MAC Best Makeup Soft Serve Shadow
MAC Soft Serve Shadow ($22.00 for 0.17 oz.) is a new, limited edition cream eyeshadow formula that’s described as “buildable colour that’s long-wearing [and] non-creasing.” They are similar to formulas like ColourPop Super Shock, Dior Diorshow Fusion Mono, Chanel Illusion d’Ombres, and MAC’s own Electric Cool–it actually made me wonder why they didn’t continue to extend that range, but worth noting: these contain far more product than Electric Cool (those were only 0.07 oz.). I would say these are most like Chanel’s, as the majority are rather sparkly and offer less coverage than ColourPop or Electric Cool (on average). The texture is sponge-like, where you can press on the surface without leaving strong indentations with your brush, but if you pressed your fingertip in it, you would see a depression and even subtle fingerprints left behind. It’s not particularly emollient; it is one of the drier types of this kind of product that I’ve encountered. Most of them aren’t dry to the point where it would impede application. They are, as described, buildable, and I think the formula is best suited for someone who likes semi-sheer washes of lighter color with a fair amount of sparkle. I get all-day wear (10+ hours) with every shade–no creasing, fading, and very little fall out. I used MAC’s 242 brush to apply these, which applied most shades well enough, but some shades would thicken and bunch up, appearing uneven, if I attempted to build up the coverage. I think the finish and end result is similar to the Foiled Eyeshadows, which were a powder formula, but those were easier to work with overall (not as long-wearing, though). The collection launches online on May 26th, in-stores June 2nd.

It had sheer to semi-sheer color payoff, and this was a shade that tended to thicken/bunch up and appear uneven if I attempted to build it up beyond two layers of product. The eyeshadow was blendable but didn’t crease while drying down. It wore well for ten hours with minimal fall out. MAC Amethyst (P, $21.00) is more shimmery, darker (95% similar). MAC Bounce Around Soft Serve Shadow ($22.00 for 0.17 oz.) is described as a “light, cool taupey silver.” It’s a muted, medium-dark taupe with cooler, gray and silver chunky sparkle and a warmer, browner base color. It had sheer to semi-sheer coverage when built up. The texture was lightweight, fairly blendable, but the sparkle tends to pull away from the base color the more you blend it out. The color wore well for ten hours with light fall out appearing after six hours (not too noticeable, though). MAC Stroke My Ego (DC, $23.00) is less shimmery, darker (90% similar). MAC Put Me to Shame Soft Serve Shadow ($22.00 for 0.17 oz.) is described as a “mid-tone dirty taupe.” It’s a muted, dark taupe brown with warm undertones and a more metallic sheen with faint micro-sparkle. The sparkle in it was definitely finer and less prevalent compared to the other three shades featured in this review. It applied well, built-up without creating texture issues, and lasted for ten hours without creasing or fading. Viseart Chroma #4 (PiP, ) is less shimmery (90% similar). Hmmm, I was going to totally skip these, but now you have me thinking! I love to use the Chanel Illusion Ombres as sheer, sparkly toppers, but at $36 each, they add up. MAC Best looks like it would make a nice sparkling gold topper for a lot less. Glad to hear they last a long time and there’s no fallout, which I was worried about. I think I need to check these out, esp. Best
I think they are nice if you like ’em sheerer and enjoy the high amount of sparkle!
I love how these look. I rarely go with sheers, though, so I won’t be buying. They’d make nice toppers.
I hear ya! It’s like sheer gloss or lipstick, I think – it’s either your thing or not, and even if it is, you might not need more than a few in your arsenal.
How pretty! I thought these would be too similar to the ColourPop shadows but they seem to be more of an eyeshadow topper to me. I think Girls Girls would look beautiful patted over pink and purple shadows
They’re more like ColourPop’s super glittery shades but not quite as chunky – kind of that sheerer finish, better as a wash or patted on something else!
I’m going to get most if not all of these.I really like these types of shadows I have all of the Dior Diorshow Fusion Mono’s they are some of my favorites so I think I will use them to add sparkle and depth to some of my eye looks! Are they more saturated when applied wet like the MAC foiled shadows Christine?
No, I don’t think I’d use these damp – don’t know that I’d want to introduce the moisture to the product as a whole, but usually cream products damp get sheerer, lol! I did not try these damp, though, myself.
They seem sheerer than most of the Fusion Monos but similar in the type of formula – so think of these as a sheerer, sparkly version 🙂
All three looks beautiful I never thought I would like sheer shimmery toppers but I’m totally digging Girls, Girls! 🙂
Some of them are quite pretty on!
They are quite pretty but I think on my oily, quite hooded lids, they’d get lost lol. I prefer something with a bit more pigment and colour.
Even though I can only see myself possibly getting one of these, I actually love that soft, washed effect these give! Very easy to wear during our brutal SW summers. Fresh looking, too. The one I’m most interested in has yet to be reviewed, but I think I’m already in love with it: Plead Gilty!
Not sure about these. I love a sparkly eyeshadow, but I also like more opaques ones. I might try one, either of the ones that got an A. I like this kind of product, I have a Chanel one and one fromanother brand, can’t recall which at the moment.
Nice to see bounce around isn’t a total dud, but I will probably still pass.
Very pretty and subtle summer colours. I love Put Me to Shame the best. A beautiful eye look Christine.
Oooh these look really interesting. I can’t wait until they come out in New Zealand, although it’ll probably be a month or two away.
I’m not a fan of Chanel or Dior’s versions, so I guess it’s only logical that I’m unimpressed by these Soft Serve shadows. Easy pass!
Hrrrrrrrmmmm, I don’t know, I don’t think these are for me.
Ah these are sparklier than I expected, I’ll probably either skip or just get one. I wanted shimmery but not sparkly.
I love that twinkly look it has when it’s sheered out. I’m a total twinkle/sparkle freak.
I think they are too glittery for my liking.
