Best Beauty Products | April 2018 Report
Here’s a look at the top 25 products reviewed in the month of April, plus a summary of how many products and brands were reviewed and a break out of ratings! 🙂
I think it’d be fun to go through what we used, purchased, resisted, and so forth each month, here are some questions:
- What were your favorites from the last month?
- What didn’t impress you?
- Did you return anything you purchase?
- Or successfully resist temptation?

What were your favorites from the last month? Mac pro long wear nourishing waterproof foundation, mac studio fix fluid, too faced peachy mattes, becca x chrissy teigen palette
What didn’t impress you? MoroccanOil hair mousse
Did you return anything you purchase? MoroccanOil hair mousse
Or successfully resist temptation? Marc jacobs bronzer, ABH soft glam, ABH x amrezy
I love the MAC Nourishing Waterproof Foundation. I have their Studio Fix Fluid that I’m working through now but I want to buy the Pro Longwear one again!
The ABH Soft Glam and Amrezy Highlighter are so nice but tbh if I didn’t have 2000 points at Ulta to cash in, I think I would have passed and been content. It’s a really nice palette. It’s just not anything new that will make you put down all your other neutral palettes and there are so many gold highlights and most people have at least 3 in their collection already 🙂
Favorites last month: I am loving the NIOD Concentrated Eye Serum and use it paired with my Dr. Dennis Gross Ferulic and Retinol Gel. I am not sure if everyone can pair them but although my skin is porcelain and somewhat translucent it isn’t particularly sensitive or reactive and I am not suffering any ill effects from the pairing. I love the ColourPop Saucey eye shadow palette that I picked up the beginning of last month and the PUR Visionary palette. I have been using the Becca Hydra Mist powder and enjoying that also.
What didn’t impress me: The Viseart eye shadow primer did nothing nice for my 64 year old lids and didn’t prolong the wear of my shadows. The Bad Girl Bang mascara was a total fail. Clumped my lashes something terrible. I have been using the WooLash for two months now and although I think it might have increased the number of lashes I have, it has done nothing for length which Rapid Lash did both before it just stopped working for me. On to trying LaLash!
Return anything: No
Successfully resisted temptation: I caved and bought the Pat MacGrath Subliminal Platinum Bronze eye shadow palette after resisting for several months. I was enabled by Tammy, thank you!! I am really enjoying it and the packaging is stunning. I also picked up the Nars Erdem collection and really love it also. Each of the four products I purchased are gorgeous with my least favorite being the highlighter stick but I am using it on my inner corners to highlight and it is working there. I posted an eye look on my IG. Bare in mind that I have 64 year old eyelids and no shadow completely takes that crepey skin away, LOL!!

Really pretty eye look, Deborah S.!
I have older eyes, too, and I love NYX Proof It Waterproof Eyeshadow Primer. My shadows and brow products stay in place all day and it’s very inexpensive, especially when Ulta has a BOGO sale. (Just make sure you get the one called “waterproof,” and not the one called “hydrating.” Same packaging, so it’s easy to accidentally pick up the wrong one.)
I’m interested in knowing how those lash products are working for you. I have short, sparse lashes, but I’ve heard that some lash enhancers can alter the color of the eyes, so I’ve been afraid to try them. My eyes are green and I want to keep them that way!
Hi Seraphine,
Thank you. I have used one of the NYX eye shadow primers and remember liking it but can’t remember if it was the hydrating or waterproof. I will have to dig it out and look at it when I get home. I am currently using the Milani primer pretty much all the time and occasionally the MAC Prime and Fix for eyes. I like both of them a lot also. The Milani has a slight smoothing effect which helps my very crepey eye lids. Short of having plastic surgery there isn’t anything that is going to give my over 60 eye lids any really meaningful help but I can see a difference with the primers I do use and since I see my eyes everyday I know that there are days when they are smoother and days with they are really crepey.
I used the Rapid Lash for over a year and then went on a 2 1/2 month trip and ran out. Couldn’t find it as I travelled across Canada. When I got home I ordered and started using again and never could get it to work as well as it had originally. I had great response to it originally. (Side note; I had chemotherapy in 2000 and the places I hoped for good hair regrowth lashes, brows, hair on my head, didn’t grow back in patches. Places I didn’t want the hair to come back, armpits, legs and other places where hair really shouldn’t grow, came back in thickly!! Go figure.) I got thicker and longer lashes with less fall out.
I studied on-line and finally decided to try WooLash because of the claims and have been using it through 2 tubes and no response. I had been trying to avoid LiLash as it is stupid expensive and like most eye lash re-growth products you have to use them forever or they stop working. So we will see.
I know some people have had good response to Revitalash also and I haven’t tried that one so maybe will try that before LiLash. La Lash is the one that the Pixiwoo sisters swear by.
As to the changing of color in the iris, I have heard this also and also that some of the products darken the lash line and that while the product stops working for your lashes, apparently any changes to skin and color are permanent, go figure! I have brown eyes so probably wouldn’t have a significant change. If I had blue or green (I wish) I don’t know if I would chance it, to be honest. There are several home made lash treatments that many people on social media swear by and might be worth a try also. The most popular is organic castor oil applied at the base of the lashes with a Q-tip daily. I don’t think it is purported to cause any changes in color. I have linked below a comparison of 2018 best eye lash growth products. I chose the Woo Lash last year as it was number 1 but this year it isn’t. The number 1 this year is an all natural product and much cheaper so might be worth a try. I haven’t had a chance to read the article yet or look at the studies but will before I order any thing else. Hope this helps.
I am just home from surgery and still under the effects of anesthesia and sedative so hope this is making sense!!

Thank you for your great reply! Made a lot of sense. I hope you are feeling better after your surgery.
I am in my late 50s and dealing with the onset of crepey eyes, so I feel your pain! Also, I have been through chemo almost as long ago as you, and my eyelashes and brows have also grown back patchy and very sparse. (Fortunately, though, I lucked out with the areas where I didn’t want regrowth, and the hair on my head grew back nicer than it was before chemo. For that, I am thankful.)
I have tried castor oil on my lashes and saw no change, but maybe I was a little impatient and needed to give it more time. I don’t want to risk changes to my eye color with chemical products, as I’m constantly getting complimented on how green they are, and the color is the one thing I really like about my face.
But this information you gave me is great because I have a friend who is looking for a lash solution, too, so I’ll pass it on to her. Thanks!
The best eyelash enhancer I have used is by No7, Fanomenal lash serum. It works really well and the Browvo by Benefit really helps my eyebrows. The No7 is on Amazon for about $17.
Happy to enable, Deb?
Thank you Tammy. I am happy to be enabled, LOL. Anesthesia effect so I am a little goofy!
Happy to be enabled, Tammy. I am under the effects of anesthesia so I am a little goofy, sorry!
that pale pink shimmer is gorgeous on you!
What were your favorites from the last month? MAC Kid eyeshadow, Clinique Berry Pop blush, Chanel Rouge Coco lipstick in Mademoiselle, and Marc Jacobs Highliners (I have a bunch and love them all). On the perfume front: Nirvana Black was my new favorite, but Mugler Aura has been growing on me.
What didn’t impress you? Laura Mercier Lotus Pink Blush. I’m having trouble applying it sheerly, no matter how lightly I touch the brush to the powder, even blowing it off afterwards. It’s extremely pigmented and no matter what I do, it makes clown cheeks on me. But I love the brand and the shade, so I’ll keep working with it, trying different brushes and techniques. Any advice is welcome.
Did you return anything you purchased? No.
Or successfully resist temptation? Barely. I went a little crazy, but it could have been a lot worse.
how about tapping some of the pigment off on the back of your hand before applying?
I’ve tapped off into the air, but not on my hand. I’ll try that. Thanks!
What were your favorites from the last month? Chanel Tisse Rivoli and Sephora’s discontinued eyeshadows in Fall Leaves and Cookie Crunch
What didn’t impress you? can’t really think of anything except maybe the fact that Sephora is phasing out more and more of NARS duo eyeshadows
Did you return anything you purchased? no, but I still may return the MAC Waterweight concealer I bought a wile back
Or successfully resist temptation? yes – saw the Violet Voss e/s palette at Sephora the other day and had to actively talk myself out of it.
What were your favorites from the last month? Sofina Primavista long wear UV base, it keeps my face matte for probably over 13 hours. It’s insane (no matter what foundation I put on top).
What didn’t impress you? Cover FX power play foundation. It’s so dry and by the end of the day my face is even wrinkly when I make any facial expression (note that I’m only 22 years old)
Did you return anything you purchase? Nope. I don’t return anything. But I wish I returned Juvia’s place magic palette. All the shade are just so oily, even the mattes. I discovered that I hate these types of formula. Doesn’t apply well with a brush at all.
Or successfully resist temptation? Nope. I went crazy in April.
What were your favorites from the last month? Physician’s Formula Murumuru Butter Blush in Plum Rose; UD Vice Lipstick in Outspoken; SauceBox Equinox Eyeshadow Collection; ColourPop Pressed Powder Face Duo in Winging It; EcoTools Total Perfecting Blender sponge; Nyx Faux Blacks Eyeliner in Burnt Sienna; ColourPop Lux Lipstick in Getty.
What didn’t impress you? That I bought: Physician’s Formula Murumuru Butter Blush in Natural Glow.
That I didn’t buy: MAC Nicopanda collection; Sephora eyeshadow reformulation; Hourglass Expose Graphik Eyeshadow Palette.
Did you return anything you purchased? Physician’s Formula Murumuru Butter Blush in Natural Glow. It was too light for me to use as either a blush or highlighter. As a blush topper, it brought out my pores and scars.
Or successfully resist temptation? Urban Decay Beached Collection; NARS x Erdem Strange Flowers Collection
Last month’s favorites: I used the Viseart Tryst palette everyday. Its major flaw for me is the lack of a brown or taupe transition shade and once I added that, I really enjoyed all the other shades. On my face I used the IT Cosmetics CC cream over Touch in Sol No Poreblem Primer. At first the primer was a fail for me because while it was light and blurred nicely, it felt uncomfortably slick. I tried the Wayne Goss trick of powdering over primer before foundation and it works amazingly well with this foundation/primer combo. I also used my Japanese drugstore mascara, D-Up Volume Extension Mascara everyday but as it does not seem to be CF, I won’t be buying it again when it is gone.
What didn’t impress me: Smashbox eyelid primer. It doesn’t work any better than Nyx or Ulta at smoothing my eyelids. And while I love Koh Gen Do Maifanshi moisture makeup, the Aqua formula was a hot mess on me.
I didn’t return anything.
I resisted the Charlotte Tilbury Transform-Eyes quad. It is $53 and I am fairly sure I have dupes for all the colors.
Favorites from the last month: I haven’t finished trying all my new products yet! Some of the items I bought this month (Pat McGrath Bronze Ambition and La Vie En Rose palettes, Anastasia’s Amrezy, NARS Wanted Cheek Palette II, Too Faced Life’s a Festival Palette) are likely to be listed on next month’s favorites, after I get a chance to really play with them.
Here are my favorites of the products I’ve been using: Pat McGrath Platinum Bronze Palette, Laura Mercier Hydrating Primer, Pretty Vulgar Lilac Lust (so pretty, wearing it right now!), NARS Wanted Cheek Palette volume 1, and NARS Audacious lipstick in Juliette. From my stash I’ve been really enjoying Anastasia’s Modern Renaissance, LANCOME’s Monsieur Big Mascara (with lash primer underneath) and Elizabeth Arden’s LE Lipstick in Violetini.
Didn’t impress me: I’m sorry to say, Shiseido’s Synchroskin foundation has been a miss for me. I wore it for almost two weeks but yesterday was the end of the line. It looks like chalk on my skin (in texture, not color), is not natural, has too much coverage even when sheered out,, and does not last the day. It may be responsible for my recent acne breakout, I haven’t had one of these in 30 years and right now I have five blemishes on my face.
Also I really had trouble with Visart Pro II. It did not work for me at all when we were having our spring cold snap and my skin was dry. Now that it’s warmer up and my eyelids are back to normal, I can create a flattering look with it. I do like three of the shimmers and I really love the rich coral shade. I will be keeping it for those shades.
Returning: Shiseido Synchroskin.
Resisted: Urban Decay Vice lipsticks in Outspoken and Rebel, Natasha Denona Diamond and Blush Oalette in Darya, Natasha Denona’s Tropic eyeshadow palette, Artis Oval 7 and Palm Brushes, Chanel Lipstick in L’Indomable, Pretty Vulgar Highlighter in Sparkling Sass, and Pat McGrath’s LuxeTrance lipstick in Realness.
Loves:
All three Too Faced Natural eye and face palettes.
ABH Amrezy highlighter.
Kevin Aucoin’s Neo-blush in pink sand
I just got the Buxom White Russian lip liner and gloss (I know, late to the game, but good for summer nude lip).
Nars Free Soul highlighting blush (so pretty)
MY go-to matte nude lip (also great with White Russian) is still Colour Pop Midi.
Returned:
Nars Danger Control eye palette (why oh why did I bother?)
T3 hot rollers, but I got the T3 Bodywaver as well and kept it. I prefer it–faster and no-clip lines in my hair.
Drybar Detox dry shampoo–the smell made me want to be sick to my stomach.
Resisted:
Marc Jacobs Fantascene Coconut eyeshadow palette
Smashbox + Vlada Petal Metal highlighters
What were your favorites from the last month? I liked the MAC PatrickStarrr release – great deal.
What didn’t impress you? I don’t like the pink lipstick casing of those Sephora lipstory lipsticks. I think it looks too . . . .child-ish.
Did you return anything you purchase? No
Or successfully resist temptation? Not one bit! I bought the PatrickStarrr kit (the neutral one, the Me So Chic or Stay With Me or somethingorother) and the Pat McGrath Sublime and Bronze Ambition Palettes. I also got those gold and pink Fix+ sprays. A bit of a splurge this month!
Another one for what didn’t impress me: MAC Nicopanda – a lot of misses in that one.
1.What were your favorites from the last month? Tarte Chrome Pots, I’m obsessed with the formula and really hope they expand the line. Bare Minerals Gen Nude blush, so pretty. Laneige Water Bank Essence, just softens and hydrates my skin immediately. Laura Lee Morphe brush collection, first time using their brushes, very impressed impressed with performance at that price point and the foundation brush is EVERYTHING. Lastly, Tarte Park Ave Princess palette & Marc Jacobs coconut bronzer.
2.What didn’t impress you? Sad to say Tarte Shape Tape, it cakes up my foundation as soon as I blend it out over my foundation on top my cheekbones. I thought it was change in skincare but it happens regardless of skincare applied and it happens to all of my foundations. After weeks of process of elimination I realized it’s shape tape. ?
3.Did you return anything you purchase? No but I considered returning NARS Danger Control, glad I only paid 1/2 price.
4. successfully resist temptation? New Smashbox, Nars & UD releases
What were your favorites from the last month? Lorac Pro Metals palette, Manuka Honey Serum and Chia Seed oil.
What didn’t impress you? Sukin night time moisturising cream – the botanical fragrance was too much for me.
Did you return anything you purchase? No
Or successfully resist temptation? Dior Alfresco palette, that was on sale. I am waiting for the Neapolis palette to come here to Aus.
I am also eyeing off the Pat McGrath Subliminal palette – it does look so, so good.
It’s not the Subliminal palette I am eyeing off, but the Platinum Bronze one that Tammy has – OMG it is so, so good.
Favorites from last month : MAC Margin blush! I have never tried it and assumed it’d be another NARS Orgasm shimmery pinky peach blush (of which I have a million times over). It’s a glowy peachy nude blush that is so flattering. A slightly deeper version of the new Benefit Gold Rush ( but in a good way!). I also have been obsessed with MAC Spirit lipstick which is also new to me. And yet again I’ve been obsessed w my TF Just Peachy Mattes and Sweet Peach Palettes. I have never tried pairing them together and have really enjoyed doing so!
What didn’t impress: I haven’t bought too much this month. I bought the new Benefit Gold Rush Blush and it’s ok. It smells heavily of baby powder and it lingers for quite some time. It is also very light and even with building up, it barely shows up on my MAC NC 15-20 skin. I know some people really like barely there blush. I just wish it was a tad deeper bc it does fade away to nothing half way through the day and I do like to see that I have blush on, not to be guessing if I do. I find MAC Margin to be similar in tone but a bit deeper and therefore much better!
Return anything: Not so far. I may still return my Persona palette. It’s pretty but it’s not amazing either though the cover is cute!
Resist temptation : the MAC Nicopanda collection. I do want a lipstick or lipgloss but I know I only want bc the packaging is so cute. I won’t reach for those colors too much!
