Laura Mercier Sleek and Chic Eye Colour Palette
Laura Mercier Sleek and Chic Eye Colour Palette ($55.00 for 0.36 oz.) includes twelve eyeshadows (some permanent, some limited edition) that run warmer with a mix of frosts and mattes. The palette has some misses, and there’s a general dryness in several of the shades that held the palette back from being really good.
Stellar is a medium-dark taupe with warm mauve undertones and a gray leaning paired with a soft, frost finish. It had good pigmentation with a soft, lightly dusty, texture that blended well and lasted for seven and a half hours on me. Tarte Platinum Bling (LE, ) is darker, cooler (90% similar). Bamboo is a softened, medium brown with warm undertones and a golden sheen. It had sheer coverage with a very firm texture–it was quite odd, given the rest of the palette is just right or too soft/dusty, but I really had to jab at the surface to get color payoff. Bronze Glow is a medium-dark, golden bronze with warm undertones and a sparkling, metallic sheen. It had good color coverage with a lightly dry texture where some of the sparkles didn’t bind with the base, so there was some initial fall out during application. Otherwise, the color wore well for eight hours (and I didn’t notice any fall out during wear). MAC Tempting (P, $17.00) is lighter (95% similar). Wet 'n' Wild Comfort Zone #9 (PiP, ) is lighter (95% similar). Urban Decay Influence (Lightbeam) (LE, $19.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Dose of Colors Noli (LE, ) is darker (95% similar). African Violet is a medium-dark, rosy plum with larger gold sparkle. The texture isn’t as smooth as other shades, as you can feel the sparkle loosen from the base color. It had a tendency to sheer out on the skin, so I’d recommend using this with a lightly tacky base for best results. The color wore for seven hours with some fall out during wear. Laura Mercier African Violet (PiP, $23.00) is cooler (95% similar). Hourglass Exposure #5 (PiP, ) is less shimmery (90% similar). MAC Great Beyond #1 (LE, $21.00) is less shimmery (90% similar). Cherrywood is a muted, medium-dark plummy brown with warm undertones and a pearly shimmer. It had so-so pigmentation with a drier texture that applied better than I expected, as it was more buildable in practice. It wore well for seven and a half hours before fading. NARS Montparnasse (Right) (DC, $25.00) is lighter (95% similar). NARS Real Surreal (LE, $28.00) is cooler (90% similar). Lancome Colour du Jour (P, $19.00) is less shimmery, darker (90% similar). Plumifique is a muted, medium-dark plum with warm undertones and a pearly sheen. This is cooler and less brown-based compared to Cherrywood (but I think they’re too similar to have both personally). It had decent color payoff with a soft, lightly dusty texture that was thin but blendable and built-up well. The eyeshadow held on well for seven and a half hours. Make Up For Ever S832 Ash Plum (DC, $21.00) is darker, cooler (95% similar). MAC Frock Talk (LE, $17.00) is lighter (95% similar). MAC A Medley of Mauves #3 (PiP, $21.00) is darker (95% similar). Noir is a medium-dark black with cool undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation with a lightly dusty, thinner texture that could have been more blendable on the skin. It wore well for eight hours, though. Make Up For Ever M100 Black (DC, $21.00)(100% similar). LORAC Navy #7 (LE, $19.00)(100% similar). Too Faced Snow Angel (LE, $16.00)(100% similar). Another palette I snapped up worried it would sell out. I expected it to be awesome because I love the eye artist palette. I have not used it yet because I can only use so much shadows and I prefer to return unused. I’m not liking the review. Probably going to have to return this one. It’s pretty and a primer would make it useable. But, for $55, it should be better.
I wish it was better! I bet you have some dupes, at least 🙂
That’s too bad, it’s one of the more affordable Laura Mercier palette I’ve seen and I had my eyes on it 🙁
🙁 Maybe with a primer?
Definitely not as good as the LM Artist Palette! Cannot understand how they could screw up Bamboo or African Violet, or put two nearly identical shades in the same palette. Easy pass for me then. But I have ( for my billionth time! ) considered getting either the LMAP, or just an African Violet single shadow because I’m swimming in palettes! LoL!
Bamboo was so odd – it was the only one who had that firm texture within the palette!
Seems like all LM’s offerings lately have been somewhat *meh*
The Caviar Stick set was good, though 🙂
I really like the colors in this, so I was hoping for a better grade. Bamboo makes me sad. Now I don’t know if the quality on the rest of the colors is good enough to justify the price for me. I have African Violet and I probably have dupes for the other shades.
If you have enough dupes, I might pass! I like the color combo, but it wasn’t as good as I had hoped!
Yeah, I’ve decided to pass. There are certainly better things I can spend my money on.
African Violet is such a gorgeous color!
It is!
Argh, I can’t find this on the Canadian Sephora site!
Oh no! 🙁
Looks like the quality is not there compare to the artist palette came out this time in 2013. I might just pick up a backup from sephora. Love that one!
Definitely not the brand’s best palette!
This is a really warm palette of varying quality. I think, by looking at the long list of dupes, that there are many similar colours out there in the market already. An easy pass.
Love the eye look you have done Christine – it is gorgeous.
Thank you, Genevieve!
The bottom layer would get all the use from me with the excpetion of Stellar. How do you think this stacks up to the Artist palette?
That’s not bad! I think the Artist palette was better.
I think I have at least two other LM palettes that have Morning Glory and African Violet in them. I think I can probably safely pass on this one.
They really LOVE their African Violet!
I feel like the ABH Self Made palette is better choice -it’s $ 20 cheaper, scored a B+, and has more interesting mix of colors. I do like African Violet though, might buy as single during Sephora sale, but since it’s in almost every palette, I’m hoping it will eventually show up in a palette I like
The Self-Made palette is my pick – and I agree, more unique between the two!
That’s what I ended up going with. I can’t wait for it to arrive.
I was planning on getting the re-released 2013 artist palette but seeing this review has me worried that the quality on the re-release may have gone down. All the shades from 2013 were either A or A- but the Espresso Bean and African Violet shades in this one seems to have gone down in quality.
Christine, would you say that there is a perceivable shift in quality of those two shades in this new palette from the 2013 artist palette?
I don’t know if it’s really a quality difference in a general sense or just different finishes. African Violet seems to be better and worse on an individual basis – like there are people who hate it in the original Artist palette for being quite sheer!
Think I have dupes but love Laura Mercier. You always make shadows look so good. I will probably pass on this one.
I like the colors a lot! Too bad the quality isn’t really there.
I’ve been wanting African Violet for ages, so I hoped for this palette, but I doubt I’ll buy the palette. Will check if it comes to the LM counter and how much it’ll cost, though, as I quite like a lot of the other ES’s in it.
Is the permanent African Violet much better than the one in the palette?
African Violet really seems to have a high degree of variance from version to version 🙁
I don’t have this palette, but I find the permanent African Violet to be very good. I’d say it’s just as good or slightly better than the version in the Artist Palette re-release from this year.
I can’t find this on Sephora ‘s website. I’ve looked several times. I was hoping to get it in the VIB sale, but I guess not. I prefer some of the lighter shades in this one over the Artist’s palette. I’m not too concerned that Bamboo isn’t a good performer – I have plenty of shades like that.
Looks like it may have sold out 🙁
