Sheer Lipglosses | 2019 Editor's Favorites

Here’s how I know I could never have a minimal collection (in a non-blogging world): I just find… I love it all. I love variety! I love sheer gloss as much as I love a really richly pigmented gloss (see this year’s favorites here), and I really wear all kinds of shades, undertones, and finishes.

As far as reviewed in 2019 glosses go, I think Pat McGrath Astral Flash Dance was one of my more used shades–it adds subtle pearl and nice shine on top of most lipsticks.  I also quite enjoyed a few of the new shades that Marc Jacobs released during the year, though the formula tends to over-market itself, which is often where it falls short!

If you’re unfamiliar with how I like to do my year-end favorites, here’s the low down: I pull from the products I reviewed in 2019, regardless of whether they were new, limited edition, or an established range I’ve only just gotten around to reviewing. These are personal favorites, so they may or may not be the highest rated products reviewed during the year (though they will tend to be better rated, naturally!). (You can check out best of 2018 if you missed it.)

Please help us streamline the comments' section and be more efficient: double-check the post above for more basic information like pricing, availability, and so on to make sure your question wasn't answered already. We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! Thank you for understanding!

What were your most used lipglosses this year? MAC Diamond In The Rough, Cake Top and one by Patrick Starrr (cannot see the name on the bottom), PMG Aliengelic, Fenty Gloss Bomb in Universal, Fu$$y, Chocolit and Cheeky.

Do you think you’ll wear more or less lipgloss in 2020? Same as my usual!

What was your favorite way to wear lipgloss during the year? Mostly, I use them as toppers to get some extra dimension on flat matte lipsticks, especially nude and MLBB types of shades.

What were your most used lipglosses this year? — ColourPop Flying Horses (panned it!), Buxom Dolly, Smith & Cult Sweet Suite. I bought and returned Fenty Fu$$y because I couldn’t stand the fragrance (too much like the Peach Schapps from my baby high school years and definitely a scent aversion for me!)

Do you think you’ll wear more or less lipgloss in 2020? — More, as I’m really enjoying how hydrating glosses these days can be.

What was your favorite way to wear lipgloss during the year? — By itself, not on top of lipstick. I still don’t quite understand the concept of gloss applied on top of lipstick (seems too thick to me?) or lip toppers (do these just add sparkle?). Someone please explain, and thank you in advance!

What were your most used lipglosses this year? Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb in Fenty Glow (Universal) was #1 by a wide margin. (I think it’s the most perfect clear lipgloss ever made. I’m obsessed with it, and keep it in my purse at all times.) Also, Fenty Gloss Bomb in Fu$$y, MAC Grand Illusion Liquid Lipcolour in Ruby Princess, MAC Lipglass in Queen P, and NARS Full Vinyl Lip Lacquers in Abruzzo, Cape Town, and Everglades.

Do you think you’ll wear more or less lipgloss in 2020? More, as fashion seems to be getting over the matte lip trend, and more great glosses are coming out.

What was your favorite way to wear lipgloss during the year? My favorite way was to wear Fenty Glow (Universal), either by itself or over anything and everything. I love a minimalist look with sheer red gloss in summer. Towards the end of this year, I’ve been loving MAC Lipglass in Counting Stars over Milani Color Statement Lipstick in Dulce Caramelo.

As a general rule, I wear opaque glosses alone, and sheer shimmery or sparkly glosses as toppers. Tinted sheer or medium-coverage glosses get worn either way.

What were your most used lipglosses this year? Fenty Fussy, Fenty Glow, Pat McGrath Divine Rose

Do you think you’ll wear more or less lipgloss in 2020? Same

What was your favorite way to wear lipgloss during the year? I wear them alone. They are so quick and easy.

I’ve been wearing lip gloss more in the past year and expect to continue the same. My lips are tired of the matte, drying lippies. And I tend to wear the sheer ones that make my lips shiny with my more colorful eye looks so I don’t look overly made up like at work.

What were your most used lipglosses this year? The Em Cosmetics Glosses were by far my most used, along with a couple Dose of Color and Milani Glosses.

Do you think you’ll wear more or less lipgloss in 2020? Probably more! I love bullet lipsticks and lipglosses the most at the moment.

What was your favorite way to wear lipgloss during the year? On its own, or with a bullet lipstick blotted on my lips. I don’t do the whole lip liner/lipstick/lip gloss combo. Too much work to maintain throughout the day.

I love and have always loved gloss! My most used by far this year was Fenty Glow! I’ll probably wear more lip gloss this year, although I do wear it most days anyway! My favorite way to wear it is just alone, but I also love a good gloss and lipstick combo.
