Grid
Off the Grid is a pale beige with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had opaque color payoff in a single layer, which adhered evenly to my brow bone but had some fallout when I worked with it, so I had to be quite careful or else this turned other shades gray. The consistency was lightly powdery so be sure to tap off excess prior to using it. It wore well for seven and a half hours on me before it showed signs of fading.

Formula Overview

The formula is typically described as "high-pigment" that "stays on your lids" and goes on "seamlessly." Their permanent range has a lot of fantastic shades in it, and many of them are pigmented, blendable, and long-wearing. Some of their matte are real workhorse kind of shades with soft, smooth, silky, and blendable textures, while their shimmers and pearly shades are very rich in payoff and apply beautifully to the lid. They wear between seven and nine hours on me, depending on the shade and finish.

Detour
Detour is a muted, medium yellow-brown with strong, warm undertones and a matte finish. The eyeshadow was richly pigmented and had a smooth, velvety texture, which felt lovely in the pan, but it did not blend out as readily as I anticipated as it had a tendency to go on unevenly and adhere very strongly to those areas. I experienced that even over primer, which usually cures that type of issue, so it took more effort to get a softer edge. It wore well for eight hours on me before I noticed slight fading.

16th St
16th St is a rich, deep copper with warm, red undertones and a chunkier, golden shimmer. It had opaque pigmentation with a slightly drier consistency that allowed some of the sparkles to dislodge and fallout during application; it did not feel as cream-like or as smooth as the last iteration of this shade. The eyeshadow applied fairly well and stayed on for eight hours on me with slight fallout over time.

Switchback is a pale, green-tinted white base with a gold-to-green shifting sheen. It had good pigmentation with a soft, more loosely-pressed texture that was a little powdery in the pan but adhered well to bare skin. It blended out easily along the edges, and while it didn’t have much shift, it was brightening and almost glowed on my lid. It lasted nicely for seven and a half hours on me before it started to look like it was fading.

Plunge
Plunge is a faded, dark blue-teal with cool undertones and a frosted sheen. It had semi-opaque pigmentation with a firmer, thin consistency that was significantly different than last version of this shade I had tried (which received an A+; it was that good). It was harder to apply evenly to my lid with a brush, and I had to use a fingertip to get enough coverage and intensity out of it. The color stayed on well for seven hours before fading noticeably.

I’m telling you, if I weren’t so painfully tired from all the testing at my cardiologist’s office this morning, and fasting no less, I would go in my room and pull out Beached, Leo from that strange looking palette that UD put out last winter, plus MAC Uninterrupted and ABH Red Ochre (or something) and go to town on those!
Obviously, I don’t need Detour now, do I! ?
Fingers crossed for you!! xoxo
Thanks Christine. Today was seriously something else. Had to get up 3 hours earlier than normal, had to stop all caffeine by 9 pm last night (including chocolate ?), was only permitted water to drink from bedtime until they were all done with the nuclear stress test and echocardiogram. Fasting like this and no coffee either, really threw my entire day off! Tomorrow, I will play with those shades, though ?
I like this little set, probably best of all of them. Problem is, I already have the Beached palette, so I have Plunge and 16th Street. Still, these neutrals with a punch of colour – just right up my street!
OMG – what has the brand done to its best blue shade? A very average palette now.
Oh gosh – I didn’t even register the poor rating for Plunge! It’s not even a year since Beached came out. Why could they not recreate the same quality? Christine, you’ve been part of the formulating/manufacturing process with Jealousy Wakes- can you understand why this happens? Is there a way to explain it?
I don’t have any insight from that, but it’s possible it was made by a different manufacturer or that when assembled in this type of packaging / this pan shape they made in adjustments to the press or they just changed the formula or ratios within the formula (for whatever reasons).
I know it happens a lot but it seemed that with a company as large as UD and with their long history of being in this business, that there would be some sort of “quality control/consistency” and that one version of Plunge (or any other product) would be the same as any previous ones. I mean, I can understand big differences like this if a certain ingredient becomes banned or if a company is changing to this new “clean” concept or even if they’re bought out by another company. But it just seems so counter-productive for UD basically to shoot itself in the foot this way! Maybe they’re hoping that people who missed out on Beached will be so eager to have 2 of the shades that they won’t bother checking Temptalia for an accurate review!
I spent well over an hour deciding which one of these 3 I would pick up in Sephora’s app one day early promo. This one won out due to me not having any Urban Decay dupes and probably less dupes in general. It looks like it got the best review of the three although Plunge wasn’t exactly stellar.I was also very curious with Swithchback as a shifter shade. I skipped the Beach palette so that’s probably why I don’t have any UD dupes! I did end up buying Born To Run and was very pleased that I did after it arrived at my door. This mini palette fits in with the theme and is giving me ideas for looks combining the two palettes although I was able to create a nice lunch date look with just Detour On the Run.
Hope you enjoy the palette, Anne!
I hadn’t planned on getting the Born to Run palette (because of those red shadows) but I am SO glad I did. At first sight, it looks a bit extreme but it is actually such a usable and wearable assortment of shades.
What do you mean when you compare shades in this palette to the “last iteration” of them? Are these repeat shades or something like that?
Yes – the palette contains two repromotes.
This is the mini palette I purchased. I haven’t swatched or played with it yet, but I’m sad to see Plunge is not as glorious as the original. Hopefully it’s better over primer.
Switchback makes my heart flutter… I just want that shade! I’ll have to see if there are any inexpensive dupes in a single shade format.
