Natasha Denona Sunrise Eyeshadow Palette Review & Swatches
Sunrise
Natasha Denona Sunrise 15-Pan Small Eyeshadow Palette ($65.00 for 0.67 oz.) is a new, permanent palette designed to complement the original Sunset palette. It is a smaller format palette–mini by the brand’s standards but more average-sized with respect to most eyeshadow palettes these days. I really hope the brand continues to release palettes in this format (I’d be happy with these over the larger 15-pans, as they retail for $129, and it is hard to finish up a single eyeshadow… period).
Most of the eyeshadows were semi-opaque to opaque in coverage, blendable, and easy to work with on my skin with eight to nine-hour wear. Aster was the most “difficult” shade in the palette, as I found it had a tendency to sheer out and had some fallout, so that’s one that I felt needed to be used with fingertips or a wet brush. The mattes were definitely the highlight in the palette–substantial without being too dense and blendable without being too powdery.
The palette launches today at Sephora, Beautylish, Selfridges, Cult Beauty, and FeelUnique.

Poppy
Poppy is a light-mediumr ed with warm undertones and a subtle, pink sheen. It had nearly opaque color coverage that applied well to my skin, though it was a smidgen thin and less cream-like compared to most of the brand’s shimmer shades. It wore well for eight hours on me before it started to fade.

Formula Overview
$29.00/0.08 oz. - $362.50 Per Ounce
The majority of the brand's eyeshadows are quite pigmented, blendable, and long-wearing. The eyeshadows have improved over time, particularly with respect to longevity (without a primer). The original formula often creased on me within seven to eight hours, whereas the more current formula wears eight to nine hours with fading (instead of full-on creasing). The more matte finishes tend to be a bit more velvety, substantial, and less dry/powdery compared to prior iterations.
The metallic finish is often the creamiest, slightly denser in feel, but has excellent pigmentation, adhesion, and blendability. The sparkling shades can have some fallout, depending on how they're applied and how sparkly they are, so they sometimes work better with fingertips or a dampened brush; they can also run sheerer compared to other finishes.
Cream-Powders are the more unique formulation and tend to have firmer, almost stiff, consistencies and more semi-opaque, watercolor-esque coverage. They are longer-wearing, but they can take a few uses to learn how to use. This formula has also improved compared to when it first debuted--it is a bit more yielding now.

Citrine
Citrine is a rich, medium-dark yellow with strong, warm undertones and a matte finish. The eyeshadow had opaque color coverage that applied evenly to bare skin and blended out nicely, though I felt like it had a tendency to sheer out a bit over bare skin (I’d recommend a primer underneath). The consistency was smooth, soft, and lightly powdery but not messy to work with. It stayed on well for just over eight hours on me before it started to show signs of wearing away.

Aster
Aster is a rosy plum with subtle, warm undertones and cooler, blue-to-violet sparkle. It had a drier, more loosely-pressed consistency, which resulted in slight fallout and a tendency for the product to sheer out when applied to my skin. If I wanted more opacity and true-to-pan depth, I needed to apply it with fingertips or a wet brush. It lasted well for eight hours on me before fading visibly.

Glory
Glory is a deep pink with subtle, cool undertones and a matte finish. It had rich color payoff with a soft, lightly dusty consistency that felt a bit dry to the touch but wasn’t grainy (some red/berry shades can be). It blended out fairly well, but I noticed that it seemed to darken slightly on one eye (but not the other… it did this on two separate occasions) so it may be particularly sensitive to any oiliness/tackiness of either bare skin or a primer. It wore well for eight and a half hours on me before there were signs of fading.

Agate
Agate is a bright, peachy gold with strong, warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It had a smooth, lightly creamy texture that was a bit thicker and denser in the pan so I’d recommend using a synthetic brush and/or moderate hand to pick up product evenly. It had opaque pigmentation that adhered well to bare skin and blended out easily. It wore well for eight and a half hours on me before fading noticeably.

Day Spring is a medium bronze with warm undertones and a sparkling, metallic sheen. Those mattes are gorgeous and TDF. If ND offered a fiver with Morgan and the four mattes in the last row, I would SO be on it. Really beautiful palette. Thanks for presenting it so well and so quickly. ND has been smart to make smaller, less costly offerings. We all remember the 28 pans that seemed so inaccessible to the average m/u consumer. She’s savvy.
Oh my goodness, this palette is making my heart go pitter-pat! I love these shades so much. And I’m so happy that this palette got a great rating. Definitely picking this one up.
Very pretty palette, but not something I would get much use out of. But I love how you made a sunrise on your eyelid!
this palette is beautiful, and i definitely want to pick it up eventually! it does bother me how similar poppy and phlox are though…like why?!
I thought the same thing; they could have put another true purple in to replace one of them.
I ordered this palette first thing after I woke up today. So excited to receive this. I love these types of colors!
I hope ND continues to stick to these kinds of pan sizes. Lord knows I will never finish up one of her gargantum eyeshadow pans in her standard size and the lowered price is great! This is such a gorgeous palette and I’m so glad to see it is up to par! Thank you again for being such a reliable, go-to for reviews <3
This looks beautiful. How similar or not is it overall to like Violet Voss’ Holy Grail or Anastasia Renaissance, if you have those? Looks great on you.
Oh, and I meant to say, although I understand wanting to market yourself in luxury brands, but seems like she will reach many more buyers with smaller shadows, smaller palette and therefore, less spendy. I personally would not, even with sales, ever spend $125 or more for shadows with the amount of makeup I have (and similar colors). I can see if you don’t have a huge collection, and you want to treat yourself, but the smaller size, lower price point seems to be a better marketing strategy. Her shadows are high quality and not made in China, so I do think they’re worth it.
It’s a beautiful color story. I have to tell myself I just have too many palettes though haha!
Lol I am having this convo with myself every day lmao
Thanks so much for the quick review! I’ve been bingeing on ND products recently, including this one (ordered it yesterday), so I’m glad to know it scored so well. Like many others, I’m hopeful that this is the beginning of a trend towards more typical pan weights at a reduced overall price point from ND, which seems like a win for everyone involved.
She’s done it AGAIN! Another stunning, well coordinated, and lust-worthy palette of goodness! Great, except for my wallet….
I’m going to have to be very picky when it comes to what palette (it two?) gets bought first. Sunrise vs. Tan & Glow with Mini Nude. Hmmm. I’ve been on a beachy, bronzey kick lately, however, this one is KAPOW!
Great review, Christine, thank you! I am so ashamed, I own *every single one* of the close dupes to each color, I can’t believe I broke down and bought it before your review came out. But somehow, secretly glad I did.
Dana, I did wait and can dupe 9 of 15, with 6 being really close. So, since I’ve not had even one of ND’s latest palettes Safari, Tropical, etc., I thought perhaps I’d purchase this one, but since you mentioned you did (and it has such a good review from Christine), I’d like to know how you feel about your purchase? Did you compare any of your dupes to see if they REALLY are good ones? Thanks in advance!
Do you think ND will release safari, sunset etc in this mini size? I sure hope so!! ?
Man, I really wanted this but after looking at the dupes list, I pretty much have a dupe for all. Bummer. Thanks for the review. 🙂
Not a color scheme that works well for my complexion (or my color preferences in makeup) buy holy crap this is beautiful to look at and the eye looks you created are fabulous. I really wish these colors worked for me because I’m impressed – and that price is totally doable.
Ditto on the colors, but Christine makes them look soooo good! I’m thinking I may change up on my usual color scheme and go more “pretty woman” look with this.
I really wish this had come out a few years ago (before I spent so much time painstakingly collecting these types of colors in various singles and palettes). There is a tiny argument about having them all in one place, but it’s a Colourpop price range argument, not a $65 argument. Lovely palette, just years too late.
I’m with you — this is breaking my heart a little bit. This is the palette I could only dream of 10 years ago, and now my stash is full of colors like these in every format, from loose powder singles to pressed multi-pan palettes. I already have it all, but it’s not like having them all together in this one palette. Still … I’m not getting it. [le sigh]
This is so pretty and excellent formula too. I could wear the reds but a lot of the other colors not. So I am holding off for now, though I will definitely swatch it at Sephora and see if my resolve holds.
I loved it when I first saw it, then figured “heck, it’s dupable in my collection” and it is! I have most of the dupes and probably others that aren’t listed. I do love ND and hardly ever use the ones I have ?
Wow, this is utterly gorgeous! Those mattes are killin’ it. However, I think I’m covered with these types of shades.
I also think this pan size is a much better deal for consumers and is in line with most sizes these days. I think that brands are heading towards smaller palettes and the very large palette size tends to be unpopular now.
As to the palette, there does seem to be a bit of overlap in shades, but otherwise it’s an excellent palette and the mattes, which are often troublesome to other brands, are stellar.
As soon as I saw this on Trendmood I knew I had to have it. Ordered it yesterday and I cannot wait for it to arrive. Kinkysweat put out her review with 3 looks tutorial on it too yesterday. Stunning!
Great looking palette — I really wish I needed it. I’ve been collecting these colors as indie offerings (and in other palettes) for years, so don’t need any of them, but wow would it be great to have them all together in one palette like this. Can’t justify it, won’t get it, but … I’m really happy just to look at this for a while.
Dodging a lot of offerings.. this one included. Dupes galore.
I got mine last week. I had to buy it from beautylish because it wasn’t yet available in Europe on cultbeauty or Feelunique, that’s how much I fell in love with the colour story of sunrise! When I saw it a few months back, I was blown away. So so pretty. I am happy that the quality is great and the pallet smaller, good move by ND. I am obsessed with her packaging!! Have you seen just how pretty the packaging of the bloom pallet and tan pallet are?! I buy very much with my eyes and a beautiful case is going to sway me anytime ( no matter how silly that sounds, and is, lol). Thank you for the thorough review Christina!
So glad I could help, Kat, and thrilled to hear you’re loving your palette!
