MAC Enchanted Eyes/Mauve Eyeshadow Palette
MAC Enchanted Eyes/Mauve Eyeshadow Palette

MAC Enchanted Eyes/Mauve Eyeshadow Palette ($39.50 for 0.15 oz.) includes six eyeshadows with a mauve (more purple to me) theme. Three of the shades (Lightfully, Subtly Elegant, and Magic Moor) have been released in past palettes but are not part of the permanent range. This is a dud palette to me, and it’s pretty much a good example of why MAC’s holiday palettes are no longer highly anticipated. The holidays used to mean a good deal on great eyeshadows from MAC, but now it seems like rinse and repeat with so-so shades that do more to ruin the brand’s reputation than enhance it. Their lip and pigment sets are still (usually) worth checking out, at least.

Lightfully is described as a “white with pink reflects [with a Lustre finish].” It’s a pink-tinged white with larger white sparkle and a frosted finish. It was powdery and dry, which yielded semi-sheer color payoff. The color looked faded after seven hours of wear. Cle de Peau Purity (Right) (PiP, ) is more shimmery (95% similar). MAC 2x Dare #1 (LE, ) is more shimmery (90% similar). Dior Devilish #2 (LE, ) is less shimmery, warmer (90% similar). Wet 'n' Wild Petalette #2 (PiP, ) is less shimmery, warmer (90% similar). MAC She's Got Class (LE, $32.50) is more shimmery (90% similar). Makeup Geek Illusion (P, $12.00) is more shimmery, darker (90% similar). MAC Radial Pink (LE, $17.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Giorgio Armani Open (LE, ) is less shimmery (90% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Pretty Jazzed is described as a “soft lavender mauve [with a Velvet finish].” It appeared as a pinky-lavender with a satin finish in the pan, but there was virtually no color payoff whatsoever when I tried to swatch it. Even scraping at it, I just couldn’t seem to get much of anything to stick/show up. Hopefully, you’ll understand that this was difficult to test since it barely adhered, so the best I could tell was maybe four hours of wear. I tried to pick dupes that represented what you see in the pan, not necessarily the swatch. MAC Fizzy Rose (LE, $17.00) is warmer (90% similar). MAC Digit (DC, $17.00) is cooler (90% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Swing Out is described as a “pinky violet [with a Satin finish].” It’s a light-medium lavender purple with cool undertones and a satin to pearl finish. It had semi-opaque color payoff with a lightly soft texture (a little firm) that wore well for seven and a half hours. Milani Bella Violet (14) (P, $4.49) is darker (90% similar). Lancome Rich History (LE, $19.00) is less shimmery (90% similar). Sugarpill Frostine (PiP, $13.00) is less shimmery, lighter (85% similar). MAC Digit (DC, $17.00) is lighter (85% similar). Urban Decay Tainted (LE, $19.00) is less shimmery, darker (80% similar). ColourPop Eye Candy (P, $6.00) is lighter, warmer (80% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Daydream #4 (PiP, ) is more shimmery, darker, cooler (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

A Different Vibe is described as a “light beige-grey [with a Lustre finish].” It’s a sparkling, light-medium taupe brown with warm undertones and larger flecks of glitter. It had semi-opaque color coverage, which is better than some Lustres, though it has that chunkier consistency where the glitter typically separates from the base more. The color wore well for eight hours but had fall out issues. Tarte C'est La Vie (LE, ) is less shimmery (90% similar). Sephora Morning Freshness (DC, $10.00) is lighter (90% similar). Stila Rose Pewter (LE, $18.00) is more shimmery, darker (90% similar). ColourPop Nox (LE, $6.00) is darker, warmer (85% similar). MAC Morning Frost (DC, $18.00) is darker (85% similar). ColourPop Debutante (LE, $4.50) is less shimmery, darker (85% similar). ColourPop I Heart This (P, $6.00) is darker, warmer (85% similar). NABLA Cosmetics Chemical Bond (P, $8.00) is less shimmery, darker (80% similar). Lancome Tenacity (PiP, $19.00) is darker (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Subtly Elegant is described as a “light grey lilac [with a Matte finish].” It’s a muted, dark taupe brown with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It was dusty, thin, and semi-sheer while also suffering from issues blending out–it turned quite patchy. It lasted for seven hours. Sephora Cashmere Coat (DC, $10.00) is warmer (95% similar). Wet 'n' Wild Sweet as Candy #1 (PiP, ) is lighter (95% similar). theBalm #25 (P, $6.50) is darker (95% similar). NARS Bali (P, $19.00) is darker, cooler (95% similar). NARS Shade II (2015) (LE, $25.00) is warmer (95% similar). Persona Maverick (PiP, ) is darker (90% similar). Sydney Grace Legendary (LE, $5.25) is darker, cooler (90% similar). theBalm Dig It (LE, $16.00) is warmer (90% similar). Chanel Blurry Mauve #1 (PiP, ) is warmer (90% similar). Guerlain Les Cendres #1 (LE, ) is lighter (90% similar). Laura Mercier Stone Taupe (LE, $23.00) is warmer (90% similar). bareMinerals Priceless (LE, ) is lighter (90% similar). Tarte Power Player (LE, ) is warmer (90% similar). Too Faced Taupe Berry (LE, $16.00) is cooler (90% similar). bareMinerals Head Over Heels (LE, ) is darker (90% similar). Make Up For Ever S556 Taupe Gray (DC, $21.00) is darker (90% similar). Viseart Tabac (PiP, ) is warmer (90% similar). Make Up For Ever M558 Dark Taupe (DC, $21.00) is warmer (90% similar). Melt Cosmetics Assimilate (PiP, ) is cooler (90% similar). MAC Smoked Cocoa #2 (LE, $17.00) is darker (90% similar). Top 20 dupes listed, see the rest. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Magic Moor is described as a “rich blackened plum with pearlized pigment [with a Veluxe Pearl finish].” It’s a blackened purple with neutral-to-warm undertones and a pearly sheen. The texture was oddly dry and thin, particularly for a Veluxe Pearl! It came together as I pressed it against the skin, but it applied horribly with a fluffier brush (like the 239). It wore well for eight hours, so I guess that was the upside! LORAC Deep Purple (PiP, $19.00) is lighter (95% similar). Too Faced Better Together (LE, $16.00) is darker, warmer (95% similar). MAC 2x Dare #5 (LE, ) is darker, more muted, cooler (90% similar). Laura Mercier Violet Steel (LE, $23.00) is more shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Tarte Lavender Bubble Bath (LE, ) is darker (90% similar). MAC Stolen Moment (P, $20.00) is more shimmery (90% similar). Urban Decay Darkside (PiP, $19.00) is more shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Urban Decay Rockstar (DC, $19.00) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). NARS Subra (P, $29.00) is darker (95% similar). MAC Pepper (LE, $17.00) is darker, more muted (85% similar). MAC Moth Brown (LE, $17.00) is darker, cooler (85% similar). MAC Beautymarked (P, $17.00) is less shimmery, darker (90% similar). Estee Lauder Cyber Lilac (LE, $24.00) is lighter, brighter, warmer (85% similar). Urban Decay Blackheart (PiP, $19.00) is darker (85% similar). MAC Twilight Falls (LE, $21.00) is darker, more muted, warmer (85% similar). Fyrinnae Alchemist's Curse (P, $6.80) is more shimmery, brighter, warmer (80% similar). Chanel Poesie #4 (LE, ) is more shimmery, warmer (80% similar). MAC Black Slip (LE, $17.00) is warmer (95% similar). Urban Decay Rapture (LE, $19.00) is lighter, more muted (90% similar). MAC Dynamic Duo 3 #1 (LE, $17.00) is cooler (90% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Ye gads MAC, WHY!?!?! This is probably one of the worst quality holiday palettes that they’ve EVER put out! And to think; they JUST put out Macnificent Me 9-pan, which was really good quality and Guo Pei, which was excellent quality! But every holiday, they just seem to drop the ball when it comes to the palettes. ?

Nancy T Avatar

If I can still nab a Macnificent Me palette, that *may* just be a great little eyeshadow-on-the-go palette, I now think…after seeing these holiday duds!

Emmy Avatar

For $0.50 more you can get 8 ColourPop shadows that are pretty much guaranteed to be more buttery, longwearing and pigmented than these holiday hot messes. Does MAC just sell these and hope no one will notice that most of them are dollar store quality shadows?

Kimberly Avatar

As usual, I am not surprised by lack of quality in MAC shadows. I purchased the MAC Kelly Osbourne Bloody Brilliant Eye Quad a while ago, which had similar colors to this. The colors are beautiful but the formula was hard to work with and creased every time. I traded the palette away. Sucks when limited edition palettes are not even worth keeping.

I can’t believe how bad this palette is, especially Pretty Jazzed! Perhaps MAC just churns out the holiday palettes and doesn’t bother to test before releasing – what a dud product!

Well, how disappointing is this? The last 3 shades actually look like great shades for me but that F for Subtly Elegant is a real let-down. In some weird way, the first 2 or 3 shades don’t really seem to mesh with the other 3. I’ll check out what dupes I have and content myself with those!

Mariella Avatar

Christine, in the Dupe List, the rating for Subtly Elegant is showing as “A”. Is that a different/earlier version? Or is it a typo (or is it an error here? Gee, if only it had an A rating I might actually break down and buy this, as much as I’m not crazy about half the palette!)

Christine Avatar

So the official product listing will take an average of any and all ratings for the shade, so since it came out before, it’s averaging the F and its previous grade (which must have been an A of some sort)! The individual Glossover that you see on the actual blog post is for the specific instance. Like MAC Carbon has 10+ ratings that get averaged, lol.

RATS – if only I’d noticed it when it came out before so I could have got the better formulation. What I don’t understand is why, if MAC can make a good version, why they would release a crummy version. Wouldn’t you think they’d use the same “recipe”???

This is very disappointing. I went to Macy’s the other day and they started pre-sale for the holiday collection. I asked the artist at the Mac counter what she recommended and she told me the lipsticks, the lipgloss sets, brushes, and the highlighters. That gave me a major red flag about the quality of everything else. Great review like always though.

This is really sad 🙁 I can’t even see Pretty Jazzed on the swatch, must be one of the worst shadows ever. The entire MAC (mis) management team needs to be fired. It seems like no one there is paying any attention to quality

Astrild Avatar

This one remember me the interior life quad. I purchased that because I felt in love with the pretty shades but I can’t use it. The quality is horrible. That big fail taught me I can’t purchase anything before checking Temptalia’s review.

Candice Avatar

That’s really seriously poor performance!! With all the collections they come out with, they could’ve just not included this because it’s a bummer.

Phoebe Avatar

The colours looked so promising! i would have loved this but might have to pass if the quality is that bad, really want that swing out eyeshadow though! It’s beautiful!

MoMerrell Avatar

I had pre-sale ordered this and after I got home I realized why I didn’t like Mac shadows. ..haven’t picked it up yet but when I do today it will be to immediately return. Ugh

Linda Avatar

Not surprised at the F grade for the Velvet finish one – really don’t know why they make velvets at all, they are so un-pigmented and hard to work with. Lustre finishes are horrible for totally different reasons. Why can’t they all be matte or veluxe pearl? LOL.
