Maybelline Silk Stone, Smoked Silver, Gunmetal, Serpentine Matte Metallics Lipsticks Reviews, Photos, Swatches
Silk Stone
Maybelline Silk Stone Color Sensational Matte Metallics Lipstick ($7.49 for 0.15 oz.) is a muted, medium-dark taupe brown with a silver and pink pearl strewn throughout. It had semi-sheer pigmentation, which did not build beyond medium coverage after three layers. I expect this one to look different from person to person as a result of the sheerness. On me, it ended up appearing pinker due to the pinker tone of my natural lip color. The texture was lightweight, comfortable to wear, and did not slide around after application but never tugged when I applied it. It lasted for three and a half hours on me and was non-drying.
The Matte Metallics is the newest finish in the Color Sensational range, and it’s supposed to pigmented, metallic, matte, and have a “comfortable creamy” feel. The formula had a smooth, waxy feel to me–it glided across the lips with ease but was thinner and did not lay down as much color in a single layer. Most of the shades were semi-opaque with some being slightly sheerer or more pigmented, but they were typically buildable. The lipstick was comfortable to wear and lasted between three and five hours on me with some shades being lightly hydrating and others were non-drying. There was a subtle, sweet scent but was significantly subdued compared to other Maybelline lip products.

Smoked Silver
Maybelline Smoked Silver Color Sensational Matte Metallics Lipstick ($7.49 for 0.15 oz.) is a muted, medium-dark purple with more neutral undertones paired with a metallic shimmer. It had medium pigmentation, which was buildable to semi-opaque coverage, but I could not get it to be fully opaque on me. The lipstick felt waxy going on, so there was never any tugging, and it was thinner without clinging to the lips uncomfortably. It did not apply evenly, and it was hard to get the shimmer to distribute evenly–this one would need a primer or lip liner underneath it to work well. This shade wore for just over four and a half hours on me with a bit of color that had pulled into my lip lines over time. The formula was neither drying nor moisturizing.

Gunmetal
Maybelline Gunmetal Color Sensational Matte Metallics Lipstick ($7.49 for 0.15 oz.) is a deep, bluish black with cool undertones and flecks of teal pearl and larger shimmer. It had semi-opaque pigmentation, which was buildable to slightly greater coverage but a black lip liner would get it to the finish line. The consistency was lightweight, thin but not clingy, and had a waxy, glide-on feel when applied directly to lips. It could have applied slightly more evenly as there were areas that did not seem quite as intense. This shade wore well for four and a half hours and was non-drying.

Serpentine
Maybelline Serpentine Color Sensational Matte Metallics Lipstick ($7.49 for 0.15 oz.) is a medium-dark green with cooler undertones and warmer gold shimmer. It had semi-sheer color coverage that was buildable medium pigmentation, but it did not apply evenly at all. The color looked warmer on my lips than it initially appeared swatches, so it may retain its coolness on someone with a cooler skin tone or different lip pigmentation. The consistency was waxy, thin but comfortable to wear, and never tugged when I applied. It wore well for four and a half hours and had a tendency to sit in my lip lines as it wore. The formula did not seem drying nor was it hydrating.

I don’t understand the metallic trend – sure they look good on Instagram or whatever, but I don’t think they’d work in real life. Still, I think it’s pretty cool that drugstore brands are venturing into new, creative territory!
I like metallic finishes personally, so I guess they’re for someone like me 🙂
I love metallic lips too. They are so gorgeous. I wish smoked silver performed better and wasn’t a drugstore brand because of the chemical and animal testing etc but that color is so beautiful!!!!
I really like metallics as well to give more definition to my lip shape.
I think if we get these in Canada I will pick out Gunmetal from this set.
Smoked Silver is SO pretty that I might just have to buy it and see if I can make it work with a primer and/or layering it over a liner.
Meanwhile, Serpentine leaves this green-lover just as cold as its dupes that have come before it. When will someone give us an awesome opaque sparkly green lipstick? I guess I’ll have to stick with making my own by layering glitter over a nice green lipstick like Kale.
Smoked Silver is a cool shade – I definitely think a lip liner would go a long way 🙂
It is interesting to see just how hard green lipstick is to do right!
AJ; yes to Kale! Me thinks I may finally take that plunge! ?
Doooo iiiiiit! It’s such a high-quality lip color, and it especially looks nice if you add a little pop of pigment to the center of your lips to give them more dimension.
Gunmetal looks magical!
It has a very neat tone to it!
Loving these for “fun” looks. Unfortunately I haven’t seen them in my local stores yet 🙁
I hope you find them soon! That’s the one bummer about drugstore stuff (if you want it in store) – can be hard to find it initially!
I like them too. Not a trend for me I never stopped wearing them. Love how they look on my lips.
I saw these in Walmart a couple weeks ago
Yesss to Gunmetal! Not entirely sure where I’d wear this around these parts, as AZ is much more conservative when it comes to makeup (yet not when it comes to tats and neon hair????) But I love that kick-butt teal shimmer and super deep base shade to set it off!
As for the others…wish Silk Stone had better, richer pigmentation, as the actual color is gorgeous! Same goes for Smoked Silver. No comment on Serpentine, because nope.
Serpentine could use some help for sure!
If anyone could rock gunmetal it’d be you Nancy!
None of these colors are calling to me, but I like how unique Gunmetal is
The whole range is more unique than not! 😀
Gunmetal was my fave from the sneakpeek. So glad it got a good grade! I’ll be picking it up as soon as my walmart has it!
I can’t wait for you to try it, Shannon!
Aw, come on, Maybelline! Don’t give us that “medium pigmentation” nonsense with colours this pretty!
Can you imagine it if it was opaque?!?!
Hope you had a fabulous trip, Rae!!
I did!! Thanks, Christine! 🙂
I wish Silk Stone was better!
Me too!
How I wish these fun colours had performed better. Smoked Silver is really pretty. I love Gunmetal, it looks a bit like oil spill on asphalt, not a way I thought I’d ever describe a lipstick.
It’s a pity Serpentine applied so unevenly and that it’s not opaque, it’s a green I would have loved to try. If it had applied like I had hoped to it would have been my second favourite green after Kale, and maybe one I could have gotten my lips on. Green is a really hard colour for me, it has to be just right, I only have one, from NYX and it suer makes people stare, I can just hope it’s in a good way 🙂
I liked the cooler and warmer tones of Serpentine together, at least in theory!
I also have NYX’s Risque, it’s my go-to on St. Patrick’s Day (and any other time I feel like it), and I definitely don’t care if people stare, haha. I figure it’s my makeup, my face, not theirs!
So true, and the makeup washes of, judgemental mentality doesn’t 🙂
I do find one thing interesting here, unconventional, I really don’t like to use that word, but you know what I mean, coloured lipsticks seem to sell out quitckly, but I hardly ever see anyone actually using any blues, blacks or greens, hardly even purples. I keep wondering why that is.
I hope people in other parts of the world are more into actually using fun colours.
Love the metallic finishes, and I am sure there are lots of beauty lovers who would adore those out there shades from the DS.
I agree!
i could work with gunmetal . i think it’d be fine paired w. a black or blackened blue liner .
bummer about serpentine , but i think your lips peeking through makes it look like a cool duochrome finish !
There’s an upside 😉
No appeal – neither colors nor finish. Easy pass.
Money saved!
I like Smoked Silver and Gunmetal.
They are cool colors!
