Ultra Star (777)
Dior Ultra Star (777) Rouge Dior Ultra Rouge Lipstick ($37.00 for 0.11 oz.) is a bright, medium orange with warm, red undertones and a satin finish. The pigmentation was nearly opaque in a single layer, which applied evenly and smoothly overall, though that was slight product in my deeper lip lines. It wasn’t noticeable from a normal viewing distance, though. It had a lightweight, slightly thinner consistency compared to the other shades (and it is already a thinner formula), so it wasn’t as smoothing of my lip texture as it could have been. It was comfortable to wear for the five and a half hours it lasted for, and the formula felt moisturizing to my lips.

Formula Overview
$37.00/0.11 oz. - $336.36 Per Ounce
The formula is supposed to be "incredibly long-wearing" with "12 hour" wear paired with an "ultra-comfortable" feel and "high-pigmentation." First and foremost, no, it doesn't last 12 hours, and most shades don't come close--they last between four and six hours typically. There were a few, like deeper reds, that still had some product remaining after eight hours, but the lighter shades never made it through the meal. They have a very creamy consistency, balm-like, and within 30 to 45 seconds, they develop a slight cling, almost like a film, but it wasn't actually clingy or uncomfortable--I could just tell that there was a texture change as it "set." However, the "setting" of this formula just has that feeling, but the product would still transfer onto a glass or disappear during a meal.
Most of the shades were semi-opaque to opaque and applied evenly and smoothly across my lips without tugging or dragging. Some shades were more smoothing than others, but most shades looked flattering over my natural lip texture. The formula was lightweight, comfortable, and lightly to moderately hydrating over time. They had a heavy, powdery, floral scent that was noticeable for the first half hour of wear, though I didn't notice any taste.

Ultra Dior (999)
Dior Ultra Dior (999) Rouge Dior Ultra Rouge Lipstick ($37.00 for 0.11 oz.) is a medium, orange-red with warm undertones and a satin finish. It had good color payoff in a single layer and required a second layer for full coverage. It had a creamy, emollient texture that felt a bit more balm-like than like a typical lipstick, as it was thin without being clingy or sheer. The texture felt a touch clingier after a minute of “setting” on my lips, but it still retained the shine of its natural finish. The lipstick stayed on well for five hours and was lightly moisturizing while worn.

Ultra Atomic (660)
Dior Ultra Atomic (660) Rouge Dior Ultra Rouge Lipstick ($37.00 for 0.11 oz.) is a bright, medium fuchsia pink with subtle, cool undertones and a satin finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation that applied fairly evenly, but it was thinner and had moderate slip, which resulted in a formula that clung to my lips more noticeably and emphasized my lip lines. The lipstick glided across my lips and felt smooth going on, but I was surprised that highlighted my lip texture as most of the range did not. It lasted for four and a half hours on me and was lightly hydrating.

This entire collection has ben a big disappointment in performance, obviously. Not even 1 A, IIRC. It’s one thing if something DS level Cs out, but at the price of an Audacious, these should be first rate.
They’re getting rated so low because they have a 12-hour wear time claim, but aside from that, they’re a good lipstick.
Christine, I see on Dior website that the claim if for a period up to 12 hrs:
“Rouge Dior Ultra Rouge delivers high colour impact and wear for up to 12 hours.*
* Instrumental test carried out on 20 subjects.”
Was the original claim for a 12-hour wear time?
Hi Nicole!
Confused – your comment says 12 hours – whenever a brand says up to, I use the end (since that is an A+). I spread the points across a 12-hour period, e.g. if it lasted to 10 hours, then I take 10/12 to get the amount of points to assign it for longevity.
I’m sorry for the confusion. I wanted to say that Dior’s longevity claim is for a period of “up to 12h” and not for absolute 12h , which means that the lipstick may last up to 12 but not necessarily. I understand that you take the 12h as absolute value and you start from that. It’s just that they protect themselves by using the “up to”.
I would be curious to know about the instrumental methods they used to measure/quantify the lasting power on the 20 subjects (in those 12h did they eat & which types of food, did they drink & which drinks?) because a lipstick may last longer without eating/eating much, with moderate drinking and moderate talking, but that’s not realistic for the everyday life. Tbh I’m reluctant even when I see an 8-hour wear time claim. I remember testing the Dior Addict Lip Tattoo stain when I was at home, drinking water and coffee and not eating anything for a 6-hour period. It wore wonderfully. The same 6-hour at the office though, talking with clients and with colleagues at meetings (still drinking only water and coffee) resulted in a less wear time.
Yeah, I have no idea how they run the test and what they mean by instrumental methods – e.g. is like… a speck of non-natural lip matter left on the lip after 12 hours? What shades were tested? None of them came close to 12-hour wear, though, for me and I think I have 22 or 23 of the shades in the range. You don’t see much guidance by any brand re: what it should look like – like is 12-hour wear solid wear? A foundation that says it lasts 12 hours, does it look about the same after 12 hours of wear or is that just when it needs to be touched up?
The way I test is if it’s 4-6 hour wear, I usually test between meals and then see how it makes it through THE meal (and remove and wear a new shade to test). If they’re making claims like 8-12 hours, then I think it is realistic to expect it to last through a meal (and I wouldn’t pit it against you know, fried chicken per se). I do drink water/coffee/tea throughout the day, but I usually push my inner lower lip around the glass/mug so that there’s minimal transfer.
I try to test things against their claims, but I’m also not going to not eat/drink for six hours or 12 hours!
Again, and I don’t want to sound like a broken record, I am saved from wanting any of the 3. Because dupes. I’m really surprised by how *common* most of the shades are, but not the best formula. Not exactly lust-worthy, save for a few shades.
The shades are really vibrant and they look comfortable on your lips, but regardless of what a brand says, I would never expect a lipstick to last longer than a few hours.
Dior’s lipsticks in Aus are often around the $60-80 mark and I would never spend that amount of money on a lipstick.
