Melt Cosmetics Mary Jane Eyeshadow Palette Review & Swatches
Mary Jane
Melt Cosmetics Mary Jane 10-Pan Eyeshadow Palette ($58.00 for 0.68 oz.) is consistent with a lot of Melt’s eyeshadow releases–highs and lows, rarely consistent, and cool story, bro, but the execution rarely reaches the high level one would expect at this price point. I’d consider this a mix of cooler taupe and grungy olive tones overall, though it was still warmer than anticipated. The shimmers ranged from drier and more prone to fallout to soft and blendable. The mattes were more consistent, but some were more powdery or thinner, which made them less easy to use.

Mary Jane
Mary Jane is a light-medium gold with moderate, warm undertones and a sparkling, metallic sheen. It had medium pigmentation that had to be applied with a fingertip or a dampened brush to get smooth, even coverage that was higher than that. The texture was drier, firmer, and a little stiff to work with. It stayed on decently for seven and a half hours before having visible fallout.

Sweet Lucy
Sweet Lucy is a deep, olive-toned gold with subtle, warm undertones and a metallic finish. It was a very dense, thick formula that was difficult to pick up with a brush without really jabbing and pushing at the surface to release product. It worked better with a fingertip, as it helped to push and move the surface to yield powder to pick up. Once I worked through the first few layers, it seemed to soften slightly (though not to top-tier performance). It had opaque coverage–ignoring the issue of texture–that lasted for seven and a half hours on me before creasing slightly.

Great review which I was hoping for. Love taupe colors but melts quality is hit and miss sometimes.
It’s very pretty, but then again all of Melt’s palettes are. I really wish I liked their formulas more because their color stories speak to me.
Beautiful palette but such underwhelming performance! I would only consider getting this one under a deep discount of at least 50%, because seems like half of the palette will be a pain to use. Might as well dig out my Urban decay naked 1 original and use her instead.
I very briefly considered adding this to my Sephora Spring Sale order and I’m glad I didn’t… nothing in here really WOWs me enough to justify buying an entire palette. Bamba and Santa Maria are pretty, so I may pick up the SG dupe for the latter.
Right? I was this close.. had it in my basket for the S sale and thankfully balked.
Where to start with this one?! Besides the quality being all over the place and it running so deep and grungy that I swear I smell a blunt being smoked nextdoor, and *again* with the pot theme, I’m half lol’ing and also rolling my eyeballs up hard! Hey, I personally have nothing against medicinal usage of cannabis, but this is an ultra redundant theme with Melt. It’s grown weary.
Agreed! I’m glad I own Gun Metal stack and Glam so the urge is less lol. I love the packaging though but really really tired of the weed theme. Ok, we get it, you love marijuana.
Eh, the theme doesn’t bother me. Every large brand has a theme they’ve done to death (Nars – Orgasm anyone? Toofaced “anything raunchy sex, but also childlike and cute teddy bears”) and even though I don’t consume weed I still kind of enjoy their theme and the designs pressed in to the pans.
That aside, I was really struck by the similarity to the Gun Metal stack. It’s really a fleshed out similar color story and unless you wear a lot of grungey grays you can probably skip it. Though Gaspar is a gorgeous military olive gray brown and I love it.
Wow this was a easy pass for me already but dang Melt come on eith quality!!!!
Disappointing – it could have been a beautiful, more cool toned palette, but the formula is so very miss more than hit. I love the colour story generally, although it is probably a bit too dark for me, and it had some truly lovely shades if only the formula was right.
At first glance I thought the main picture for this thread was actually marijuana. Long day, sorry.
I hope their palettes of this theme don’t smell like marijuana! The scented makeup trend would not benefit from that existing anywhere, ever. Did you all see the Hipdot x Reese’s palettes and lipsticks that smell like peanuts? Seeing it made me think of this review, like maybe there is coordinating plan to release munchies themed palettes. I heard Too Faced has a Cheetos one coming out soon… just kidding.
Oh man, that would be awful lol
Oops…That B there really hurts my feelings. I was too impatient and already ordered the palette before your reviews (which are highly valuable and thank you so much!).
Well…I have come to the conclusion that Melt doesn’t want to improve the quality of their shimmers/metallics on purpose because I cannot find any other reason as to why they would repeatedly release such poorly performing shadows. I love the colour story of this palette, but I also hoped that it would be cooler-toned. I have a feeling that most brands don’t really know what is “cool-toned”. Most of those campaign photos and descriptions turn out to be very misleading.
I was thinking about ND’s Glam palette over this as a cooler option, but I feel the same towards that palette. It is not really cool-toned, rather neutral leaning towards cool, but not COOL. Overwhelmed with shimmers rather than cooler mattes and grey tones that I would much prefer. The most beautiful cool-toned shadows I have seen so far are from KvD’s Shade and Light palette (which I own and adore) and Lime Crime’s Venus Immortalis, which I’ll probably add to my collection.
Meanwhile, I will find a way to talk myself out of this palette although I know it might be impossible. Let’s see!
I would expect the price point of this palette to be closer to $40, maybe with two fewer shades. As it is, at $58, it will draw a lot of negative comparisons to Natasha Denona’s Glam Palette for $65, which has five more shades and more consistent quality.
Nailed it.
I was really drawn in by this interesting color story but held off for your review before even considering to purchase it! I have heard other people mention some of the mattes have gotten hard pan just from swatching and light usage. I really wish they would make their formulas more consistent.
Smoke Sessions has been the most enjoyable palette for me from Melt. I think it has the most consistent shimmer formula and the two mattes are fantastic.
Granted I’ve only had it for four days, but I’ve used all of my mattes and there’s not a hard pan in sight. Well, the chunky toppers at either end have that weird texture that performs better with a finger, but I think we all know Melt’s shimmers/metallics in palette form are iffy.
Oh dear, I was hoping for a home run! I just ordered this because it looked like a cooler taupe-y palette, but it might be an automatic exchange for ND Glam!
I bought this and absolutely love it. While I agree it’s warmer than the initial promo photos would have led us to believe, I find that in person my swatches don’t look as reddish as yours do on my monitor. I’ve used the palette every day since getting it and have now used all the shades. I could take or leave the “toppers” at either end. They’re the sort of sparse sparkles that I’m not in to (anyone who has the Bronze Seduction PMG palette knows that white/translucent one with the gold sparkle? same concept), but the rest is lovely. All of my mattes work well (and sinsemillia is a perfect cold burnt chocolate ash). The three shimmers work well, though the two grays are similar (I’ve been enjoying buffing them to a shiny wet finish on the lid). The only one that’s kind of iffy is Sweet Lucy. It’s almost glittery deep olive bronze brown on my eyes with a wee bit of fall out. I’m also a finger applier so that probably makes a difference. Always have been, (going on twenty years) probably always will be. I love it. I don’t regret buying it (purchased during sephora’s sale. $50 is an easier number to swallow for a makeup palette…though I miss the days when $30 seemed tops, you know?) and it ticks a lot of boxes for me and what I want out of a palette.
Thanks for your input! I just received my Mary Jane palette, and while I haven’t used it yet, it’s absolutely stunning to look at. I’m mostly a collector anyway. I purchased mine from Melt Cosmetics directly, and they inserted information about the palette, saying that the shimmer shadows are best applied with the fingers. Also, the reviews on Sephora are either love or hate, so it makes me wonder if there might be inconsistencies in the quality.
And here I was feeling so smug because I purchased this from BeautyBay before it sold out in Europe. This has been getting very disappointing reviews and I wish I had picked up the ND Glam instead when I had the chance. Returns are impossible on this side of the pond, so maybe I will try to sell it. Next time I will wait. Lesson learned.
I’m exactly in the same situation. I want to give it a chance and try it myself, but with no returning option, I don’t know what to do with the palette if I can’t make any use of it. ND’s Glam palette is in stock on Culty Beauty, by the way!
