Melt Cosmetics Rust Eyeshadow Palette (2020) Review & Swatches
Rust
Melt Cosmetics Rust 10-Pan Eyeshadow Palette ($58.00 for 0.66 oz.) is a new–probably permanent–palette that extends the original Rust Eyeshadow Stack with five additional shades. The brand indicated that Rott was changed slightly, but in terms of being better in quality but also a bit in color.

Classic
Classic is a light, buttery yellow with moderate, warm undertones and a matte finish. The texture was smooth, velvety, and more substantial–a huge step-up from the original shade–and held together better on bare skin.
It had opaque pigmentation that applied similarly as it didn’t sheer out as readily but was blendable along the edges. There was still light powderiness in the pan and a touch of fallout during application. It lasted well for eight hours before fading visibly.

Antique (2020)
Antique (2020) is a light orange with moderate, warm undertones and a matte finish. I found the color to be a bit darker and richer compared to the original in the Rust stack, but I think that could have had a lot to do with improvements in texture and general pigmentation.
The consistency was soft, lightly powdery but not prone to sheering out, so while it was blendable, I was still able to get nearly opaque coverage in a single layer. It wore well for eight hours before fading noticeably.

Erode
Erode is a rich, tangerine orange with strong, warm yellow undertones and a matte finish. It had opaque pigmentation in a single layer, which applied evenly to bare skin and blended out without difficulty. The texture was smooth, velvety, and substantial without being too powdery. It stayed on nicely for eight and a half hours and left a faint stain behind after removal.

Rubbish
Rubbish is a rich, yellowed, light brown with strong, warm undertones and a matte finish. The eyeshadow had rich color coverage that applied evenly to my lid and diffused well along the edges but wasn’t prone to fallout or sheering out too readily. The consistency was soft, smooth, and not too firmly nor too softly pressed into the pan. The color showed signs of fading after eight hours of wear.

Tarnish
Tarnish is a medium-dark gold with strong,w arm undertones and a lightly sparkled, metallic finish. It had nearly opaque color coverage in a single layer, while the texture felt a bit drier and more loosely-pressed so there was light fallout during application. I’d recommend using a dampened brush or fingertip for application if fallout is a deal-breaker. It was still better than some of Melt’s recent shimmer shades, though. On me, I noticed faint fading after eight hours of wear and a smidgen of fallout over time.

Rust
Rust is a richer, medium-dark brown with moderate, warm undertones and a matte finish. The pigmentation was opaque in a single layer, which applied evenly to bare skin and blended out easily along the edges without sheering out too readily.
The texture wasn’t too firmly nor too softly pressed in the pan, so it picked up well with a brush but didn’t kick up tons of product in the pan either. It stayed on well for eight and a half hours before fading visibly.

Redox
Redox is a medium-dark brown with moderate, warm undertones and a sparkling, metallic finish. The texture felt more firmly-pressed into the pan, so it needed to be used a few times, which helped it yield more coverage with less effort.
It had opaque pigmentation once I got through that first layer or two, but there was some fallout during application. It lasted well for eight hours with faint fallout over time.

Ravage
Ravage is a deep brown with muted, more olive undertones and a pearly sheen. The texture was soft, smooth, and blendable without being too firmly pressed into the pan, which made it one of the brand’s better shimmers in the slim palette format. It had opaque pigmentation that adhered well to bare skin and didn’t show signs of fading until after eight hours of wear.

Rott #2
Rott #2 is a blackened brown with neutral-to-cool undertones and a mostly matte finish. There were very faint micro-shimmers visible in the close-up photo but not so much in practice. It was a much deeper take on the original Rott with better performance with respect to pigmentation and texture.
It had nearly opaque color coverage that was buildable to full coverage with a second layer. The texture felt more velvety, less powdery than the original, but it worked best applied in sheerer layers or else blending the edge wasn’t as foolproof. This shade lasted well for eight hours before fading noticeably.

Deliciously tempting like rich chocolate cake! This seems to be the best palette that Melt has put out thus far. It has beauty and a touch of decadence to it.
A beautifully rust toned palette, but I wish there were more shimmer shades rather than a lot of mattes (personally). The shades I loved were Tarnish, Redox and Ravage. Quite distinct neutral/rust shades.
I love your eye look too Christine. This seems to be a better quality palette from Melt than we have seen for awhile.
Thank you, Genevieve! 🙂
This is such a beautiful palette and if the economy hadn’t just crashed I would’ve picked it up by now.
Melt’s shimmers, more or less, are one of my favorites (Shapeshift stack aside). But I’m also a “apply the center lid color with a finger (yep, even mattes)” kind of person and always have been.
Christine, how do you think this compares to the stack? I have the stack (and LOVE IT) but not sure that I need to spend the money for a couple extra shades.
Hi Kristen!
In the review, I mentioned how each shade compared to the version in the stack!
