Neon Orange

Huda Beauty Neon Orange Neon Obsessions Palette ($29.00 for 0.45 oz.) includes a mix of mattes and shimmers across deep yellow to tangerine to deep fuchsia. This was the most versatile palette in the Neon Obsessions series as it had a mix of depth, undertone, and finish that made it easier to create multiple looks without them all looking the same. The quality was good across the board with the shimmers being better with fingertips or a wet brush over fluffier brushes (which is true of most of the Obsessions’ shimmers), while the mattes were pigmented, blendable, and long-wearing. I did experience some strong staining with the fuchsia (#6) and light staining with a few other shades (noted below).

The Neon Obsessions palettes have a two-part label that peels back and reveals that they are “not intended for eye area.” Many of the shades use red and yellow color additives that are permitted by the FDA (such as Red 6, Red 22, Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6) for cosmetic use but are not permitted for “eye area.” Red 40, for example, is permitted for use in all cosmetics (no restrictions) in the EU (you’ll need to use the Colour Index Number, which starts with “CI”).

Neon Orange #1

Neon Orange #1 is a rich, neon yellow with strong,w arm undertones and a matte finish. It looked yellower applied but appeared warmer, more orange-toned (like literal orange juice, actually) in the pan. Depending on what this was paired it, I could see it looking slightly more orange. The texture was soft, lightly powdery, but blendable and retained most of its vibrancy and opacity over bare skin (but primer would help). It had nearly opaque pigmentation that stayed on well for eight and a half hours before slightly.

Ingredients

Talc, Mica, Polymethylsilsesquioxane, Nylon-12, Zinc Stearate, Dimethicone, Octyldodecyl Stearoyl Stearate, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Isononyl Isononanoate, Phenoxyethanol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Caprylyl Glycol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Titanium Dioxide (Ci 77891), Yellow 6 Lake (Ci 15985), Yellow 5 Lake (Ci 19140).

Neon Orange #2

Neon Orange #2 is a light orange with strong,w arm undertones and a sparkling, shiny finish. It had rich pigmentation in a single layer, but the texture was slightly denser and more cream-like, so it worked best with flat, synthetic brushes, wet brushes, or a fingertip as it was a bit stiff to work with using fluffier brushes. I applied by patting and pressing it onto my skin, which helped it go on evenly, smoothly, and prevented fallout. It lasted well for eight hours on me before creasing a touch.

Ingredients

Calcium Sodium Borosilicate, Talc, Calcium Aluminum Borosilicate, Phenyl Trimethicone, Tridecyl Trimellitate, Zinc Stearate, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Phenoxyethanol, Tin Oxide, Ethylhexylglycerin, Titanium Dioxide (Ci 77891), Yellow 6 Lake (Ci 15985), Yellow 10 Lake (Ci 47005), Yellow 5 Lake (Ci 19140).

Neon Orange #3

Neon Orange #3 is a bright, vivid red with strong, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had nearly opaque color payoff that adhered evenly to bare skin and blended out nicely. The consistency was soft, velvety, and thin without becoming prone to sheering out or sticking too heavily in one area. It wore nicely for eight and a half hours on me, but it did leave a faint stain behind after removal.

Ingredients

Bis(Glycidoxyphenyl)Propane/Bisaminomethylnorbornane Copolymer, Talc, Mica, Zinc Stearate, Dimethicone, Octyldodecyl Stearoyl Stearate, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Isononyl Isononanoate, Aluminum Hydroxide, Phenoxyethanol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Caprylyl Glycol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Titanium Dioxide (Ci 77891), Yellow 10 (Ci 47005), Red 6 (Ci 15850), Red 6 Lake (Ci 15850), Red 22 (Ci 45380), Red 28 (Ci 45410), Yellow 5 Lake (Ci 19140).

Neon Orange #4

Neon Orange #4 is a bright, medium pink with subtle, warm undertones and cooler, lavender shimmer and sparkle. It had good color coverage that adhered well to bare skin, but it was best applied by pressing into place as it was a creamier, denser consistency. It stayed on well for eight and a half hours before creasing faintly on me, and there was a touch of fallout over time.

Ingredients

Calcium Sodium Borosilicate, Talc, Phenyl Trimethicone, Tridecyl Trimellitate, Calcium Aluminum Borosilicate, Zinc Stearate, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Tin Oxide, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Titanium Dioxide (Ci 77891), Yellow 10 Lake (Ci 47005), Red 27 Lake (Ci 45410).

Neon Orange #5

Neon Orange #5 is a light orange with strong, warm yellow undertones and a matte finish. It was richly pigmented with a soft, velvety texture that wasn’t too soft nor too firmly pressed in the pan. Neon Orange #6

Neon Orange #6 is a deep, magenta pink with strong, cool blue undertones and a matte finish. The eyeshadow had intense color payoff in a single pass where a little went a long way. The consistency was soft, a little powdery in the pan, but it applied well to bare skin, blended out with ease, and retained its vibrancy even without a primer. It wore well for nine hours but did leave a strong stain behind that lingered into the next day.

Ingredients

Talc, Mica, Zinc Stearate, Polymethylsilsesquioxane, Nylon-12, Dimethicone, Octyldodecyl Stearoyl Stearate, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Isononyl Isononanoate, Phenoxyethanol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Caprylyl Glycol, Ethylhexylglycerin [+/- Titanium Dioxide (Ci 77891), Ultramarines (Ci 77007), Yellow 10 Lake (Ci 47005), Yellow 6 Lake (Ci 15985), Red 21 Lake (Ci 45380), Red 27 Lake (Ci 45410), Yellow 5 Lake (Ci 19140)].

Neon Orange #7

Neon Orange #7 is a light-medium orange with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had a soft, lightly powdery consistency and a touch of fallout during application as a result, though it was quite blendable. The pigmentation was nearly opaque in one pass and was buildable to full coverage with less than half of a layer on top. It stayed on nicely for eight and a half hours on me before showing signs of fading.

Ingredients

Talc, Mica, Zinc Stearate, Polymethylsilsesquioxane, Nylon-12, Dimethicone, Octyldodecyl Stearoyl Stearate, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Isononyl Isononanoate, Phenoxyethanol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Caprylyl Glycol, Ethylhexylglycerin [+/- Titanium Dioxide (Ci 77891), Ultramarines (Ci 77007), Yellow 10 Lake (Ci 47005), Yellow 6 Lake (Ci 15985), Red 21 Lake (Ci 45380), Red 27 Lake (Ci 45410), Yellow 5 Lake (Ci 19140)].

Neon Orange #8

Neon Orange #8 is a bright, medium-dark pink with subtle, neutral-to-warm undertones and a matte finish. The texture was lightly powdery, so there was some fallout if I wasn’t careful to tap off the excess prior to applying, but it was blendable and wasn’t prone to sheering out. It had nearly opaque pigmentation that applied well to bare skin and lasted well for eight and a half hours on me. There was a bit of staining left over but wasn’t too noticeable (relative to shades like Neon Orange #6!).

Neon Orange #9

Neon Orange #9 is a bright, highlighter yellow with a sparkling, metallic sheen. It was a yellow that was almost tinged with green but too yellow to be chartreuse. The texture was denser, lightly creamy, but thicker and worked best with a flat, synthetic brush or fingertip. It wore well for eight and a half hours on me before I noticed slight creasing.

While this palette does make a gorgeous Instagram eye look, I just can’t imagine these shades working in real life.

(But these Huda neon palettes are making me want to dig out my grown-up coloring books and colored pencils from a couple years ago! 🙂 )

Christine Avatar

I mean, I wore it out in my real life, so it’s not just for Instagram 🙂 I wore these kind of looks to college, graduate school, and even when I worked at city hall. It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but there are people who happily wear these types of colors in “real life.”

bridget Avatar

Hey Christine,
Is it nosy to wonder about what you studied in grad school? 🙂
I am in grad school myself and couldn’t help but wonder about it 🙂
Please let me know if you consider my question inappropriate!

dzymzlzy Avatar

They’re seriously gorgeous and so easy to work with. I am not usually one for experimenting with bright colors but I’ve worn this almost nonstop since I purchased it right after it was released. I was terrified at first but the colors just work so well together that even a noob like myself can manage.

SaffyTaffy Avatar

Seraphine, I know it all depends on your style, but I’ve been doing just one matte in the crease and one metallic on the lid, and it’s fantastic.

SaffyTaffy Avatar

I picked this one for exactly that reason! I felt like this one gave me the most versatility- I can do a pink eye, orange eye, yellow eye, or any combination. And you’re right that the yellow in here is very similar to the Neon Green. Plus the purplish dark pink is similar to the purple in Neon Pink.

Gilad Avatar

I was wondering if you (Christine) or anyone else ever uses these kinds of eyeshadow colors as blush? Do eye colors tend to be fatally more saturated than blush in general, or is it case-by-case ?
I haven’t done this much myself, but realize that these colors would work better for me on cheeks.(especially since not approved for use around eyes). Thanks!

Christine Avatar

You could definitely use it as a blush – you may find that they don’t blend as easily for a sheerer look in some cases, IMO! It really does depend in the formula and color, though. These are tiny pans, so it’s not the most functional way to use ’em.

Francesca Avatar

Hi! I don’t have any of these new obsession palettes, but I own manu of the previous obsession relases and sometimes I’ve used eyeshadows from the mauve, Coral, warm Brown and Amethyst as blush or bronzer. They worked nicely, however mi advice use ligh hand (like very pigmented blushes) and they worked best on bare skin, as under foundation (but Also having skin slightly wet from cream) Is a bit harder to blend them… You can use them of bare skin and blend and then put over your foundation (It isn’t a very heavy One) or pay some attention to apply them over your base… I tried both way and I received a lot of compliments that usually I do not receive when I use my every-day blush!

Tammy Avatar

I absolutely love the look that you’ve done with this palette!! That contrasting eyeliner looks so good with it. I know I couldn’t wear these colors but would sure love to try them anyway

Reka Avatar

God I love this. Made in China, so I’m not going to buy it new, but if it ever pops up on the second hand market, I will rejoice. That bright glittery yellow is so lovely I gasped when I saw its swatch (though it turns out to be v.similar to Colourpop Glowstix which I already have).

Michelle Avatar

I just turned 45 and I say bring on all that shimmery neon goodness. I love palettes like these for accent lid and bottom lash shades. They mix well with warm neutrals when you feeling adventurous but don’t want to commit to an entirely bright look.
