Makeup by Mario Master Metallics Eyeshadow Palette Review & Swatches
Master Metallics
Makeup by Mario Master Metallics 12-Pan Eyeshadow Palette ($48.00 for 0.36 oz.) is a new, permanent all-shimmer palette. Per the brand, the formula is supposed to be used dry for “a light wash” of color or wet for “full-coverage color.” If you’re someone who likes consistency in coverage and does not want to have to use fingertips or a dampened brush to get the most out of a formula, it’s probably going to cause more frustration than joy.
Where the formula sings is in the actual adhesion of the product to skin; it has a more melted, seamless look that has shine without being prone to emphasizing lid texture or lines. The coverage was all over the place; some shades were more of a “light wash” with a dry brush while others were fairly pigmented dry. The more emollient, almost spongy formula (a faint indent is visible if one presses on it) seemed particularly suited to pushing motions in the pan to pick up color when using them dry. They wore around eight hours on me before fading/creasing faintly.

Master Metallics #1
Master Metallics #1 is a light, yellow-leaning orange with tons of gold sparkle throughout. It had sheer color payoff applied dry and mostly opaque coverage applied with a dampened brush, but the texture was chunkier and more prone to fallout than most shades in the palette.
I felt it was a challenge to use it with a dry brush, so this was better with a fingertip or a dampened brush. It lasted decently for eight hours but had light fallout over time.

Formula Overview
-
The formula is supposed to have "high-impact shine" that can be used "dry or wet to achieve a light wash or full-coverage color." If you're someone who wants really intense pigmentation with a dry brush, not all shades will be capable of that, though several in the formula were very pigmented both dry as well as wet.
The consistency was almost spongy, a bit emollient but did not seem overly prone to compacting in the pan, which can be an issue with more emollient formulas. It was denser but thin and wasn't stiff to work with. The eyeshadows applied evenly to bare skin, blended out well in most instances, and went on very easily--they were easier to apply than I think the feel of them would have indicated.
The slip in the formula gave them a smoother, more "melted" look when applied to my skin, so they had shine but did not emphasize my skin texture. They wore between eight and nine hours on me before fading/creasing faintly.

Master Metallics #2
Master Metallics #2 is a medium, reddish-copper with warm undertones and cooler pink flecks of sparkle throughout. It had nearly opaque pigmentation applied dry, which was more than described. It had full opacity when applied with a dampened brush or fingertip.
The texture felt lightly emollient, almost spongy to the touch, but thin and lightweight with excellent, smooth adhesion to bare skin. This shade stayed on nicely for eight hours before fading a bit.

Master Metallics #4 is a muted, medium-dark blue-teal with cool undertones and a metallic sheen. It had semi-opaque pigmentation applied with a dry brush and fully opaque coverage applied with a dampened brush or a fingertip.
The texture was lightly creamy, dense but not stiff to work with, and picked up well with a dry brush. It wasn’t quite as blendable along the edge as one might want, as I couldn’t get a fully blown out edge. This shade stayed on well for eight hours before fading visibly.

Master Metallics #8 is a brighter, light-medium yellow gold with moderate, warm undertones and a high-shine, metallic finish. The texture was lightly emollient, dense but not thick or heavy, and it picked up better with a dry brush that I would have expected.
It had more semi-sheer, buildable color coverage applied with a dry brush, while a dampened brush yielded opaque coverage in a single layer. The product applied evenly to my skin and blended out well without losing its intensity. It stayed on well for eight hours before fading visibly.

Master Metallics #8
PiPPermanent in Palette.
Master Metallics #9
Master Metallics #9 is a brighter, medium red with moderate, warm undertones and flecks of pink and gold micro-sparkle throughout. Applied dry, it had more semi-sheer to medium coverage, while a dampened brush or a fingertip had full color payoff in a single layer, which was also more metallic and more even in its overall application.
The texture was lightly creamy with moderate glide, but I was surprised at how well the color applied to bare skin–normally these more emollient formulas will slide around and go on unevenly. It wore nicely for eight hours before fading noticeably.

Master Metallics #10
Master Metallics #10 is a medium, orange-copper with strong, warm undertones and a smooth, metallic sheen. It had medium to semi-opaque, lighter-appearing color and coverage applied with a dry brush. It had opaque pigmentation when applied with a dampened brush or a fingertip.
The texture was lightly creamy, smooth, and dense with moderate glide and almost squishy when I put my finger to it. The eyeshadow applied evenly to bare skin and blended out well. It lasted well for eight hours before fading a bit.

Master Metallics #11
Master Metallics #11 is a deeper red with subtle, warm undertones–almost orange-copper–and slightly cooler, truer red pearl. It had mostly opaque coverage applied dry, which was obviously far from a “light wash,” and the dampened application yielded fully opaque coverage and a more intense sheen.
The texture was smooth, dense, and thin without being too firmly-pressed into the pan, and there was a fair amount of slip to it, which was why I was impressed by how evenly and well the color adhered to my skin. It stayed on nicely for eight and a half hours before fading visibly.

Master Metallics #12
Master Metallics #12 is a charcoal black with bluish-silver shimmer throughout. It had a lighter color–grayer rather than black–with more medium coverage when applied dry. With a dampened brush or a fingertip, it had opaque color payoff and a smoother, metallic sheen.
The texture was lightly spongy, creamy without being a true cream eyeshadow and had excellent adhesion to bare skin. It applied evenly but was hard to get a truly diffused edge when blended out. It wore well for eight hours before fading noticeably.

Even though I’m a sucker for melted looking metallic eyeshadows, an entire large palette full of many persnickety, fussy shades would likely drive me bats. I really DO love the assortment of shades, though, so I just don’t know whether it’s worth the aggravation or maybe not?
Sounds like you just described my Clionadh palette.
Oh no’s, Janine! 🙀
Same here Nancy – I love metallic eyeshadows -but this one is too tricky to use.
In spite of this being really heavy on the dark pink and copper shades, I find I’m really drawn to this. I doubt I’ll get it but it has really caught my eye. I just with the overall rating were a bit better.
On another note, Christine – the pagination on the latest “Recommendations” question is working but I can’t actually submit anything – just see the recommendations. Is it meant to be this way because it’s asking for older palettes (2017-2018, I think)?
Hey Mariella,
This should be fixed – it has been on the to-do list to fix, but we just always have higher priorities. Those recs are “closed,” so they aren’t open to new recommendations, but they shouldn’t be showing on the site either.
I held my breath for years hoping that Makeup Geek would re-release the Mario palette and all just for the shades Mars and Aphrodite. Still hoping that someday it will end up on the secondary market. This is pretty but I have several palettes that are all metallic and I just don’t reach for them often.
I had the brief thought of wanting this palette. I’m over it.
Same here, Wednesday. It was a contender until now.
Something about it just doesn’t call to me. I would rather have a mixed palette of different textures or maybe it’s the color story or lack of it.
I think a makeup artist would be a good palette to try but have passed on Goss also.
I only like three, maybe four out of the colours in this palette, the teal, olive and black and I hardly ever use teal, so an easy pass.
I really like the looks you did, very inspirational.
What a mammoth palette to review Christine – this must have taken you ages to do as there was a lot of issues with this palette.
I do think there are a few shades that are duplicate of each other here – shades 2, 7 and 10; 9 and 11 seem fairly similar too.
I think this is a beautiful palette – but the issues regarding application make it tricky to use. It is very warm toned and contains shades that there are plenty of dupes for out in the marketplace.
I love your eye looks Christine.
Thank you as always, Genevieve <3
