ColourPop Boa Matte X Lippie Stix

ColourPop Matte X Lippie Stix ($5.00 for 0.035 oz.) is supposed to have “full coverage” in one stroke that is “long-wearing” with “the smoothest, most velvety glide” while still retaining a “super matte finish.” The formula glides on really well, and they have a smooth, lightweight texture that feels thin and has a more powdery, matte finish on the lips. Some are really comfortable to wear for most of the time, a few are somewhat drying earlier on and may look drier or “cracked,” though the majority look good applied. They are longer-wearing; not quite as long as the Ultra Matte or Ultra Satin range but longer than the average lipstick. I found most shades that I’ve tested thus far (about half the range) to be comfortable for most of the time. The formula held up fairly well to eating and very well for drinking/sipping out of a cup or mug. As they are thin, they don’t really slide or move around on my lips, so once they do start to fade or lose color, it’s better to re-apply than try to smooth back into place. The formula has a light vanilla scent but no discernible taste. They come in the same type (and amount) as the regular Lippie Stix range, so it’s worth noting that they contain less than a standard lipstick tube at 0.035 oz. (the average tube is around 0.10 oz.).

Neat discovery: the consistent, thinner (but opaque) formula makes them very easy to blend into each other for an ombre lip effect.

ColourPop Boa Matte X Lippie Stix ($5.00 for 0.035 oz.) is a light-medium, pinky lavender with cool undertones and a matte finish. It had opaque color payoff, but the texture “cracked” visibly on me from the get-go, even though it had seemingly good coverage and didn’t drag at all (very velvety applied). The color wore six hours with the color still remaining “cracked” but didn’t seem to work into lip lines from there. It was drying after six hours. ColourPop Pepper (LE, $7.00) is darker (90% similar). Makeup Geek Arabesque (LE, $12.00) is darker (90% similar). MAC Kawaii Party (LE, $18.50) is darker (90% similar). MAC Dodgy Girl (LE, $19.00) is lighter, cooler, glossier (85% similar). ColourPop Seesaw (LE, $6.50) is warmer (85% similar). Rare Beauty Daring (P, $20.00) is darker, cooler (85% similar). ColourPop Koala (LE, $6.50) is darker, cooler (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

ColourPop Back Up Matte X Lippie Stix ($5.00 for 0.035 oz.) is a muted, purpled plum with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had good color payoff with even, smooth coverage that applied without tugging or dragging on the lips. The color lasted for seven hours and was lightly drying. MAC Evening Rendezvous (LE, $19.00) is darker (95% similar). MAC Dancing Flowers (LE, $19.00) is darker, brighter (90% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty Vinyl Dream (P, $30.00) is glossier (90% similar). Sephora Tender Love (55) (P, $14.00) is lighter (90% similar). Makeup Geek Tomboy (P, $12.00) is darker, more muted, glossier (90% similar). ColourPop Sweet Stuff (LE, $7.00) is darker, brighter (85% similar). Urban Decay Wavelength (P, $22.00) is lighter, cooler (85% similar). Sephora Very Vintage (87) (P, $14.00) is darker, warmer (85% similar). MAC Hey, Boy, Hey! (LE, $19.00) is darker, brighter (85% similar). ColourPop Are & Be (DC, $6.50) is darker (85% similar). Bite Beauty Aquarius (LE, $26.00) is darker, cooler (80% similar). ColourPop Viper (DC, $6.50) is darker, warmer (80% similar). Pat McGrath Antidote (LE, $38.00) is darker, glossier (80% similar). NARS London Calling (P, $26.00) is darker, more muted (80% similar). Makeup Geek Urbanista (P, $12.00) is darker, more muted, glossier (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

ColourPop Climax Matte X Lippie Stix ($5.00 for 0.035 oz.) is a slightly muted, deep purpled-blue with cool undertones and a matte finish. It had mostly opaque color payoff, but it could have been richer for true, one-stroke opaque coverage. The texture felt smooth and glided on without dragging, but the thinner consistency seemed prone to emphasizing lip lines and natural texture of my lips. The color lasted for six and a half hours with slightly uneven fading overall. The biggest upside is the non-liquid format makes it easier to apply around the edges. Too Faced Who's Zoomin' Who (P, $21.00) is darker (90% similar). Sephora Violet Vertigo (103) (P, $14.00) is brighter (90% similar). Anastasia Cobalt (P, $18.00) is darker, glossier (90% similar). MAC Indigo-go (LE, $19.00) is lighter, warmer, glossier (90% similar). MAC Midnight Troll (LE, $19.00) is lighter, brighter, glossier (80% similar). Urban Decay Heroine (DC, $18.00) is darker, glossier (90% similar). KVD Beauty Poe (P, $18.00) is darker (85% similar). Makeup Geek Wild Child (P, $12.00) is lighter, brighter, glossier (85% similar). KVD Beauty Echo (P, $20.00) is darker, more muted, warmer (85% similar). KVD Beauty Bruno (LE, $20.00) is more shimmery, darker, brighter (80% similar). KVD Beauty Dagger (P, $20.00) is lighter (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

ooh that blue is nice! I’m really into blending lip colors recently so if the texture’s good for that then I’m even more tempted to buy some of these…

random question out of nowhere, but I noticed you tend to do product shots for Colourpop stuff against a black background instead of a white one. any reason for that or am I just paying too much attention to irrelevant crap lol. either way your photos are as high quality as ever, I’m just curious!

ColourPop’s packaging is very white, so if I photograph all white on white background, it makes it hard to maintain the product’s shape in photos. In general, for packaging that is mostly white, I try to photograph on black instead, it is not specific to ColourPop 🙂 If it’s just one product, then I might not make the effort to change the set-up to accommodate for a black background, though.

Yaaaay!!! So glad Backup and Climax scored well. When Colour Pop announced the 10% flash sale, I threw them into my cart, as the initial swatches looked ok, can’t wait to get them. BTW, thanks for posting sneak peeks -really helps when you can’t get to full reviews. During the sale, Colour Pop’s website crashed due to heavy demand, so they implemented an electronic waiting line, I had to wait 3 hours on Saturday before putting my order in, but at least I got everything I wanted, except for Hollywood Blvd, which was sold out, I think even before the sale started!

If it weren’t for fear that Climax would make me look either Minion yellow or Oompa Loompa orange, I’d be tempted to try it. I’m afraid the color wheel would kick into overdrive with my warm tones, though. It looks like a relatively well-performing lipstick for that bright “blurple” shade.

I missed out on MAC Evening Rendevous, which was LE. If Back Up does well, I might have to get a backup of Back Up !

Boa reminds me so much of OCC Digitalis — might be good to pick up as I like the color for day, but lip tars are 1,000 times too much effort for putting on at 8 am.

This is the first Colourpop product that has been a total dud for me. I’ve tried Boogie (Bootie?) and Boa. Both went on great, and I prepped my lips with a scrub, balm, wiped off the balm etc. They got incredibly patchy and dry. Disappointed.

Back up looks so pretty. I hope it looks good on me. Hope I can get my shipment in before I leave for my vaca, but I doubt it since I ordered during the sale. But I was able to snag it. Have a huge lippie haul from them. 🙂

Back Up is stunning on you! I think it’s a little too loud for my skin tone but I’m obsessed with it here. 🙂

Climax looks super wearable for a blue lipstick! I might just give it a shot. The other colors are pretty, but nothing special, although I am loving how Back Up looks on you!

Great review! Nothing horrible here. I’m happy I ordered three of these (Bootie, Love Life and Poppin’), and I hope they perform well! Back Up is now on my wishlist too: it’s a gorgeous shade 🙂

Just FYI..
I got the bright fuchsia one when they were giving it away with an order. It was such a mess I tossed it after one use. The problem is the pigmentation/staining.. which would usually be a good thing.. but in this case was out of control. If you get it the slightest bit outside your lip line.. you can’t get it off. If you wipe your mouth and it smears.. you can’t get it off. If you try to remove it entirely.. you can’t get it off. It was terrible, I had to completely scrub around my entire mouth and go in with concealer, and you could still tell there was a stain. I’d avoid the bright shades for sure.
